Kelly reviews Dark Heat by Donna Grant

Dark HeatTITLE: Dark Heat
SERIES #: The Dark Knight Stories (Dark Kings 0.1-0.3)
CHARACTERS: Many, please see each story blurb
AUTHOR: Donna Grant
PUBLICATION DATE: December 31, 2013
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The Dark Kings are sworn to defend an ancient legacy of dragon magic. But their fiercest challenge lies in the modern world, where a woman’s love conquers all. These are their stories.

This book contains the first 3 Dark Kings prequels + a bonus story, “Passion’s Claim”:

“Dark Craving”

Fueled by ancient magic—and enflamed by human desire—the Dragon King known as Hal can transform himself at will into one of the legendary winged creatures he is sworn to protect. But one thing he can never do is fall in love…with a mortal woman.

“Night’s Awakening”

The dark immortal warriors were never meant to experience human desire. But when Guy, a member of an ancient order of shape-shifting warriors, meets Elena—a mere mortal whose beauty and blind ambition shakes him to his core—all bets are off…

“Dawn’s Desire”

For centuries, the Dragon Kings have hidden their shapeshifting powers from the world. But when a mortal enemy threatens to expose them, the warrior Banan must leave his secret lair in the Highlands to risk his life for the dragons within—and resist the temptations of human love.

“Passion’s Claim”

Banan has been waiting for centuries for someone like Jane. Guy knew it was love at first sight with Elena. Can two Dragon Kings commit to two immortal women for eternity? Or does fate have something else in store?

REVIEW:
Dark Heat is a set of novella’s from Donna Grant’s new Dragon King series. Each story follows one of the Dragon Kings and how a simple twist of fate will change everything for these Kings that are older than time.

Dark Craving: Characters: Dragon King Haldor Wilson & Cassandra Hunter
This was a good story, short and sweet and to the point. Not a whole lot of drama per se. But a great beginning to Donna’s Dragon King series.

Night Awakening: Characters: Dragon King Guy & Elena Griffin
Another Dragon King falls. 🙂 But in a good way. Guy and Elena’s story is a bit of a whirlwind story starting with a death and end with one of them going under cover. Night Awakening sets up perfectly for the next novella Dawn’s Desire.

Dawn’s Desire: Dragon King Brana & Jane
Brana & Jane are just too sweet together. How can you not love a story where the Plain Jane girl is the ultimate prize for the very handsome, yet dangerous King of the blues? In Dawn’s Desire we finally get to meet up the the Dragon Kings enemy and get a little insight into the why.

Passion’s Claim:
This was a bonus story about two Dragon Kings who don’t have any clue on how to woo their women. These to very short stories made me laugh, cry and want to slap some Dragon Kings around.

I loved that Donna put all these stories together into one book so that there was no waiting to read the next story. I am very much looking forward to the first full length book in the Dragon King series. Darkest Flame will be out in April 2014.

REVIEW:
Ahhh just like any good novella Wild Fever was short and sweet and left me wanting more. This was a good start to Donna Grants’ new novella series. In Wild Fever we meet 4 brothers who are carrying on the family tradition of hunting the monsters that kill humans. Vincent is the oldest and has seen more of what these monsters can do than his brothers, which is part of the reason for sending his sister away. Vincent’s job is to keep everyone he loves safe.

But when the monsters they hunt start going after people the Chaisson’s care about Vincent is convinced that someone is out to get them. It is not until Olivia comes home that he truly understands the depth of the monsters that they hunt.

I really enjoyed this story, even if it left me wanting more. Donna did an excellent job of making this novella feel like a full length story. Nothing felt overly rushed and gave us a good idea of the history of the Chiasson family. I am very much looking forward to the next 4 books in this series.

Interview & giveaway with Donna Grant

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome back the amazingly sweet Donna Grant to the blog.

Donna, can you please share with us a little about yourself

I’m a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author with over 30 books to my name.  I live in Texas with my family but my mind is normally in Scotland with my characters. J

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Actually, I studied to be a professional ballerina for most of my life.  It wasn’t until college that I contemplated writing.  Then, my husband urged me to give it a try.  Four months later after I’d written my first book I knew that’s what I wanted to do.

