600 denier Poly Duck pillow cover. 14″ x 14″.

Each of our pillow covers are handprinted by me using the sublimation process. This process is nontoxic and environmentally friendly. The print actually dyes the fibers of the fabric, leaving a permanent print that will not fade, crack or peel. It is also safe to wash! This is not an iron on transfer and the print has no “hand” or feel to it. I also do screenprinting and have found this printing process superior to screenprinting in producing a soft, washable, permanent, nontoxic print.

Despite the way he unnerved her, it was impossible to avoid noting how wonderful he
smelled. It was a spicy, potently male scent. Deep inside her, a voice cried out for her to press
her fingers against his beautiful mouth. The thought made Victoria suck in a quick, sharp breath
of air.
Nicholas’ eyes darkened with an emotion she didn’t even want to consider defining.

Slowly, he lowered his head until his mouth lightly touched hers. Fire streaked across her
skin, its warmth sinking into her pores until it heated her blood like molten lava. She sighed then
parted her mouth to lace his lips with the tip of her tongue. A dark sound rumbled in his chest as
his tongue swept its way into her mouth and imitated an act her body suddenly craved as if she
were starving.

Pleasure swept its way through her. The fiery sensation of it settled into every inch of her
body.
He said she’d bewitched him, but she was the one under his spell. His lips teased and
seduced hers until her body screamed for more.

She wanted him to touch her. Needed him. She arched her hips upward in a silent plea for
his touch, and a dark growl vibrated on her lips as he tugged the covers off her. His tongue
swirled around hers, teasing and taunting her with each tantalizing stoke. The hot taste of him
made her nipples grow hard until they ached with a pleasurable, tantalizing sensitivity. Eager to
assuage the need for his touch, she caught his hand and pressed it to her breasts. A growl
rumbled out of him as he rubbed his thumb over the rigid peak. The sensation of soft linen
between her skin and his hand made her moan softly as his mouth worked its way across her
cheek to her neck where he gently nipped at her skin.

Need spun through her, and as he lifted his head to stare down at her, she saw desire
darkening his green eyes. A knot of anticipation tightened in her lower body as his hand left her
breast and slid downward to her stomach where the heel of his hand pressed into the sensitive
spot at the apex of her thighs. The simple pressure made her suck in a sharp breath, and a small
smile curved his lips.

“I want to watch you as I make you shatter from my touch, Victoria.” His words
whispered across her senses as his hand pulled the hem of her nightgown upward to expose her
completely.

Amanda McIntyre interview with Inspector Mansfield

“Book boyfriends”—we all have fantasized about them at one time. Haven’t you thought about what it would be like to corner them for just a few minutes and have your wicked way with them? (Of course, I’m referring to all those questions you have burning inside to ask!!) Recently, I did exactly that with Inspector Randolph Mansfield, the dark, tall and handsome (did I say mysterious) member of Scotland yard’s elite criminal investigations unit.

Imagine if you will, a quiet English pub at the edge of town. The rich scent of leather and ale permeates the air, the small polished wood tables tucked discreetly in the shadowy interior, gleam under the glow of candles lit recently to diminish the dank, rainy day. The bartender smiles as I enter and nods towards a table in the back. There sits my interview, his tweed jacket flopped hastily over one of the chairs. His long legs, stretched out in front of him, ankles crossed as he studies a newspaper left behind, gives the impression that he is a man without a care in the world. He peers over the paper and pushes to his feet.

Inspector Randolph; thank you for meeting me here. It’s quite lovely, though a little difficult to find. Shall I call you Inspector Randolph, or Mr. Mansfield?

“Inspector Mansfield, will do.” He folds the paper and lays it aside, his dark brown eyes steady on me.

I clear my throat. “Inspector, I understand that you’re investigating a potential serial killer on the loose in London?”

He sighs and rakes a hand through his dark, wavy hair. “ I cannot confirm or deny that rumor and to date, it is no more than that.”

“But I just spoke to Miss Goodwin the other day and she said—“

“Miss Goodwin would do well to keep her thoughts on the matter to herself.” He responded glancing out the window before turning his attention back to me. “Please keep that betwixt us.”

