Kimberly reviews Texas Thunder by Kimberly Raye

texas thunderTITLE: Texas Thunder
SERIES #: Rebel Moonshine #1
CHARACTERS: Callie & Brett
AUTHOR: Kimberly Raye
PUBLICATION DATE: 09/01/15
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Set deep in the heart of Texas, bestselling author Kimberly Raye’s sizzling new series proves that men, women, and moonshine make one dangerous combination…

RECIPE FOR DISASTER
The most infamous moonshiners in Lone Star history, the Tuckers and the Sawyers have been feuding for over a hundred years. Sure, the days of buckshot and bloodshed are long gone, but it’s not over yet. To save the family business, Callie Tucker has to find the recipe for the legendary Texas Thunder moonshine. But first she’ll need to make a devil’s bargain—with a red-hot hellraiser named Brett Sawyer.

ROMANCE WITH A KICK
A Sawyer through and through, Brett was raised to never trust a Tucker—especially one as pretty as Callie. But desperate times call for desperate measures. With his ranch going bankrupt, Brett agrees to help Callie find the recipe, sell the rights, and split the profits. Of course, it won’t be easy for these two enemies to work together. But it’s even harder to ignore the sparks of attraction—when just one kiss delivers a kick stronger than any swig of moonshine…

REVIEW:
I had a hard time with this story. Yes it is cute and the premise is good. It is kind of a current version of Hatfield’s and McCoy’s. But the hard thing was the writing. So many repeats of the same things over and over. I was so tired of hearing about about how the grandfather of Callie didn’t care about anything but his moonshine. And Brett thinking his pappy would get better when the ranch was taken care of.

The chemistry is there for the couple and the background characters are interesting. It just seemed really slow to me. And a bit depressing to tell the truth. But again the romance part is good and of course works out in the end.

Kelly reviews Bonded by Laura Wright

With everything that’s going on in Blue’s life, she doesn’t want to force him into fatherhood. Yet as hard hearted as he may seem, Blue can’t turn his back on her, particularly when she becomes the target of someone’s dark obsession

REVIEW:
Bonded is the final book in the Cavanaugh Brother’s series. Bonded wrapped up the series nicely. We learn more about Blue and his mom. We finally get to see Blue come to grips with his past and future. We also finally get to know who is behind Cass’ kidnapping and murder.
I really liked Blue and Emily together. Their relationship was a bit of a whirlwind. But every relationship is different. I don’t mind the fast pact of the love story. My only issue is that I wish we would have gotten more about Cass’ killer. I know it is sick and twisted. But I felt that the story was lacking just a little in this aspect ( I think I have been reading too many straight suspense books of late. Not enough anxiety for me I guess).
But even with that this was a good series and happy that it was wrapped up nicely.

Kelly and Kimberly review Over The Top by Rebecca Zanetti

over the topTITLE: Over the Top
SERIES #: Maverick Montana #4
CHARACTERS: Hawk Rain & Dawn Freeze
AUTHOR: Rebecca Zanetti
PUBLICATION DATE: July 21, 2015
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Dawn Freeze had a huge crush on Hawk Rain for years, and the entire town knows it. It’s understandable―the man is total hotness. That tall, lean body. Intense dark eyes. And always one foot out the door. Now he’s on leave for exactly one week. And this time, he’s made it crystal clear that he only wants one thing. Her.
Hawk’s been fighting his attraction to Dawn for as long as he can remember. She’s his best friend’s little sister, and that means hands-off. Except now she’s all grown up, and her sweet sexiness is exactly what he craves. But just as Hawk allows himself one mindblowingly intense night with Dawn, he learns that everyone he loves is in danger. Especially her.
And the only way to protect Dawn is to push her away.

KELLY’S REVIEW:
4.5 Heart FINALLY!!!! Good golly I feel like I have waited forever for Hawk and Dawn’s book. 🙂 Okay, maybe not FOREVER. But since Against the Grain (bk 1) came out back in 2013. I have been waiting. And Over the Top is was well worth the wait.

In Over the Top we finally get to see into Hawk’s mind. We get to find out what makes him tick, how he views his place in the world and what his darkest fears are. We also get to see the lenght he will go too to protect the ones he loves.
Dawn, we all know that Dawn is a tough cookie. She has to be with three older brothers. But when it comes to Hawk, well it is Hawk the man that she has loved forever. Hawk has forever been out of her reach, but that never stops her for trying to reach for him every chance she gets.
I have loved Hawk and Dawn from book one as I said above. I was so happy to finally read this book. Hawk and Dawn are a force of nature that fights against each other but when they combine they are the perfect storm. They complete each other in every way that is possible. There is so much I wish I could tell you but I don’t want to spoil the book. Just know that there are a lot of touching and slightly painful family moments in Over the Top. Jake had the best line ever in this book. You will know it when you get to it :). The future looks bright. And I am hoping that there are a few more stories up Ms. Zanetti’s sleeve, because I really want to know more about Reece and Adam.
Until next time Maverick, Montana…..

KIMBERLY’S REVIEW:
5 Hearts I have waited and waited for Dawn and Hawk’s story. I mean we have seen this love for the last three books and it is time for them to be together. Yea!

Hawk is the strong silent type. But he has been in love with Dawn for so long he can’t remember not being in love with her. And Dawn feels the same about Hawk but when she gave him a shot (in book #3) Hawk turned her down claiming they needed to be “just friends”… Don’t you hate when that happens? Well now Hawk is back home and the only thing he wants is Dawn in his bed but the problem is that puts her in danger. And that he just can not deal with.

I just LOVED this story! Maybe it was the waiting and feeling the build up of this couple since book 1 or maybe it really was the story and how Rebecca wrote it. Or maybe it was both. But no matter what I loved this story! The lines from The Lady Elks that begins each chapter are adorable! I enjoyed Mrs. Poppins and Mrs. Hudson. What cute old biddies they are! And the sex toy scene is priceless.

