Twelve. Twelve of the deadliest beasts ever forged in the fires of hell have escaped onto our plane, and they want nothing more than to rip out the jugular of Charley Davidson and serve her lifeless, mangled body to Satan for dinner. So there’s that. But Charley has more on her plate than a mob of testy hellhounds. For one thing, her father has disappeared, and the more she retraces his last steps, the more she learns he was conducting an investigation of his own, one that has Charley questioning everything she’s ever known about him. Add to that an ex-BFF who is haunting her night and day, a rash of suicides that has authorities baffled, and a drop-dead sexy fiancé who has attracted the attentions of a local celebrity, and Charley is not having the best week of her life.

A tad north of hell, a hop, skip, and a jump past the realm of eternity, is a little place called Earth, and Charley Davidson, grim reaper extraordinaire, is determined to do everything in her power to protect it.

We’re doomed.

Excerpt:

As Cookie and Gemma planned my wedding, a job I did not envy in the least, I watched Reyes. I tried to single out his emotions, but there was so much blisteringly raw lust in the room, I couldn’t get past it all. Damn him and his sexual tractor beam.

A giggle floated toward me, and I saw the woman’s head tilt back again. Clearly, Reyes was slapping on the charm, but why? Was this about an interview? He’d been asked a dozen times for one and never gave any of the other reporters the time of day. Even 60 Minutes had wanted to do a story on him and got the door slammed in their face. But this woman came in, pinned him with a glittering smile, and he caved?

That was not like Reyes.

“I need a pretzel,” I said, ignoring my food.

The McCauley Brothers #3

Amazon BAM | B&N Chapters | Indiebound| iTunes Kobo

IT’S NOT EASY BEING RIGHT

Vanessa Campbell is a CPA by day and a perfectionist by night. She’s fit, successful…and decidedly lonely. She can’t stop thinking about the youngest McCauley brother, Cameron. He’s just like her: smart, attractive, and usually right—except when dealing with her.

…BUT SOMEONE’S GOT TO DO IT

Cameron McCauley likes Vanessa a little too much. She’s a blond goddess with a razor-sharp tongue. She hates to be wrong, just like him. But she can hold a grudge and is stubborn to a fault—also like him.

A past disagreement has them rubbing each other the wrong way. Cam is dying to shake Vanessa up—get her to let loose. But if he succeeds, can his heart handle it?

Caffeine addict, boy referee, and romance aficionado, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Marie Harte is a confessed bibliophile and devotee of action movies. Whether hiking in Central Oregon, biking around town, or hanging at the local tea shop, she’s constantly plotting to give everyone a  happily ever after. Visit www.marieharte.com and fall in love.

Excerpt:

“Colin,” Cam tried again. “You know dumping water on someone in the shower is a no-no. And especially Ubie’s new girlfriend.” Ubie—short for Uncle Brody. Brody Singer, the blond “adopted” McCauley who had grown up as part of the family

“But he told me to do it.”

Cam blinked. “He did? Well, you should never—”

“Dad thought it was kind of funny after he yelled at me.” Colin gave him a sharp nod, then added with a smirk, “Dad said he used to do that to you, and that you cried like a girrrl.” Considering Colin’s anti-girl phase, that was a high insult.

“Is that right?” Cam frowned, remembering being the butt of too many jokes while growing up. “Mike has no idea what he’s dealing with. You think your dad’s tough? Watch Uncle Cam.” Knowing he shouldn’t encourage the mischief in his nephew’s eyes but unable to stop himself from the unspoken dare, Cam hurried to the kitchen, found a large glass and filled it with ice-cold water. Considering the freezing January wind outside, Mike would be basking in a hot shower to warm up. Cam grinned, looking forward to his brother’s howl of misery.

Colin trailed him like a puppy. “Oh wow, Uncle Cam. Are you going to get Dad?” He clapped.

“Shh.”

“Oh, sorry.” Colin’s big grin showed a missing front tooth.

Cam walked down more ugly brown carpet that looked as it if had been vacuumed to death—Mike and his obsession with cleanliness—and tiptoed into the big guy’s room. He made sure he had a clear exit. If his goliath big brother caught him, he’d be toast. Fortunately, he could move like a gazelle.

Gliding into the master bathroom, he readied himself. One, two…three. He yanked open the curtain and tossed the cold water at…Vanessa Campbell?

