CHARACTERS: Sunshine & Aurora Vicram
AUTHOR: Darynda Jones
NARRATOR: Lorelei King
RUN TIME: 11 Hours & 40 Minutes

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Sheriff Sunshine Vicram finds her cup o’ joe more than half full when the small village of Del Sol, New Mexico, becomes the center of national attention for a kidnapper on the loose.
Del Sol, New Mexico is known for three things: its fry-an-egg-on-the-cement summers, its strong cups of coffee—and a nationwide manhunt? Del Sol native Sunshine Vicram has returned to town as the elected sheriff–an election her adorably meddlesome parents entered her in–and she expects her biggest crime wave to involve an elderly flasher named Doug. But a teenage girl is missing, a kidnapper is on the loose, and all of it’s reminding Sunny why she left Del Sol in the first place. Add to that trouble at her daughter’s new school and a kidnapped prized rooster named Puff Daddy, and Sunshine has her hands full.
Enter sexy almost-old-flame Levi Ravinder and a hunky US Marshall, both eleven on a scale of one to blazing inferno, and the normally savvy sheriff is quickly in over her head. Now it’s up to Sunshine to juggle a few good hunky men, a not-so-nice kidnapping miscreant, and Doug the ever-pesky flasher. And they said coming home would be drama-free.

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts A great start to a new series!! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to A Bad Day for Sunshine. Darynda Jones is an excellent storyteller. I love the chase of characters she has created in this new Del Sol world. There are many many characters that I loved and quite a few that I really wanted to tar and feather.

I loved the relationship between Sunshine and Auri. They are everything that a mother and daughter relationship should be. I loved that Darynda told the story from both Sunshine and Auri’s point of view. It was great to see how much they love and support each other.

The rest of the characters are so great! I really hope that we do get to explore more of a lot of the secondary characters throughout the Sunshine Vicram series. Or possible spin off stories about the characters.

Oh one more thing: Levi Ravinder….. YUM! And please don’t turn out to be a dirtbag.

Either way I am hooked on the Sunshine Vicram world.

I was a bit worried to listen to this story because I feared that I would hear Charley as Lorelei King was reading. But I should have known the brilliant voice of Lorelei would never let that happen. From the get go Sunshine sounded nothing like Charley and it made listening to this story amazing. Lorelei is so talented with her voices, Sunshine, Auri, Quincy and Levi…sigh… she is a great narrator. If you are a fan of her narrating the Charley Davidson series never fear. While there may be a few side characters that may sound similar the main characters are all new.

I am ready for book 2, A Good Day for Chardonnay (2021). I can’t wait to see where Darynda takes us on this journey.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
A typical day in the life of Charley Davidson involves cheating husbands, missing people, errant wives, philandering business owners, and oh yeah…demons, hell hounds, evil gods, and dead people. Lots and lots of dead people. As a part time Private Investigator and full-time Grim Reaper, Charley has to balance the good, the bad, the undead, and those who want her dead. In this eleventh installment, Charley is learning to make peace with the fact that she is a goddess with all kinds of power and that her own daughter has been born to save the world from total destruction. But the forces of hell are determined to see Charley banished forever to the darkest corners of another dimension. With the son of Satan himself as her husband and world-rocking lover, maybe Charley can find a way to have her happily ever after after all.

REVIEW:
Why Charley!!! Why on earth did you do that. Why did you let him…… Uggggg I can’t believe I have to wait until October to see how Charley gets herself out of this miss.

Eleventh Grave will take you on a wild ride and of course Charley is driving so you know things are going to get crazy. So much happens in this book that is leading us to the end of this beloved series. We do get some questions answered. But we get a lot more questions that need to be addressed. Ugg, I am not even sure how to tell you without spoiling the book for you.

But be prepared, you will laugh, you will cry, you will die a little inside and you will scream at Charley (a lot)!!!!! I really can’t wait to see what happens next. To see how this gets fixed. I want to know so bad but at the same time I am dreading the ending.

Ms. King does an amazing job as always. She brings Charley, Reyes, Cookie and all of them to life. I am so thankful that I started this series on audio!! I will be sad when it is done. I am going to have to start looking for a new series narrated by Ms. King.

