Blog Tour & Giveaway: A Single Kiss by Grace Burrowes

A Single Kiss

Hannah Stark has set her sights on corporate law to assure her a career of paperwork, predictability, and conservative suits. Contracts, finance, and the art of the deal sing to her, while the mess and misery of the courtroom do not. But her daughter needs to eat, so when Hannah is offered a temporary position in a small town firm’s domestic relations department, she reluctantly accepts.

Trent Knightley is mightily drawn to his newest associate, though Hannah is as protective of her privacy as she is competent. When their friendship and attraction heat up, Hannah’s secrets put her heart and Trent’s hopes in double jeopardy.

James stood beside Mac at the window in Mac’s office, watching the head of the domestic relations department escort his newest associate to her car.

“Why isn’t that idiot sneaking in a little kiss here and there?” James asked. “He’s not even touching her. Didn’t offer his arm, hasn’t got his hand on her back.”

“Some of us appreciate a more subtle approach,” Mac said. “Some of us with a little discretion and tact.”

“I about sat her in my lap at lunch earlier this week. She said I was flirting my eyelashes off, and laughed at me.”

“Laughed?” By a little blue Prius, Trent handed Hannah her briefcase. “You have my condolences, James. You must be losing your touch. We depend on you to carry the Knightley standard into the bedroom of western Maryland, but it looks as if at long last – well, one hopes it’s long last-”

“Shut up,” James smacked Mac’s shoulder for good measure. “It’s just as long and lasting as it ever was, but Hannah Stark has been inoculated against my devastating charms by the only thing that has ever protected a female from falling for me.”

“Common sense?” Mac drawled. “A functioning brain? A sense of humor? An accurately calibrated ruler?”

“She’s fallen for him,” James said, gesturing towards the parking lot. “We have reason to hope.”

Jennifer’s Review of A Single Kiss

Review (4.25 Stars): I liked Hannah and Trent as a couple in A Single Kiss because they had so much in common even though they didn’t know that in the very beginning.  Hannah was looking for a job as an attorney to be able to take care of her and her daughter, Grace, and would have taken anything as long as it wasn’t Family Law.  Family Law brought back too many painful memories for her and she only had to get through six months of it and then she would be moved to the Corporate Law department, which is what she desperately wanted.  Hannah was very reserved and wouldn’t let people really get to know her because she wanted to keep her life private.  She didn’t want people to know about her past and she kept people at an arm’s length wherever she went.

Trent was this great guy that had given up on love after his divorce.  He had a daughter to take care of and wanted to do the best job that he could for his clients.  Meeting Hannah and having her work for him made him feel things that he thought were long gone.  He knew that Hannah was hiding things about her personal life and he wanted her to trust him so she would open up to him when she was ready.  I couldn’t imagine a more admirable guy than Trent and he was right there by her side when all her secrets came to light.

This is the first book in the Sweetest Kisses series and it has a lot of potential.  I loved how Trent’s family stood by one another no matter what happened and I’m looking forward to seeing Trent’s brothers get their own happy endings.  The pacing was slow in parts but I didn’t feel that it took too much away from the story and I was glad to see everything wrapped up nicely in the end.  Looking forward to the next title in the series.

Chicago homicide detective Camille Martell will stop at nothing to track down “Angel,” a sexual predator who has already butchered two young victims—even after her off-the-books investigation leads to her suspension. But when her relentless attempts to contact Angel online puts her teenage neighbor in mortal danger, Camille’s worst fears are realized. Panicked and overwhelmed with guilt, Camille needs help—even if it comes from the one man she swore she’d do anything to forget.

After serving time for a trumped-up charge, private investigator Drago Nance doesn’t trust cops. Nothing will change that, not even the steamy weekend with Camille that burned itself into his memory. But with an innocent girl’s life at stake, Drago can’t ignore the need in Camille’s eyes, or the heated promise in her touch. He agrees to help—if she’s willing to play by his rules. He just never suspected that seducing his partner could be just as thrilling as chasing a madman.

Frustration filled Camille Martell when she checked the list of people logged into the “come and get some” chat room, her nickname for the Chicago area dating site Meet ’n’ Greet, where she’d found Angel. The scum wasn’t there now. Obsessed with stopping the sexual predator who’d murdered at least two young women he’d seduced via the Internet, she’d been spending every waking hour away from the job hunting him on her home computer.

“Damn it! C’mon, you bastard, where are you? Show yourself!”

As if her demand zapped him through the ether, his avatar—a dark angel holding a sword—appeared.

“Yes!” Her adrenaline surged, and she quickly logged in as Morrigan, the old college photo identifying her as a twenty-one-year-old redhead. Exactly Angel’s type. He didn’t have a clue she was a cop.

Max nudged her leg and whistled through his nose.

Patting the dog’s big, scruffy body, she absently murmured, “Good boy,” as she tensed watching the parade of messages scroll up her screen.

BigMan: anyone wanna talk with me will show photo

Cougar: let’s see your photo first—not your face, BIG man!

hotgirl: camshows $10/10 minutes skype hotgirl69

Camille’s gaze flicked to the column of sign-ins. Angel was there but not interacting. She’d engaged him twice in the last two days. He’d been flirting carefully with her, like he had been testing her. He knew she was here. What was he waiting for?

She took a big breath. “C’mon, c’mon!”

Unable to wait for it, she took the lead.

Morrigan: Hey, Angel.

Angel: how’s it playing?

Morrigan: Bored ’n’ lonely

Angel: sorry

Morrigan: You can fix

Would he take the bait? Say he wanted to meet? Her pulse fluttered through her as she waited for his reply.