He stared in shock at the sexiest woman he’d seen in a long, long time. Naked, her creamy skin glistened with water as she gaped at him in horror. Which quickly turned to anger.

“Cameron McCauley!”

“Oh, wow.” He couldn’t look away

Kelly’s Review:

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4 1/2

Awe, Marie does it again.  I think Cameron & Vanessa are my favorite so far.  I just love how they are so much a like yet different.  That Cameron knows how to push Vanessa’s buttons and how she fights back.  I loved how even when they fight they don’t really fight.   Unless of course Vanessa is wrong then the fight is to the death. These two are just great.

And the side story with Pop & Bitsy is great too.  And I loved the introduction to Mike & Del’s book.  hehehe….. This one is going to be a fun ride, can’t wait to read.

If you have not started this series you should really think about it.  These McCauley boys are hot and know what they are doing.  Well most of the time 🙂  And if I were you I would start at the beginning (you don’t have to but I would)

MH3-cropped200 (1)A little about Marie:

I’ve been writing as far back as I can remember. Interest in the written word, no doubt spawned by my English teacher father, continues to this day. I’m a voracious reader, gobbling everything from romance to horror to fantasy and more. I’m in love with the art of putting pen to paper…so to speak.

I majored in English from Penn State University, earning a B.A. in Liberal Arts, as well as a commission in the United States Marine Corps. Five years later, after serving as a communications officer, I left the service to focus more on family. After going through an assortment of jobs–the Marine Corps Reserve, an IT representative, a middle manager for a Fortune 500 transportation company–I stopped working to raise two new additions to the family–my youngest sons. During this period, I decided to stop dreaming and start seriously writing.

In December of 2004 my first story was published, and I haven’t looked back since.  I currently have over a hundred titles (yeah, shocked me too!) with Carina, Ellora’s Cave, Fated Desires, Loose Id, Samhain, Sourcebooks, and Totally Bound.

I’ve received several awards to include: the 2005 Passionate Plume for Scifi/fantasy romance, the 2006 Amber Quill Heat Wave contest winner, 1st Place in Steamy Erotic romance for the 2006 Lories, finalist in the 2007 Linda Howard Award of Excellence, finalist in the 2008 Reveal Your Inner Vixen MRWA contest, and finalist in the 2012 Reveal Your Inner Vixen MRWA contest.

Book Spotlight & Review: Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth

BitterGreens

French novelist Charlotte-Rose de la Force has been banished from the court of Versailles by the Sun King, Louis XIV, after a series of scandalous love affairs. At the convent, she is comforted by an old nun, Sœur Seraphina, who tells her the tale of a young girl who, a hundred years earlier, is sold by her parents for a handful of bitter greens…

After Margherita’s father steals parsley from the walled garden of the courtesan Selena Leonelli, he is threatened with having both hands cut off, unless he and his wife relinquish their precious little girl. Selena is the famous red-haired muse of the artist Tiziano, first painted by him in 1512 and still inspiring him at the time of his death. She is at the center of Renaissance life in Venice, a world of beauty and danger, seduction and betrayal, love and superstition.

Locked away in a tower, Margherita sings in the hope that someone will hear her. One day, a young man does.

Award-winning author Kate Forsyth braids together the stories of Margherita, Selena, and Charlotte-Rose, the woman who penned Rapunzel as we now know it, to create what is a sumptuous historical novel, an enchanting fairy tale retelling, and a loving tribute to the imagination of one remarkable woman.

EXCERPT

A Heart of Gall
Château de Cazeneuve, Gascony, France – June 1666
I had always been a great talker and teller of tales.

‘You should put a lock on that tongue of yours. It’s long enough and sharp enough to slit your own throat,’ our guardian warned me, the night before I left home to go to the royal court at Versailles. He sat at the head of the long wooden table in the chateau’s arched dining room, lifting his lip in distaste as the servants brought us our usual peasant fare of sausage and white-bean cassoulet. He had not accustomed himself to our simple Gascon ways, not even after six years.

I just laughed. ‘Don’t you know a woman’s tongue is her sword? You wouldn’t want me to let my only weapon rust, would you?’

‘No chance of that.’ The Marquis de Maulévrier was a humourless man, with a face like a goat and yellowish eyes that followed my sister and me as we went about our business. He thought our mother had spoilt us, and had set himself to remedy our faults. I loathed him. No, loathe is far too soft a word. I detested him.