“Indeed, can you tell me if Miss Goodwin is working with you on this case?”

He directs a tolerant look at me. “Scotland Yard and the CID are handling all cases pertaining to London, madam.”

“Well, perhaps we should speak on another less sensitive topic.”

He never blinked. Those mysterious, obsidian eyes held secrets I suspected far deeper than what I could gain from this interview. “How long have you been with the Yard, sir?”

He thought for a moment. “All of my life, it seems. I began as an errand boy of sorts. Worked my way up through the ranks.”

“You seem very dedicated to your work.”

“I am. And before you ask why that is, I will tell you it stems from a deep sense of justice for those who violate the law.”

“That is to say you have a strong belief in what is right and wrong, then?”

The corner of his mouth quirked. “What is legal is not to be confused with morality. The two may meet now and again, but morality is primarily based on judgment. My job is to uphold the law.”

“That’s a mysterious answer, Inspector. Almost as though you are alluding to some type of admission. Is there a secret part of you that the public is not aware of?”

He took a sip of what I garner was brandy in his glass. “I’m sorry, I didn’t ask if you’d like something to take the chill off.” He glanced at me.

Even my rudimentary reporting skills tell me that his side-step of my question affirms that there is much more to the Inspector than he leads on.

“You’re a very interesting man, sir. I suspicion there is much more to you than meets the eye.”

He chuckles. “Perhaps you are right. Don’t we all carry a little secret side of ourselves?”

“I suspect. Does Miss Goodwin know of this “secret side” of you, Inspector?”

He stood suddenly and shrugged into his jacket. “Miss Goodwin and I have an understanding. She aspires to delve into investigative reporting and I must say, she has the stubborn tenacity to do so. However, I intend to prove to her that she may be not be as well versed in her investigation skills as she might think.”

My curiosity grows, but I know I have little time left with the Inspector. Something I’ve said and I daresay it pertains to Miss Goodwin has clearly touched a nerve in the Inspector. “Can you tell me sir, how you plan to do this—prove something to Miss Goodwin, I mean.”

“Let’s just say that I will use whatever connections I have to protect the public, and that includes the beautiful, thought stubbornly willful Miss Goodwin. Now, I must excuse myself, there is work to do.”

“Like finding a serial killer?”  I ask.

The comment stopped him in his tracks. “Amongst other things. I must ask, madam, are all American women as tenacious?”

“You’re comparing me to Miss Goodwin in that respect?” I smiled. “Only when we’re after something we truly want.”

That tempting mouth, enhanced by the shadowy scruff of a day old beard gifted me with an even smile though it did not reach his gorgeous eyes. “Strange, that is exactly what Miss Goodwin said when I asked her to leave this investigation to me.”

I quirked my brow.

“Which means I will need to be even more firm in my resolve.”

I thought a moment about the two of them going head to head against one another. “Inspector, if you pardon the observation. It would seem that the stubbornness is quite evenly matched between you two. That, coupled with driven tenacity, is an explosive combination. One that can either kill a man, or bring him to his knees.”

He returns to me, leaning down to look at me directly, the air around us stagnates. “I can be very persuasive, madam.”

And so the interview ended and I watched him cross the street and with a purposeful stride make haste around the corner. I didn’t know whether to feel sorry or be jealous of Miss Goodwin’s fate.

 Excerpt:
My parents believed that women should be independent and
capable. What is your thinking along those lines, Mr. Hampton?” she asked,
purposely goading him.
He emitted a long-suffering sigh. “I do find a capable woman
refreshing, Miss Goodwin. I have no qualms with a woman who wishes to be
independent and, moreover, isn’t afraid to speak her mind.”
She slid him a glance. “Indeed, I think your aunt is
correct. You are a charmer.”
He shrugged. “A woman can profess to be independent in many
things, but there are still times when a man’s involvement is necessary.”
“That is quite enough, Wesley Hampton,” his aunt spoke.
“Name one,” Jane fired back as she crossed her arms.
“Jane!” Isabella turned in her chair and pinned Jane with a
shocked expression.
Wesley’s mouth curled into a wicked smile. He lifted his
brow and set down his cup. “A conversation left to another day

