Making notes is not my best skill.  Even when I jot down quick, daily messages to myself like “pick up milk, return library books, mail packages, PUT GAS IN CAR” I often leave the list behind as I head out on my errands — which, as you can imagine, becomes problematic when I run out of gas. It’s no surprise, then, that I keep horrible notes when writing a book.  I’m forever leaving that task until after the book is complete.  This means that while I would enjoy sharing the history of how I created Friday, I have no clear memory.

This is not to say I created Friday the day – I think we all know better – but Friday the kitten. She’s just right there on the cover of Ill-Gotten Panes.  A little white ball of fluff with a smudge of gray between her ears.  That’s Friday.  My main character, Georgia Kelly, finds her early on in the story – minutes after her beloved grandfather is picked up for questioning in relation to a murder.

I knew early on that Georgia would have at least one pet and she had to start somewhere.  And because she’s only recently returned to her childhood home and doesn’t have plans to remain there, maybe I thought a cat would be the best addition.  Should Georgia leave the community town of Wenwood (should she manage to clear her grandfather’s name), Friday would be able to go with her, cats being generally easier than dogs to convince a landlord to allow.

But what about the apparent risk of having a cat tiptoeing around when Georgia creates stained glass boxes/windows/lamps? All those sharp edges and colorful shards might tempt a playful feline.

BLOG 2 PIC 2

To answer that concern, I had to look to my own life.  Of the five (yes, five) cats sharing my home, only one has any interest in my glasswork.  Though three years old, she has lost none of her kitten-like curiosity.  When I am working with glass – cutting, breaking, soldering in much the same way (but with nowhere near the skill) my main character Georgia would – Anya takes up residence at the end of the table, eyes wide, tail circling her seated form, and watches my every move.  During this time the senior cats are sleeping, Anya’s litter mat is no doubt plotting a coup, and the youngest is stalking doorways to the outside world, hoping a bug (aka protein snack) might crawl through.  Anya never reaches for the glass, never walks across a work surface or tries to steal any of the pattern pieces or lighter-weight tools.  She merely watches as though learning, and shares her comforting company with me.

So while I don’t have any notes to tell me exactly why I thought Georgia should have a cat, I suspect my own Anya is much of the reason.

Stained-glass aficionado Georgia Kelly packed up her city life for the quiet of small town Wenwood, New York. But the sleepy village’s peace is about to get shattered—by murder…After a banking scandal loses Georgia her job and fiancé, she decides that a change of scenery will help piece her life back together. But escaping to her grandfather’s house in the old-fashioned, brick-making Hudson River hamlet of Wenwood, New York, turns out to be less relaxing than she expects. Not only is the close-knit community on edge about their beloved brickworks being turned into a marina to draw in tourists, one of those most opposed to the project winds up dead—cracked over the head with a famous Wenwood brick.Georgia wouldn’t be broken up over the news except for the fact that the main suspect is the deceased’s biggest adversary—her grandfather. Now, to remove the stain from her Grandy’s record, Georgia will have to figure out who in town was willing to kill to keep the renovation project alive, before someone else is permanently cut out of the picture…

Jennifer’s Review of Ill-Gotten Panes
Review (4.25 Stars): I enjoyed this debut mystery because it was nice to read a book about someone that had a hobby I knew nothing about.   Recently losing a job in high finance and losing her boyfriend in one fell swoop leaves Georgia in need of a place to regroup so she moves to the one place that has always made her feel safe.  Living with her grandfather in Wenwood, New York.  Once living there, Georgia finds that in small towns everyone knows your name before you do and holds a lot of secrets that people want to stay hidden. After having a run-in with the local owner of the hardware store, who has a long history with her grandfather, Georgia is surprised to learn that the man was murdered shortly after her encounter with him.  Her grandfather is now the prime suspect and everyone in town believes that he may have committed the crime.  Now, Georgia needs to dig a little deeper into the town’s history and her grandfather’s rivalry with this man to find the true killer before her grandfather is charged with the crime.