Cougar: woo-wee, angel, she’s comin’ on to ya

Angel: r u, M? what you wanna do with me?

She’d like to do all kinds of nasty things to a lowlife like him, but she’d settle for cuffing him and bringing him in. She thought about saying something sexual, but instinct told her to play it cool.

Morrigan: Just wanna talk . . . to start . . .

BigMan: let’s you ’n’ me talk, honey—skype name?

Morrigan: With Angel only! IM Morrigan22

Camille held her breath as she waited to see if Angel would use it.

Angel: gotta go ttyl

An instant message popped up on her screen, but it was from the guy who called himself BigMan. Camille ignored it. Her hands curled into fists, she sat staring at the monitor, willing Angel to IM her. If he got the mental message, he was ignoring it. Had she played it too cool? Should she have lured him in with the promise of something more than talk?

Another failed attempt. Her adrenaline crashed, deflating her once more.

“Damn it!”

She wanted to punch something.

Max was still sitting there, staring at her, and she realized she hadn’t fed him. Thankfully, she’d hired Sandy Kawecki, the teenage girl who lived next door, to walk Max after school, so he didn’t need to go out right away. She hadn’t meant to have a dog with her busy schedule, but the bruiser had been a pitiful sight on the street barking in terror at anything that went by. That had been barely a month ago. She’d tried to find his owner, and when that had proved impossible, then she’d thought she could find him a good home. He’d found hers instead.

For the last few weeks after getting home from work, she’d gone directly to the computer, since she’d been unable to conduct her search at the office. Each time she wished Angel would IM, but wishing wasn’t going to make it happen, so she pushed away from her desk and headed for the kitchen, the dog following close on her heels.

“Hungry?”

His big brown eyes hopeful, Max whined and licked his chops.

Patting his side, she fetched a can and opened it while considering the irony of her being taken off the Chat Room Predator Case—the reason they gave her was she was “too emotionally focused” on it, and letting other cases slide. But that focus was what had connected her with the presumed killer, though she still hadn’t gotten him to go beyond chatting.

It might take some time, but she would find a way to meet him and arrest him and get him to trial, if it was the last thing she ever did.

Jennifer’s Review of Dangerous

Review (4 Stars):This was a very fast-paced romance that was action-packed from the beginning.  Camille is a cop on the hunt for a sexual predator that is targeting young women in an online chat room.  When her investigation goes too far, she is put on administrative leave and because of her actions, a young neighbor is put in harm’s way. With no one else to turn to, Camille calls on the one man that can help her but is also the one man that she couldn’t forget.  The two of them search for a killer while trying to fight the sexual chemistry that they just can’t deny.

I was so mad at Camille in the beginning of the story because she was so hellbent on catching this killer that she didn’t take precautions to protect a young neighbor from getting caught in the middle of it.  I couldn’t imagine anyone else besides Drago to help her in this situation and he wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty if he needed to.  The sexual chemistry between the two of them lit up the pages and I was at the edge of my seat by the conclusion of this novel.  This is a new author to me but I’m looking forward to reading more from her in the future.

Will and his cousin and fellow spy, Alec Gilbride, are keeping on eye on Evie and her sister, Eden, at a ball.

Alec’s only reply was a distracted grunt. Will followed his cousin’s gaze to a shallow window alcove framed with blue velvet drapes, where Evie and Beaumont chatted with Eden and a trio of her ever-present swains.

He flicked an interested glance at Alec. “What do you think of Evie’s sister? You spent time with her last week, too.”

“Only because I had to run interference to keep her away from you and Miss Whitney,” Alec said in a disgruntled tone.

“Yes, and I thank you for your help. Eden didn’t seem all that keen on your company.”

Alec let out a grudging laugh. “She thinks I’m a complete bore, what with me prosing on about charities and whatnot.”

“Not to mention your loyal son of the Highlands routine. That seemed to put her off too.”

“Pity. She’s a bonny lass and that’s a fact. But at this point I suspect she’d rather shave her head than hold another conversation with me. My little act apparently worked too well.” He let out a dramatic sigh. “The sacrifices I make for Crown and country.”

“Poor you,” Will said. “But despite your trepidation, I think it best we spend some time visiting with the ladies and Mr. Beaumont. It will afford you the opportunity to find out just how much Eden dislikes you.”

“Won’t that be a lark,” Alec replied sardonically.

An unexpected touch on Will’s shoulder had him spinning around, instinctively starting to assume a defensive stance. When he saw who stood behind him, he winced.

“Stand down, Wolf, you’re not in the Peninsula,” Aden St. George said, trying not to laugh. “The only danger you face in this ballroom is from matchmaking mammas or rich widows on the prowl.”

Will shot a glance at Alec, relieved to see he also regarded their newly arrived companion with a slightly embarrassed demeanor. He obviously hadn’t noticed Aden sneaking up on them, either, though Aden was almost as tall and brawny as Alec.

Aden St. George had been one of England’s most talented and lethal spies in the long war against the French, and the man chosen to be Dominic Hunter’s replacement as Head of Section. He was also their cousin, and a by-blow of the Prince Regent himself.

Will shook Aden’s hand. “I suggest you not sneak up on me again, or you might find yourself with an injury in a most unwelcome part of your anatomy.”

Aden laughed. “My wife would have something to say about that. You cross her at your peril, I assure you.”