Blood & Thunder

(Thirds Series, Bk #2)
Release Day:
August 4, 2014

When a series of bombs go off in a Therian youth center, injuring members of THIRDS Team Destructive Delta, and causing a rift between agents Dexter J. Daley and Sloane Brodie, peace seems unattainable. Especially when a new and frightening group, the Order of Adrasteia, appears to always be a step ahead. With panic and intolerance spreading and streets becoming littered with the Order’s propaganda, hostility between Humans and Therians grows daily. Dex and Sloane, along with the rest of the team, are determined to take down the Order and restore peace, not to mention settle a personal score. But the deeper the team investigates the bombings, the more they believe there’s a more sinister motive than a desire to shed blood and spread chaos.

Discovering the frightful truth behind the Order’s intent forces Sloane to confront secrets from a past he thought he’d left behind for good, a past that could not only destroy him and his career, but also the reputation of the organization that made him all he is today. Now more than ever, Dex and Sloane need each other, and, along with trust, the strength of their bond will mean the difference between justice and all-out war.

“It is exceptionally important for you to knowwhen your partner is playing and when he or she is irate. Agent Daley, please

demonstrate.”

Dex arched an eyebrow at the instructor. “Whichone?”

“Both.”
“You want me to piss him off?” What kind ofclass was this?

“In a matter of speaking. Yes.”
“Great.” Okay. How could he piss off hispartner without losing a limb? What he needed to do was annoy Sloane, really annoy him. Shouldn’t be too

difficult. Dex had annoying down to an art. He thrust a finger in Sloane’s

face, knowing how much his Felid partner hated that. Then he started singing.  Nothing annoyed his partner like Hall and

Oates.

Sloane let out a fierce roar, and Dex starteddancing around him, his voice going high-pitched for certain lyrics while he

snapped his fingers. Sloane pawed at him, and Dex spun on his heels, avoiding

getting smacked. His partner hissed, baring his fangs before he took off after

Dex.

“Shit!” Dex bolted, weaving through the rows ofagents who were either laughing or watching him in disbelief while their instructor

narrated as if this was nothing more than some nature video. Dex could see the

title now. National Geographic presents Predatory

Partners.

“Understand your partner’s behavior. Why is heor she behaving in such a fashion?”

“Because I pissed him off?” Dex called out overhis shoulder, dashing back toward the instructor.

“Very good. Thank you, Agent Daley. You may nowsoothe your partner.”

Clearly, Dr. Eldridge didn’t personally knowSloane Brodie. Dex put his hands up, walking backward slowly as he spoke to his

partner.

“Hey, buddy. Just following orders, you know? You heard him. I wasn’t the one who

wanted to piss you off.” Dex crouched down and held a hand out. Please don’t bite me. Please don’t bite me.

Sloane blinked before jumping up on his two back paws, his front paws pushing

against Dex’s shoulders and knocking him onto his back. Sloane pinned him, and

Dex braced himself. When Sloane started licking his face, Dex shut his eyes

tight. “Okay, I get it. Payback. Take notes people.” Dex pointed at his partner.

“This is what I meant about payback.”

“Agent Brodie, if you’ll resume your placebeside your partner. Agent Daley, you may return to your mat.”

Sloane did as asked, and Dex wiped at his facewith his sleeve before returning to his spot. He was never more grateful not to

have ended up partnered with Ash than he was at this moment.

“Once you have assessed your partner anddeduced he or she is irate, you will want to give your partner space. If you

feel it’s safe to approach, you will do so with caution. Deal with what’s

causing the issue. For example, Agent Fuller, please approach Agent Daley.

Slowly.”

The moment Agent Fuller got to his feet,Sloane’s ears twitched. “Um, I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” Dex said,

watching Agent Fuller creep toward Dex, as if Sloane hadn’t noticed. The Human

rookie was clearly unaccustomed to dealing with Felids. “My partner’s a little

on the grumpy side and poking the sleeping jaguar with a pointy stick might not

end so well.”