My sister, Marie, said, ‘Please, my lord, you mustn’t mind her. You know we’re famous here in Gascony for our troubadours and minstrels. We Gascons love to sing songs and tell stories. She means no harm by it.’

‘I love to tell a gasconade,’ I sang. ‘A braggadocio, a fanfaronade . . .’

Marie sent me a look. ‘You know that Charlotte-Rose will need honey on her tongue if she’s to make her way in this world.’

‘Sangdieu, but it’s true. Her face won’t make her fortune.’

‘That’s unfair, my lord. Charlotte-Rose has the sweetest face . . .’

‘She might be passable if only she’d pluck out that sting in her tail,’ the Marquis de Maulévrier began. Seeing that I had screwed up my face like a gargoyle, waggling my tongue at him, he rapped his spoon on the pitted tabletop. ‘You’d best sweeten your temperament, mademoiselle, else you’ll find yourself with a heart of gall.’

I should have listened to him.

Jennifer’s Review of Bitter Greens

Review (4 Stars): One of the things that I loved about Bitter Greens was that it immediately sweeps you away with its richly descriptive story and I felt as though I was experiencing the same things as the main character, Charlotte-Rose de la Force.  We find in the beginning of this story that Charlotte-Rose has been banished to a convent by the King Louis XIV for her scandalous behavior and must remain there until she agrees to take her vows or the King calls her back to his court.  While there, Charlotte-Rose reflects back on her life and is comforted by Sœur Seraphina, who tells Charlotte-Rose an amazing story about another young woman whose situation rivals her own. Bitter Greens is a haunting story that involves a very different and darker take on the beloved tale of Rapunzel through the eyes of three very intriguing women.  I love historical fiction and I was impressed by Ms. Forsyth’s tale of three courageous women that are bound by society and situations that are completely out of their control.  I enjoyed getting to know each of these characters and their journey captivated me until the very last page.

Jennifer’s Review of Once Perfect

Review (4.25 Stars): Mateo is one of the sexiest heroes that I have seen in a while.  Not only is he a MMA fighter (which to me is very hot) but such a strong caring guy to the women in his life.  He is definitely an alpha male but has learned to be the support system that Evie needed through this difficult time.  He was attracted to her from the very beginning, when she first started working at Excess and never even knew that Mateo had worked there as a bouncer.  He did everything he could to protect her and introduced her to a world that she never even knew existed.

Evie was a very sweet character that was struggling her way through nursing school after the loss of her father to a family scandal.  She worked as a waitress at Excess on the weekends and was always aware of the strong silent Mateo, whose eyes seemed to follow her wherever she went.  Mateo was able to help Evie through a panic attack one night and as a result, they develop feelings for one another that can’t be denied.  During the course of their relationship, Evie discovers that she has been suppressing the events of the night of her father’s death and when those secrets finally come to light, Mateo is there to support Evie when her once perfect world starts to fall apart.

Once Perfect is a great romance with a very difficult subject matter that Ms. Robson handles with the utmost compassion and grace.  Evie needed Mateo in her life to help her face her past and help her heal from her emotional and physical trauma.  Mateo was also dealing with a difficult situation himself in his own family and I was impressed that these characters were able to hold things together with everything they were facing.  Love conquers all and I couldn’t imagine two people more perfect for each other to build a real loving relationship that they deserved to experience. I love everything that Ms. Robson writes and Once Perfect is a emotional story about two troubled hearts that are able to heal with love that I know will stick with me for quite a while.

Excerpt – IT’S IN HIS KISS by Jill Shalvis

“I see you sometimes in the mornings,” she said. “And you do. You always run that hard.”

He smiled. “Peeper to the bone.”

“Can’t seem to help myself,” she admitted.

He dropped to the sand beside her and didn’t miss the fact that she stiffened up at his quick motion. To give her a minute, he stretched out his tired legs. “I worked at sea for seven years. I missed running. I promised myself when I got off the rig, I’d get back to it.”

She took her gaze off his body to look into his eyes. “What was the job?

“I worked for a consulting firm monitoring the deep drilling rigs. We’d go out for months at a time, no land in sight.”

“We?”

“I had a crew,” he said.

“You were out at sea with a bunch of guys for months at a time?”

“There were a few women too,” he said. Three, to be exact, one of whom had neatly sliced Cole’s heart in two.

“What was your job out there?” Becca asked.