Jennifer’s Review of How To Plan A Wedding For A Royal Spy

Review (4 Stars): This is another great romance in the Royal Renegade series and I was glad that Evie and Will were able to have a second chance at love.  Captain Will Endicott is summoned by his father to investigate an assassination plot involving his childhood sweetheart, Evie Whitney and to find out who else may be involved.  Will can’t believe that naive, sweet Evie could be a part of such a devious plan but Will finds out that Evie isn’t the same girl that he left all those years ago.  Evie has grown into a beautiful young woman who believes that she finally has everything she ever wanted until Will waltzes back into her life.  Will may have his hands full with this assignment because not only can he stop a deadly plot but now he has an opportunity to win back the one woman he ever loved.

I enjoyed Will and Evie together as a couple and the two of them together were explosive.  Evie was shy when Will knew her before but now she is trying to be an independent woman who believes that she is finally getting what she wanted. The scenes between the two of them are hilarious and you can tell that these two characters have feelings for each other when they are trying to pretend that they don’t.  Ms. Kelly does a great job bringing these characters to life and you will get swept away with this storyline.  Even if you haven’t read the rest of the series, that doesn’t matter because Ms. Kelly makes it easy to follow along and enjoy this delightful romance.

THE LOVING DAYLIGHTS

Shy Jane Spyrus loves gadgets. She can build anything B.L.I.S.S. needs in the international organization’s fight against crime-although its agents aren’t exactly lining up at her door. Some of them think her inventions are a little too . . . well, innovative. Like her shrink-wrap prophylactic constraints, or her spray-on truth serum.

Of course, you can’t use wacky inventions to fix all your problems; Jane knows that better than anyone. Her neighbor has been kidnapped, driving that point home. She will have to team up with another human being-and Abel Andretti arrives just in time. He will help Jane find her neighbor, stop a villain, and most of all he will show Jane to love the daylights out of something without batteries.

She hadn’t been thinking, that was obvious, Jane decided, and tossed the little packets back into her briefcase, then reached to retrieve the banana and it’s spiked holder.

“What are you doing?” Y asked sharply.

Jane paused and flushed. “I was going to skip this item. It’s rather silly and I thought I should just move on to-”

“No skipping,” Y said firmly.

Mr Manetrue nodded, adding, “Even if your idea doesn’t work out, Jane, it may spur another idea from someone else here, or even yourself. That’s what these meetings are about, remember?”

Jane blew out an unhappy breath, but set the banana and its holder back and retrieved the small foil packets from her briefcase. “This idea- Well, my gran was telling me once about an agent friend of hers who was raped while on assignment and I thought-” Her face was flaming and she knew it, but she had no choice but to continue, so straightened her shoulders and blurted, “I came up with the BLISS Shrink-Wrap Condom.”

Dick Hedde was not the only one to laugh this time, although most of the other laughs were more embarrassed titters. Jane did her best to ignore them and walked over to hand a packet to both Y and Mr Manetrue before returning to her spot and opening the packet she’d kept for herself.

“As you can see, the label suggests the condom contains a Viagra-like substance to increase longevity and increase sensitivity and pleasure,” she mumbled, wishing she’d thought a little harder about this before deciding to present it. “This is to make it appear more attractive to anyone who might use it.”

Jennifer’s Review of The Loving Daylights

Review (4 Stars)  Jane Spryus loves creating gadgets for her job at B.L.I.S.S. and is great at it except her ideas border on being too creative and unconventional.  One night, she takes some of her inventions home with her and her next door neighbor, Edie, “borrows” one, unaware that object is more than meets the eye. When her neighbor ends up being kidnapped, it is up to Jane and Edie’s brother to find her and save the day while falling in love at the same time.

The Loving Daylights is a very cute romance with the right amount of espionage to make it entertaining and keep you on the edge of your seat.  Jane was a very shy character in the beginning of this book and she felt that everything she did was wrong.  Never in a million years did she imagine to meet a handsome guy and go on an adventure of a lifetime.  I liked Jane and Abel as a couple because they were both very sweet and reserved and just seemed to bring out the best in one another.  The story is quite different than Ms. Sands vampire series but I think it is a fast-paced fun adventure that I’m sure will please fans of her books.

Just as they reached the door of a squat, flat-roofed building, Floyd’s phone started ringing. He checked the screen and with an apologetic smile said, “I’m sorry. I have to take this but you go right on ahead. They’re expecting you.”

Josh took that to mean his staff and he pushed open the door, stepping into a waiting room. Two framed and faded prints of the Rocky Mountains hung crookedly facing each other, and the rest of the wall space was taken up with health posters that urged people to quit smoking, lose weight and have their eyes checked. The reception desk had the usual raised counter and he caught the sight of a computer screen but there was no sign of a receptionist. He could however see a black hoodie slung over a chair. Kitty-corner to the reception desk was a large basket overflowing with toys and in the center of the room a small stack of dog-eared magazines sat on a low table.

Matching green upright chairs— all evenly spaced— bordered three sides of the room making it like most every other waiting room he’d ever seen. The chatter in the room faded as twenty sets of eyes swung straight to him, their expressions a mixture of interest and caution.

With no one available to formally introduce him, Josh took the situation into his own hands. After all, he was the physcian they’d been waiting for and he had experience addressing the media from his time in the E.R. having treated some of the more infamous gang members for gunshot wounds. Clapping his hands together as a sign that an announcement was about to be made, he said with appropriate gravitas, “Hello. I’m Dr. Stanton from Chicago’s Mercy Hospital and I’m in Bear Paw for—”

“Has Randall finally quit to fish?” an elderly lady asked in surprise.

Josh wasn’t used to being interrupted. He opened his mouth to reply but another woman got in first. “Lynn didn’t mention it when I met her at the grocery store the other day.”

The man next to her adjusted his glasses and gave Josh a long, hard stare. “Are you a real doctor or just one of those pretend ones they usually send us?”