Agent Fuller paused, his panicked gaze going totheir instructor.

“It’s all right, Agent Fuller. Proceed.”
Doing as instructed, Agent Fuller resumed hisprowl, while Sloane resumed his grooming of Dex, his heavy tail thumping

against the floor. Uh-oh.

“As you can see by Agent Brodie’s movements,he’s fully aware of Agent Fuller. His tail is telling Agent Fuller to be

cautious, Agent Daley is his, and he will not take kindly to any aggression

toward his partner.”

Dex held up a finger. “Can I just—”
“Please stand, Agent Daley.”
Dex did as asked, and Sloane released a huff athaving his grooming session interrupted. This was going to end badly. Dr.

Eldridge had no idea what he was about to unleash. Sloane Brodie chewed rookies

for breakfast and spit them out. Dex should know.

“Agent Fuller, please advance with theintention of striking Agent Daley.”

Dex didn’t bother taking a stance or preparefor a blow that would never land. His fellow rookies looked at him as if he was

crazy, but soon they’d understand. Poor Agent Fuller. The guy pulled back a fist

and the moment he took a step, Sloane’s roar echoed across the field. Ears

flattened, fangs bare, Sloane leapt toward Agent Fuller who screamed like a

preteen at a Bieber concert and made tracks across the field, Sloane on his

heels looking mighty pissed.

“Thank you, Agent Brodie,” the instructorcalled out.

Agent Brodie wiped his ass with theirinstructor’s polite orders and chased Agent Fuller down the length of the

grassy pitch. Dex glanced around. “So which of you is a medic?”

A few shaky hands went up.
“Great. Get ready for the next lesson. How topatch up a Human scratching post.”

“I know what I
want.” Her voice was soft. Seductive.
            Drake
stopped.
            “I-I
have to ask, though…is that the way it works?”
            His
back teeth clenched.
            “The
ladies you take upstairs to your private room…they all ask?”
            Those
women knew the rules going in. Sex. Hot. Fast. Hard. No promises. No ties.
            Ties
were the last thing he wanted.
            He
turned back to look at her.  “You came to
this place looking for me.”
            She
backed up a bit.
            He
let his lips curl and knew his smile
wasn’t going to be reassuring. “Be very
careful. You don’t want to play with me.”
            He
expected her to scurry away then.
But her chin notched into the air.
“Maybe I do,” she said and her voice made his cock jerk. Sex and sin—that was
what she sounded like just then.

Cowboys & Kisses(Teens of Black Falls Texas, #1)

By Sasha Summers

Blurb:

Allie had big plans for the future. Falling for a cowboy wasn’t part of it.

1. Get out of Black Falls Texas – aka Redneck Hell

(Graduation was eight months away. After that, she was out of there.)

2. Avoid Wyatt Holcomb at all costs.

(Except he was everywhere and kind of hard to ignore since he was hot-and a really nice guy.)

3. Avoid her parents.

(Shouldn’t be too hard to do since her father hated her and her mother pretended nothing was wrong.)

4. Stop thinking about Wyatt.

(Which would be a lot easier if he wasn’t so sweet… and he’d keep his shirt on.)

5. Decide what she really wants.

(Instead of holding onto the past and the guilt.)

“I don’t feel right leaving you here alone.” His voice had
an edge to it.
I paused, trying to think of the right words. “I’m not
your problem.”
He smiled, his brows going up. “You’re nobody’s problem.”
“My parents would argue with that, but that’s not what I
meant and you know—”
He stood up suddenly. “You’re not my problem.”
He crossed to me. “But…Allie, I want you to be.”
I really like the
sound of that.
Which hurt. I’m the
last thing you need.
As hard as it was to
breathe, I managed to argue. “No, you really don’t.” I sidestepped him, needing
distance to keep fighting. “I’m one of those damaged goods on the quick-sale
table at the grocery store. Pretty packaging makes you curious, interested, but
then you get it home and open it up and realize you wasted your time and money
on trash.” I walked out of the kitchen as I spoke. More distance.
His hand caught my arm. “Jesus, Allie, that’s harsh.”