“OIM. Offshore installation manager.” He shrugged again. “Basically just a fancy title for babysitting the operation.”

“All of it?”

“I handled the business side of things,” he said, “the shifts, the tasks, everything.”

“Sam knows everything,” she said softly. “That’s what people keep telling me.”

He didn’t know everything. He didn’t know, for example, why he was so drawn to her. Or what made her so wary.

“Must have been a tough job,” she said.

“The job was hard as hell,” he agreed. He had few good memories of those years, working his way up from grunt worker to manager. After they’d lost Gil, he and Tanner had come back to Lucky Harbor with Cole, who’d wanted to be here to take care of his mom and three sisters. Tanner had needed recovery time. And it’d been as good a place as any to start their charter company.

“So you retired from the rigs and now you run, surf, take people out on charters, and handcraft boats,” she said.

He slid her a look.

“Peeper, remember?” she said. She bit her lip but a sweet, low laugh escaped. “Plus, I looked you up.”

Now it was his turn to narrow his eyes. “Why?”

She squirmed a little, which he found fascinating. Actually he found her fascinating. “I’ve spent the past three mornings at the diner for the free WiFi,” she said. “I’ve been…researching.”

“Me?”

“Not just you. But I was curious,” she admitted.

“Yeah? You didn’t get enough information from watching me out the window?”

“Hey,” she said on another laugh. “I can’t help it that you’re pretty to look at.”

At this, he went brows-up. “You said attractive. You didn’t say pretty.”

“Pretty,” she repeated, still smiling.

He loved her smile. “I’m not pretty.” But he was smiling now, too.

“Okay,” she said. “You’re right. Pretty is far too girlie a word for what you are.”

They looked at each other. The air seemed to get all used up then, and his heart beat in tune to the pulsing waves. “What else did you learn about me, in your…research?” he asked softly.

Her gaze dropped to his mouth. “That you guys take people deep-sea fishing, scuba diving, that sort of thing. Also, your charter company’s got four and a half stars on Yelp—although I’m pretty sure some of those reviews were written by women who want to date you because there’s lots of mentions of the three hot guys who run the company.”

He winced, making her laugh again.

“Might as well own it,” she said. “Also, did you know that the town of Lucky Harbor has a Pinterest account? The woman who updates it has a board there for her favorite things.”

“Lucille,” he muttered.

“And one of her favorite things,” Becca said, “is you.”

He grimaced. “Lucille’s a nut.”

“She seems very sincere.”

“Okay, so she’s a nice nut,” he said. “A nut’s a nut.”

“People around here seem to look to you as a leader, as someone to turn to,” she said. “If there’s a question, people say Sam’ll know, but I’ve noticed something.” She waited until he met her gaze. “No one seems to really know you except for maybe Cole and Tanner.”

That was just close enough to the dead truth to make him uncomfortable.

“I think it’s because you come off as a lone wolf,” she said, head cocked as she studied him. “And then there’s your approach-at-your-own-risk vibe.”

Hard to deny the truth, so he didn’t bother.

“I mean you’re really good on the fly,” she said quietly, as if talking to herself, trying to figure him out. “And you’re good at helping people, but you’re not readily available to get to know.”

It was a shockingly accurate insight, but he went with humor. “Not seeing the problem,” he said.

“Well, it’s interesting, is all.”

“Interesting?”

“Yeah.” Again she looked at his mouth. “Because your distance is perversely making me curious to know more. And I haven’t been…curious in a long time.”

Jennifer’s Review of The Beautiful Ashes

Review (4 Stars): I have always been a big fan of Ms. Frost’s work and I was very excited to read her new book, The Beautiful Ashes, which is the first title in a brand new series.  Ivy is on the search for her sister, Jasmine, who has been missing for days and seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth.  No one has seen her and Ivy is dealing with her disappearance as well as the death of her foster parents, who were recently killed in a car accident.  Ivy has always been a little different, plagued by dreams and visions of horrible things that no one has been able to explain. She soon finds that people are trying to kill her to prevent her from finding her sister and finds an unlikely ally in a young man named Adrian.  Adrian may be the only person she can count on in this deadly fight but he may also be the one person that is meant to betray her. She is running out of time to save her sister and she needs to find a historic weapon before it is too late to save them all.