I have loved all the Lodge-Freeze boys and Hawk, who while not an official Lodge-Freeze he might as well be. But now I wonder who is next? Reese? Adam? While I know neither of them belong to the family the series is Maverick Montana not the family name so I am hoping Rebecca brings some more cowboys into our lives. But in the mean time Hawk has my heart… Dawn just has to stand in line.

“Okay, look to your left.” Kyla pointed toward the stable as she adjusted her camera later that afternoon. “And stop growling at me. Grumpy cowboys do not sell calendars, Cole.”

“Don’t they have models who do this kind of thing?”

“Yes, but they’re not authentic. You guys are the real deal.”

Cole raised his eyebrows. “The real deal is sweat and dirt and stink.”

“We’re going for pseudo real deal, then. Dirt and stink don’t sell calendars, either.” She motioned at him again. “Lift the brim of your hat up a little, okay? Your eyes are in shadow.”

“Kyla.”

“No growling.”

He raised his hat the obligatory half-inch, and of course as he did, Decker strolled out of the barn.
“Lookin’ good, Cole. Gonna get a little scratchy with those buttons undone, though, don’t you think?”

“Shut up, Decker. Don’t get any horse shit on those fancy shoes.” He looked toward Kyla. “Are we done here yet?”

“I was actually hoping to get a few more in the—”

“Sorry. Union rules. I can only be photographed for an hour a day.”

“Just a few more?”

Cole started doing up his buttons. “I have work to do, Kyla. Go play shutterbug with
somebody else for a while, wouldja?”

Christ. Stupid calendar. Real cowboys didn’t run around with their shirts open, aiming for the best light so their eyes wouldn’t be in—shadow. He shivered. At least she hadn’t suggested waxing.

“You could do worse, you know.” Decker grinned as he watched Kyla walk back up to the main lodge. “Maybe she can post those pics online or something. Might help you get a date for Daniel and Hayley’s wedding.”

Cole executed a middle-finger salute, then leaned down to pick up a rope Kyla’d insisted on using for a prop. “Don’t need a date. We have any early guests coming in today so I can be very, very busy next time she comes around with that damn camera?”

“Just Jess.”

Cole stopped coiling the rope. “Oh. Right.”

“Trying to make like you forgot? I’ll pretend I haven’t seen you check your watch about eighty times today.” Decker laughed. “Gonna get up the nerve to actually take her out while she’s here this time?”

“I’ve got plenty of nerve.”

“Right. She’s been out here three times now, and every single time, you’re like a parched man looking at a desert mirage, but—”

“Shut up. I’m hardly—parched.”

Decker eyed him in that way he had, the look that stripped the lies right off your face and made you tell the truth whether you wanted to or not. “I don’t know. Word in the bunkhouse is that your rep in town is getting a little rusty.”

“I’m not—rusty. And we don’t have a damn bunkhouse.”

“Want to know what I think?”

“No.”

“I think ever since you met Jess, you can’t help but compare everybody to her. And nobody quite measures up.”

Exactly. “Not true.”

“Well, true or not, she’ll be here by dinnertime. Kyla’s leaving for the airport in a while to get her.”

Cole rolled his eyes. It wasn’t like he’d been counting the days or anything. Not like he’d gotten a haircut yesterday or had thoroughly checked out Jess’s cabin this morning to be sure it was shipshape and ready for her.

He shook his head, trying to get visions of Jess’s long dark hair and deep brown eyes out of his brain. “I’m still trying to wrap my head around Daniel and Hayley getting married in a week. I feel like we live and breathe weddings around here these days.”

“We’re gonna have a lot more if Kyla’s Bridal Bliss package thing works out.”

“I suppose that means we’d better finish the spa so she can start selling the packages.” Cole shook his head. How in the world had their working ranch become a wedding-slash-spa-slash- getaway place? “Your woman makes a hell of a lot of work for us, you know.”

Decker laughed. “She makes a hell of a lot of money for us, too. I think the only reason she’s not haranguing us to get the spa done is she’s hoping Jess will help with the design. I have a feeling she’s going to dangle it out as a carrot to get Jess to stay out here.”

“Out here out here? Like, for good?”

“Yep.” Decker nodded. “She’s been planting seeds for months. Getting Hayley to move to Montana got her all puffed up about her abilities. Now she’s turned her sights on Jess.”

“Poor Jess.” Cole shook his head.

“Pretty sure she can handle herself.” Decker tossed a beaten-up leather briefcase into the cab of his truck. “I gotta go charm the home buyers. Hold down the fort.”

As Decker headed out the driveway, Cole turned up the hill toward the new lodge, half of which was Whisper Creek’s new childcare facility and petting zoo. The other half was still rough-framed inside, but by fall was supposed to be ready for duty as a full-service spa.

He strolled toward the building, letting himself in the spa door. He inhaled, loving the scent of fresh lumber and drywall putty. Decker was the acknowledged brainiac of the family, working with his design software for half the night, but Cole preferred to be the guy with his hands right in the mud—literally.

Morning sun came through the east-facing windows and skylights, and he tried to picture what the spa would look like once it was finished. They had fifteen hundred square feet to work with, which might be an architect’s dream—if the architect was ever at the ranch long enough to figure out what to do with all this emptiness. Cole sure didn’t have a clue.

But then he pictured Jess in the warmly lit space, gliding around with one of her yoga outfits on, flashing her warm smile his way, tying up that long, long dark hair into a ponytail he’d just itch to take back down.

He shook his head, trying to erase the vision. Fantasizing about Jess before she even got here was only going to torture him more.

And her kind of torture was the kind that only left a man wanting what he could not have.

Jennifer’s Review of Once Upon A Cowboy

Review (4 Stars): I loved Jess and Cole’s story.  She was a very strong character even though she had a very difficult life and the past that she wanted to so desperately leave behind was coming back to haunt her.  Cole was such a sweet, compassionate guy who was the perfect partner for Jess.  He wanted her to be by his side and knew that she was hiding a lot of hurt that she didn’t want others to find out.  Having them together for Hayley’s wedding brought them closer in ways that neither of them imagined and the chemistry between them was incredible.  I loved the romance between these two characters and the suspense about how Jessalyn’s past was coming to destroy what she had worked so hard to build.

