Blurb:  Felix Grady’s world came crashing down around him when he received confirmation his twin brother was torturing women. One of the victims was none other than his destined mate. Torn between his twin and protecting his mate and clan, Felix must make the ultimate choice between the two.

Harmony Kirk suffered for years under her former Alpha and Henry. Now in Alaska under the protection of the Alaskan Tigers, she’s expected to forget everything that happened and commit herself to the clan. Destined to be the mate of one of the top members of the clan doesn’t make things any easier. It doesn’t help that the destined mate is the identical twin to the man who spent years abusing her.

Will eliminating Henry make things easier or harder for Harmony? Can she move past Felix’s face and see him as a different man than the one who abused her for years? Will it free her from the past she’s locked herself into, allowing her to be with the man who is her destiny?

Chapter One

The sun glared down from high above when Felix Grady finally stepped out of his cabin. The day off was just what he needed. The long hours he put in while his partner Adam was off mating had worn him out. He slept late and had a leisurely lunch, but now he was tired of doing nothing. He was a tiger that enjoyed being on the move, not lounging around like a bag of lazy bones.

Taking a stroll around the compound would clear his mind before checking in with Ty and Tabitha. He knew Tabitha was in good hands with Adam, but his duties were so engrained in him that he couldn’t stop, even for a few hours. It just wasn’t the person he was.

Making a circle around the grounds, he checked to be sure all the guards were at their posts, nothing out of the norm. As a last-second change of plan, he turned, deciding to take a detour around the creek. Everyone seemed to love the little area by the creek. There was a little bank where shifters could relax, especially Kallie’s mates Taber and Thorben who were able to fish in their bear form without anyone spotting them.

He loved the compound, and the cold weather of Alaska didn’t bother him, although he didn’t have nearly enough time to enjoy it. Being the Captain of Tabitha’s guards takes priority, and with the constant threats to the clans, he rarely had any downtime to enjoy the compound as the other shifters did.

Raja stepped out from around a cabin. “I thought you were taking a day to relax? Checking the grounds at your normal time doesn’t break from your routine. You should catch up on much deserved sleep.”

Since Raja found his mate, Bethany, he had been more jubilant and full of life. The meaning of life had come back to him in full force. It was a remarkable change from the strict man that he’d been before. Now he lived for more than just his job, he had a mate that he loved. Even his sister Tora had remarked on the change.

“Can’t keep me out of the action for long.” He chuckled. “My tiger was restless and demanded I get back to some resemblance of my routine. Any updates?”

“Not yet. Connor and Lukas are working on finding Henry and Randolph, but no solid leads. Recently they found out Randolph spent years being Pierce’s second, but he’s awfully quiet so far for the death of his leader. Speaking of it, have you seen Harmony on your walk? I stopped by her studio, and she wasn’t there.” Raja came to stand next to Felix looking out over the creek bubbling its way down the path.

“No. I heard the guards have been taken off her door after she complained. Is that the wisest move?” There was something about Harmony that drove him to her. She was so scared and frightened, yet he could sense something hiding under the surface, drawing him to her. Maybe it was the person she used to be before his twin brother ruined the shine she had.

“You heard the stink she put up—did you want to listen to that long-term?” Raja shook his head. “Plus, we don’t know when Henry might actually make his move, and we can’t keep her under lock and key indefinitely. Robin will feel if she’s in any danger, and we’re counting on warning from you before he arrives.”

“I’ll do what I can.” Being Henry’s twin should have made it easier for him to determine Henry’s next move, but he was almost as blind to it as everyone else. Harmony might be their only early warning when it came to Henry’s final move.

Raja patted Felix on the back. “I better get back to Bethany. It’s our night for the family dinner. Enjoy the rest of your night off.”

Felix nodded, with a slight envy eating at him. His Lieutenant had a family that most of the clan was envious of. Most tiger shifter off-springs ended up leaving their home clan when they grew up to search for another one to make their name in, separating families across the country. Most shifters don’t have a loyalty to a family like humans do. The loyalty was only to their mate and clan. Parents and siblings were a different category altogether for shifters. Siblings normally remained close though the distances, but parents seemed to have more distances. It’s believed to come from their beast since that was how they were in the wild.

Raja and Tora had been close all their lives, and Tora mating did little to separate the siblings. What separation might have happened was closed with the birth of Tora and Marcus’ daughter Scarlet. Since mating with Bethany, the family dinners have been rotated between Tora’s cabin and Raja’s, giving each woman a chance to host.

With family and mating on his mind, he decided to extend his walk down the creek bed before going back to check on Tabitha. The lush trees lined the creek, keeping it hidden even from the cabins. It was a safe and secure spot deep within the compound, one you were never sure who you would find there.

A familiar scent of honeysuckle and toasted vanilla teased him further along the path to one of the hiding spaces that Kallie favored when she first came to the clan. There, hidden amongst the trees, Harmony sat with her back pressed against the base of one of the trees, tossing rocks at the creek.