Until next time!!!

CHARACTERS: Charley, Reyes and the whole crew
AUTHOR: Darynda Jones
NARRATOR: Lorelei King
PUBLICATION DATE: June, 2016
RUN TIME: 10 Hours & 40 Minutes
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | Audible | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
As a Part-time PI and full time grim reaper, Charley Davidson has asked a lot of questions throughout her life: Why can I see dead people? Who is the hot supernatural entity following me? How do I get gum out of my sister’s hair before she wakes up? But, “How do I trap not one malevolent god, but three?” was never among them. Until now. And since those gods are on earth to kill her daughter, she has little choice but to track them down, trap them, and cast them from this dimension.

There’s just one problem. One of the three stole her heart a very long time ago. Can the Razer, a god of absolute death and destruction, change his omniscient spots, or will his allegiances lie with his brothers?

Those are just a few of the questions Charley must answer, and quick. Add to that a homeless girl running for her life, an innocent man who’s been charged with murder, and a pendant made from god glass that has the entire supernatural world in an uproar, and Charley has her hands full. If she can manage to take care of the whole world-destroying-gods thing, we’re saved. If not, well…

REVIEW:
Another grand adventure with Charley and Reyes. There is a lot that happens in this book and I don’t want to give anything away. But there were some sad tears and a lot of happy tears in this story. I will give you one little tid bit….. There is a Beep sighting.
In The Curse of Tenth Grave we get a few questions about both who and what Charley and Reyes are. But we also end up with a lot more questions about how in the world Charley is going get them out of trouble this time. I can’t wait to see what happens next!!!!
As always Lorelei does and amazing, amazing job of narrating another wonderful story! I am truly in awe of how talented she is. I mean just let her talk to you in Reyes and then come back and tell me that she is not a wonderfully talented narrator!!! Until next time Ms. King!!

NARRATOR: Lorelei King
RUN TIME: 10 Hours & 15 Minutes
PUBLICATION DATE: January 12, 2015
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N | Audible

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
In a small village in New York lives Jane Doe, a girl with no memory of who she is or where she came from. So when she is working at a diner and slowly begins to realize she can see dead people, she’s more than a little taken aback. Stranger still are the people entering her life. They seem to know things about her. Things they hide with lies and half-truths. Soon, she senses something far darker. A force that wants to cause her harm, she is sure of it. Her saving grace comes in the form of a new friend she feels she can confide in and the fry cook, a devastatingly handsome man whose smile is breathtaking and touch is scalding. He stays close, and she almost feels safe with him around.

But no one can outrun their past, and the more lies that swirl around her—even from her new and trusted friends—the more disoriented she becomes, until she is confronted by a man who claims to have been sent to kill her. Sent by the darkest force in the universe. A force that absolutely will not stop until she is dead. Thankfully, she has a Rottweiler. But that doesn’t help in her quest to find her identity and recover what she’s lost. That will take all her courage and a touch of the power she feels flowing like electricity through her veins. She almost feels sorry for him. The devil in blue jeans. The disarming fry cook who lies with every breath he takes. She will get to the bottom of what he knows if it kills her. Or him. Either way.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts Oh man… You know when you pick up a book (or in this case listen to) you have the highest of expectations? Well that was me when I picked up The Dirt on Ninth Grave. I will let you know that I really love Charley!! I mean I really love her. But I was really torn on my love/non love of this book. At first I really enjoyed Charley’s memory lapse but as the story went on I got more and more flustered by this.
I truly loved listening to Charley seeing Reyes through new eyes. I also enjoyed Reyes being so patient and showing a totally different side of his love and devotion to Charley.
I will let you know that I felt the story was a little slow. But the last few chapters had me bawling like a baby (which made driving tough). But the ending. OMG!!!!! The ending of this story is everything you hope and dream for a Charley Davidson story.
I can’t wait to see what is next and how Ms. Jones is going to write herself out of the corner she just painted herself into.
As always Ms. King does an amazing job of bring Ms. Jones words to life. And making Reyes so very very yummy to listen too. 🙂 I am very happy that Ms. King has lent her voice and awesome talent to this series. Until next time Ms. King. Until next time!!