I liked Ivy from the very beginning, she was a strong, independent young woman who was trying to hold it together after the loss of her parents and the disappearance of her younger sister.  Ivy has always been plagued by horrifying visions of things that no one else could see but her.  During the search for her sister, Ivy can’t find anyone that has seen her and the people that she meets look fine one second, then something out of a horror movie the next.  She soon meets up with Adrian, a young man with secrets of his own, where she finds that her visions are real and she is the last descendant of a distinctive bloodline.  She has supernatural powers that she has never known about and to save her sister, she must help Adrian find a historic weapon that only she can locate.  She also discovers that Adrian is the descendant of another infamous bloodline and it is has been prophesied for him to betray her.  She has this love/hate relationship with Adrian through most of the book which dragged on a little but I enjoyed them both together.  He was the first person to believe in her and tell her that everything she had been going through was real.

Adrian was definitely a charmer but he was also a bad boy with a tainted past. He was always there by Ivy’s side through everything but sometimes his attitude made me want to reach in and smack him.  He was destined to betray Ivy but couldn’t stay away from her no matter what happened.  I liked that he tried to redeem himself from the past things that he had done and I’m interested to see how things play out for them in the rest of the series.

I liked The Beautiful Ashes and I think that is a promising start to a new series.  It was action-packed from the beginning with a touch of romance to even things out. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series to see if the prophecy between Ivy and Adrian actually comes to light or they are able to change their own fates.

Book Spotlight & Review: Fatal Fortune by Victoria Laurie

317_Fatal_Fortune

When police show Abby surveillance video of her best friend and business partner, Candice Fusco, shooting a man in cold blood, she can’t believe her eyes. And when the cops tell her they think the victim has ties to the Mob—and perhaps Candice does too—she can’t believe her ears. Surely there is a logical explanation. But Candice is nowhere to be found.
Abby decides the only way to find out the truth is to go to Vegas herself—which may be the biggest gamble of her life. Once in town she begins to uncover a rigged game of dirty double-dealing where the stakes are no less than life and death. And if she’s not careful, Abby can forget about ever leaving Las Vegas…alive.

About the Author:
victorialaurie
Victoria Laurie is the New York Times bestselling author of over twenty books.  With two series in full swing, Victoria divides her time between The Psychic Eye Mysteries and The Ghost Hunter Mysteries.  As a professional psychic herself, Victoria knows all too well the tricky world of the paranormal in which her protagonists psychic Abby Cooper, and spiritual medium M. J. Holliday tackle murder, mayhem, and the occasional demon with plenty of plucky humor and determination.

Jennifer’s Review of Fatal Fortune
Review (5 Stars): I absolutely loved this book from beginning to end and Abby is such an amazing character that I always look forward to spending time with her.  In this book, Abby gets a phone call in the middle of the night from her best friend, Candice, saying “you have to trust me. It’s not how it looks.” From that point on, this story is a race against time for Abby to find out the truth when she discovers that Candice is seen on video surveillance footage shooting a man in cold blood in an airport parking lot.

There were so many clever plot twists and turns that will have you second guessing to who the killer is and why the victim was killed.  Most of us have known and loved Candice from the very beginning and finding out that she could be a cold blooded killer shakes us to the core that someone we knew and trusted could have deceived us for so long.  I understood Abby’s situation that her beloved friend was implicated in a murder and her having doubts that the person she loved like a sister could be capable of this kind of violence.

I loved watching Abby’s and Dutch’s relationship in Fatal Fortune as they settle down in their life as a married couple.  As Abby was dealing with the stress of the investigation and subsequent manhunt for her friend, it was nice to see that having Dutch in her life helped her find that balance she needed. They have come so far in their relationship from the beginning of the series and you can see that their relationship just gets stronger and more loving as time goes on.

Fatal Fortune was a cleverly written mystery that will have you on the edge of your seat. Victoria Laurie is such a talented writer that has created such a delightful series that gets better with each novel that she writes.  If you haven’t read any of her books, you should start with Abby Cooper: Psychic Eye to start from the beginning because this is one series that you should enjoy every moment of.

The unforgettable saga of a young man coming of age within a remarkable family, and a shimmering portrait of the world that shaped him, The City is a novel that speaks to everyone, a dazzling realization of the evergreen dreams we all share. Brilliantly illumined by magic dark and light, it’s a place where enchantment and malice entwine, courage and honor are found in the most unexpected quarters, and the way forward lies buried deep inside the heart.