“Harmony.” He called to her before stepping closer because he didn’t want to scare her. He knew that just the sight of him made her tense, serving as a reminder of the man that forced himself on her. It was still hard for him to believe that his twin had done such an unimaginable thing. They were raised better than that, and having the tiger inside him but being unable to shift was not enough of an excuse for Felix to forgive Henry’s behavior.

She slid her legs up tight against her chest and met his gaze, but she didn’t speak. She watched him like a tiger stalking its prey, but she wasn’t strong enough to take him down. In tiger form, he outweighed her by more than a hundred pounds, but even as a human, she was no match for him. His years of training and hours in the gym meant he could take her down without hurting her and without much effort at all.

“You okay?” He stepped closer, keeping in her line of sight and his hand way from the gun in his shoulder holster.

“I can’t take it any longer.” She leaned her head against the tree and looked at him. “I can’t stand the fear, the panic. Damn it, to be a prisoner, it’s like being with him all over again. I keep waiting for him to find me, to make me pay for running.”

“You’re safe here. He’s not going to get to you. I won’t let him. Do you understand that?” He knelt in front of her, just far enough away that they didn’t touch, still respecting her space.

“You can’t be sure of that. There’s so many threats against your clan now, with the Texas clan and the rogues.” Her jaw was set as she stared at him. He could read it in her body language that she didn’t believe him.

“I told you I’ll protect you, and I will. There are always threats to clans, but that doesn’t change my vow to protect you.” He paused, listening to the quietness, when an idea struck him. “I know you’re feeling boxed in, so how about if we take a drive? There’s no need to go into town or anything, but a drive through the area might help you recharge and get outside of the compound for a bit. What do you say?”

“I don’t know.”

He could feel her hesitation. “If we’re going to live together in the same clan, you’ll need to move past your apprehension of me. I understand why you have it, but I can’t change my looks or what Henry did to you. I also know words don’t mean much, but I’m nothing like he is. Let me prove it. There’s somewhere I want to show you.” He stood. “What do you say?”

She nodded. “Okay. To get out of here, even just for a short time, would be heavenly.”

He smiled at her. “I need to swing by to see Tabitha and get the keys for one of the guards’ SUVs then we can go. Ten minutes.”

She stood and brushed off the butt of her jeans. “Should I meet you somewhere then or something?”

“Come along—it’s fine. I’m off-duty today, but I want to check in with Adam.” He led the way up the creek a bit further until they came to a small footbridge to cross back over. There were so many things he wanted to ask her, but he didn’t. Spooking her would only send her back into her retreat, and it took too long to get her out of her tigress form to risk anything that might send her back. He’d wait until she was ready.

Silence fell over them like a warm blanket. The only thing heard was the crunch of the occasional stick under his boots. There were no birds that frequented the area—too many tigers and bears in the area that scared them off. Felix always enjoyed the quiet, but now in the quiet he found his thoughts full of the woman standing next to him.

“Hey, Felix,” Tabitha called to him as they stepped out of the trees.

“Tabitha and Adam, just the people I was on my way to see. What are you doing out here?” Felix quickly scanned the grounds, checking for any threat.

“Robin’s down with a cold and asked me to check on Harmony,” Adam explained.

“I do hope Robin is all right.” The common cold was not something Felix or the other shifters had to deal with, only their human counterparts. Once a shifter went through the change, they couldn’t catch a cold or the flu, which came in quite handy. Even though Robin was human, she would gain a higher tolerance to illness from her mating, making illness uncommon. The Alpha/clan bond between Robin and Harmony was highly unusual, especially considering Robin was human, but it was there. Robin had no idea how to handle the connection as a shifter automatically did, so it was becoming a learning process for her. In the meantime, the connection was draining her to the point of illness.

“Bethany healed her, so she should be back to normal soon.” Tabitha nodded.

Felix accompanied Robin on her daily visits with Harmony a few times a week, trying to get her used to his presence. Robin was working closely with Harmony to get her to open up and to work past what Henry put her through.

“I was going to take Harmony out for a drive. She’s suffering with a little cabin fever, and I thought a little time off the grounds would give us both a break.” He almost asked if they would like to join, but instead he kept it to himself. It wasn’t for Harmony’s sake but because he wanted to be with her without the others gathered around. He felt the need to prove to her that he was nothing like Henry.

Harmony wasn’t the first woman to see him as a threat or to fear him, and in most cases, that’s what he needed. With Tabitha’s security on the line, he had to seem like a bastard that would do what he threatened. His threat should come from his actions and body language not necessarily from words. However, when it came to Harmony, he was going out of his way to see that she didn’t fear him. Why?

* * *

Trees whipped past the SUV window as Harmony and Felix headed further and further away from the compound. Her heart beat frantically against her ribs, her mind racing through her fears. She could taste her pulse in her throat. What if this was a trap? He could be leading her to Henry. After all, they were twins—surely they had some bond.