“Physician’s assistant,” someone added in clarification. “He doesn’t look old enough to be a doctor.”

“Of course I’m a doctor,” Josh said incredulously, still trying to come to grips with the way the conversation was flying off on tangents. It was like being on a stage with a cast who’d gone off-script. “I’m a qualified E.R. physician.”

“Oh, I used to like that George Clooney,” a woman who looked to be in her sixties said with a dreamy smile.

Now he was seriously in the twilight zone. “He’s an actor,” Josh said firmly, his voice sounding overly loud. “I’m board-certified. A real doctor.”

The room went silent and the geriatric inquisition stared at him unhappily. This wasn’t going quite like the ticker tape parade he’d imagined.

“I’m quite aware that Mr. Clooney’s an actor,” the woman said with a sniff. “He made a fine doctor.”

The inference was clear— Josh was coming a distant second to an aging Hollywood actor who’d starred in the role fifteen years ago. What the hell sort of a town had he come to?

“No one can live up to George, Doris,” said a new voice behind him.

He turned to see a young woman smiling at him.

“That’s very true, Millie,” Doris replied. “I guess for now we’ll have to give Dr. Stanton the benefit of the doubt. Mind you, he’s got a look of a younger George with his height and curly hair.” Doris sounded slightly mollified.

“I’ll do my best.” Josh said uncertain exactly how to proceed. Right now he’d take a patient with a gunshot wound or an off-his-face meth addict rather than face this group of critical seniors. He was used to being judged on his clinical skills, not his ability to look like an actor.

The young woman stuck out her hand. “I’m Millie Switkowski, nurse practitioner and I’m your go-to person here at the clinic. Welcome to Bear Paw Dr. Stanton. I’m looking forward to working with you.”

He gripped her hand like it was a life preserver in a choppy sea. Finally, he’d met someone who seemed professional and competent. Hell, she was the first person he’d met in Bear Paw who seemed normal.

The memory of dancing green eyes, a sassy mouth and a sweet behind, flooded him and he immediately tried to shut it out. Katrina McCade wasn’t normal— she was difficult, bitter, bossy and annoying. And as sexy as hell.

Someone coughed— a wet and hacking noise that was the insidious sound of heart failure. It immediately focused him. The town and its population might be as foreign to him as Kazakhstan and he may not have gotten the welcome he’d anticipated, but this he knew. He swung round briskly. “Who ever owns that cough, I’ll see you first.”

Jennifer’s Review of Montana Actually

Review (4.5 Stars): I enjoyed this sweet romance because it was actually two love stories wrapped in one.  Katrina moved back to Bear Paw to get away from the mess of her life and reconnect with her family.  Josh ended up in Bear Paw to pay down his student loans and never expected to meet the one woman he couldn’t resist.  Together they find that love has been waiting for them all along and they just have to take a chance at a future they have always wanted.

I liked Katrina and Josh together in this story because I loved Katrina’s personality.  She was this spunky firecracker that seemed to be able to do anything she set her mind to except finding the right guy.  Josh was very conservative in the beginning and seemed as though he needed to work on his bedside manner quite a bit to be able to fit into this small community.  They just seemed to work well together and I enjoyed spending time in Bear Paw getting to know these characters.  Montana Actually is a very charming romance that is the perfect start to this series. Bear Paw seems like a great place to visit and fall in love and I’m looking forward to seeing which character is up next for their happy ending.

She trudged on. Safety was just over the next hill—or was she in a glen? It was impossible to tell. Her cloak was crusted with ice, the hem stiff and scratchy against her legs, snagging her stockings, shredding them. Fear rose, more menacing now, and she fought the urge to panic. She gulped a deep breath and tasted snow, felt the chill invade her lungs, form a cold ball in her belly. She could barely open her eye against the force of the driving snow stinging her face.

The world was as opaque as linen, or new milk.

Or a shroud.

“Hello!” she called out. The wind snatched the word and flung it away. “Please,” she begged. The gale took that word too. She bent forward, forced her way, step after step, the snow creaking and whining under her feet, the wind tearing at her clothes.

Alanna didn’t see the gully. It was as white as everything else—but suddenly she was tipping sideways, sliding, unable to stop herself from falling down the frozen slope. She screamed as she hit something sharp and hard  and came to a jarring stop. Pain shot through her knee, filled her body with agony, made her pant as her heart hammered against her ribs. There were sharp rocks lurking under the fresh snow. They peered up like jagged teeth from where her fall had uncovered them. It could have been much worse than a bruised knee. “Lucky,” she whispered.

She lay still, staring up at the sky, as white and heartless as the earth, lost in shock and pain. She reached her hand down to where pain radiated from her left knee, but her frozen fingers were useless. She raised her hand and stared at the blood on her glove. She swallowed hard.

Cut then, at least. Or was her leg broken? She tried to move it, felt the instant stab of pain, and cried out. The world dissolved from snow to white-hot fire. She felt a bubble of hysterical laughter fill her chest. Surely this would delay the wedding. Or would it simply make her bruised and battered and ugly on her wedding night? Her mirth died. She tried now, as she had for days, to imagine Merridew above her, in her bed, his body against hers. She felt only dread.

Up—she must get up, keep going. She gritted her teeth and tried to rise.  White hot agony forced the breath from her lungs, and she fell back. Perhaps the injury was worse than she’d thought, or maybe she was simply mired in a deep drift of snow. She would have to dig herself out, force herself to her feet, and continue on. She looked around, trying to get her bearings, but there was nothing, no one. The world had disappeared. She bit her lip, fought tears, and set a hand over her heart to still the terror that threatened to choke her. She was so cold, and so tired.