I think that Ill-Gotten Panes is a delightful and fun mystery that is shaping up to be a great series.  I liked Georgia because she was spunky, opinionated and had a great personality.  Her world was falling apart after losing everything in New York but I liked that she didn’t whine about it, she just made the most of it until she found something better.  At times, she seemed unsure of her place in this town because she was used to living in a big city where no one knew her name compared to Wenwood, where people she didn’t even know had already heard her life story.  The secondary characters made this story interesting because unlike other cozy mysteries, I wasn’t exactly sure who Georgia could trust.  One minute people seemed happy to see her and then the next, they were rushing her out of their store or gave her the cold shoulder.  Because of this, I had no idea who was the killer until the final reveal which made it fun trying to guess who it was. Ill-Gotten Panes is a quick and easy read and I have a new author to add to my list of favorite cozy mystery writers.

How I’m Spending My Summer Vacation

by Laurie Cass

Not so very long ago, I sent my editor the manuscript for the third bookmobile cat book, Borrowed Crime, a full three hours before the deadline.  Hooray!

I celebrated in style by checking some books out of the library and settling in with a healthy quantity of dark chocolate.  After a few days I resurfaced, blinked at the bright shiny world, and said “Hey, I don’t have a book due any time soon.”

Matter of fact, I have months and months until the next one is scheduled for delivery.  For the rest of the summer, I can be a normal person! There will be no need for me to write in the morning before starting the day job.  For a few weeks I won’t have to write during my lunch hour, and I won’t have to spend the summer inside writing when my family and friends are outside playing in the sunshine!

After that blinding realization, I started thinking about all the things that I could do to fill my summer.  There will, of course, be a lot of reading, specifically reading outside.  Reading on the porch, reading in the hammock, reading on the patio, reading on the swing, reading at the beach, etc.

And gardening.  I want to do lots of gardening. Last summer I was so busy writing that I never caught up with either the weeds, the plant-moving, or the trimming and I’m loving a chance to roll up my sleeves, pull on the gardening gloves, and get down to the wonderfully dirty work of gardening.

Plus, not far away, there’s an outstanding new mountain biking trail system that I’ve been wanting to explore.  And there’s waterskiing to do – maybe this will be the summer that I learn to do one-handed turns.  And there are a number of new restaurants in the area whose menus look extremely interesting.  And, once I get the piano tuned, the Maple Leaf Rag is still waiting for me.

Then again, if I don’t have to work on a book for a few weeks, I’ll have time to do all that promotional stuff I’ve wanted to do but never had time.  Last winter, a reader suggested that I create an Eddie bookmark and put it up on my website so people can download and print it at home.  Wonderful idea! And now I have time!

And I’ve also wanted to come up with a paper version of my fictional bookmobile.  Thanks to the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services, I have a blank version of the cutest little bookmobile ever – all I have to do is work the graphics onto it.

And I can’t forget the author events I have lined up this summer, which can be great fun.  And I should get going on setting up a template for my e-newsletter.

Plus, there’s some research I’d like to do for future book ideas.  I have a couple of potential plots in mind, but to make sure they’ll actually, you know, make sense, I have to do some delving.

But, hang on.  Maybe it would make more sense to get a head start on the next bookmobile cat book, the books that my husband calls “the Eddie books.” Or…should I try to be more normal this summer?

Such a dilemma. I think there are three conclusions to this:

  1. All that stuff is never going to get done. (And I didn’t even mention painting the house.)
  2. I’m a writer and should, by now, be used to the idea that I’m never going to be a normal person.
  3. I’m okay with both 1) and 2).

Jennifer’s Review of Tailing a Tabby

Review (4 Stars):  Tailing a Tabby is an enjoyable fun mystery and I love that Minnie’s job is to drive the bookmobile all around the community.  Libraries mean a lot to me and I remember visiting our bookmobile as a child because the local library was too far for us to go to on a regular basis. Minnie is an adorable character that is sweet and spunky and I love her cat, Eddie.  Some of the scenes with Eddie are so cute and I can understand why he is such a hit with the bookmobile patrons.

Tailing a Tabby is the second book in the Bookmobile Cat mystery series and Ms. Cass has a delightful writing style that makes it easy for you to become involved in the story and you don’t have to read them in order to follow along. I’m looking forward to reading more of Minnie’s adventures with her adorable cat in the future and this reminds me that I need to thank a librarian for helping me discover the joys of reading at an early age.