“You’re going to have Robin calling.” Felix never turned his gaze away from the road.

“What?”

“Your fear. If I can feel it this strongly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Robin calls and orders me to return you to the compound at once.” He looked over at her. “Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. Do you want me to take you back?”

Part of her wanted to scream ‘yes,’ but if he were taking her to Henry would he have offered to take her back to the compound? She didn’t think so. More importantly, Robin trusted Felix, therefore she was trying to. He might look like the man who had raped and tortured her for months, leaving scars all over her body, but from what she saw of him, he was different.

Staying in Alaska close to Robin, the only person she had any loyalties to, she’d have to trust Felix and the other clan members. This was the first step on the long road to the life she once had. Not that she ever thought she’d be the person she once was. “No, I want to go.”

“I know you’re scared. I should have asked someone else to come, but with Robin a little under the weather, I was out of people you trusted. We could do this another day when Robin can come with us.”

Pawing at her jeans, she tried to wipe the sweat that had coated her palms away. “It’s fine. I wanted to get out. You know Adam wouldn’t have wanted Robin to leave the security of the compound without him, and you both couldn’t have left Tabitha unguarded.”

“Then Adam could take you and Robin, and I will stay at the compound.”

“No.” She turned away from the window to look at him. “Felix, I want to trust you, and I’m trying.”

“I understand. Every time you look at me, it’s hard for you to see me as someone other than Henry. It’s going to be over soon.”

Hadn’t she heard that since she arrived at the compound? It had been weeks of sitting around waiting for Henry to either attack or for someone to find him. In all that time, her leg nearly healed from the nasty bear trap wound. She was tired of waiting—if only she could do something about it. Even if Henry couldn’t shift, he had proven more than once she was no match for him.

“There’s a slight difference in your features. Your jawbone is a little more rounded, the dimples are a little deeper, and your eyes are different. They still hold the edge of danger, but there’s a touch of understand and friendliness to them. The biggest difference between you two is your attitude. He’s, well…”

“Insane?” he supplied.

“Yes.” She shrugged. It was awful to say it aloud, but it was the truth. “I’m sorry.”

“There’s no need to apologize. It’s true, and I’ve known it for years. When we turned eighteen, our parents moved to Australia so they didn’t have to deal with it any longer. The tiger inside him has driven him crazy from not being able to shift. The only difference between Henry and a rogue is that rogues are put down when the tiger takes over. Looks like Henry’s fate will be finding him at last.” Felix turned the SUV onto a dirt road, doing his best to avoid the potholes.

She felt her eyes narrow down at him, watching him intently. “Even though he’s your brother, you’ll kill him?”

He slid the SUV into Park and looked at her. “Yes. Brother or not, he can’t do what he’s done and get away with it. There’s no other recourse for what he’s done.” He let out a deep sigh. “Years ago, when the tiger first started to drive him toward madness, I wanted to do it then, before he could cause any problems. It might seem heartless to some, but we’re not like humans. There’s not a hospital we can put him in. It’s what our kind does when one is sick, we put them out of their misery. Henry is driven by his madness. He’s no longer the brother I grew up with.”

Without thinking, she reached across the gap and laid her hand on his lap. It’s what their kind did when someone hurt. Touch gave them comfort. Her fingers brushed against the back of his hand, and unexpected electricity shot through her. “No!” Tears welled in her eyes with the knowledge of what that meant. Oh, shitit can’t be!

Jennifer’s Review of Snowbound with a Billionaire

Review (5 Stars):  I absolutely loved Max and Raine’s story!!!  Max, a famous movie star, returns home to help his mother after her surgery and runs right into the woman that broke his heart as a teenager. Raine, never forgot her first love, but was devastated when he went to L.A. and left her behind when his acting career had taken off.  Now they have a chance to make things right but Raine is raising a baby which leaves Max to believe that there is another man in her life.  But, Max and Raine soon find themselves snowed in together and old memories quickly rise to surface in such close quarters.

I loved Max and Raine together and I was so glad that they found their way back to each other after so many years apart.  Raine was such a strong character, raising a child alone and trying to make her way in this world without leaning on anyone for support.  She came from a very rich family but to access that money she had to follow whatever rules her society-driven parents wanted for her.  I loved that she wanted to live on a farm and create yummy soaps and lotions to sell at the Farmer’s Market and live her life on her own terms.  Max seemed like the typical Hollywood actor but never got over Raine not joining him when he moved to Los Angeles.  Both of these characters needed closure and getting snowbound with each other was the perfect thing to fix their broken relationship.  I was so mad when I found out why their relationship deteriorated when Max moved to L.A. and was so glad they got back together when they shouldn’t have been separated in the first place.

Snowbound with a Billionaire was a sweet romance that will have you believing in second chances.  Perfect way to spend an afternoon.  Loved Jules Bennett’s writing and can’t wait to read more of her books.