BOOK SYNOPSIS:

All his life, Reyes Alexander Farrow has suffered the torments of the damned. Only one thing has given him hope: the woman who radiates a light that no mortals can see; a light that only the departed can see…

Told from his point of view, BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN chronicles the first time Reyes ever encountered Charley, and how their relationship has been the one thing that can either save him or doom him.

REVIEW PROVIDED BY: Kelly
NUMBER OF HEARTS: 5

I have to start the review by telling you that BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN is not your typically Charley Davidson book.  This is not the light hearted fun full of Charley antics story.  When I received this book to review I was given a warning that this book was dark.  Very dark!!!  If you read the excerpt below you will get a glimpse of how dark, sad and heartbreaking this story is.   Fans of Charley’s series already know some of what happened to Reyes as a kid but in Brighter Than the Sun we unfortunately get an upclose and personal view of his world as a kid.

After reading BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN, I can safely say that I love Reyes even more than I did before.  Reyes lived through hell in his childhood.  It was beyond heartbreaking to read/listen to his back story.  It was heartbreaking to read/listen to him when he first meets Charley.  It is heartbreaking to read/listen to the things that happen to Charley.

It was great to see just how much Reyes loves Charley.  How much from the first moment of Charley’s life that Reyes was there.   This story was beyond heartbreaking to suffer with Reyes, but seeing Charley though his eyes and to learn just how important she is to him was wonderful.

Ms. King does an amazing job of reading this story to us as always.  I am looking forward to the next installment of this series.

Charley & Reyes fans will enjoy this story even if they need to make sure to have a good supply of tissues close by.

Excerpt

I’m curled in a corner of the basement, shivering like a little bitch and licking my wounds from the latest encounter, when I hear my sister crying at the door. I try to assure her I’m okay, but the edges of my vision darken and a beckoning light appears in the distance. I collapse and drift toward it. Weightless. Ethereal.

I always drift toward it.

Not literally. I’ve been locked in the basement by a psychopath. I don’t get out much. But mentally.

You should probably know that even though I’m twelve, the circumstances of my existence are not normal. The things that happen to me are not normal. The things in my head are not normal. And the light that I’m drifting toward, the warmth I feel from it, the . . . forgiveness for all my abnormalities, is as abnormal as I am.

I’m three the first time I see it, and in a very similar state. I follow it. I close my eyes, take a deep breath, and drift toward the white-hot pinprick of light burning the back of my eyes. The closer I get, the brighter it becomes until, just when I think I’ll never see again . . .

. . . she appears.

This tiny being peeking out from between a lady’s legs. I don’t know what to think at first, besides I shouldn’t be looking between a lady’s legs. But she is dying, the lady, so I figure it’s okay. I wouldn’t look at her bad anyway. My head doesn’t always work right, but even at three, it knows not to look at a lady bad.

Anyway, she’s shaking. The lady. Not shivers like if she’s cold, but deep shakes like if something’s wrong. Her head is thrown back and her body is stiff. The nurses hold her down as a doctor pulls at the light. At the thing. The tiny being that was in the lady’s belly, and suddenly it all makes sense.

Not the light, but that whole “Where do babies come from?” thing.

It’s disturbing, but not so disturbing as the lady. One of the reasons my head doesn’t work right is because I feel what others feel. Could ever since I was a kid. A littler kid. I can feel other people when they’re mad or pissed or in pain. That’s how I know when to stay away from Earl. When to run and hide. It doesn’t always work, but it’s damned sure worth a shot.

But right now, I feel the lady’s pain and it hurts and I almost leave if not for the light. I try to catch my breath once more. To be near it. Near her. Just a little longer.

She comes out in a whoosh of baby and liquid and a light so bright, I can hardly see—and I’m mesmerized. Then the pain stops and I can breathe normally again. The lady is still. A solid, constant note sounds in the room, and people gather around her and the baby. Everyone except the man holding the lady’s hand. He is doubled over. His shoulders shake, and I realize the people around the baby—most of them, anyway—are dead. They’re people from the past come to see the light. Ghosts. Whispers.