She lay back. She just needed a moment to rest, and then she would get up and find her way home. Above her, the snowflakes rushed toward her, silver on white, hypnotic. They tickled as they settled on her skin, a gentle caress. Alanna shut her eyes.

Just for a moment, she’d rest. Then she’d get up and find her way home.

Jennifer’s Review of Once Upon a Highland Christmas

Review (4.75 Stars): I found a new favorite author after reading Once Upon a Highland Christmas and I want to find a guy exactly like Iain.  He was sweet, charming and so gentle with Alanna after she was injured out in the snow. He was definitely an alpha male who had so much responsibility on his shoulders and planned to propose to another woman because it was expected of him after receiving his new title. The chance meeting with Alanna that night wasn’t what either of them had planned but once they saw each other, you could feel the sexual chemistry and heat between these two characters.

Alanna was used to fulfilling obligations as well and didn’t want to disappoint her family even though she was set to marry a man that she didn’t love.  Iain saved her life out in the snow that night and because of her injuries, she had to recuperate in his home.  I loved the interactions between the two and you could just see their relationship growing stronger as time went on.  They were an adorable couple and I was hoping that a little Highland magic could keep this couple together for Christmas.

This is the third novel in the Once Upon a Highland series and I loved every minute of this story.  Ms. Cornwall has created a perfect holiday romance that is sure to keep readers warm on those cold winter nights.  Once Upon a Highland Christmas was a beautifully written story with the right amount of Highland magic and charm that makes it one of my favorite books of the holiday season.

How many times had some well-intentioned relative or friend told him he needed to dip his toe in the dating waters, get back in the game, yada yada? He rejected their efforts at matchmaking and suffered through the curious gazes they gave to every female he even spoke to.

Didn’t they get it? He couldn’t imagine ever loving again. Besides, he’d been by Anita’s side from the time she got the diagnosis of terminal brain cancer until the day she died. Never, ever again, would he let himself be vulnerable to the shattering pain of loss. To the bitter anger against the world, himself, even the woman he loved but couldn’t save.

His heart clenched, the ache rose in his throat, and—

“Dave? You okay?” Warm fingers brushed his forearm, bare below the rolled-up sleeve of his lightweight denim shirt.

Cassidy. He breathed in, fresh air cleansing his throat, his chest.

“Yeah, sorry,” he said brusquely. Her voice, her touch had beaten back the darkness.

And now that he was back in the real world, he realized how disconcertingly good those soft fingers felt against his skin.

They’d reached the outskirts of town, which gave him an excuse to raise his arm so that her hand dropped. He pointed ahead. “That’s Westward Ho!—where I keep my horse.” The well-maintained wooden stable housed a couple dozen horses. Beside it was a red-roofed barn, and two white-railed paddocks provided space for the horses to stretch and socialize.

“That’s so cool, that you have your own horse.”

He shrugged. “Can’t imagine my life without a horse.”

“You’ve been riding since you were little?”

“Yeah, though I wasn’t a ranch kid, or into rodeo, like some of my friends. When I married Jessie, horses became a bigger part of life, and Robin lives and breathes them.”

“Handy that you can keep your horse in town.”

“Uh-huh,” he said as they walked into the stable. “I try to get out on Malibu at least every couple of days. When I can’t, Robin or one of the staff here exercises him for me.”

Dave greeted Eddy, the teenage girl whose dad owned the business, and introduced Cassidy. Leaving the two of them to deal with Cassidy’s paperwork, he and Merlin went out to the paddock to call Malibu. The palomino gelding came over, bobbing his head eagerly.

Dave went through the familiar ritual: tie his horse with cross ties, groom him and pick his hooves, then saddle and bridle him. By the time he was finished, Eddy’d got Cassidy up on the back of a pinto mare and given her refresher instructions on how to position her body, hold the reins, and give basic cues to her horse.

“You’re all set,” Eddy said. “Have fun.”

“Absolutely.” Cassidy beamed at the girl, then at Dave. “Lead on.”

Her smile really did have a way of lighting the day. And warming his blood.

They headed out on a quiet dirt road that led out of town, their horses walking side by side with Merlin springing happily along beside them. Cassidy looked relaxed and comfortable in the saddle. Did she fit in this easily wherever she went?

She bent forward to stroke her horse’s neck, the motion snugging her jeans even tighter against her firm butt. “This is Cherry Blossom, if you can believe it,” she said. “Eddy says she prefers to be called Cherry, and I can see why. You said your palomino is Malibu?”

“Yes. Named by the woman who owned him before me.”

“Suits him. Such a pretty boy.” Her gaze skimmed up from his horse to move across Dave’s torso and end up on his face, a hint of suggestive mischief in her eyes.

“Thanks.” He added quickly, to make it clear he wasn’t flirting, “On his behalf.”

Her lips squeezed together like she was holding back a smile. “How long will it take us to get to . . . what did Robin call it? Riders Boot Camp?”

“Yes, that’s the place her mom runs. It’s about ten miles by highway, only eight by the back roads and trails. It usually takes Robin and me about half an hour, but we move fast. Don’t know how much speed you’re up for.” He cocked an eyebrow.

“I’m up for pretty much anything.” Her striking blue-gray eyes danced, and he got the sense she didn’t just mean riding.

“Uh,” he said awkwardly, “we should let the horses warm up first.” The moment he said those words, he wondered if they could be taken sexually too. He was about to clarify, then figured that would only make things worse.

“Sure,” she said. “My muscles could use a little warming up too.”