Book Spotlight & Interview: Mystic Cowboy by Sarah M. Anderson

MysticCowboy72web

Today, I am excited to have Sarah here to talk about her new book, Mystic Cowboy.  Have you seen the cover?  All I have to say is that is Rebel is one hot, sexy man and I loved this book.

1. Tell me about your new release.

Mystic Cowboy is a new/old release. It’s been out in ebook for a while, but it’s out in print now and I’m so excited–the cover is even hotter in print than it was on the computer screen!

Mystic Cowboy is about a doctor named Madeline Mitchell who moves out to run a clinic on the White Sandy Lakota Indian reservation.  Once she gets there, she discovers the medicine man, Rebel Runs Fast, is seemingly out to foil her every move.  But before long, things begin to heat up–especially once they go skinny dipping!

2. Where did you come up with the idea for Mystic Cowboy?

It really did come down to an opposites attract situation.  I wanted people who were both trying to make the world a better place and take care of people, but they went about it in totally different ways that placed them in opposition at every turn. Rebel sends people to sweat lodges and Madeline sends them to clinical trials.  In many of the situations, there’s no one right answer–until they have to work together to solve a medical crisis.

Rebel’s name was inspired by a minor-league baseball game I went to.  Small-ball players often have a lot of fun and don’t take themselves too seriously. That night, every single player was introduced with some corny name–Cadillac, McScoochy–and their player headshot featured the same hilariously oversized pair of Elvis sunglasses.  One player had gone with the name Rebel and I thought, man–that’s a great character name! When I thought of the character of a medicine man who never does what people expect, the name was a perfect fit!

3. Do you have any influence on the models for your covers?

I do! Samhain is really wonderful about working with authors to make the cover just right.  I’ll be honest, the first cover looked a bit like Slash, the guitar player for Guns n’ Roses–remember him?–doing a Chippendales  strip tease.  This model was featured on the cover of Cynful by Dana Marie Bell and I said to my editor, why can’t we get a model like him?  And she went and got him. His image is a stock photo, so this exact picture has popped up on…four? Five? I’ve lost count–but a bunch of different romances.

4. Which authors do you feel have been a big influence on you becoming a writer?

I didn’t come from a family of romance readers, believe it or not.  I read Scott O’Dell and Judy Blume, then Stephen King and Dave Barry before I moved onto Charles Dickens and Jane Austen.  I got to the romance eventually! Basically, I just read a lot, across genres and devoured good books.

5. What are you working on now?

I’ve just started The Beaumonts #3,  A Beaumont Christmas Wedding.  It’ll be out in November 2014 from Harlequin Desire.  It’s a new series that kicks off in September 2014 and it’s about a family that owns a huge brewery in Denver, Colorado.  I’m really enjoying it!

Lightning Round:

1. Favorite Food?

Chocolate.  In every form except chocolate-covered espresso beans–I don’t like coffee!

2. TV Guilty Pleasure?

Magnum P.I. I looooove the mustache!!!

3. Most interesting thing that you had to research for a book?

Ohhhh–there are so many weird things–um–I do tend to wander around real estate but I’m also fascinated with historical things, like when modern underwear was invented or how tampons were marketed back in the 1930s.

Oh! I know! For my upcoming May book, Nobody (Men of the White Sandy #3), I had to research interiors to Airstream trailers and you know what? Airstream has the floor plan for every single trailer they’ve ever made digitized and online.  I wandered around there for hours!  You just never know when you’re going to fall down a research hole!

4. Favorite Candy?

You mean, besides chocolate?  Jelly beans or Gummi bears–something light and sweet and perfect for summer (that doesn’t melt all over your hands when it’s hot!)

The White Sandy Reservation needs a doctor, and Madeline Mitchell needs to do a little good in the world. It seems like a perfect fit, until she meets the medicine man, Rebel Runs Fast. As far as Madeline can tell, Rebel’s sole mission is to convince her patients that modern medicine can’t help them.  And the fact that he makes her heart race every time he looks at her only irritates her more.

Rebel swore off the white man’s world–and women–years ago. But he’s never met a woman like Dr. Mitchell. She doesn’t speak the language, understand the customs, or believe he’s anything more than a charlatan–but she stays, determined to help his people. He tries to convince himself that his tribe doesn’t need her, but when patients start getting sick with strange symptoms, he realizes that he needs her more than ever.

Jennifer’s Review of Mystic Cowboy

Review (4.5 Stars):  I loved Rebel and Madeline so much that I want a Rebel of my own!  Madeline moves to the White Sandy Reservation to operate their medical clinic, a clinic where previous doctors stayed less than five months.  Madeline is smart, sassy and ends up verbally sparing with Rebel every time that he enters her clinic.  Rebel is considered a medicine man by his community and is leery of the new doctor on the reservation.  But both of them can’t help but be attracted to one another and sparks fly when they finally get together.