Can you share with us your typical writing day.  Is there anything you have to have while writing?

I’ve been writing since before my children were born, so I’ve learned to write with a baby in my arms, a toddler playing at my feet, and anything in between.  I found the house oddly quiet once they started school. J  Now, years later, I look forward to having the house all to myself as I turn up my music and delve into my books.

My typical writing day is get up with the kids and get them off to school.  I’ll either work out or go running with my hubby before I come home, eat breakfast, answer emails and play on FaceBook for a bit.  Then I move from my desk to my favorite overstuffed chair and my laptop so I can start writing.  I write at least 20 pages a day, so I’ll get 10 done before lunch, then take a break to eat, and do the remaining 10 after that.  Once the pages are done I’ll do copy edits, revisions, galley proofs, or whatever else needs to be done on the other books until hubby and the kids get home.

Most challenging or rewarding part of writing?

My most challenging part of the book is writing those damn synopses. :S  Really do not like those.  The most rewarding is everything else involved in writing.  I love to watch an idea come alive on paper and characters surprise me as I’m writing their stories.  Finishing a book also has a special part.  But the very, very best is seeing your book on the shelves!

Can you please tell us about your latest book?

MIDNIGHT’S CAPTIVE features Charon and Laura.  Charon differs from the other Warriors because he went back to his home town after he escaped Deirdre and for centuries has bought land and businesses to keep it beautiful, but also to protect it.  He’ll go away for several decades, and then return with a new name, but always he protects his people.

Laura comes to Ferness to escape her family and finds a home there, and then a job with Charon. She’s always been attracted to him, but believes he only thinks of her as a friend.  When Charon’s enemies come to harm Laura to get to him, Laura learns who he really is as well as discovers a secret about herself. It will take both of them to defeat Charon’s enemies.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

I knew with Charon that his story would take place in Ferness.  It’s where he has chosen to be, and I knew his heroine would be closely tied to the town and him.  It only seemed natural that she work for him.  That constant close contact and the attraction neither believes the other feels was something I hadn’t done with the Warriors and Druids before.  With the story not taking place at MacLeod Castle, or involving the castle much, again, it was different, and I felt pertinent to their story.

Can you share with us your current work in progress?

I’m writing a bonus short story to put into the yet untitled print edition for the 3 Dark King E novellas that came out last year spinning off my dragon series. Just as soon as that’s done I’ve got to work on a Christmas novella I was just asked to do.  Once those two are done, I’ll get back to DARKEST FLAME, the first full length Dark King book due out May of 2014.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

Lara Adrian, Karen Marie Moning, Kresley Cole, Lorraine Heath, and Stephanie Laurens to name a few

Do you feel that any of your favorite authors have inspired your writing style?

Definitely! Every book I read as well as life experiences help to shape an author’s skills for their next book.

Open your book to a random page and please reads us a few lines.

“Phelan told us that much,” Ian said.

Charon went to body after body on the ground, but none of them was Laura. Panic began to set in. “Laura!”

“She’s no’ here,” Phelan said as he moved debris. “She’s gone.”

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

My TBR pile is huge – and growing.  I get most of my reading done in breaks between books or on vacation.  Yet, I can’t help buying more books. I love to read, as does the rest of my family. There are nights you’ll find us all reading. J