Their faces are full of wonder, but they are blocking my view, so I push them aside and drift closer. She is wailing like babies do. Then she sees the lady. Her mother. The woman standing beside the doctor, looking down at her. I’d never seen anything like the emotion in the mom’s expression, and I think how it must be love, because it’s soft and caring and tender.

I’m glad for the baby and sad at the same time. The mother touches her face. The baby’s. Tells her to be strong. Stronger than she was. Then she kisses the man’s bowed head, and I think about how I didn’t know ghosts could cry. Then she does the impossible: She steps into the baby’s light and is gone.

CHARACTERS: Charley, Reyes, Beep and the whole crew
AUTHOR: Darynda Jones
NARRATOR: Lorelei King
PUBLICATION DATE: May 19, 2015
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N | Audible

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
With twelve hellhounds after her, pregnant Charley Davidson takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can’t get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. But after months of being cooped up there, Charley is ready to pop. Both metaphorically and literally since she is now roughly the size of a beached whale. Fortunately, a new case has captured her attention, one that involves a murder on the very grounds the team has taken shelter upon. A decades-old murder of the newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows is almost enough to pull her out of her doldrums.
Charley’s been forbidden to step foot off the sacred grounds. While the angry hellhounds can’t traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders. They have the entire team on edge, especially Reyes. And if Charley didn’t know better, she would swear Reyes is getting sick. He grows hotter with every moment that passes, his heat scorching across her skin every time he’s near, but naturally he swears he’s fine.
While the team searches for clues on the Twelve, Charley just wants answers and is powerless to get them. But the mass of friends they’ve accrued helps. They convince her even more that everyone in her recent life has somehow been drawn to her, as though they were a part of a bigger picture all along. But the good feelings don’t last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life.

REVIEW:
As always it is so much fun to be back with Charley, Reyes and the crew. This was my first time listening to a Charley Davidson book on audible. I know crazy right?? But I had started this series reading and normally I stick with the format I started with. But I am so glad that I listened to Eighth Grave. Lorelei King does an amazing job. I am already looking forward to Ms. King reading Ninth Grave to me. Now back to Charley and crew.
Eighth Grave started out a bit slow for me. We pick up a few months after Seventh Grave (so if you have not read stop here) and Charley, Reyes and Beep are still living in hiding. The first part was slow. But there was information that came in handing in the second half. The ending… OMG there was tears, which is bad when you are driving down the highway. So many tears. No I can’t tell you. You have to read and find out. But know that we finally get to meet Beep. And of course her birth could be simple. OH NO!!! Not for Beep!! We get to learn more about Charley and Reyes. We thought we knew everything but we don’t. We also get a look into the future. A very uncertain future that could change everything for planet earth or be the end of mankind.

Can’t wait to see what trouble…. I mean what adventure… no I mean trouble that Charley can get herself into next. I keep hoping for a “and they lived happily ever after”, but that would mean the end of this series. So here is to hoping for a “and they all lived” ending in Ninth Grave.

EightGraveAfterDark

Charley Davidson has enough going on without having to worry about twelve hellhounds hot on her trail. She is, after all, incredibly pregnant and feeling like she could pop at any moment. But, just her luck, twelve deadly beasts from hell have chosen this time to escape onto our plane, and they’ve made Charley their target. And so she takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can’t get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. Of course, if hellhounds aren’t enough, Charley also has a new case to hold her attention: the decades-old murder of a newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows of the convent.

Add to that the still unsolved murder of her father, the strange behavior of her husband, and Charley’s tendency to attract the, shall we say, undead, and she has her hands full…but also tied. While the angry hellhounds can’t traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders like evil sentries, so Charley has been forbidden from leaving the sacred grounds. Luckily, she has her loyal team with her, and they’re a scrappy bunch who won’t let a few thirsty hellhounds deter them.

While the team scours the prophesies, searching for clues on the Twelve, for a way to kill them or at least send them back to hell, Charley just wants answers and is powerless to get them. But the mass of friends they’ve accrued helps. They convince her even more that everyone in her recent life has somehow been drawn to her, as though they were a part of a bigger picture all along. Their presence is comforting. But the good feelings don’t last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life….