I very carefully pulled my arm out of his hold. “Sometimes the truth is.
My best friend taught me that.”

“Maybe you

            She
nodded, but then said, “Desperate times can call for desperate actions.”
            Those
sure weren’t the words he’d expected. He leaned toward her.
            “You’re
Drake Archer.”
“Guilty.”  He’d confessed to owning the casino, so her
knowing his identity wasn’t exactly a huge surprise.  He’d made headlines in the Vegas press when
he opened the Archer’s Arrow Casino a month before. He owned four other

the woman’s dimples. Cute, curving dimples that winked on either side of her

            The
lady was sexy. She had deep, dark bedroom eyes. Curves that made him hard.
            And…a
damn cute smile.
            “Thanks

            He
had to laugh at that. “Trust me, I’m not exactly hero material.” He was more
used to playing the villain of the piece.

Interview & Tour wide giveaway with Madhuri Blaylock

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome first time guess Madhuri Blaylock to the blog today.
Madhuri, can you please share with us a little about yourself: My parents are from south India, I was born in Vancouver, Canada, lived in Seattle, Washington until I was five and then moved to a small town called Snellville, Georgia, where I lived until I left for New York City to attend Barnard College. I have a younger brother and sister, a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law.
I’ve been married for fifteen years, have a son and a step daughter. These three are my crew and I love them fiercly. We have loads of fun together, laugh constantly, bicker a bit, and Wii bowl like it’s no one’s business. Holla. Some randoms about me: As much as I love Do The Right Thing and Malcolm X, 2fth Hour might be my favorite Spike Lee joint, I used to have a nose ring, during law school my hair was dyed platinum blonde, Nightmare on Elm Street gave me nightmares for months on end, I’m a stubborn taurus, I have six tattoos with two more in the works, I drive a convertible Mini, I had guinea pigs named Fran and Fred, I love Coach and Tami, Thelma and Louise is one of my top five favorite films, New Orleans is my favorite US city, I’m totally superstitious, Glenlivet is my poison after 5pm, my dad pierced my ears and my girl crushes are Beatrix Kiddo, Zoe Saldana and Rashida Jones.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Nope. When I was little, after devouring Gerald Durrell’s books, I wanted to be a zoologist, then this dream morphed into being a veterinarian for large farm animals. Later, I wanted to be a lounge singer in some dimly lit bar in Manhattan and next, I wanted to be an Oscar-winning actress (in fact, my entrance essay on my NYU college application is my Best Actress Oscar winning speech); after that I wanted to own a magazine, which led to writing for a magazine and finally culminized in simply wanting to write.
What is your most interesting writing quirk?
Probably my incessant need to perfectly edit my work. I think I get this quirk from my dad and it is intense – I will pour over my drafts, again and again, trying to find each and every spelling and grammatical error. Hearing that I’ve missed something drives me bananas. Hearing that my book is well-edited, which quite a few readers have noted, makes my heart happy.
Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?
Sure thing. My current book is THE GIRL, which is the first book in the trilogy I am developing called The Sanctum. I  think the best way to sum up THE GIRL is as follows:
The Sanctum, an all-powerful governing body founded by ten families, entrusted to maintain the peace amongst Magicals and ensure the ignorance of humans, has been corrupted by greed and savagery for generations, but is all Wyatt Clayworth has ever known.
Dev, the hybrid demon prophesied to bring an end to The Sanctum and destroy the world for Magicals and humans alike, is not what Wyatt expected to find when sent out on his latest mission. Believed to be hunting a killing machine, Wyatt finds little more than a broken girl with haunted eyes and a bit of a death wish. Drawn to one another for reasons they cannot begin to explain to themselves, much less anyone else, Wyatt is determined to protect Dev and help her realize her mission to avenge the deaths of her family at the hands of The Sanctum.Set against the backdrop of New York City, THE GIRL is described as “outstanding, original, complex, deep and intoxicating”, a “well written, unique…fast-paced read” that  begins as one girl’s simple quest for revenge and evolves into a complicated tale of trust, friendship, honor and love.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