Review of Echoes of Magic by Donna Grant

Book 2 Sisters of Magic
By Donna Grant
Hiding a secret so awful that his only hope for survival is to remain hidden, Grayson has lived most of his life pretending to be someone he isn’t. After years serving as a commander to his lord and friend, Grayson can no longer hold back the past. He leaves in search of answers only to find evil awaits him. Until he discovers an achingly beautiful woman who stirs his deepest passions and all-consuming need.
Adrianna knows what her future holds for her as a witch – loneliness and heartache. She has accepted that. Until she discovers Grayson near death in the forest. Saving him is her only choice, and even as she falls deeper into the attraction surrounding them, can her magic be enough to stop Fate or the evil that awaits them.
My thoughts:
In Echoes of Magic we continue the adventures of the bana-bhuidseach (or witch).  But this time we follow Grayson & Adrianne (who we met in book 1) on an adventure to find answers to the many secrets that Grayson has been keeping.
Once Grayson & Adrianna met it is clear to each of them nothing will ever be the same for them.  Each step of their journey turns up a new secrets and surprises.  But when faced with the biggest challenge of their lives only true love and undying trust will be enough to overcome the evil that has them in its sights.
I really enjoyed this second installment of the Sisters of Magic series.  So far this is my favorite book to the trilogy. Grayson tries so very hard to be the person that everyone else wants him to be.  But when he learns that he needs to be that person for himself he finally learns how to live and love.  Adrianna is a very strong witch and know the pain of loss but is still willing to risk it all for Grayson.   I really loved Grayson & Adrianna.
I am looking forward to third and final book of the Sisters of Magic series:  Dangerous Magic.  Jump in to the world of the bana-bhuidseach and learn that sometimes that magic of love is more powerful than any other form of magic.

Review of Shadow Magic by Donna Grant

Magic. Long has it been debated on whether it truly exists. Yet, exist it does, and in the most noble of women.
With a past soaked in sin and darkness slowly closing in around him to claim his soul, Drogan only wants to live his life in solitude. Years in the king’s service and his numerous deeds directed by the crown have left Drogan with horrendous nightmares and immeasurable guilt…
Serena is a witch, cursed and forever alone. She accepts her future. Until she meets Drogan. With Drogan a passion deep and unyielding awakens inside her. She is willing to sacrifice herself for his love, but can he put his past to rest and embrace the future?
My Thoughts:
In Shadow Magic we are introduced to the world of the bana-bhuidseach.  A bana-bhuidseach is a witch, but these witches have been cursed to forever be alone.  If a witch ever allows herself to love she will lose that love forever.
We met our first witch Serena in Shadow Magic.  She is a very loved and cared for witch in her community, but she longs for something that she can never have.  Love.  The one thing that she will never allow herself to do.  She saw what loving and losing did to her mother and vows to never fall in love.  But sometimes fate has other things in mind.
Lord Drogan of Wolfglynn has come to visit one of his very best friend to help him celebrate his new child.  Drogan is extremely happy for his friend, but can’t keep the darkness at bay even with the happiness for his friend.  That is until he meets the amazingly beautiful Serena.  She changes everything.
Drogan and Serena set out on a journey of a life time in order to help keep their friends safe.  The only goal is to get  friends  and infant child safely to Wolfglynn where they will be better protected from the evil that is after them.   But even as they fight the evil after them Drogan and Serena can’t fight what they feel for each other.
I am so glad that Donna re-released her Sister of Magic Series.  I really enjoyed learning about this new world of good vs. evil.  This was a really good book.  I am looking forward to book 2 Echoes ofMagic and book 3 Dangerous Magic

Interview & Giveaway with Donna Grant

Books-n-Kisses is very pleased to welcome back the Wonderful Donna Grant.  I am honored to have been asked to be part of Donna’s blog tour for the re-release of her ebook Shadow Magic (bk#1 Sister of Magic Trilogy).

Donna Grant has been praised for her “totally addictive” and “unique and sensual” stories.  She’s the author of more than twenty novels spanning multiple genres of romance—Scottish Medieval, dark fantasy, time travel, paranormal, and erotic.  Her latest acclaimed series, Dark Sword, features a thrilling combination of Druids, primeval gods, and immortal Highlanders who are dark, dangerous, and irresistible. She lives with her husband, two children, a dog, and three cats in Texas.  To learn more about Donna and her books, please visit www.donnagrant.com.
Books-n-Kisses:  Hi Donna, Welcome back. We learned so much about you and your Dark Swords series last time you were here I am excited to learn more about your Sister of Magic Trilogy re-release.
Donna: Thanks so much, Kelly.  I’m so happy to be back here and to talk about a backlist series that I get to release again. J

Q1) How does it feel to be re-releasing the Sisters of Magic Trilogy?
Donna: Really great, actually.  I loved the first covers, but these new ones seems to really capture the trilogy, and I’ve gone back in and added a bit more to the books as well as changing a few slight things that always bothered me about the books.