Riding muscles, right?

Best to change the subject.

Jennifer’s Review of Love Me Tender

Review (3.75 Stars): This is the fourth book in the Caribou Crossing series and even though I’m unfamiliar with the other titles, this romance is easy to follow along with. Dave and Cassidy were a very interesting couple because they were both afraid to open themselves up to love.  Dave lost his “true love” to an illness and felt that love only comes once in your life, so since he had his opportunity, there wasn’t another woman that could take her place.  He then focused all his time on his daughter and his hotel, The Wild Rose, and pretended that he didn’t need anything else in his life.

Cassidy, on the other hand, didn’t believe in love because she saw what happened to her parents and the pain that it caused her family growing up so she was out to just have a good time.  Never stayed in any one place for too long and felt that true love wasn’t real.  Her carefree attitude was her shield in life until she met Dave and he made her feel things that she wasn’t expecting. In her own way, she was looking for a home and a family that would be there when she needed them and she never realized that until that possibility was within her reach.

Love Me Tender was a sweet romance about two people who found love when they finally found the courage to open their hearts to it.  I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the love stories of characters that were mentioned throughout this book.  Since this is the fourth title in the series, I have a lot of catching up to do and I know I will enjoy their stories as much as Dave and Cassidy’s.

The Darkest Touch

Lord of the Underworld #11The Darkest Touch_cover

 AmazonB&N

From New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter comes the long-awaited story of Torin, the most dangerous Lord of the Underworld yet…

Fierce immortal warrior. Host to the demon of Disease. Torin’s every touch causes sickness and death—and a worldwide plague. Carnal pleasure is utterly forbidden, and though he has always overcome temptation with an iron will, his control is about to shatter.

She is Keeley Cael. The Red Queen. When the powerful beauty with shocking vulnerabilities escapes from a centuries-long imprisonment, the desire that simmers between her and Torin is scorching. His touch could mean the end for her, but resisting her is the hardest battle he’s ever fought—and the only battle he fears he can’t win.

*****

An excerpt from The Darkest Touch:

She appeared in front of him, displaying more tanned skin than she concealed, her hair falling around her face in lush, golden waves. Her eyes glittered with remnants of her anger. Her lips were slightly swollen and pinker than usual.

“Temper much?” she quipped.

His relief was palpable. She hadn’t forgotten him! But the relief was quickly replaced by concern. “Are you all right? Did someone hit you?”

She blinked with confusion. “No. Why?” “Your lips are swollen.”

She rubbed them, color heating her cheeks. “Someone didn’t hit me, but someone sure did hit on me.”

Hit on her. As in kissed her.

Already on edge, Torin. Utterly. Erupted.

He forgot everything he’d planned to do and say and got in Keeley’s face, snarling, “Who was it?”

Her eyes widened. “Hades. Why?”

“You dare ask why? You belong to me! We agreed. You do not kiss other men, Keeley. Ever. Have you for- gotten my rules?”

Her jaw dropped, and she gasped out a few unintelligible words as if she couldn’t quite figure out what to say to him.

He stood in place, breathing too quickly, too heavily, his throat and lungs burning. He reached for her, but as so many times before, fisted his hands and dropped them just before contact. This is crazy. I’m crazy. I have to leave.

“Are you…thinking about touching me?” she asked, her eyes widening again.

No, she had to leave. He could not be in public right now. “Go shopping. Buy yourself something pretty. My treat.” He basically tossed his credit card at her. He should be calm by the time she finished. “Come back in an hour. Maybe two. Actually, we’ll reconvene tomorrow.”

“You are,” she said. “You’re thinking… Even craving me. You don’t like the thought of another man’s hands on me, and you want to replace the memory with your hands.”

That. Yes. Hades would die, and Torin…Torin would touch this woman and never stop.

He gnashed his molars. “Last chance, Keeley. I suggest you take it and leave.” Soon. His control was almost completely shredded.

“No way. You’re the big bad warrior, yet I’ve had to come on to you time and time again. I’ve had to battle within myself—worth the price or not worth it. Well, it’s your turn.”

“There is no damn way you just suggested I haven’t done the same. I’ve battled.”

“When have you ever caved without prompting from me? You’ve resisted me so easily, always walking away. Sure, you’ve snarled while you’ve done the walking but still you left me behind. So, tell me. When did you ever—”

“So easily?” he roared. Had she just said so easily? She had no clue about the intensity of his need—but he would teach her better.

Torin cupped her by the nape, yanked her close and smashed his mouth against hers. The kiss was a brutal assault meant to silence her, to dominate and possess. He held her still, making her take it, take everything. But the moment she softened against him, welcomed him inside her mouth, the darkness churning inside him switched gears. From the need to punish and master to the need to seduce and please.

This was Keeley. His princess. She deserved his best. He gentled the pressure, rolling his tongue inside her mouth, learning her all over again, tasting her. Summer berries and melted honey. So sweet. And mine. All mine. He framed her cheeks, angled her head and rolled his tongue just a little deeper. This time, she met him with

a roll of her own.

That was his undoing.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Death With All The Trimmings by Lucy Burdette

Death with All the Trimmings copy 2

 Writing Cozy Mystery Characters
by Lucy Burdette

I’ve always been a huge reader. I tore through the Nancy Drew mysteries, then moved on to my brother’s Hardy boys adventures, gobbling lots of teenage romances in between. I also enjoyed a less well known series featuring a nurse named Cherry Ames. This sticks in my memory: Cherry was working on a hospital ward and one of her patients reported a fever and chills. She did just what she was supposed to: got a blanket for the sick person and reported the symptoms to the supervisor. Now here’s where the facts get fuzzy: I think the supervisor on duty had it in for her and didn’t write down what Cherry told her. And later, she got in big, big trouble for failing to report those important symptoms. And now Cherry had a dilemma: Did she rat out the other woman, or take the rap? Isn’t it funny how clearly I remember the character’s emotional dilemma even though most of the other details about the book have faded?