I had been reading a lot of paranormal fiction and feeling rather unsatisfied with the lead female characters in many of the stories, so decided to create my own, badass, take-no-prisoners type of girl. I started taking notes on this girl, her personality and her backstory and before I knew it, Dev was born. From there, came the rest of the characters and the general idea for The Sanctum trilogy and the more detailed story of THE GIRL.
Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?
Right now I’m finishing up book two in The Sanctum trilogy, called THE BOY. It picks up right where THE GIRL left off but is difficult to discuss without giving away some key points of the story line. I can tell readers that you’ll meet Ryker’s parents, learn more about Qi and his sect of Magicals called the Ramyan and meet my shape-shifter, Jedda.
Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?
Living author, I would love to meet JK Rowling simply because I can only assume the brains behind Harry Potter must be fabulous fun. She’d probably be loads of laughs, have great stories to tell and invaluable advice to share. Dead, hand’s down, my choice is Zora Neale Hurston. She was my introduction to women writers of color and has always held a special place in my heart. Plus, she’s the first Black woman to attend my alma mater, proving she is strong, determined and brilliant. An evening with her would be simply divine.
What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – write, write and write some more. Then get a little sleep, wake up and keep on writing.
Can you share with us something off your bucket list.
I want to walk the Great Wall of China, I want to go to Sao Paolo, Brazil and see if I can feel some of the magic Jorge Amado conjures in his work, I want to yell across the Grand Canyon and I want to get drunk with George Clooney
What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?
Veronica Roth’s Allegiant, Hugh Howey’s Wool and Kayti Nika Raet’s Harm. I’m also dying to get my hands on George RR Martin’s, Laini Taylor’s and Cassandra Clare’s upcoming releases, but who isn’t?!!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I’d like to say thank you so, so much for letting me stop by and talk about THE GIRL. Folks have either emailed me or messaged me or written a review on Amazon or Goodreads that is so full of excitement and enthusiasm for the trilogy and Book One that I’m rather speechless. It’s been quite a ride. Of course, there will always be those who don’t like something I’ve done or don’t like the story or my writing, but for the most part, the feedback has been incredibly positive and encouraging and for that I am so thankful. It makes me excited to keep working at this and I look forward to meeting more of you as this journey continues.
Please feel free to reach out to me about The Sanctum trilogy or writing or our shared love of all things tequila or lyric suggestions for me to use on a blog post or your favorite four inch heels or how hot Coach is (if you have to ask “who is Coach?”, I am so sad for you). Seriously, hit me up; I’m always down for a good chat. You can find me on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/thesanctumtrilogy or on Twitter at @madhuriblaylock or my blog at http://madhuriblaylock.wordpress.com.

Rock on.

Without making a sound, Wyatt quickly found the exact place he was seeking. Ducking under some low-hanging tree branches, he ventured into the dark, partially-hidden lair only to be met with a less-than-welcoming blade at his throat. Dev had moved slightly from the hiding place Wyatt left her and although the lower half of her body remained immobile, her arms were functioning just fine, as evidenced by the blade drawing a thin trickle of blood from Wyatt’s neck. One wrong move and she would certainly kill him.

Wyatt slowly brought his hands up to Dev’s, wrapped his fingers around hers and painstakingly maneuvered the blade away from his neck. Only then did he dare make eye contact with her.

“You didn’t really think I was just going to leave you here, did you?” Wyatt asked as he moved to retrieve his blade from Dev.

She wasn’t quite ready to give it up and slashed at Wyatt’s outstretched hand, managing to nick his wrist.

“Crap!” Wyatt sat back on his heels, holding his wrist, and laughed, “fair enough. I deserved that. I should have told you I was coming back, but I couldn’t risk Ryker overhearing or suspecting anything. Trust me, if he thought I was coming back for you he would have spent all night watching me like a hawk. So I left you and walked away and it worked. Now get over it and give me back my blade.”