I love the cover of Mystic Cowboy and I was drawn into the story within the first few pages.  Rebel was such an interesting character for me.  Handsome, sexy, artistic and he had given up on women before Madeline entered his life.  He took care of so many people in his community, both financially and spiritually, which makes him a hero in my eyes.  He deserved someone like Madeline who could finally be someone he could count on and wouldn’t see him as the poor man to feel sorry for because he lived on the reservation.

Mystic Cowboy was a hot, steamy romance that kept me up late into the night.  Loved Rebel and Madeline’s story and Ms. Anderson has created characters that you can fall in love with. Looking forward to reading Masked Cowboy which will be out in print later this year.

Jennifer’s Review of Love Your Entity

Review (5 Stars): Sierra has the opportunity to inherit her family’s property but only if she is able to stay in the house for thirty consecutive days.  The problem is that the house is haunted and has scared away everyone that has set foot in it.  She never expected that besides dealing with the ghosts, she has to deal with a gorgeous stranger that always seems to be half-naked when he is around her.  Now she just has to complete her mission by staying in the house, finish writing her new book and hopefully resist from falling into this handsome vampire’s arms.

I loved Ms. Devon’s previous books and Love Your Entity is just as entertaining as the rest of them.  Sierra was a great character that you could instantly relate to and I think she may be my favorite of the series so far.  Sierra is a popular author who writes about a ghost hunter and has had quite a bit of experience in that department because she has been seeing real ghosts since she was little.  Inheriting her family’s townhouse would be a dream come true where she would finally get a chance to settle down in a place that she could call home.

Ronan has been an indentured servant for a hundred years to the vampire that sired him.  Finally free of his master’s bonds, he learns that his deceased sister’s soul is being held captive and the key to her salvation resides somewhere in Sierra’s house.  He can’t see any of the ghosts that are haunting the townhouse, which leads to some hilarious scenes in this book.  I can definitely see Joe Manganiello as Ronan and I could understand why Sierra had a hard time resisting him.

Cat Devon is a wonderful author and Love Your Entity is an entertaining thrill-ride that will have you laughing out loud. Each of her books are a treat and it amazes me how easily I can get lost in her books. Ms. Devon is an author to watch and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

Interview with Jenn Bennett

1. Tell me about your new release, Bitter Spirits.

Thanks so much for having me on your blog! BITTER SPIRITS is the first book in my new Roaring Twenties historical paranormal romance series: in 1920s San Francisco, a scarred man known as the Viking Bootlegger falls wildly in love with a spirit medium when he’s haunted by the ghost of a dead prostitute in Chinatown.

2. How did you come up with the idea for the series?

I also write the Arcadia Bell urban fantasy series, and originally, the Roaring Twenties also started as urban fantasy. But somewhere along the way, I realized that what I enjoyed writing best were the character interactions and their relationships.  So I scrapped the first incarnation and started again, this time focusing on the romance between the hero and heroine.  After that, all the pieces fell into place.

3. What made you pick this time period and what kind of research did you have to do for this or for Aida’s profession?

I’ve been fascinated with early 20th century culture since I was a teenager–the 1920’s in particular.  Over the years, I’ve amassed a small library of research material, including maps, magazines, books, and photographs from that era.  In regards to Aida’s profession as a trance spirit medium, that was rather fun to research.  Spiritualism’s heyday lasted from the second half of the 19th century through the 1920s, and during that time, several mediums made splashy national headlines–like the Fox sisters or Cora Scott or Paschal Beverly Randolph.  Even President Abraham Lincoln attended seances organized by his wife!

4. Have you had any experience yourself with ghosts?

Someone close to my husband’s family claims to be able to see ghosts.  When she was a teenager, she walked into my husband’s childhood home and said it was teeming with ghosts and has since refused to step foot in there again.  My mother-in-law often reports unexplainable things happening in that house–strange noises, lights flickering, objects disappearing and reappearing in different places–but I’ve never experienced anything spooky there myself.

5. What are you working on now?

Quirky young adult contemporary romance (which is an absolute joy to write), and a third book in the Roaring Twenties series.

Lightning Round

1. Favorite Food

This week, it’s Castelvetrano olives (bright green and buttery, from Sicily).

2. Favorite Scary Movie?

Either Susperia or The Shining.

3. Favorite Holiday?

Halloween, hands down!

4. What one thing would people be surprised to find out about you?

When my husband and I lived in the Los Angeles metro area, I had season passes to Disneyland and went, like, all the time.  I knew every secret nook in the park, had a favorite hotel room that overlooked waterfalls (in the Bonita Tower of the Disneyland hotel), and rode Pirates of The Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion rides an obscene number of times.  My dirty little secret is out!