Q2) Tell us about Shadow Magic, book #1 in the Sisters of Magic Trilogy (re-release Nov 1, 2011)

Donna: SHADOW MAGIC shows us our first witch – Serena.  She’s part of a dying race of witches that were cursed by one of their own to never hold the love of a man.  Part of what the witches can do is look into someone’s future and see paths they can take.  Serena, however, only ever sees people’s deaths.  And she’s seen her friend’s death.  She knows there’s only one way for her to save them, and that’s with the help of Drogan of Wolfglynn.
Drogan is a battle-hardened knight who was in the king’s service for years tracking down – and eliminating – traitors to the crown. But what began as a position to be coveted turned into one that brought Drogan and his two companions face to face with Hell because of their deeds.
Serena is able to convince Drogan they need to help their mutual friends, and though Serena tries to guard her heart, passion – and love – won’t be denied.

Q3) I see that Echoes of Magic, book #2 of the Sisters of Magic Trilogy will be re-released on Nov 29, 2011.   Can you share with us a little about the second book?

Donna: Sure!
This book is about Adrianna, another witch, who has already felt the cruel touch of her race’s touch.  Not only did her man leave her, but the child she was left with died as well.  She’s prepared to spend the rest of her lonely life with the gypsies.  Until she finds a half-dead man in the forest, a man she’s compelled to help.
Grayson has been hiding from evil his entire life. After helping Drogan and Serena, he decides its time he face his past and discover what happened to his mother. Only, he never expects to fall prey to the evil so soon.  Or to be saved by a witch. Yet, the more he’s around Adrianna, the more he realizes just how dangerous it is for her to be with him.  Because he evil has marked Grayson, and it won’t be denied.

Q4) And Wow!!!  Dangerous Magic book #3 in the Sisters is scheduled for re-release on Dec 27, 2011. Can you tell us more about the third book?

Donna: DANGEROUS MAGIC is my favorite out of the three.  Maybe its because it features a hero who is so sunk into the darkness there doesn’t seem to be a way out for him.
This book features Francesca, a witch who knows her destiny is tied to those at Wolfglynn.  She is prepared to offer whatever it takes to aid her friends, but when she gets her first look at Cade, she isn’t prepared for the immediate attraction.
Cade has watched and helped defeat the evil plaguing them, but he’s the one the evil is truly bent on killing. There’s no way Cade can defeat something that isn’t wholly human, and with the darkness riding him so hard, he doesn’t know how much longer he can hold onto the last threads of his humanity.
Until Francesca. She pushes back the darkness, and though Cade knows its wrong to be near her and bring such evil to her, he cannot deny the overwhelming hunger for her touch.

Q5) I love that you are re-releasing them all in such a short period of time.  What was the hardest part about re-releasing these books?
Donna: Reading back over them and wincing at what I found.  Lol.  My writing has changed so much in the years since they were first released.  I’m so thankful I’ve had time to read over them again and make the changes I feel they need.

Q6) How do you feel your writing has grown since the original release of the Sisters of Magic Trilogy?
Donna: I think I go much deeper into the characters than I ever did.  I also feel as if my writing is sexier, the tension tighter than it used to be.

Q7) Will we ever see these characters in future books now that you have revisited them?
Donna: I don’t know.  I don’t want to say never, because I don’t know what stories or characters will visit me in the future.:)

Q8) What is up next for Donna Grant?

Donna: Oh, so much.  lol.
I’ve got releases every month for 2012.  Beginning January 31, 2012, the next Dark Sword book is out in stores – DARKEST HIGHLANDER.
Then in February I’ll begin to re-release the first 3 Shield series books.
May 22, 2012 is the first in the Dark Warriors series (spin off from Dark Sword) – MIDNIGHT’S MASTER.
June 26, 2012 is the second Dark Warriors book – MIDNIGHT’S LOVER
Then in July – August will be the final two Shield books.
Besides two more Dark Warriors books to be released in November and December, MIDNIGHT’S SEDUCTION and MIDNIGHT’S WARRIOR, I’ll also be re-releasing my Royal Chronicles series.  I haven’t firmed dates yet.
However, my big year is in 2013 where I’ll be releasing 7 – SEVEN – Dark Warriors books, all back to back from June – December.  Two fulls, three novellas, then another two fulls. J

Books-n-Kisses:  HOLY COW you are a busy girl… But all the better for your fans.