About the Author:

dean_photo_8When he was a senior in college, Dean Koontz won an Atlantic Monthly fiction competition and has been writing ever since. His books are published in 38 languages and he has sold over 450 million copies to date.

Fourteen of his novels have risen to number one on the New York Times hardcover bestseller list (One Door Away From Heaven, From the Corner of His Eye, Midnight, Cold Fire, The Bad Place, Hideaway, Dragon Tears, Intensity, Sole Survivor, The HusbandOdd Hours, Relentless, What the Night Knows, and 77 Shadow Street), making him one of only a dozen writers ever to have achieved that milestone. Sixteen of his books have risen to the number one position in paperback. His books have also been major bestsellers in countries as diverse as Japan and Sweden.

The New York Times has called his writing “psychologically complex, masterly and satisfying.” The New Orleans Times-Picayune said Koontz is, “at times lyrical without ever being naive or romantic. [He creates] a grotesque world, much like that of Flannery O’Conner or Walker Percy … scary, worthwhile reading.” Rolling Stone has hailed him as “America’s most popular suspense novelist.”

Dean Koontz was born and raised in Pennsylvania. He graduated from Shippensburg State College (now Shippensburg University), and his first job after graduation was with the Appalachian Poverty Program, where he was expected to counsel and tutor underprivileged children on a one-to-one basis. His first day on the job, he discovered that the previous occupier of his position had been beaten up by the very kids he had been trying to help and had landed in the hospital for several weeks. The following year was filled with challenge but also tension, and Koontz was more highly motivated than ever to build a career as a writer. He wrote nights and weekends, which he continued to do after leaving the poverty program and going to work as an English teacher in a suburban school district outside Harrisburg. After a year and a half in that position, his wife, Gerda, made him an offer he couldn’t refuse: “I’ll support you for five years,” she said, “and if you can’t make it as a writer in that time, you’ll never make it.” By the end of those five years, Gerda had quit her job to run the business end of her husband’s writing career.

Dean Koontz lives in Southern California with his wife, Gerda, their golden retriever, Anna, and the enduring spirit of their golden, Trixie.

Jennifer’s Review of The City

Review (4 Stars): I consider Dean Koontz to be one of my literary idols and some of my favorite books of all time have been written by this talented writer.  In The City, Mr. Koontz steers away from his usual style of writing and presents us with the coming of age story of Jonah Kirk, a young man born into a musically inclined family in the 1960’s.  Jonah is on his own most of the time because his mother works two jobs to make ends meet and The City chronicles his experiences growing up, which eventually leads him to become involved in conspiracy and murder.

The great thing about The City was Mr. Koontz’s ability to write great characters that you instantly become involved with and add so much to the story.  I liked Jonah and enjoyed following his life journey even when he started experiencing terrifying dreams that eventually came true.  Watching Jonah deal with the aftermath of seeing these visions come to life intrigued me and kept me wondering how his story would end.  I will have to say that some parts of The City dragged at times but quickly picked up toward the end of the book. The City was an engaging character driven coming of age story that makes us evaluate the events that ultimately shape our lives.  Dean Koontz is a master and even though this book isn’t his typical fare, it will be enjoyable and powerful nonetheless.

Book Spotlight & Giveaway: Scene of the Climb by Kate Dyer-Seeley

sceneclimb2

I’m excited to have Kate Dyer-Seeley here today to talk about her new book, Scene of the Climb.  The book takes place in the Pacific Northwest and I loved reading all the places that Meg visited because I’m quite familiar with them myself.  🙂

1. Tell me about your new release.

SCENE OF THE CLIMB is set in the ruggedly beautiful Pacific Northwest and features Meg Reed, a young journalist who bills herself as an intrepid adventure in order to land a gig writing for Northwest Extreme Magazine.  In reality, she’s a total klutz and terrified of heights.  The magazine sends her out to Angel’s Rest trail (a steep climb up to a breathtaking view of the Columbia River) to cover an adventure race filming on location.  Meg prefers vintage fashion and artisan coffee to scaling cliffs, but she’s desperate for a job and to prove herself.  So she laces up her kicks and hits the trail.  Once she finally huffs her way to the top, she sees a body sail off the summit and from there things just get worse.