Jennifer’s Review of Bitter Spirits

Review (5 Stars):  What an amazing book!  I loved everything about Bitter Spirits from its fascinating characters to the intriguing supernatural world of the 1920’sI loved having Winter and Aida together as a couple because they just fit so well together.  Winter was a bootlegger haunted by the death of his wife in a car accident that left him physically scarred.  He had such a towering presence that affected everyone around him, but Aida was the only one who saw him as handsome while the rest of the world labeled him a monster.

Aida was my favorite because she had this firecracker personality and made a living as a spiritual medium in San Francisco’s Chinatown.  She was not only haunted by the spirits that she could see in her everyday life but by the death of her own family.  Forced to survive at a very young age, it made her a strong interesting character, which is what I loved about her.

Bitter Spirits is an exciting supernatural mystery that will leave you spellbound.  Ms. Bennett has created an amazing supernatural world that I can’t wait to visit again.  Looking forward to her next release in the series, Grim Shadows, which features Winter’s brother, Lowe.

Book Spotlight & Giveaway: Back To You by Jessica Scott

Back-to-You-Pre-Launch-Blitz-1Q&A With Jessica Scott

1. You first introduced Trent and Laura a few years ago and readers have been eagerly awaiting their story for a few years.  Did you always know when you first created them in BECAUSE OF YOU that this was how their story would play out?
I knew they would have a story to tell but telling their story in this particular way, no I didn’t intend it. It took finding my amazing editor along with multiple attempts at trial and error to get them just right. I’m a nervous wreck about their story, but I’m also really excited because I’m very happy with how their story turned out. Plus, hamsters. Who can argue with that, right?

2. BACK TO YOU is the incredibly emotional story of a marriage at the breaking point.  What or who inspired you to write this story?
I remember standing in the ops one day and one of the guys was on the phone with his wife. He was telling her how much he was sorry, how much he didn’t want to work late. Then one of the other guys remarked that he always says that but he doesn’t ever mean it. So I had this idea of a man who was so driven to get back to war that he let his entire family and personal life suffer, but I also wanted a wife who people could relate to as well. Laura is Trent’s perfect complement.

3. In your own personal life, you’ve been the soldier that has deployed to a war zone and the spouse that stayed home and has taken care of the family on the home front.  Which was more difficult for you in your experience?  And why?
That’s a much bigger topic than we have time for but I’ll say this: each one has its own unique challenges. Being deployed, not being able to get home when your kids are crying that they want mommy, that’s brutal. It rips your soul out. But then coming home and your reality doesn’t live up to the fantasy? In some ways I think it’s worse, and that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. As far as being the wife at home? I remember vividly lying awake at night, obsessively checking to make sure my ringer was turned on. I never cared when he called I just wanted to hear his voice. So which one is worse? I can’t really say. But I’m grateful that we’ve made it through each one a little bit stronger, you know?

4. Which is your favorite story to write—a reunion romances like Trent and Laura’s where each scene is alive with their own history or a fresh romance where they meet for the very first time and everything is new?  Why?
I love a reunion story. I love the idea of being able to forgive and love the person you’re with right then and not the memory of someone. I’m a huge sucker for reunion stories, honestly. I love the reconnection, the noting of how things have changed, of learning to love that person all over again, especially after a betrayal or things didn’t work in the past.

5. Trent is such a compelling character and you do a beautiful job of showing his survivor’s guilt and the resulting anxiety and fear that provokes in him.  He’s both so alpha and strong and so very broken.  What inspired you to create such a complicated hero?  A real life person?  A culmination of your own experiences?  What you’ve seen yourself in the army?  And were you at all concerned about the way readers would respond to him?
Trent is going to be hard for people to read, I suspect. He comes close to crossing some boundaries, and I wanted to do that deliberately: I wanted people to understand that coming home from war isn’t cured in a day or a week. It’s a process. Someone like Trent who has bled in combat isn’t going to be okay after a night of magical sex. I know that’s the fantasy, but I wanted something more: I wanted the fantasy that the couple will be strong enough to make it. So for me, Trent is deeply, deeply personal because I’ve seen friends struggle with some very tough choices. And the truth is, there is no magical cure but there can still be a happily ever after if you have someone strong enough to stand with you.

6. Laura is such an amazing character because she’s done the best for her family at every turn and supported her husband.  But when all communication breaks down with her husband and he just keeps deploying, she serves her husband with divorce papers while he’s serving.  It seems like such a taboo to serve papers while your spouse is deployed—is that true?  And why did you choose to have Laura, the ultimate good wife, respond this way?
Laura sending Trent divorce papers while deployed I think is the ultimate prohibition. It’s just wrong on so many levels, and yet I wanted to give readers a sense of what could drive someone to their breaking point. Laura is such a strong woman and yet she broke. The strongest of us all have our breaking points. I wanted to show people how hard the war has been on everyone—not just the soldiers deploying but on the kids, on the spouses—but I also wanted to give people hope, too.