If you hang around with dead people, life can get pretty complicated. Take it from Charley Davidson, part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper. Complicated is her middle name. The deceased find her very sparkly. Demons find her irresistible. And one entity in particular wants to seduce her in every way possible.

When Charley and Cookie (her best friend/receptionist) have to track down a missing woman, the case is not quite as open and shut as they anticipate. Cookie’s friend Mimi disappeared five days earlier. Mimi then sends Cookie a cryptic message telling Cookie to meet her at an nearby coffee shop. The coffee is brewing, but Mimi’s still missing. There is, however, a clue Mimi left on the bathroom wall: a woman’s name. Mimi’s husband explains to them that his wife had been acting strange since she found out an old high school friend had been murdered. The same woman whose name Mimi had scribbled on the bathroom wall.

Meanwhile, Reyes Alexander Farrow (otherwise known as the Son of Satan. Yes. Literally) has left his corporeal body and is haunting Charley. He’s left his body because he’s being tortured by demons who want to lure Charley closer. But Reyes can’t let that happen. Because if the demons get to Charley, they’ll have a portal to heaven…well, let’s just say it wouldn’t be pretty.

Can Charley handle hot nights with Reyes and even hotter days tracking down a missing woman? Can she keep those she loves out of harm’s way? And is there enough coffee and chocolate in the world to fuel her as she does?

Welcome to the world of grim reaper extraordinaire Charley Davidson. Try as she might, there’s no avoiding her destiny.

Sometimes being the grim reaper really is, well, grim. And since Charley’s last case went so awry, she has taken a couple of months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above…or at least get dressed. It becomes clear something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. But the more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it.

In the meantime, the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, is out of prison and out of Charley’s life, as per her wishes and several perfectly timed death threats. But his absence has put a serious crimp in her sex life. While there are other things to consider, like the fact that the city of Albuquerque has been taken hostage by an arsonist, Charley is having a difficult time staying away. Especially when it looks like Reyes may be involved.

Just when life was returning to normal, Charley is thrust back into the world of crime, punishment, and the devil in blue jeans in this hilarious fourth installment in the New York Times bestselling series.

Charley has vowed to stay away from him until she can find out the truth…but then dead women start appearing in her apartment, one after another, each lost, confused, and terrified beyond reason. When it becomes apparent that her own sister, Gemma is the serial killer’s next target, Charley has no choice but to ask for Reyes’s help. Arsonist or not, he’s the one man alive who could protect Gemma no matter who or what came at her. But he wants something in return. Charley. All of her, body and soul. And to keep her sister safe, it is a price she is willing to pay.

Charley Davidson is at it again in the sexy, suspenseful, and laugh-out-loud funny fifth installment of the New York Times best selling series.

When the official FBI file of his childhood abduction lands in her lap, Charley decides to go behind her mysterious beau’s back and conduct her own investigation. Because what could go wrong?

Some very insistent men want Charley to hunt down a witness who is scheduled to testify against their boss, a major player in the local crime syndicate. If Charley doesn’t come up with an address in 48 hours, the people closest to her will start to disappear.

Add to that a desperate man in search of the soul he lost in a card game, a dogged mother determined to find the ghost of her son, and a beautiful, young Deaf boy haunted by his new ability to see the departed as clearly as he sees the living, and Charley has her hands full. The fact that Reyes has caught on to her latest venture only adds fuel to the inferno that he is. Eighth Grave After Dark

Charley Davidson #8

22922356

But the good feelings don’t last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life

This was a fun book to read. There are few of my favorites in here with a lot of new authors to me. While all of the stories were good. There were a few that were great and a few that were just a little less than good for me. But I am happy that I did get to read new authors. There are a few stories that I hope the authors will continue into a new series.

Excerpt:

As Cookie and Gemma planned my wedding, a job I did not envy in the least, I watched Reyes. I tried to single out his emotions, but there was so much blisteringly raw lust in the room, I couldn’t get past it all. Damn him and his sexual tractor beam.

A giggle floated toward me, and I saw the woman’s head tilt back again. Clearly, Reyes was slapping on the charm, but why? Was this about an interview? He’d been asked a dozen times for one and never gave any of the other reporters the time of day. Even 60 Minutes had wanted to do a story on him and got the door slammed in their face. But this woman came in, pinned him with a glittering smile, and he caved?