Once Upon A Cowboy is a sweet, cowboy romance that has rich interesting characters and a storyline that will keep you entertained.  This is the third book in The Whisper Creek series and each of these titles can stand alone.  I’m looking forward to reading what is next from this talented author.

Jennifer’s Review of Brokedown Cowboy

Review (4 Stars):  I love stories where best friends turn into lovers and have the relationship that they have been waiting for.  Liss and Connor were two people who had given up on love because they experienced pain and loss in their past.  Liss moves in with Connor temporarily when she is forced to move suddenly and the sparks begin to fly once they spend time with one another in close quarters.  Liss was the perfect match for Connor because she pushed him to continue living when he was happy just to stay in his house and drink himself into oblivion every night. She made him feel things that he thought he would never feel again after the death of his wife and brought him back from the brink.  It was touching watching Connor come back to the man he used to be because of the love of one special woman.
Ms. Yates has always done a wonderful job on creating love stories that will definitely touch your heart. Liss and Connor’s story is the second installment in the Copper Ridge series and I was captivated watching them find their way to each other after all these years.  I missed Eli and Sadie’s story but I’m looking forward to catching up with them and the next book in this delightful new series.

Midnight Ride
One bucking bronco…

Oklahoma ranch hand Tyler Jenkins is too young, too sexy, and too damn wild to be tied down by any single woman—for more than a few steamy hours…

One hard-working widow…

Widowed rancher Janie Smithwick is too busy paying off her debts to play rodeo with a reckless young cowboy like Tyler—no matter how hot he gets her…

One midnight ride they’ll never forget…

As a rule, Janie should be dating a man her own age, like her handsome neighbor Rohn—not the twenty-four-year old ranch hand he employs. But once Tyler gets Janie alone—held tight in his arms, pressed against his hard muscled body, burning with desire—the widow realizes that some rules, like broncos, are meant to be broken…

The sun was riding low over the horizon when Janie followed Tyler outside to his truck. “Thank you very much for all your help, but you really didn’t have to wash my dishes.”

“Sure I did.” Tyler grinned, the charm oozing from his every pore.

Janie couldn’t help but smile in response, even as she disagreed. “No, you didn’t.”

He leaned back against the open tailgate and crossed his arms. “I did if I want you to invite me again.”

“Oh, that was your plan, was it?” She laughed as she turned and leaned next to him, hands braced on the metal of his bed.

“Yup.” He shot her a sideways glance. “Did it work?”

“Yeah. I think it did.”

“Good.” He nodded. They both sat and stared toward the brilliant colors lighting the sky while the silence stretched between them, until Tyler broke it. “Do you ever hear from your dad?”

The question surprised her. “Not really. No.”

“Did he come to your husband’s funeral?”

“No. He called, but he was busy with work and couldn’t get away.”

The wound hadn’t quite healed over. She still felt the emotional scars when she talked about her mother’s death or her father’s emotional abandonment.

This conversation brought a little closer to the surface the dull ache she usually kept buried. She didn’t resent Tyler for asking, even if she was shocked he was interested. Most guys his age would be out with their friends, yet here he was, sitting on a tailgate at sunset talking to her about things much too serious for such a pretty evening. He was probably meeting his friends later and had to kill time until then. That scenario made sense.

She wondered where he went with his friends, and how the girls there reacted to the likes of Tyler and Colton walking into a bar. Given how good they both looked, they were probably swarmed the minute they got in the door.

“I’m sorry that all happened to you.” He covered her hand with his and squeezed before letting go.

The touch hadn’t lasted long, but long enough for her to know he meant what he said. That he was sincere in his empathy.

Janie should probably be getting used to Tyler doing the unexpected. She wasn’t. Surprised yet again by this guy, she said, “Thanks.”

The silence descended once more until he turned where he leaned and angled his body toward her. “So why are you only cooking for one?”

At the question, she turned her head to look at him. “Excuse me?”

“You said you don’t like cooking for only yourself. Aren’t you dating?”

That elicited a laugh she couldn’t control. “No.”

Dating. Who would she date? And where the hell would she meet him? Though thanks to Rene, she’d have to sit through church with a stranger her friend seemed intent on setting her up with. Maybe that was why she wasn’t dating. Interfering friends.

“Why not?” he asked.

Her mouth dropped open at his bold question. She expected this kind of prying from Rene, but not Tyler. Still, she felt compelled to answer. “It really hasn’t been that long since Tom . . .”

After a beat, Tyler asked, “How long has it been? I thought it was about a year.”

“Yeah, about.”

“So you’re not ready?” His eyes pinned her. He obviously wasn’t letting this go.

“I don’t know. I haven’t really thought about it. There’s been so much else to think about.”

“Like the hay harvest.”

“Yeah, that, and the broken fence.” And the lessons. And the bills. And the animals. She sighed. “Just everything.”

“So if someone were to, say, take care of that harvest for you, and that fence was fixed so you had time to think about yourself, do you think you would be ready?”

“To date?”

“Yup.” His intense blue eyes never leaving her face, Tyler dipped his head in a nod.

“I don’t know.” She shrugged. “I guess. Why are you so interested?”

“Because I’d like to ask you out, but only if you’re ready for that.”

Ask her out? She knew he could flirt with the best of them, and suspected he was a ladies’ man, but that Tyler might want to go out with her was so far off her radar, she nearly fell off the truck’s tailgate.

“So, what do you say?”

She didn’t know what to say. Even if she were ready to start dating, which she wasn’t, Janie had a feeling she’d never be prepared to be with a guy like Tyler. Too young. Too wild. Too tempting. “How old are you, Tyler?”

“I’ll be twenty-five next month.”

“So you’re twenty-four.” At least he was a couple of years older than she’d first assumed when she thought he was twenty. Still, he was too young. Or maybe she was just too old.