7. Agent Chaos and Fluffy, the family hamsters, almost steal the show with their disappearing acts and they add the perfect amount of cuteness and comic relief.  What inspired you to add them into the story?
Ah Fluffy and Agent Chaos. So for readers who don’t know, we have hamsters. It all started when we volunteered to buy the pre-k class pet. I didn’t realize that this would include home visits for the holidays. Fluffy was the first hamster and she promptly escaped within the first 24 hours. After that, we’ve become a multiple hamster household and well, when they escape, it’s madness because we have dogs and cats who, by some miracle, haven’t actually ever managed to capture one of the little buggers.
This story badly needed something to lighten it up. I thought adding in some escaping rodents would be the perfect thing to break up a really tough interaction between Trent and his kids. They provided a bridge for him to cross, a way to reach them while he was still getting used to them.

8. Big wedding or small?  Hamsters or dogs?  Sweats or lingerie?
Small wedding. Both hamsters and dogs and cats. Sweats all the way.

9. Emma and Ethan, Trent and Laura’s kids, are adorable and watching Trent learn how to be a dad again is an amazing thing.  How do you think Trent got so detached from his family?
Coming home to be a parent again is probably the hardest thing soldiers do. The kids have changed, they have their own wants and needs and, well, they’re not your soldiers. They don’t listen like your soldiers have to. The noise and the chaos and the constant needs are really tough to get used to again, so I think Trent just ran away because it was too much to deal with.

10. Since this is such an emotionally charged story, was it difficult for you to write?  Or did it come easily?
It was very, very difficult to write. I wanted to push boundaries and create at least a glimpse of what it’s like to come home. I wanted to give readers a taste of the emotions that people go through, the fear, the uncertainty but also the love and the hope and the relief that their loved one is home safe.

11. Since you’ve been in Trent’s shoes, what is the hardest thing about readjusting to civilian life after a deployment?
The crowds and the entitlement. To this day, I won’t go into crowded stores or wait in crowds. It’s suffocating. And it’s funny because when I first came home, I was so annoyed at people complaining about lines and traffic and school starting. I was just so grateful to be back. Now, I’m much more sympathetic to everyday gripes and groans. I think it’s just part of how we get through our days.

BackToYou_ FINAL_revised2

EXCERPT FROM BACK TO YOU

“So, to what do I owe the honor of this visit?” she asked, minimizing her e-mail to be able to focus.

“Don’t throw me out of the office,” he said, trying to keep his voice light. “But I need to talk to you about Trent’s case.”

Laura leaned back in her chair, folding her arms over her chest, and started counting to ten.

“I know you’re having a hard time with him.”

Laura sucked on her top lip for a moment before answering. “I wouldn’t necessarily call filing for divorce a hard time.”

“And that’s what I need to talk to you about.”

“Patrick…”

“Just hear me out, okay?”

She ground her teeth but after a moment nodded.

“Listen, there’s no case against Trent. It’s weak at best. With the Article 32 about to start, we have a good chance of getting it stopped here before it goes to court-martial. But I need to plant doubt that the allegations against him are true.” He met her gaze. “I need you to do that.”

Laura chewed on her bottom lip, playing his words over and over in her head, not understanding what he was asking of her. “What do you mean, you need to plant doubt?”

“The primary witness against your husband, PFC Adorno—”

“Oh, we’ve met,” Laura said dryly.

Patrick’s smile was humorless. “Yes, well, that’s part of the prosecution’s problem. She’s alleging that Trent was inappropriate but the problem is that she and Lieutenant Randall were caught in their shenanigans downrange.”

Laura frowned. “So you think this is a ploy to get herself out of trouble?

“Her and her husband. If they were working together to steal the missing weapons systems, then what better way to get out of trouble than to make this stuff up against Trent? Takes the focus off her and her husband completely.”

Patrick leaned forward, tapping his index finger on the desk. “If I can cast Trent as a sympathetic family man who would never do anything like what she’s alleging, this case is all but dismissed. I’m not attacking her. All I have to do is make Trent look better than the story she’s telling and we’ve got a win.”

“And you need me to paint on a happy face and be the loving wife.”

Patrick shook his head. “No, I need you to be one half of a loving couple. And I need you to do it publicly where everyone can see it—in the PX, in the chow hall, everywhere. I need the officers on this board to believe exactly what I’ll be telling them on the day of the hearing.”

She looked down at her empty ring finger, absently rubbing the bare skin beneath the bandage. “Everyone knows that we’re having problems, Patrick.”

“Then make sure everyone knows you’ve fixed it.” He leaned back. “I wouldn’t ask you to do this if I didn’t think it was our best shot at getting this whole thing thrown out.”

She looked up at him. “Why didn’t Trent ask me to do this?”

Patrick swallowed and looked away. “He refused to drag you into this,” he said quietly. “For what it’s worth, I don’t in a million years believe the allegations against Trent. I don’t think he would ever, ever be unfaithful to you.”