2. Where did you come up with the idea for this story?

One of my all-time favorite holiday movies is Christmas in Connecticut. I have clarify that I mean the original with Barbara Stanwyck, not the 1992 remake with Kris Kristofferson.  The premise of the movie is that Elizabeth Lane is a food writer for a major magazine in the 1940s, with a country home in Connecticut and a family.  Of course she has none of these things–she can’t cook, lives in a small apartment and is single.  I love the idea of trying to be something you’re not, and how quickly things can unravel when you’re not being authentic.  I think we’ve all had experiences like that, and it provides a great opportunity to watch Meg grow in the series.

I live in the Pacific Northwest and do a lot of hiking with my family.  Angel’s Rest is one of my favorite hikes.  It’s a relatively easy climb and the payoff at the top is truly stunning.  However it seems like every year someone falls up there.  I guess it’s sort of a case of life imitating art.  I spent a semester in college on an eco-tourism trip in New Zealand and Australia which I used as inspiration for the storyline too.

3. What was the most interesting thing that you had to research as a writer?

I feel like writing this was kind of like cheating because most of my “research” entailed me going out to hike the trails featured in the book.  My dad, who’s a retired English teacher, was my hiking partner on many of the climbs and a great sounding board for plotting and structure.  I interviewed the Crag Rats, who are the first-ever mountain rescue team in the United States. It was really interesting to learn about the kind of work they do.  They’re all volunteers who literally put their lives at risk to rescue others.  Very impressive.

4. Which authors do you feel have influenced you to become a writer?

How much time do you have? I was so lucky to have parents who were readers and ignited that passion for me at an early age.  As a kid, I loved Maud Lovelace, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, Willa Cather. In terms of cozies, Jacqueline Winspear, Rhys Bowen, Cleo Coyle, Michelle Scott, Louise Penny.  I could keep going…

5. What are you working on now?
I just finished the second book in the series which is set up at Timberline Lodge during opening weekend of the ski season.  I had so much fun researching Timberline’s rich history, getting up to speed on snowboarding lingo and thinking about putting Meg out in the cold.  I’m getting ready to start work on book three which will take Meg out to Hood River, Oregon for a windsurfing competition.  Poor Meg.  She can’t catch a break.

6. Favorite TV guilty pleasure?  Favorite Food? Favorite book that you’ve read recently?

Great question. I love Castle.  I mean, Nathan Fillion–he’s such a dream.  I could watch him all day.  Food…hmm. I love anything with cilantro.  It’s so versatile–Thai, Mexican.  I’m itching to plant a new vegetable and herb garden.  It’s the best when you can pop out to the backyard to pick dinner.  In terms of books, I read pretty much everything I can get my hands on.  When I’m working on a new manuscript it’s hard to read the genre, which is a bummer because I LOVE cozies.  Beautiful Ruins is probably my top pick.  I read it a little while ago, but it’s one of those books that has stayed with me.

Jennifer’s Review of Scene of the Climb

Review (4.5. Stars): I was so excited to have the opportunity to read this book because it takes place in the Pacific Northwest which I’m quite familiar with since I live here in Portland.  Meg Reed is down on her luck, living on her best friend’s couch, trying to find any job that will utilize her Journalism degree.  A chance meeting with the editor-in-chief of Northwest Extreme gives Meg the opportunity that she has been hoping for.  An actual job that will pay her to write for a magazine but the kicker is that Meg must be an outdoor enthusiast and Meg is the exact opposite.  On her first exclusive assignment, Meg finds herself climbing cliffs to cover the final leg of the popular reality show, Race the States. What she doesn’t expect is to witness a contestant flying over the side of the cliff to their death and now she has to investigate a murder before the killer claims another victim.

I really enjoyed Scene of the Climb and I was amazed at how quickly I got involved with the story.  Meg was a great character and I enjoyed following her through the course of this book.  I think that we’ve all done something to help us get a job when we are just starting out and there were times that I was laughing out loud by some of the things that she did.  Scene of the Climb was a delightful start to what will be a great mystery series. I loved having the Pacific Northwest as the backdrop to the novel and I knew exactly where each location was that Meg was visiting as part of her new job.  I’m looking forward to reading more from Ms. Dyer-Seeley and reading the next book in the series.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: A Sense of Entitlement by Anna Loan-Wilsey

a sense of entitlement large banner448

Romance Newport Style

When I saw that one of the stops on my blog tour for A  Sense of Entitlement, book three in my Hattie Davish Mystery series from Kensington Publishing was Books-n-Kisses (Thank you for hosting!), the first idea for my guest post that popped into my head was of course romance!  I could tell the story of Miss Hattie Davish and Dr. Walter Grice.  I could give details about how the two met in Eureka Springs, AR in book one in the series and how Hattie at first resists Walter’s charms.  As a practical woman, Hattie knows it is uncommon and unlikely for a woman with no family, who must work to support herself, to be loved by a rich, gentleman doctor who does what he loves, not what he has to.  And of course, there is also Hattie’s severe phobia of doctors to consider.  But luckily Walter is used to getting what he wants, doesn’t take no for an answer and is smitten enough to pursue Hattie until she realizes he is worth the risk of a heartbreak.