“Yeah. Technically, I’m twenty-four, for now. Why?” He shrugged. “Does it matter?”

She laughed. “Yes.”

“Why?” His brow creased beneath the brim of his hat. He really didn’t understand.

“Because I’m twelve years older than you.”

“I know, and next month you’ll only be eleven years older than me. You said you were thirty-six the night we met. So?”

She’d forgotten she’d mentioned her age that night. Maybe Rene was right. Maybe Tyler did have a Mrs. Robinson, older-woman sex fantasy. If so, she didn’t think she was the one to fulfill it. “What do you mean, so? That’s more than a decade.”

“And?”

“And that’s a big difference.”

He blew out an exaggerated breath from between his lips. “No, it isn’t. Janie, it doesn’t matter to me. Why does it matter to you?”

“I don’t know. It just does.” She didn’t want to tell him that being with him made her feel old. That her worst fear would be sitting in a restaurant with him and having the waitress assume she was his mother.

Tyler pushed off the tailgate and took a step so he was standing directly in front of her, so close that she was in the shadow of his hat.

“No. You’re not getting away with that answer. Tell me. What’s really wrong?” His voice had dropped low as he questioned her. It sounded husky, and even more sensual than usual.

With him standing so near, she could see the day’s worth of stubble darkening his cheeks and chin. She might want to think of him as a kid—it would make it a hell of a lot easier to not succumb to him—but Tyler was a grown man. And a hell of a man he was. She couldn’t deny that as she was eye level with the bulging muscles of his chest that stretched the cotton of his T-shirt.

Janie swallowed and tried to regain her focus. “You should be dating girls your own age.”

That was one truth about her avoidance she would tell him. Twentysomething guys should date twentysomething girls.

“I have. I’ve gone out with plenty of them, but not a one of them was anything like you.” His blue gaze pinned her even as she averted her eyes to avoid the intensity she saw in them.

Janie wasn’t used to being the object of a man’s attention anymore. At least, not like this. “So I’d be a novelty?”

“A novelty, no. But you are one of a kind, Janie Smithwick. Don’t you ever forget it.” He raised his hand to capture her chin between his thumb and forefinger before he lowered his head, close enough she could hear him breathing.

The brush of his lips against hers was so brief, so gentle, it was almost as if she’d imagined it. He pulled back, but his gaze grabbed and held hers.

“When you’re ready to take a chance on me, you let me know.” He released his hold on her and turned to walk toward the driver’s door.

She was still speechless, but managed to have the good sense to get off his tailgate before he drove away.

With one hand braced on the top of the door, he glanced back at her. “I’ll be back to hay that field as soon as I can.”

Janie nodded and he climbed inside, slamming the door after him. She realized she’d yet to speak.

What could she have said? Her lips were as numb as the rest of her from the shock of Tyler’s kiss. She watched him pull to the end of the driveway and stop before turning. He waved one arm out the window as he drove away, and only when he was out of sight did she remember to breathe again.

Jennifer’s Review of Midnight Ride

Review (4 Stars): Janie lost her husband to illness and was left to care for his ranch all by herself and was worried about how she was going to make ends meet.  A chance encounter with Tyler, a local ranch hand, changed everything for her when he agreed to do odd jobs around the ranch and help her get the ranch up and running again.  Tyler couldn’t believe that Janie lived down the road from where he worked and he found himself wanting to spend more time helping this beautiful young woman.  Together, they found that love can find you when you least expect it and can change your world forever.

I instantly connected with Janie from the very beginning of Midnight Ride.  She lost her husband a year before and was determined to keep her ranch running even if she had to sell almost everything to do it.  She wasn’t expecting to meet a man like Tyler, who reminded her that she was still a desirable woman and caused her heart to race whenever she was around him.  When we first met Tyler, he was a player that was looking to score as many women as he could and wasn’t quite ready to settle down until he met Janie.  She was everything that he was looking for and he found himself wanting to spend as much time with her as possible even if it meant just helping her fix things around the property.  The heat between the two of them was electric and you could just feel the chemistry between them as you turned the pages.  I love cowboys and Midnight Ride is at the top of my favorite cowboy romances.  Ms. Johnson is a new author for me but I am looking forward to read more from this talented author.

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts Another great Montana Men story by Ms. Ryan. I loved Blake and Gillian’s story. There was so many ups and downs in this story. Every page brought to light a new issue and a new way to deal with said issue. While there were a few story lines that didn’t get explored as much as I would have liked, I loved how much Gillian grows as a person.
Blake is what every wounded bird ever needs. Blake is patient, yet push. He is gentle, yet doesn’t use too many kid gloves and loves so deeply..
Can’t wait to see what Ms. Ryan has in store for us next.

Chapter One

Three long days without a word. No call. Not even a text. Ella stared at her phone, willing it to ring. She tapped her finger on the screen and stifled the urge to call Lela for the hundredth time that morning.

The coffee shop buzzed with activity. People headed off to work with their lattes and scones. She sipped at her caramel macchiato, reading over the newest projections for the cosmetics line debuting in March on her laptop. The numbers looked promising.

Ella jumped when her phone vibrated on the table. She snatched it up and read the caller ID.

“Finally.” She swiped the screen to accept the call. “Lela—”

“Where have you been?” Uncle Phillip’s demand surprised her.

Why did Uncle Phillip have Lela’s phone?

Ella opened her mouth to answer her uncle’s question, but he spoke first.

“I oversee the estate. You answer to me.”

“Twisting the truth again, Uncle. Ella and I sign off on everything,” Lela said, her tone unusually sharp. “You’re just a watchdog, there to ensure we adhere to the terms of the will. You have no real power, but you’ll do anything to steal it away, won’t you?”

What? Ella had never heard her sister talk to their uncle in such a disrespectful and spiteful way, or anyone for that matter. Why did her sister call and not say anything to her? Maybe she’d pocket dialed?