Laura pressed her lips together in a flat line. “You’re wrong, Patrick. He’s been cheating on me for years. It was just with the army instead of another woman.”

“Laura—”

“Let me think about it,” she said quickly. “I won’t say no out of hand but I can’t make this decision on a whim.”

Patrick leaned across the desk, gripping her hand. “I know this is hard for you, Laura. I know what I’m asking you to do.”

She said nothing for a long moment and he gave her a sympathetic but firm smile. “Give it some thought, okay?”

When she was alone, she sat there, staring at the picture of her family. Wondering how she was going to bring him back into the kids’ lives and then rip him out again. What he was asking wasn’t fair. He had no idea what this was going to do to her family.

She glanced at the photo on her desk as she typed furiously, trying to get ahead of the flood of e-mails in her inbox.

There was a quiet rap on her office door. “I’m not here,” she said quickly, looking up.

Her fingers froze on the keyboard. Her heart stopped in her chest.

Trent stood in the doorway. He had a duffle bag slung over his shoulder. His glasses hid the darkness of his eyes. There was a streak of dirt on his cheek. An assault pack hung limply from his left hand.

A thousand emotions ripped through her all at once, rioting for supremacy as she drank in the sight of her husband.

Ex-husband, she reminded herself. Or at least he was supposed to be.

She wished that this were a normal homecoming. One where she would rush across the small space and crash into him.

His arms would come around her and she would inhale the strong spicy scent of his skin. Feel the heat of his touch. Savor that first, wild kiss.
Instead she had this. This empty chasm between them, echoing with loneliness.

And she had no idea how to cross it.

Excerpt 4 – Adult

Connor finally released her and she turned to face him, not even attempting to regulate her uneven breath. Why should she? He attempted no such thing.

“Remove your gown.” The order was harsh.

How dare he speak to her in such a manner? She, a Princess of Ce, when he was nothing but a commoner?

“Or what?” Her words were low, taunting, no matter how she chided herself to remain silent. “You will rip it from my body? Ruin another of my gowns?”

“Aye.” As he spoke, he tossed his length of plaid over his shoulder, his eyes never leaving hers. “If that’s the only way to strip you for my pleasure.”

She gasped at his arrogance, but twisted desire curled around her clitoris and quivered through her wet sheath.

“You would have me dress in rags?” Why was she encouraging him? All she had to do was discard her gown, open her arms and pretend they were back in Ce. There was no place in this life for the entrancing flirting they had enjoyed that night.

He bared his teeth in a parody of the smile that had once captivated her foolish heart. “Madam, I can well afford to ensure you have a dozen new gowns for every one I…ruin.”

This was another really fun, but short ready by Susan. I loved Chris & Gina. It was a little heart breaking knowing how much Chris has pined for Gina over the years. But now is his chance if he can only get Gina to see it.

REVIEW:
This one was super short. But super sweet. I really enjoyed how Noah went after what he wanted. Rachel had no chance to win a battle she didn’t even know she was going to in.

cursed_moonSpecial_final (2)

Bren is a cocky, brash hound of a werewolf who loathes the idea of belonging to Aric’s pack–much less finding a mate. But Bren’s hotheaded behavior lands him in the doghouse when he defies Aric’s authority in front of his pack, bringing up a sore subject that’s bound to make the Alpha wolf’s blood boil…

Luckily for him, no one can stay mad at Bren and his wild charm for long. And when some frightening ghosts launch a hostile paranormal takeover, Bren will team up with Celia Wird to take down the evil ghouls before they hurt someone they both love…

Jennifer’s Review of A Cursed Moon

Review (5 Stars): In this novella, Bren has joined Aric’s pack and is finding it slightly difficult to adjust to pack life.  He constantly calls Aric names and taunts him about Celia at every turn which hasn’t really gone over too well with his new Alpha.  In his spare time, Bren hangs with the only people that he truly cares about: Dan and The Wird Sisters.  During a visit with Celia, they are both attacked by evil spirits that have been summoned by a witch and it is now their job to put a stop to her.  If they can’t find her and destroy her, the evil spirits will take over the town and try to kill as many people as possible, including the people Bren cares about most.

In the Weird Girls series, Bren has always been in the background and we never really knew much about him until now.  We finally learn his back story and how he met his best friend, Dan.  Bren, at times is an absolute jerk and will stick his foot in his mouth at the wrong time which has gotten him into a bit of trouble.  But he is a good friend and will fight until his last dying breath to protect the people that he loves which makes me adore him all the more. I want him to be my new book boyfriend because he is definitely the guy that I want to have on my side in any kind of fight.  Unless it is with Aric, then I’m going to get as far away from Bren as possible.

I love this series and I can’t wait to read Cursed by Destiny which continues the story of the Wird Sisters after the events of A Cursed Embrace.  Cecy Robson is such a talented writer and each one of her books are action-packed thrill rides with such amazing characters. I adore Ms. Robson and I’m looking forward to reading more of her books in the future.