Jennifer’s Review of Suddenly Last Summer

Review (5 Stars): I absolutely adored this sweet small town romance and fell in love with the town of Snow Crystal.  Elise and Sean had a very interesting relationship because they shared one night of passion last summer but now pretended they didn’t have any feelings for each other.  When Sean comes back to town to help his family after his grandfather is rushed to the hospital, him and Elise are walking on eggshells whenever they are together.  They don’t want to admit that they are still attracted to each other and both of them try to stay busy so they don’t have to discuss certain issues in their life that they would just like to keep hidden.

I liked Elise because even though she seemed a little intense at times, she was fiercely loyal to the people that she cared about and the ones that had helped her during one of the lowest points in her life.  Sean seemed a little arrogant in the beginning of the book because he was an Orthopedic Surgeon and just felt that his life was too busy to return home for longer than a couple of days.  I was so glad to see that he mellowed out as the story progressed and became exactly what Elise needed in her life.

Suddenly Last Summer was a very charming and sweet romance that had me falling in love with the residents of Snow Crystal.  Ms. Morgan has written a lovely story of two people who finally realize that it is never too late to have a second chance at love and I am sure that I will want to revisit their story again and again.  I’m hoping that Tyler and Brenna get their shot at romance in the future because those two definitely need to have their story told.

Another Weekend, Another Festival – and Another Body

by Leslie Budewitz

“Gourmet food market owner Erin Murphy is determined to get Jewel Bay, Montana’s scrumptious local fare some national attention.  But her scheme for culinary celebrity goes up in flames when the town’s big break is interrupted by murder…”

Thanks to the Books-n-Kisses crew for welcoming me here today, to share a bit about Crime Rib, the second book in my Food Lover’s Village Mysteries.

Out here in western Montana, summers are short and intense–and in every corner of the state, we celebrate.  The Festival of Nations. Mule Days, Homesteader Days, Buzzard Days–honoring ‘nature’s cleaners’. The Strawberry Festival. Rendezvous Days.  Pow Wows.  Sweet Pea Festival of the Arts.  Dog and Grog, celebrating hot dogs and cold beer.  Lewis & Clark Reenactments.  Music festivals: jazz, bluegrass, Celtic, guitar, Mozart, and more.  And on and on–not to mention Huckleberry Days in half a dozen towns, celebrating the tart, purple jewels Montanans fight the bears for every August.

As if there weren’t enough festivals, in Death al Dente, the first book in the series, Erin Murphy invents another, the Festa di Pasta.  After a decade in Seattle, she returns to her hometown, Jewel Bay, Montana, to take over the Merc, her family’s century-old general store, and turn it into a market filled with local foods and treats.  A weekend celebrating Italian food, with music in the streets and fun and games for all ages, seems like the perfect summer kickoff.  But when the former manager is found dead in the alley on opening night and her mother is accused of murder, Erin dives in to save both her family and the store.  She succeeds, but not before confronting a chef bent on keeping his past a secret, challenging her old friend, now the local sheriff’s detective, and rescuing her new boyfriend and her shop assistant from permanent cold storage.

So in Crime Rib, she’s not going to take charge of anything.  She’ll help–the tiny, unincorporated town would be nothing without its volunteers, and the Murphys have always been among the first to raise their hands.  But she’s just going to enjoy the 35th Annual Summer Art and Food Festival.  Sure, she’ll be scouting for new vendors for the Merc.  She’ll drool over the paintings and pottery–maybe even pick up a piece or two.  She’ll be glad to assist the crew of the TV show Food Preneurs, in town to film the event and give the local fare some national attention.  And she’ll eat her fill at the Grill-off, the friendly competition to see which village chef serves up the best steak.

But when the show’s producer is killed in a hit-and-run, Erin is drafted to step in.  Then one of the contestants is attacked and dies.  To keep the town’s reputation from crashing and burning on national TV, Erin must grill a few suspects to smoke out the killer.

I’ve always loved the annual Festival of the Arts in my community.  It’s a feast for the eyes, a chance to soak up art and music in the warm sunshine by the lake, to see old friends and meet new ones.  To find a shiny bracelet, sparkling earrings, a hand-carved gourd, or a cattail basket with an antler handle, decorated with tiny seed pods and bits of pale green moss plucked from old growth spruce.  To pick up braided sweetgrass, used as ceremonial incense by the local tribes, and soaps scented with wild-crafted herbs.  To discover new taste treats–there are no calories on Festival days.  And like Erin, I think there’s little better than strolling down the main street crammed with art and artists, licking a cone filled with Chocolate Heaven ice cream.