“Lela, it’s me. What is going on?” Ella got no response. Uncle Phillip continued to speak over her.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about, my dear.” Uncle Phillip’s soft voice belied the steel in his words. “Don’t make me ask again. Be a good girl and tell me where you’ve been?”

This time, her sister answered, but didn’t explain a damn thing. “Uncovering your dirty secret. I know what you did,” her sister accused.

Secrets?

Butterflies in Ella’s stomach fluttered like a flock of birds taking flight. The uneasy feeling she’d carried with her these last days intensified.

Ella gathered up her laptop and notebook, stuffing them into her oversized tote. She dumped the dregs of her coffee in the trash on her way out the door. The apartment was only a block up from her favorite café she had breakfast at every Tuesday when the house staff had the day off. She kept the phone to her ear and headed home to find out what the hell was going on.

“You won’t get away with this,” Lela’s voice raised in pitch. It took a lot to rile her sister. Whatever Uncle Phillip had done touched a nerve.

“Whatever you think you know doesn’t amount to anything without proof.” Her uncle used that chilling, yet utterly calm voice.

Ella picked up her pace, sensing the escalation of the situation into something more than just an argument about company business. She pulled her bag close to her side under her arm and ran for her building, knocking elbows and shoulders with other pedestrians. No time to apologize, she ignored their outraged remarks.

“Oh, I have the proof.”

Proof of what?

“You’re lying.” Uncle Phillip let out a nervous laugh.

“You wish.”

Ella past her building’s doorman and ran for the elevator, pushing the button three times, frantic for the doors to open.

“Where is it? Show me.”

Come on. Come on. The elevator doors finally opened and she rushed inside and pressed the button for the penthouse. Ella prayed she didn’t lose the cell signal and drop the call. She only ever got one bar in the elevators.

“You think I’d be fool enough to bring it here. To you? I’ll see you in jail before this day is over.”

“I’ll see you in a grave first.”

The ice in her uncle’s tone frosted Ella’s heart. The evil laced there erased all trace of the man she knew. He meant those ominous words.

Lela gasped and let out a startled shriek. Ella didn’t want to believe her uncle actually struck Lela, but that’s what it sounded like.

“What. Did. You. Find?”

“Everything,” Lela sputtered.

What? What are you talking about?

“If you’re lying to me—”

“Let me go. It’s over. There’s nothing you can do. I can prove you did it.”

Did what?

“Don’t look at him,” Uncle Phillip snapped.

Him? Who else is there?

“Please, do some—”

“He’s not here to help you, you stupid girl. He works for me. Everyone works for me. You should have left well enough alone.”

Lela shrieked again. Ella’s heart dropped into her stomach.

“This is your final chance. Tell me where it is and I’ll make this quick. Refuse and I’ll take my time. You’ll know the meaning of the word pain when I’m done with you.”

Touch her and I will make you pay.

“Go to hell.”

“Where is it, you little bitch?”

“You will pay for what you’ve done. I’ll never cave.”

“Tell me what I want to know, and maybe, I’ll show you mercy.”

“You won’t…get…away…with this,” Lela stammered, something choking off her words. “The truth will…roll out. Come out.”

Something about the way she said it the first time struck Ella, but her mind couldn’t process anything right now. She slammed her palm against the elevator doors, wishing the damn thing would hurry up.

Please, Lela, get out of there.

“Last chance. Where did you hide it?”

The intensity in his voice sent a shiver up Ella’s spine.

The elevator doors finally opened. She ran down the hall to her door, shoved it open, and nearly tripped over Lela’s suitcase. Where had she been?

“If you won’t help me, I’ll find someone who will.”

Who is she talking to?

“Uncle Phillip, please. Put the gun down.”

“Where. Is. It?”

“I’ll never tell you where I hid it.”

Ella ran across the living room. Her gaze locked on her uncle’s outstretched arm, the gun in his hand level with her sister’s chest. Her father’s blood red ruby pinky ring winked in the morning light streaming through the windows.

“Tell me,” her uncle yelled.

“Never.”

“Then you’re of no use to me anymore.”

The crack of the gunshot stopped Ella in her tracks. Her sister’s eyes went wide when the bullet plowed into her chest. Blood blossomed over her cream colored sheath dress, like some gruesome poppy. Lela wilted in slow motion into a heap on the floor. Her legs kicked in a quick jerk, and she never moved again.

Ella stood frozen, rooted to the spot just outside the library doors, her gaze fastened on her sister’s lifeless green eyes.

“Damnit, we needed her alive.” A man she couldn’t see said from inside the room. It took her a second to place the voice. Detective Robbins.

What is he doing here? Why didn’t he help?

Self preservation kicked in and she scurried to the side of the door. Hands shaking, her stomach in knots, a whirlwind of thoughts circled her mind, but nothing explained why her uncle killed her beautiful sister. It couldn’t be, she denied the stark reality. She leaned over and spied through the crack in the open door.

Uncle Phillip kneeled next to Lela and touched his finger to her bloody neck. “If I’d had more time, I could have gotten her to talk.”

“You mean if you hadn’t lost your temper.”

Ella’s heart broke into a billion sharp pieces that slashed her soul to shreds. Her other half — gone. The emptiness engulfed her. She covered her mouth with both hands to hold back the scream of pain rising up her aching throat. Her eyes filled with tears and Lela’s face, the same one Ella saw in the mirror each morning, swam in front of her.

Uncle Phillip stood, tugged at one shirt cuff and then the other to straighten his crisp white shirt. Her father’s ruby cuff links sparked with a glint of light from the overhead chandelier. He ran a hand over his more gray than dark brown hair, smoothing it back. Composed again, he turned to the door. Her breath hitched and stopped. She thought he saw her. His next words startled her even more.

“The stupid girl doesn’t know when to quit.” He pulled a handkerchief from his gray slack’s pocket and wiped his sweaty face, devoid of wrinkles thanks to his many trips to the dermatologist for Botox injections.

“You’re lucky she called me.”

“Did she tell you what she found?”