What stays with me even years after reading a book are the characters and their conflicts. So I shoot for that when writing my own series. DEATH WITH ALL THE TRIMMINGS, the fifth book in my Key West food critic series, was published December 2. These books are mysteries so I understand I need a body. And suspects. And clues. And theories about the murder.

But more important than solving the puzzle, I’m hoping readers will fall in love with my character Hayley Snow. I hope they’ll feel the shock she does when she sees her ex-boyfriend out to dinner with a new woman. And feel her heart sink when she thinks the job of a lifetime has slipped away. And I hope I’ve made the magic of Key West at Christmas come alive. And I hope readers will fall for Hayley’s family and friends too, and then want to read the next book in the series and recommend the books to friends. And maybe even remember Hayley in fifty years–now that’s what I’d call a dream!

Jennifer’s Review of Death With All The Trimmings

Review (4.25 Stars):Hayley is back with a new assignment for Key Zest magazine to interview up an coming chef, Edel Waugh and finds that someone is out to sabotage Edel’s new restaurant.  When a body is found in the kitchen after a fire, Hayley must find the killer before everything she worked for goes up in smoke.

Hayley is an adorable character and I think that she has the best job ever.  She gets to live in the beautiful and warm Key West and has the great job of being a food critic in an area that has wonderful cuisine. Her relationship with Wally is starting to heat up and things seem to be going her way when she gets the interview with Edel Waugh.  Death with all the Trimmings was a very entertaining holiday mystery that will please mystery and food lovers alike.  I love the recipes in the back of the book and all the descriptions of food that Hayley tried during this story made me so hungry.  Can’t wait to read the next book in the series which is due out next summer.

Roscoe motioned them back onto the road. “You two get out of here. Whisper Creek’s a-waitin’ for ya.”
A minute later, they crested a hill with the best view west of the Mississippi, and Hayley sighed in pleasure. The rolling vistas never ended out here. It was nothing like the crowded, noisy streets of Boston, that’s for sure.
“Ahh, vacation.” Hayley slid her shoe off and stuck her bare foot out the window.
“You think this is good. Wait ’til I introduce you to the man of your dreams.”
“I don’t really need man-of-my-dreams-level assistance here. Man-of-the-week would be just fine.”
“I don’t really deal in the of-the-week variety. Sorry.” Kyla smiled innocently. “I’m all about the staying kind.”
Hayley rolled her eyes, but didn’t let Kyla see her do so. “Okay, fine. Tell me about the vet. Does he do big animals or regular-sized ones?”
“Mostly horses.”
“Lucky. His clients could eat mine for lunch.”
“So you still have nothing but mini-beasts?”
“Not by choice.”
“Wait ’til you meet Moose. You’ll wish you could take him home.”
Hayley’d heard about Kyla’s fated trip to the Humane Society last week, but hadn’t yet seen any pictures. Apparently she’d gone in to drop off a donation—and come out with a dog who weighed more than her.
“Is he ugly?”
“So ugly that he’s cute, yes.”
“Does anything about him match anything else?”
“Not a thing. He’s got one white paw and three black ones. A funny brown circle around his right eye. A tuft of hair that sticks up randomly from his head.”
“Sweet. Does he slobber?”
“All the time.”
Hayley put her hands to her chest. “I’ll adopt him.”
“Ha. You’ll have to get by Decker. Those two are already joined at the hip. Plus, he’d take up half your apartment. And eat Brutus.”
“Brutus could use a big brother to look up to. He’s got serious little-dog syndrome.”
Kyla laughed again. “I still can’t believe you adopted a cockapoopa—wait—what is he again?”
“He’s a great Dane in disguise.”
“Of course.”
“So back to the vet. Deets, please. Height? Weight? Eye color?”
Kyla winked at her. “He might just be the sweetest guy I know, next to Decker.”
“So he’s hideous looking. Thanks, Kyla. You’re a true friend.”
“He’s not hideous at all. He’s actually quite . . . attractive.”
“If you can get beyond the crooked nose and snaggletooth and beer belly?”
“Exactly. And I mentioned he’s eighty-seven, right? Because that’s the kind of friend I am?”
“Fine. Call me out on being shallow.”
“You’re not shallow. You’re just not thinking long-term potential here.”
“I’m on cowboy-vacation. I’m not supposed to be thinking about long-term potential. Have you seen your own website? It practically screams ‘fling!’”
“You’re no more a fling type than you are a nun, missy.”
“Don’t be so sure. I’m working up to it.”
“What’s your record now?”
“Longest relationship or shortest?”
“I’m not sure you’ll ever beat the forty-five minute one from 2008, so let’s go with longest.”
“Thirteen weeks.”
Kyla was quiet for a moment as they cruised into downtown Carefree. Then, “Doesn’t it ever get old?”
Hayley sighed. Of course it got old. But it sure was better than the alternative. Definitely better than tying yourself to a guy you thought would be there for eternity, only to have him take off the moment you actually started to believe that this one was the forever variety. Been there, done that, had the T-shirt.