That was not like Reyes.

“I need a pretzel,” I said, ignoring my food.

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts As always Charley is on the case and you know when Charley has a case she runs first and thinks later. But this time there is a lot more on the line then just Charley.

Humor,Tension,Trust ,Tears

These are all the emotions that I felt while reading Seventh Grave and No Body. Seventh Grave was another great adventure for Charley, Reyes and crew. There were so many high’s and low’s in this book it was a real rollercoaster.

Oh my goodness there is so much that I could tell you. But I don’t want to give you any spoilers. So let me leave you with this.
Charley is Charley and kicks some serious ass in this story.
Reyes is as always smoking hot and AWESOME!! (oh and the sexy time is yum-o)
Cookie is one tough Cookie. So don’t mess with what is hers.
Osh… well you will just have to read to find out more. (I have some guesses about this person and really need to send Darynda a few questions)
Ubie is funny on drugs.
Beep……………

If you are a Charley Davidson fan you will LOVE this book. If you are not a fan yet. You really have to read this series in order. There is way too much history for you to just pick up book 7 so please take the time to read the whole series.

I can’t wait to see what Darynda has in store for us next.

Writer’s Tips & Tricks Day 7 part a: Should you Write Specifically for Contests? by Darynda Jones

T&T_edited-1

Should you Write Specifically for Contests?

Hello, and welcome!

I’m here today to talk to you about writing/literary contests and, more specifically, should you write for them? In other words, should you write your opening pages to fit what contests are looking for? What are the pros and cons of doing such a thing? Let’s find out.

Should you write specifically for contests?

Okay, admittedly ‘should’ is a strong word. You certainly ‘can’ write specifically for contests, meaning you construct your entry for the sole purpose of finaling in and winning contests, and quite frankly, I don’t think it’s a bad idea at all as long as you keep a couple of key points in mind.

The hard truth…

First, the odds are against your selling a manuscript to New York on the first 20 pages alone. Unless you’re already published and have some decent sales under your belt, this simply doesn’t happen. So, while you may polish your first 20 pages until they shine with a blinding brilliance, you’d better be able to back that up in the other 330 pages. Agents and editors will know the instant your manuscript starts to fall apart, and they will know why. They’ve seen it thousands of times, so you won’t fool them, I promise.

Second, there is a strong desire to work and rework our beginnings, especially if your goal is to win contests, polishing them until they glow, and then going back and reworking them again. In other words, we fall into the rabbit hole—and habit—of starting a manuscript, then another, and another, and never completing any of them. You do not want to do that. You are never going to sell if you don’t, as Cherry Adair would say, FINISH THE DAMN BOOK!

The pros of writing for contests…

As you may already know, contests reflect the submission process. If those first few pages AREN’T polished to a blinding brilliance, you are not going to get an editor/agent to read past them. Sad but true.

QUICK TIP: A big sign that you have started in the wrong place:

If you have ever said to anyone, “Keep reading. It gets better.”

That is a huge, flashing warning sign that you need to go back and rethink your opening.

Like the above states, if you have ever said to anyone, “Keep reading, it gets better,” you may have started in the wrong place, put backstory where it doesn’t belong, began with too much description of the weather … any number of possibilities, really. Consider tossing out your entire opening and starting later in the story, cutting out the info dump and sprinkling in backstory throughout your story, or tightening your prose until it’s razor sharp.

A fantastic byproduct of writing for contests is that your prose will be tightened and streamlined. You are learning about pacing early on, about introducing key characters quickly and succinctly, about jump-starting your story, making it interesting from the very first word. A nice pace for the first 20-50 pages has a powerful effect on the rest of your story.

So, in that sense, there is nothing wrong with writing for contests. Later, when your manuscript sells, grows up, and gets to sit at the big table next to Nora, you will have accomplished a very important goal: Hook the reader and don’t let go. If there is anything you learn from entering contests, it’s to hook your reader early on. It is a valuable skill. You have about three seconds to grab a shopper’s attention with your prose when she’s browsing the books at Wal-Mart. Once she opens your book for a peek, you’d better have your best foot forward. Make the most of those three seconds.