“No. She asked me to meet her here. Her confidence in whatever she had on you convinced me to take her seriously. If she actually had something and shared it with anyone, you’ll go down for everything.”

“Don’t think you won’t fall with me,” her uncle threatened.

The detective moved forward, blocking her view of her uncle, and stared down at Lela. “What do you want to do with the body?”

Lela was a body. Bile rose in Ella’s throat.

Her uncle clinked open a crystal decanter at the bar across the room, pouring himself a drink of the expensive bourbon he preferred. She prayed he choked on it.

“Give me a minute to think.” The ice in his voice melted and turned less definitive and more hesitant.

“We need to find that evidence. If it falls into the wrong hands—”

“Shut up.” Her uncle sounded as out of control as she felt. Her insides in chaos, not a single thought of what to do taking shape in her mind.

“We need to retrace her steps over the last few days. Find out where she went. Who she saw. We’d have the state attorney and FBI banging down the door if she gave the evidence to anyone. She hid it somewhere. We need to find out where and get it.”

“Easier said than done. She was smart.”

“Not smart enough to pull this off. She contacted you without ever considering your association with me. She was naive.” He toed Lela’s still body with his Italian leather shoe.

“Our business arrangement has been mutually beneficial, but if you think I’ll be your patsy, you’re wrong. So, think, damnit, where would she hide the evidence?”

“I don’t fucking know.” Her uncle slammed the empty glass down on the desk. “But Ella might.”

“Do you think Lela told her what she uncovered?” Detective Robbins asked.

“No. Ella asked me and the staff several times if Lela came home or called. I’m almost certain Lela worked this out on her own and left her recalcitrant sister out of it.”

“Almost certain isn’t good enough. Why the hell didn’t you cover your tracks better?”

“I did.”

“If you did, we wouldn’t be here right now.”

Ella needed to call the police and have them arrest these two for killing her sweet, gentle sister. But the police were standing right there, helping destroy her life.

The room was silent for a moment, and Ella was certain they’d hear her ragged breathing. She jumped when her uncle spoke again.

“Detective, let me tell you a story.” Uncle Phillip’s voice was eerily calm. “Our studious, prim, Lela earned her master’s degree and worked as an executive at the company to satisfy the terms of the will and earn her place at Wolf Enterprises. Sadly, her Princess Party Girl twin sister barely made an effort, working in the mailroom and every other odd job at the company. While it satisfies the general terms of the will, Lela’s carried the weight and shouldered all the responsibility for the business.

“Lela finally had enough and confronted her sister right here in this room. Ella, party girl that she is, had been out all night and was high, not at all in her right mind. The fight escalated. Ella knows I keep a gun in my desk drawer. She grabbed it and shot Lela. She panicked, but somehow had the wherewithal to try to cover it up, making it look like a robbery gone wrong. With Lela gone, she will inherit the company and other Wolf assets.

“It’s heartbreaking, isn’t it? Such a pity. Lela had such a promising future. I couldn’t be more heartbroken.

“Set the scene, Detective, and then find Ella. Take her to a hotel. Not a dump, but not extravagant either. She’s hiding out. Make the place look like she’s been on a bender, drinking, doing drugs. The pain and grief send Ella over the edge and she ODs. No one will question it. Use your contacts in the police department and morgue to prove what happened…make the evidence show Ella murdered Lela.

“This is more than I signed on for,” Detective Robbins said.

“Don’t think you’re so indispensable. There are plenty of others on my payroll in this town, higher up the food chain than you, that would do my bidding without blinking.”

“I’ll get it done. I’ll need to use some of those contacts to pull this shit off.”

“You know who to use to make this clean. I want all the evidence, reports, and public perception to corroborate the scenario I’ve outlined.”

Uncle Phillip kneeled by Lela and used his handkerchief to remove her diamond stud earrings. The ones their mother always wore. He unclasped Lela’s bloody necklace with the pendant of a heart made out of roses that matched hers. Ella reached up and wrapped her trembling fingers around the one against her chest and sighed. Lela’s ring came next. Ella gave her the emerald encircled with diamonds for their twenty-first birthday. The night they shared a quiet dinner in an exclusive uptown restaurant and planned their future and fulfilling their parents’ wishes and dreams for them.

She took a step forward to snatch the ring and everything else her uncle took from them back. She wanted to claw his eyes out and see him in a grave. Not her sister. Not Lela.

“What are you going to do with that?” The detective indicated the handful of gold and gems.

“Don’t worry about it. Do your job. The one I pay you extremely well to do.”

Her uncle went to the bar, grabbed a towel, and wiped down the gun. He wrapped it in the towel and handed it to the detective. “The household staff knows I keep this gun in the top drawer of my desk. Unlocked. Easy enough for Ella to take it and use it on her sister. Plant it, along with the drugs and alcohol at the hotel room. Make sure the report shows Ella’s prints are on the gun and it is a ballistic match to the bullet in her. Tomorrow morning the staff will arrive for work and discover the body. You’ve got until then to find Ella and kill her.”

Ella had wasted enough time. She needed to get away. Fast.

Her gaze fell on her dead sister. Her soul pleaded with Lela to wake up and make this all just a bad dream. But Lela remained motionless on the floor.

Ella backed away from the door, turned, rushed back to the foyer, and grabbed her sister’s suitcase, coat, purse, her own tote, and walked out the door, closing it with a quiet snick of the latch. Maybe she’d find a clue in her sister’s things.

She took the elevator down and walked through the lobby and out the door in a daze. The doorman took the coat draped over her arm. “Let me help you with that, Miss Wolf.”

She mechanically stuffed her arms in the sleeves of Lela’s favorite cobalt blue coat. Her sister’s scent brought tears to her eyes. She blinked to keep them at bay. The doorman hailed her a cab and she tossed her stuff in the backseat and slid in.

“Where to?”

Ella couldn’t think past the fear and grief eating away at her insides. She didn’t know where to go or who to turn to that she could definitely say wasn’t in her uncle’s pocket. Detective Robbins would check with all her friends. She couldn’t risk going to one of them and putting them in danger.