Despite the laughter in his voice, Wyatt wasn’t playing. He wanted his blade. Her name was Odara and she had been handed down the Clayworth line since the witnessing of The Code of Ten. She was sharper than any Raven blade and fit his hand like a glove. Many had fought and died at his hand thanks to Odara. She was his protector and he wanted her back where she belonged, safely strapped to his hip.

“Kill me,” Dev offered the blade at a price.

Wyatt stood up tall and glared down at Dev, clenching his jaw in irritation.

“Kill me,” Dev challenged him again, taunting him with her smug stare and grim request.

With blinding speed, Wyatt landed on Dev, knocking her to the ground. Before she even realized what was happening, he locked down her arms and liberated his blade from her grasp. Wyatt hovered above Dev, inches from her face, momentarily tempted to slice her throat and end all of this drama. She couldn’t move a muscle.

“You are in no position to bargain with me,” Wyatt angrily whispered, never taking his eyes off of hers. “I am faster and stronger than you. So don’t even think about toying with me like that again.”

Wyatt pushed himself off of her, replaced Odara at his hip and grinned mischievously. “For the record, my blade isn’t worth your life. I just want it back. And I asked nicely the first time.”

Dev remained in her prone position, staring up at Wyatt, uncertain of her next move. She didn’t have the strength necessary to pull herself into a seated position and she definitely was not going to ask for help.

“What?” Wyatt stared down at Dev, knowing she needed help to get up but determined to make her ask for it.

Even in the darkness, Dev could see Wyatt’s eyes sparkling with amusement. He was thoroughly enjoying this little moment between the two of them. His pleasure made her wish she had slit his throat when she had the chance. Rather than requesting his assistance, Dev focused every ounce of her energy on rolling over onto her stomach. If she could do that, she could easily pull herself into a sitting position, Wyatt be damned. She closed her eyes and focused every fiber of her being on the task at hand but nothing happened. Her body failed to react. It didn’t even twitch. The body that had so beautifully saved her from certain death at the hands of those Sanctum fools just hours earlier now couldn’t even roll over. She shook with frustration, wanting to scream to the heavens in rage, knowing such action was futile and beneath her. So she took a calming breath, opened her eyes and glared at Wyatt.

“Ahhhh, you’re back. I was starting to miss your charming scowl,” Wyatt bent low and absentmindedly pushed some of Dev’s hair out of her eyes, “was getting worried there for a second.”

Dev grabbed his hand in her vice-like grip. She hated him and his snarky comments.

“I realize you don’t like me,” Wyatt pulled his hand out of her grasp and gently placed his arms around Dev, helping her to sit, unable to look at her lying helplessly on the ground for another second, “but I’m all you’ve got so by all means, continue simmering in your hatred for me but do so with the understanding that I’m on your side.

“All this stabbing and cutting nonsense has got to end. If you want to hurt me, just imagine it, okay? Pretend. Don’t actually do it. I heal quickly but it still hurts like hell.”

“Now we’ve got to get out of here fast,” Wyatt checked his watch, alarmed at how much time had passed since he jumped out of his window, “and you still can’t walk, which means I’m going to have to pick you up again. Whether you’re okay with it or not.”

He leaned back on his heels and waited, for some reason hoping Dev would respond, all the while knowing she would not. Dev listened with keen interest to every word coming out of Wyatt’s mouth. She most certainly didn’t like him, but she had to respect his determination. He fully intended to get her out of this park and to somewhere safe and against her better judgment, a tiny part of her was relieved. It was the same, small part of her that was fiercely drawn to him, like a sickness almost. And it was the part of her she most wanted to destroy.

Dev hardened her resolve, focused on her intense hatred for all things Sanctum and shut down.

For an instant, Wyatt thought he saw a spark in Dev’s eyes and just as quickly, it was gone. At that moment, for reasons unknown to himself, Wyatt resigned himself to a one-sided relationship with her, one completely based upon his will to help her. He stood up and reached for her, praying she didn’t have a blade hidden somewhere, knowing that if she did, this time she would definitely kill him. To his surprise, Dev wrapped her arms around his neck and allowed Wyatt to scoop her up and into his arms, but he thought nothing more of it, knowing full well she was merely using him to further her agenda.