Sharpening your focus…

What should you focus on in your entry?

The same thing you focus on in every opening scene. You want to set the stage, to orient the reader, and you begin with sharp, crisp writing. That’s a given. Learn the craft and keep learning. Remember, you have to know the rules to break them.

But where should your story begin?

We all know the old adage that the opening should start when there is a change in the main character’s life. Something has happened to set the main character on a different path than he or she was planning.

In a romantic suspense, perhaps our heroine comes home to find her ex-boyfriend dead on her living room floor. In a paranormal, maybe she meets a dark stranger who insists she is destined to save the world. In a YA, our heroine could find herself being goaded into running for prom queen against the evil popular girl, the one who dumped Kool-Aid on her in grade school. On purpose!

But I hope you’ll eventually learn, what I’m still learning, is that our job is not to grab the reader by the throat, nigh ripping out her jugular, trying to force her to turn the page and keep reading. It is to seduce the reader into continuing. To lure her to the next word, to tempt her with the next sentence, the next page.

Your first and best bet in doing this is not necessarily by wowing her with action, but by wowing her with sharp, crisp writing. Writing that is so fresh and appealing, it is impossible for her to stop reading.

Still, understanding your mission, should you choose to accept it, will help.

While the goal of a book is to create a positive emotional experience for the reader, the goal of the opening is to set the stage, to pull the reader in.

THERE ARE FOUR GOALS IN AN OPENING:

1.     Draw the reader in

Step one is to draw the reader in. This means, setting the stage. You must orient your readers lest you risk losing them in a sea of confusion. You can use detail and description. I’m not talking about starting with the weather unless it is important in setting the tone of the story.

2.     Create empathy for your main character

Step two in the process is to create empathy in your reader, make him or her really root for your protagonist. We don’t read to observe the character from a distance. We read to become the character and experience the conflicts and rewards they are experiencing.

PRO TIP: You must create empathy BEFORE introducing any negative flaws in your character, anything that will distance us from the reader.

There are five ways to create empathy: (Need to use AT LEAST two of these.)

  • Sympathy
  • Jeopardy
  • Likeability
  • Power
  • Humor

3.     Set the tone of the story

Tone encompasses the attitudes toward the subject. It may be formal, informal, intimate, solemn, somber, playful, serious, ironic, guilty, condescending, or many other possible attitudes. Tone and mood are not necessarily interchangeable.

  • Tone is what the author feels toward the subject.
  • Mood is what the reader feels.

Establishing the tone can be done by showing the ominous thunderclouds overhead, describing the sultry darkness of the night, or describing how disturbing the loud music is at the nightclub your heroine has ducked into in an attempt to ditch a man she believes is stalking her.

Your environment is an excellent way to set tone, but dialogue is great too.

  • Masters of dialogue:
    • Julia Quinn
    • Molly Harper
    • Janet Evanovich
    • Joss Whedon (the god)
    • JR Ward
    • And many more!

4.     Elicit emotion-your primary objective

If you’ve done all of the above, chances are you’ve already accomplished this last must-have. Eliciting emotion is a given if our heroine is in jeopardy or if our hero has been wounded or longs for something he believes he can never have. But just to throw fuel onto the fire, to really hook your reader, you might throw in a quick twist the reader didn’t see coming.

Perhaps your heroine who is a nice girl and who is liked by her colleagues and who seems to have her act together is actually living a lie. She is on the run and has a secret past that is so dark and so disturbing she is deathly afraid the truth will get out. The bad guy will find her. And while she is checking her email that morning, she receives one from someone who knows her true identity and has threatened to reveal her secret to the highest bidder. Voila! Emotion!

End with a hook!

Next, if you are writing for a contest, you want to end your entry with a good hook. You want that judge to be drooling for the next paragraph, so end with a twist she didn’t see coming.

And the great thing is, all of this can be done in the first 5,000 words!

Nailing your opening is a class in itself; I’m trying to be brief. But all of this together is your hook, your seduction of the reader. If you can master the opening, you will be leaps and bounds ahead of the competition.