But then the idea I had of writing about romance took a dark turn as I remembered what I had uncovered during my research for A Sense of Entitlement. For just as Hattie is getting comfortable with the idea of an orphaned hat maker’s daughter having a rich beau in her life, she goes to Newport, RI, where the gap between the social classes is too wide to navigate and heartbreak is pervasive.  While tackling her new responsibilities as social secretary to the wealthiest woman in America and tracking down the killer of an eminent banker, Hattie must face challenges of the heart as well. But Hattie is not exceptional.  Even for its historical residents, spending “the Season” in Newport was not for the faint or fair of heart.

I discovered adultery was, as Deborah Davis says in her book, Gilded: How Newport Became America’s Richest Resort, “so widespread in Newport circles that there was a sliding scale of misbehavior.”  As long as it wasn’t serious or threatened the status quo, it was tolerated.  However, there were some affairs that made headlines.  When Alva Vanderbilt announced her intention to divorce her husband William K. Vanderbilt, on the basis of adultery, she shocked all of Newport society.  Yet his infidelities were know to all to have occurred throughout the marriage.  But when a rumor surfaced that Oliver Belmont had been found hiding in Alva’s bedroom, it sparked public ridicule and threatened her position in society.

But Newport society could have an even uglier side when it came to romance.  In an era where rich American’s sought legitimacy through European nobility titles, daughters of Newport’s richest families where vulnerable to marriages that were more business transactions than love matches.  Again the examples that comes right to mind involves Alva Vanderbilt, who after her scandalous divorce would do anything to secure her place in society.  She decided that her teenage daughter, Consuelo, would marry Edwin William Spencer-Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough.  She didn’t give any thought to the fact that Consuelo was already very much in love with someone else, Winthrop Rutherford, a rich, handsome lawyer from an exceptionally good family.  Most mothers would be thrilled to have the descendant of the first governor of Massachusetts as a son-in-law but not Alva.  When Alva discovered the couple’s plan to elope, Alva literally imprisoned Consuelo in her room which was guarded twenty-four hours a day.  When Consuelo still refused to marry the Duke, Alva threatened to murder Winthrop Rutherford.  When that threat didn’t work, Alva feigned a mortal illness and begged Consuelo to grant her dying wish.  Of course the daughter conceded and married Spencer-Churchill, though she was heard to be sobbing beneath her veil throughout the ceremony, which a miraculously recovered Alva Vanderbilt attended.

To be fair, not all Newport society romances end in heartbreak.  Again using Alva Vanderbilt as an example, she ultimately married Oliver Belmont, the man found hiding in her closet years before, for love and not position, power or money, and lived with him happily, quietly and without controversy until his death.  And she eventually made peace with her daughter who divorced the Duke and married again for love.  So if Alva Vanderbilt could find peace and love in Newport, I have high hopes for Hattie.

Jennifer’s Review of A Sense of Entitlement

Review (4.25 Stars): This is the first book that I’ve read in the Hattie Davis series and I’m happy to say that I was captivated by the engaging characters of this mystery series. Hattie is sent to work as the social secretary for the wealthiest woman in America while she is on hiatus from Sir Arthur while he is out of town on business.  She quickly finds herself embroiled in a mystery when she discovers the body of a wealthy banker and has to investigate to save an innocent man from being blamed for the crime.

I really liked A Sense of Entitlement and the character of Hattie Davis.  She was very smart, articulate, and resourceful in a time where women were judged mainly by their social status.  I was amazed at how Hattie could live in this time period where she was treated so horribly by people because she was a secretary and still be gracious through it all.  I enjoyed the murder mystery in A Sense of Entitlement and will be getting the first two in the series this weekend to further acquaint myself with the delightful Hattie Davis.