And that was all right.

Marc started to
stand, but she stopped him with her hand on his forearm.  He did sit back down, but he crossed his
massive arms in front of his chest, leaning back into the couch and looking the
opposite direction, away from her.
            “I
know none of this makes sense. Not sure I do either. I thought that—well I just
thought a little night of anonymous sex with no strings would be something—and
this is a totally selfish thing here, I admit it—I thought I could just have…”
This was going to be much more difficult than she’d planned. Everything she
wanted to say wasn’t right. “I just wanted one more night being single, being
free to choose, being with someone without it being complicated. And I’m sorry.
I realize now that that was a huge mistake.”
            His
passive, hulking frame and dispassionate stare into the distance broke her
heart.
            “Please
Marc, look at me.” He did, but his eyebrows were raised, his eyes contained the
look of someone who thought she was full of crap. She mustered her courage and
added, looking into his sky blue eyes, those eyes she’d gotten lost in, eyes
she would remember forever, “I am truly sorry. I am not a good person at all. I
did this without any regard for your feelings.”
            Their
eyes did connect, and for a second she could see the hurt there, a little dream
in his heart that was dying too, just as hers was. Instinct told her to reach
over and kiss him, hug him, tell him how sorry she was for her behavior, but
she knew that was the wrong way to handle it. As much as she wanted to touch
him and let him know how awful she felt, she needed to keep her distance.
Just tell him the truth and get out.
Marc hadn’t dropped his eyes. He
was searching for something in her face she hoped didn’t show up. He was
looking for evidence she cared for him. Wouldn’t it be wiser to show coldness?
Let him understand there was no future between them?
But was that the truth? Really the truth? Did
all this happen because of her niggling doubts about Ricardo and the life she
would have with him in Brazil? If she were certain of her decision to marry
him, would the night with Marc have happened? She honestly didn’t know the
answer to that.
            “It
was the most beautiful afternoon I’ve spent in my entire life. I will never
forget it. Never, Marc,” she said.
His crooked smile
with the dimple on the right side of his full lips was sexy as hell, and
changed the mask of his face.
            “It
was a pretty incredible afternoon, but hey, no worries, Sophia. I’m not looking
to get hooked up with anyone. I’m getting ready to deploy. This is just a
little R and R before we go. It kind of worked, in a sick sense of the word.”
He looked at his palms.
            She
hadn’t expected that.
            “You
aren’t angry?”
            “For
an afternoon of the best sex of my life? Fuck no.”
            It
was a nice thing to say, but she felt the blunt force of a verbal slap. “I
think it was more than that, is what I’m trying to say,” she said, her voice
low and husky.
            Marc
shot up, put his hands in his cargo shorts. “I’m glad. While you’re working
your way through the cruise ship males, I’ll be having beers with my buds and
probably swearing off Italian girls for awhile.” He began to walk out of the
bar.
            She
had to do something. She ran and stood in front of him, to stop him.
            “Wait
a minute. What I want to say is that it wasn’t just a hookup. I mean it started
that way, but it became more, I guess is what I’m saying.”
            “Well,
that’s fine, honey. And if you get that itch again, I’ll scratch it. No
worries. I’m not going to get pissed off and ruin another good time.” His
brilliant white teeth and blue eyes melted her bones.
            “So
it wasn’t—“
            “You
don’t have the right to that privileged information, honey. You’re engaged to
someone else. I don’t gotta tell you anything about me or how I feel about
anything, remember? But if you want another anonymous hookup, I’m not going
anywhere. We’ve got like twenty days together. We’ve already proven we can let
our bodies do the talking since the words seem to get in the way.”
            He
left the bar. She felt her stomach drop to her ankles.
            It
wasn’t easy to put it out of her mind, the look on his face as he turned, bowed
slightly and walked out of her life. She’d already cried for him once as she
was walking away from him in the Piazza. She’d left a part of her with him that
day, and now today he took away another piece as he walked down the marble
foyer, pushed the up button and left in the elevator.