Last summer, I participated in the Festival as an artist for the first time.  What a treat to share a glorious summer day with hundreds of art lovers.  To tell them the origins of the book, why I set it here and what I had to change.  To inscribe their names in my books and wish them a great visit to Jewel Bay, a place that exists only on the page–and in the heart.  To see the smiles on their faces as they carried off their souvenirs, and to wave at them when they strolled past at the end of the day, already fast friends.  To chat with other artists, see their wares, and hear their stories.  It’s hot and exhausting.  My hand hurt from signing and my cheeks ached from grinning.  And I can hardly wait to go back this August.

Turns out, Erin’s right. The best part of a festival is not the art or the ice cream, but the people.  The smiles on their faces and the spark in their eyes.  I hope you’ll join me at this year’s festival–on the village streets, and on the pages of Crime Rib.

Food Preneurs, one of the hottest cooking shows on TV, has decided to feature Jewel Bay in an upcoming episode, and everyone in town is preparing for their close-ups, including the crew at the Glacier Mercantile, aka the Merc. Not only is Erin busy remodeling her courtyard into a relaxing dining area, she’s organizing a steak-cooking competition between three of Jewel Bay’s hottest chefs to be featured on the program.

But Erin’s plans get scorched when one of the contending cooks is found dead. With all the drama going on behind the scenes, it’s hard to figure out who didn’t have a motive to off the saucy contestant. Jennifer’s Review of Crime Rib

Review (4.5 Stars): The little town of Jewel Bay, Montana is preparing for the 35th Annual Summer Art and Food Festival and enjoying the national attention by the TV show, Food Preneurs, who is filming a cooking competition for a future episode.  During the planning stages of the competition, the producer of the show becomes a victim of a hit and run and it is up to Erin to take over as her replacement.  Determined to keep everything running smoothly while balancing the duties of the Merc, Erin does her best to organize the cooking competition but a killer has other ideas for this event.  Erin must now try to find the killer before Jewel Bay becomes known for something other than its great gourmet food.

This is the second book in the Food Lovers’ Village Mystery series and I have come to love the town and inhabitants of Jewel Bay, Montana.  Erin is a sweet character that always seems to find a dead body after moving back home to help run her family’s market.  I like her personality and she is someone that you can instantly connect with.  I also love that she has a great relationship with her family and the rest of this lovely community.  The mystery is well-written and will keeping you guessing until the final reveal.  I love culinary mysteries and Crime Rib talked so much about wonderful food that it made me hungry all the time that I was reading it. 🙂  Crime Rib is a savory addition to a great series that will have you craving more from this talented author.  I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series to see what Erin is up to next.

Muffins: the Cupcake’s Underappreciated Sister

by Victoria Hamilton

If muffins and cupcakes were characters in a book, they would be the Misses Elinor and Marianne Dashwood in Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility.  For those who are not Janeites, a brief explanation is in order.  Elinor Dashwood is the ‘Sense’ of the title, while Marianne Dashwood, her younger sister, is the ‘Sensibility’, a word out of favor now but meant to describe someone who is all feeling and showy emotion.

How does that apply to baked goods? Cupcakes are the darling of the media nowadays.  Just look at the TV shows dedicated to them: Cupcake Wars, DC Cupcakes, The Cupcake Girls.  Cupcakes are showy, flamboyant, pretty and much adored.  Muffins…not so much.  Muffins come in sensible flavors like Bran and Banana, and the showiest they get is to be called Morning Glory Muffins, which is a fancy way of saying they have a lot of ingredients that are good for you.  Muffins are wholesome and homely.

But delicious! And simple to make, and bursting with flavor.

I’ve never made cupcakes.  That many empty calories just isn’t my thing.  But muffins…they have always been my go-to baked good.

In Bran New Death, Book #1 of the Merry Muffin Mysteries, my protagonist, Merry Wynter, describing the difference between muffins and cupcakes, has a conversation with Jack McGill, the real estate agent who is trying to help her sell her castle.

Merry says: “It’s easy. Most people think that if it’s frosted or iced, then it’s a cupcake, but that’s not so.  Some muffins can be frosted too.  Instead, think of the difference between a banana cake and a loaf of banana bread.”

“Okay,” he (Jack) said. “I got that.”