Her gaze fell on her sister’s suitcase and the baggage tag still on the handle. She didn’t know the BZN airport code. The purse lay on her lap, her fingers clutching it in a death grip. She made herself relax and unzip the bag. She found the airline ticket voucher inside. Bozeman.

Why did you go to Montana?

They hadn’t been back to the family ranch since her father died in a plane crash when they were fourteen.

“Where are we off to?” The driver asked again, pulling her out of her dark thoughts. A plan started to form.

“Airport.” She barely choked out the word.

She’d retrace her sister’s steps, find out what she’d been doing the last three days, where she went and who she saw. She’d find the evidence Lela died for, and God help her uncle when she did.

Jennifer’s Review of At Wolf Ranch

Review (5 Stars): At Wolf Ranch is one of those books that takes a hold of you from the first page and won’t let you go until you reach the very end.  I was hooked and I stayed up all night reading this exciting thrill-ride of a romance.  Ella Wolf discovers that her twin sister has been murdered and she is now in search of answers at her family’s abandoned Montana ranch, the last place her sister went before she died.  There lies secrets that someone will kill to protect and who currently wants to frame Ella for the murder of her beloved sister.  Gabe finds Ella alone and half-frozen on the road to her family’s place and is instantly drawn to this beautiful young woman.  He will do anything to protect her and together they must work to clear Ella’s name while discovering that they may have a future together after this is all over.

I loved At Wolf Ranch!  Gabe and Ella were a wonderful couple together and I loved that Ella wasn’t just the party girl that everyone thought she was.  She was a smart, thoughtful and courageous woman that deserved to have someone in her life like Gabe after all the loss that she had experienced at a young age.  Gabe was such a great guy and was exactly what Ella needed to help her prove that she wasn’t her sister’s killer.  She could have had anything she wanted in her life but what she wanted was Gabe and actually having a place and a family to call home.  At Wolf Ranch was a great romance with thrills, suspense and a sexy cowboy hero that will make you want to visit this Montana town.  Ms. Ryan is a new author to me but she is now on my auto-buy list after reading At Wolf Ranch.

Jennifer’s Review of When It’s Right

Review (4 Stars): The opening chapter of When It’s Right gutted me because I couldn’t believe what happened to Gillian by her own family.  I couldn’t believe how this sweet, caring woman was able to deal with all the pain and trauma that she had experienced and still was a wonderful person because of it.  She moved to her grandfather’s ranch, whom she had never met, with her younger brother because they had nowhere else to go and she couldn’t really care for him in her current condition.  By going to Montana, she was able to see how family should treat each other and her grandfather spent every day trying to make up for what she had been through.  Blake was instantly drawn to Gillian and had this fierce need to protect her at all costs.  Gillian had a hard time trusting others but Blake slowly worked his way into her heart and gave her the love she rightfully deserved.

When It’s Right is a touching romance that is emotionally-charged and shows that love can find a way to heal the pain of your past.  Gillian suffered a lot of emotional and physical pain at the hands of her parents and thankfully, Blake and her grandfather were able to help her soul heal from the abuse she experienced.  The story in When It’s Right is a tad on the darker side but I believe that Gillian and Blake’s journey to love is worth every minute of it.

REVIEW:
This was really hard to read.It seemed like it was written as a short erotic story and the author decided to add some back story to it. The only thing missing was the “boom chicka bow bow” music playing in the background.

Worst part was the sex scenes weren’t even that great. Won’t be continuing with this series.

SERIES #: The Cavanaugh Brothers #3
CHARACTERS: Cole Cavanaugh & Grace Hunter
AUTHOR: Laura Wright
PUBLICATION DATE: March 3, 2015
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The New York Times bestselling author of the Cavanaugh Brothers novels returns to the Cavanaugh’s Texas Triple C ranch as the brothers confront the painful memories of their childhood and the truth about their sister’s murder…

No matter how many fights UFC champion Cole Cavanaugh wins, he can’t rid himself of the guilt of not having saved his twin sister’s life. Now, not only is he facing his arch enemy in the ring, he’s fighting to uncover the truth about Cass’s death. But will winning both fights truly give him the retribution and absolution he seeks? Or does he need the healing power of love to finally move on with his life?

The mystery surrounding Cass’s murder also haunts veterinarian Grace Hunter. Many believe that her father might hold the key to the truth. Unfortunately the ex-Sheriff’s deteriorating mental state makes it impossible to separate fact from fiction. As Cole persuades Grace to help him unlock the elusive clues, her defenses weaken. She finds the Stetson-wearing fighter irresistible. But while the truth could free Cole’s heart, it could very well end up shattering hers.

REVIEW:
Another good book in Ms. Wright’s Cavanaugh Brothers series. I have really liked Cole from the start and was so happy to read his book. He seems to be the one hurting and taking the blame the most in Cass’s murder. Cole puts on a front that he doesn’t care about anyone or anything (other than his sister and fightin. But in BRASH we get to see a new side to Cole. The side that shows he does care just a little bit. I have to say one of my favorite scenes is when Grace goes on a date with the Reverend and Cole’s reaction. Priceless 🙂 . In BRASH we learn more about what and who happened to Cass. I won’t give you more than that, because you know you need to read it and find out for yourself.
But this was a good story and I can’t wait to see what happens next with Blue’s story.

REVIEW:
This was my first book by Jennifer Ryan. At Wolf Ranch is the first book in her new Montana Men series. This was a good story. The beginning of this book is heartbreaking. But as the story goes on I learned that what you see is not always what you get. Ella is not the party girl that the world thinks she is. She is one tough cookie who is willing to do anything to find the truth. A truth that might just get her killed.
Gabe is dream in the way that all hunky yummy cowboys are. He is so amazing with Ella and the events that happen in this book.
Of course I don’t want to give anything away. But if you are looking for a new read and love cowboys, love suspense and love romance I would highly suggest you pick up a copy of At Wolf Ranch. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Kelly’s interview with Jennifer Ryan

Books-n-Kisses is please to welcome first time guest Jennifer Ryan….