Jennifer’s Review of A Cowboy’s Christmas Promise

Review (4 Stars): A Cowboy’s Christmas Promise was a tender-hearted romance about two people who believed that love had passed them by until fate brought them together.  Hayley had always believed that love wasn’t for her because she saw what it did to her family when a relationship doesn’t always have a happy ending.  Daniel had met his true love and lost her to illness and felt that love like that doesn’t happen twice.  Until he met Hayley at a friend’s wedding one weekend and his whole life changed.  When the wedding festivities are over and Hayley is to return home, Daniel makes Hayley promise that she will return to Montana for Christmas and see if this initial attraction can turn into something more.

Hayley had given up on love because she saw what it did to her family and how it tore it apart when a relationship ended.  She had this strict philosophy that she would date them and dump them so she never got her heart involved and experience any loss.  The thing was that Hayley never really gave love a chance until she met Daniel.  Daniel was handsome, smart, a veterinarian like Hayley and seemed like the perfect guy.  When Hayley found out that he had children, she panicked because her fears were coming true and she didn’t want to fall in love with his family and then have the relationship fall apart.

Daniel was such a great guy.  Loving, sweet and such a great dad for his two little girls.  I loved how he went on YouTube to watch videos so he could braid his daughters’ hair for the wedding and I don’t know many men who would do that for their daughters.  He didn’t think that he would get a second chance at love but then Hayley walked into his life and he couldn’t imagine anyone more perfect for him.  I loved the things he did to prove to Hayley how much he cared for her and the final gift that he gave Hayley for Christmas had me in tears.

Ms. McGinnis is a new author to me but after reading A Cowboy’s Christmas Promise, I can’t wait to read more from this talented author.

Cover(19)

Since being cursed with unique abilities, Celia Wird and her three sisters have fought the most bloodthirsty preternaturals in the Lake Tahoe region. But Celia’s greatest threat is someone she would have never suspected: Anara, a werewolf Elder who has allowed his hatred for Celia to spiral out of control. In a play for dominance, Anara tortures Celia and gives her an ultimatum: sever her mate bond with pureblood were Aric—or Anara will kill everyone she loves.

From the instant they met, Celia and Aric have shared an attraction that cannot be tamed. So keeping Aric away is impossible, and Aric would sooner die than allow anyone to hurt the woman he loves. Misha, master vampire and Celia’s sworn protector, also finds his way into the chaos, seeking blood from those who have harmed her.

Now Celia and her sisters are caught in the middle of a war driven by lust, fueled by hatred, and destined to end in tragedy. For Anara is a force to be reckoned with, and he will not succumb without robbing Celia of those who hold her heart.

I cleared my throat when I reached the open bedroom door and tried to speak as loudly as
possible. “I don’t want to see you, Aric. You need to leave.” And if you don’t, you’ll die.

There was so much pain and astonishment in Aric’s voice my stomach churned in painful
rumbles. “Celia . . . what—”

“I told you, I don’t want to see you!” I croaked. The tears that had stopped just moments
before returned full force. Being cruel to anyone—especially Aric—was unthinkable.

The seconds of stunned silence passed with brutal thumps to my insides until Misha broke through the horrible quiet. “Celia wants nothing to do with you. Go lick your wounds elsewhere, wolf. You are not welcome in our home.”

No one spoke. No one moved. No one breathed. For what seemed like an eternity, time
stood still.

“Come, Aric,” Gemini finally said. “Our efforts are better suited in finding Emme.”

Liam’s growls reverberated against the windows. “You’re an asshole, Misha. I know
you’re influencing her somehow.”

Koda sounded more pissed than Liam. “Tim, if you don’t wipe that goddamn smirk off
your face, I’ll tear out your throat and leave it for the crows!”

Shayna rushed past me, pausing only to shoot me a pained glance over her shoulder. Her
presence would help facilitate the wolves’ departure, despite the confusion and disappointment shadowing her pixie face.

Taran waited with me with her arms crossed. I couldn’t face her. Hell, I couldn’t even raise my head. Yet I felt her taking me in and scented the sharp aroma of her shock as it pierced through my damaged nose. When the last few snarls faded and the roar of the engines disappeared along the lengthy stretch of Misha’s driveway, Shayna returned and clasped my hands. “I know Aric doesn’t look the same, but he’s still the same wolf. He loves you, Ceel. You have to see past his injuries . . .”

Shayna’s voice faded when my sobs overtook me. She thought I was abandoning Aric because of his deformities. And I had to let her believe it was true. Despite how much it pained me, it would keep him, her, and everyone else safe for now.

Taran maneuvered her way between us and led me toward the sink. “Leave her alone, Shayna. Now’s not the time. Come on, we need to get this fucking glass out of her back.”

Jennifer’s Review of A Cursed Bloodline

Review (5 Stars): Every time I read a book by Cecy Robson, I automatically know that I’m in for a story that will put me through the ringer of emotions and then carefully put me back together again by the end.  I felt so horrible for Celia in A Cursed Bloodline because she had two big secrets that she was keeping from everyone and she did what she had to do to protect the well-being of the people that she loved.  It broke my heart seeing her go through that much pain and not being able to tell anyone the truth as to why she was doing what she did.

Celia and Aric have this amazing connection with one another and he is her true mate, no matter what has happened to them in the past. Celia is now faced with a foe that has an immense amount of power intent on destroying her and the people that she loves.  I hated this character from the very beginning and I was just hoping that Celia could find someone and tell them the truth before it destroyed everything forever.  I can’t tell you how many times I cried because just when Celia found her happiness, it was ripped away from her in the very next breath.

Cecy Robson is one of my absolute favorite authors and each book that she writes becomes more gut-wrenching and brilliant than the last.  A Cursed Bloodline is an amazing addition to the Weird Girls paranormal series and after finishing it, I’m dying to read the next installment.