Q9) Looking at your fun facts, I see that your favorite movie is the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.  What are you feelings on them making the Hobbit?
Donna: I’m both anxious and nervous about it.  I will seem really weird to watch it without seeing Aragorn. :S  But I love the world, and I can’t wait for them to take me back to it.  I’m so thrilled they’re making two movies out of it instead of trying to fit it all in one.

Books-n-Kisses:  Donna, as always thank you so much for stopping by the blog.  I have enjoyed having you visit again and I am looking forward to your re-release of the Sisters of Magic Trilogy.
Donna: Thanks so much for having me again, Kelly.  I hope I see you and others on Facebook, Twitter, my blog, or even my forum. 😉
May the magic always find you!

Donna, Welcome to Books-n-Kisses.  I am so excited to have you here today.  Thank you for taking time out of your very busy schedule to sit down with me and talk about your books.
Donna: Thank you, Kelly!  It’s great to be here.

BK: First, I have to know how was your trip to Scotland?

Donna: It was spectacular.  I’ve been wanting to go for as long as I can remember, and to finally see the place that holds such a special place in my heart was amazing.  Words cannot express the untamed beauty of the land.  I will be going back the first chance I get. J

BK: Did you get some great inspiration for new books?

Donna: I did, actually.  How could I not driving amid the Highlands and visiting castles and lochs? lol

BK: Speaking of books tell us a little about your Dark Sword series:

{Bk1 Dangerous Highlander, Bk2 Forbidden Highlander, Bk3 Wicked Highlander, Bk4 Untamed Highlander, Bk5 Shadow Highlander & Bk6 Darkest Highlander}

Donna:  The Dark Sword series is a historical paranormal series set in Medieval Scotland.  I created my own mythology when I put together this series starting with one simple question: Why did Rome really leave Britain?

So, I took my own spin on things and used Druids.  Since no one really knows what the Druids were (evil or good or a mixture), I used them, both good and evil, to put the basis of my mythology.  IOW, I used the droughs, or evil Druids, who used their black magic to call up ancient gods long buried in Hell.

Those gods used the strongest man in each family as a host, and they won against the Romans.  But the gods wouldn’t leave the Warriors, so it took the droughs as well as the mies (good Druids) to bind the gods inside the men.

Yet the gods traveled through the bloodline through generations until a drough was able to unbind them, thereby giving us Warriors once more.

Some Warriors fought back against the villain, and together with other Druids fight to keep her from ruling the world.

BK:  I know the extremely talented Pickyme (aka Tricia Schmitt) did the cover art for Untamed Highlander, Shadow Highlander & Darkest Highlander, which I have to say that I love. How do you think they turned out?

Donna: I think they turned out brilliantly.  I’d been wanting the covers to show more paranormal, but my publisher was hesitant to do it.  I’m so pleased they went ahead and did it with these three books .
BK: Shadow Highlander release date is tomorrow (Aug 30th) and Darkest Highlander will be released January 2012.  Can you tell us what is next in the Dark Sword Series after Darkest Highlander?

Donna:  The series will spin off.  I hate to call it that because it is the same characters and a continuing storyline, but something huge happens at the end of DARKEST HIGHLANDER that there’s a massive change.  So they opted to call it a spin off.  The new series will be called Dark Warriors, and the titles will be different, but I’ll have two sets of back to back releases.
MIDNIGHT’S MASTER – June 2012
MIDNIGHT’S LOVER – July 2012
MIDNIGHT’S SEDUTION – Nov 2012
MIDNIGHT’S WARRIOR – Dec 2012
BK: Do you know how many books you are going to have in the Dark Swords series or is it open-ended at this time?
Donna:  Ah, I know how many, but I can’t say right now.  It would ruin some things in the coming books.  I just turned in book 10, so there will be more after that. J

BK:  Can you share with us a little about the Dark Warrior Series coming in 2012.
Donna:  Sure!  I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want any spoilers out there, but it’ll be a bit different.  I love where the books have taken me and where the characters are going, and I hope the readers do as well.