Jennifer, can you please share with us a little about yourself?

I married my high school sweetheart nearly twenty-four years ago. We have three amazing kids. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. When I’m not writing, I’m spending time with my family and working in the garden. I hate doing laundry and am obsessed with all things chocolate.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

I’ve always been an avid reader. I get that from my mother. Believe it or not, I never thought about being a writer until I became a stay-at-home mom. All those books I read and loved turned into a passion for making up my own happy-ever-afters with some suspense thrown in. I was actually working full-time as a Cable Systems Designer when I sold my first book. I continued to work for more than a year after my first book came out. Five books later, I quit my job and am now living my dream as a full-time writer. I love it!

Can you share with us your typical writing day.  Is there anything you have to have while writing?

Ask my husband and he’ll tell you I am a creature of habit with one superpower, I can block out everything when I write – including my kids talking to me. They’re used to it, and I make it up to them with baked treats. I write 7 days a week. It almost always goes the same way – coffee or tea with cookies or chocolate, a movie from the DVR I’ve seen a hundred times (right now it’s Divergent), me on the couch with my laptop. I write anywhere from a couple of hours to all day some weekends, depending on how well it’s going. No matter what, I try to move the story forward each day.

Most challenging or rewarding part of writing?

Most challenging is naming all the characters. I swear, it’s like naming your child, but there’s a dozen people who show up on the page.

Most rewarding is seeing my books in print and fans contacting me to tell me how much they loved the story. It never gets old and every book that gets published makes me anxious and nervous in the best way.

Can you please tell us about your latest book?

AT WOLF RANCH is the first book in my new Montana Men series. Fans of The Hunted Series got a glimpse of my Montana Men in CAN’T WAIT when Caleb married Summer and Caleb’s brothers attended the wedding.

Gabe Bowden gave up the rodeo to move home and settle down on his own land. When Phillip Wolf offers to sell him Wolf Ranch at a too-good-to-be-true price, he doesn’t ask questions and takes the deal. He’ll finally have the ranch he’s always wanted, and maybe he’ll find a woman who shares his dream of a simple life on the ranch.

Ella Wolf is a New York socialite everyone thinks is nothing more than a party girl. They don’t know her. When her twin sister Lela is murdered by their uncle, Ella will do anything to discover the secrets her sister uncovered about their uncle.

The only clue Ella has leads her to their family ranch in Montana. Stranded on the side of the road in a snowstorm and about to freeze to death, she’s rescued by a handsome cowboy. Gabe vows to help her find the evidence and take down her uncle before he finds and kills her too.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

The idea for the Montana Men series came while I wrote Can’t Wait and Caleb’s brothers arrived for his wedding. Gabe, Blake, and Dane needed their own stories.

For AT WOLF RANCH, I wanted Gabe to fall for a woman who is all wrong for him, but really the right one. He was stood up at the altar by a woman who seemed like the perfect country girl. He loves Ella, but doesn’t think it will work because she’s a city girl. She’ll prove to him she’s a country girl at heart.

Can you share with us your current work in progress?

I am actually working on Book 5 – The Hunted Series. No title yet. Fans of the series have asked for Ben’s story, and I’m happy to give it to them. Ben appears in SAVED BY THE RANCHER. He’s a lawyer with a mission to help abused women escape their terrible circumstances. Right now, he’s trying to save Kate and her son from falling victim to a spoiled, entitled man who thinks his money can get him out of anything – including murder.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

Nora Roberts, Sandra Brown, Julie Garwood, and Tami Hoag are some of my favorite contemporary and suspense writers. Some of my favorite writer friends are Lia Riley, Marina Adair, Hannah Jayne, and Jules Barnard. Believe it or not, I’m a huge historical romance fan. I love Stephanie Laurens, Monica McCarty, Hannah Howell, and Lynsay Sands to name a few.

Do you feel that any of your favorite authors have inspired your writing style?

All of them in some way. Over time though, I’ve developed my own style and voice. I have a way of organizing my stories that works for me, like the opening scene is usually something that will blow you away – or at least I hope it does.

Open your book to a random page and please reads us a few lines.

“I’m staying. Don’t mind me.”

“A little privacy would be nice,” she shot back.

“I’ve already seen you half naked. Believe me, right now, all I’m interested in are your injuries.”

Right now. As in later might be a different story. Maybe that was wishful thinking, because this man did all kinds of weird things to her insides. She wanted him to stay. She wanted him to go. And, oh God, how stupid of her, she wanted him to wrap his arms around her again and tell her everything was going to be okay.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Due to my writing schedule, it’s hard to find time to read, but on top of my To Read pile is Elizabeth Lowell’s Running Scared.

I am very excited to see Gabe’s brother’s books come out. If you’re interested in Gabe, you’ll love his brothers Blake and Dane in WHEN IT’S RIGHT and HER LUCKY COWBOY.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I had a great time, Kelly. Thanks for inviting me to Books-n-Kisses today.

at wolf ranch

Everything’s bigger in Big Sky country, including the hearts of the Montana Men…After years on the rodeo circuit, Gabe Bowden wants nothing more than land of his own and a woman who will claim his heart for more than one night. When he has the chance to buy the enormous Wolf Ranch spread, he snaps up the incredible deal. Everything is set, until Gabe rescues a woman on the deserted, snowy road leading to the property, and the half-frozen beauty changes everything.

Ella Wolf rushes to her family’s abandoned Montana ranch after her twin sister is murdered. She knows she’s next . . . unless she can uncover a secret hidden somewhere at Wolf Ranch. The last thing Ella expects is to be rescued by a rugged rancher with his own agenda. A man who almost makes her forget how dangerous love can be.

As an unlikely partnership sparks into something so much more, and a killer closes in, can Ella and Gabe learn to trust one another before it’s too late?