The stakes get raised with each book, and each Warrior has a lot more to lose – and gain.  Sometimes I even wonder how they’re going to get out of a situation. J
BK: Do you have any cover art for these books yet?  Is Pickyme (aka Tricia Schmitt) designing these for you?
Donna:  I’m supposed to see a cover soon, but unfortunately I have no idea if Tricia is doing the covers or not.
BK: Let’s learn a little more about your Donna.  Tell us 10 fun facts about yourself.
Donna: I love going to the movies.
I get motion sickness.
I hate spiders.
I love a good glass of wine.
My favorite color is burgundy with black running a close second.
I wear a size 3 in kids shoes.
I used to work in accounting.
I have an extensive movie and TV series collection
I’m not a fan of cold weather.
I believe in ghosts.
BK: Who is your all-time favorite author and why?
Donna: Oh, I don’t think I can narrow it down to one.  So many authors have influenced me over the years.  One of my earlier favorites was Johanna Lindsey.  I devoured everything she wrote.

I loved Julie Garwood’s historicals.  Shana Abe has such a unique flow to her writing that just sucks me right into the pages.  I love how Lara Adrian develops her characters and her series.

And I could go on and on. J

BK: Have you ever thought about co-writing a book? If yes, with who and why?

Donna:  I don’t ever say never to anything, but this is one thing I’m not sure I would pursue.  For one, I’m a panster, meaning I have no idea where my story is going when I sit down each day to write.

And to co-write a book, both authors have to have the same idea for the story.  That’s not easy to achieve.
BK: Are you a plotter or panster?
Donna: lol.  Panster
BK: Do you ever get writers block? If yes, what do you do to move past it?
Donna: Not really.  Some days are harder to write than others and paying bills, going to the mail box, or even answering emails will give my mind the break it needs so that I can get back into the story.
BK: How has your family been supportive of your writing?
Donna:  Definitely!  My husband was the one to push me to try writing.  I wrote my first book while pregnant with my oldest, so both my kids have grown up with me at the keyboard.
BK: Tell me about your Druids Glen Series?
Donna: My Druids Glen series was the first series published.  I love writing about Druids and Scotland, and I had such fun researching Druids.  The series centers around three sisters who hold magic to control elements.  It will take special Highlanders to hold their hearts and protect them as only a Highlander can.
BK: Do you foresee writing anymore books in this series?
Donna: No.  It was just supposed to be three books, but then I wrote Lugus’ story because he just wouldn’t leave me alone.  Then, I had so many requests for Frang to have his own story that I gave him one as well.

After that, I just couldn’t leave poor Aimery out there without his story.  J
BK: It looks like you are going to have a few re-releases coming up starting late summer.  Can you tell us a little about these books? Any one you are extremely excited to re-release?
Donna: I’ve been hesitant to re-release these older books.  For one, my writing has changed since they were first written.  I had intended to go back and revise them, but my schedule just wouldn’t permit it.

I was very excited about DRAGONFYRE, which was Aimery’s story.  I loved writing his book.  I’m also really excited to release the first contemporary paranormal I ever wrote – PRIMAL HEAT.  It’s a Halloween novella featuring werewolves.  It was fun to write, and has actually outsold many of my earlier books.

BK: Do you have a favorite character out of all your books?  Who & Why?

Donna:  Whatever character I happen to be writing at the time is my favorite.  I think because I’m so deep in their heads that they cannot help but become my favorite.

BK: Do you prefer writing series over stand-alone books. If yes, why?

Donna: I love writing series.  I love seeing characters from previous books and looking in on their lives once more.  Plus, as a reader, I get more invested in series than I do stand alone books.

BK: What is the best piece of advice you ever got about becoming an author that you would pass on to someone wanting to become an author?

Donna: Keep writing.  Stop revising and just finish the damned book.

It was invaluable advice.