“Well, with the batter of a banana cake, you can make cupcakes, and with the batter for banana bread, you can make banana muffins.  You can do the same with any cake batter or quick bread batter.”

“Ah!” he said, his eyes lighting up. “Cakes are to cupcakes as, uh, what did you call it?”

“Quick bread,” Shilo, (Merry’s friend) who had not gone to feed Magic, (her bunny) filled in.

“Right…cakes are to cupcakes as quick breads are to muffins!”

And Merry is right on…of course, I wrote her that way! She manages to carve out a baking niche for herself in Autumn Vale, New York, supplementing her dwindling finances by supplying muffins to the baked good craving population of the town.

So…if you don’t bake, or are intimidated by all those showy frosted cupcakes, give muffin baking a try!  I guarantee, you won’t be disappointed.  Who needs icing when the muffin itself has so much flavor?

And you can start when you get Muffin But Murder, Book #2 of the Merry Muffin Mysteries, because I give you a killer recipe for muffins Fit For The King…I’ll leave you to discover what that means, but they are delicious!

Jennifer’s Review of Muffin But Murder

Review (4.5 Stars): This is the second book in the Merry Muffin series and I loved the second installment much better than the first.  This time around, Merry is throwing an extravagent Halloween party to showcase Wynter Castle for prospective buyers.  Everything is going according to plan except for a few uninvited guests and the fact that she finds a dead body in the coffin that she had on display.  Now, Merry must help find the killer to clear a friend’s name and prevent the Wynter Castle from getting a deadly reputation to prospective buyers.

Muffin But Murder had me hooked from the very beginning and I finished this book in one afternoon.  Merry is definitely growing on me as I follow her adventures while she is settling down in Autumn Vale.  I liked her personality and the determination to make things work out in her life even when things were definitely not going the way that she wanted them to.  The mystery aspect was very entertaining and I was having a difficult time putting all the clues together to figure out who was the killer in this one.  Ms. Hamilton has created another delightful mystery with Muffin But Murder and I’m looking forward to seeing what will happen next with Merry and her friends in Autumn Vale.

*EXCERPT*

Landry’s truck sits in the driveway when I stroll out of the house at a quarter to eight in the morning. I’m in such a glorious mood that I don’t bother trying to sneak off without him catching sight of me. It would’ve been easy, I learn upon climbing on the bumper and sticking my head through the truck’s open window. He has the seat pushed back and his legs stretched out kitty corner across the passenger seat. Snores, loud enough to scare a bear, echo through the cab.

I reach in and poke his shoulder a few times. “Wake up, Sleeping Beauty.”

Landry’s thick lashes flutter then open to meet mine. “I’m supposed to be woken with a kiss, not a jab.”

I snort. “I don’t kiss slimy critters. You’re playing double duty as a frog, and I throw them in a frying pan with a little butter and garlic.”

“Oh, so now you’re trying to butter me up?”

The heat of a blush rises. “Saints, boy. You’re fraying my last nerve.” I plant my hands on my hips, toe tapping. “What are you doing here? In case you forgot, I’m mad at you.”

“No you’re not.” He grins and runs his fingers through his thick hair. My breath catches as my brain stutters. I shake my head to dispel the wave of pheromone-induced stupidity that washes over me. My noses twitches. Why does he have to smell so good? Like cinnamon and brown sugar. “Did you forget yester—”

An oily paper bag flies in my direction. I grab it out of the air before it drops to the ground. It’s warm in my hands, and the smell makes my mouth water. “Ooh, cinnamon rolls,” I mumble around the melting mouthful of cinnamon-y goodness. “I love these.”

“I know,” Landry says, throwing open the truck door.

I hop off the bumper with a scowl. The arrogant jerk thinks he has me eating out of his hands; all he has to do is flutter those insanely long eyelashes, smile to show off his pearly whites, and tempt me with fresh, warm buns.

“These are mine?” I clutch the bag to my chest as I eye him in suspicion.

“Yeah, they’re your favorite, right?”

“Mmm hmm.”

Landry props his elbow on the open window and ducks his head. Black hair tangles across his face, hiding his eyes. “I hoped you’d be more accepting of my apology if I bribed you with sweets. Forgive me for being an ass yesterday?”

Lucky guy. He figured out the fastest way to soften my heartstrings—sugar. Wait how does he know they’re my favorite? Stupid question. It’s like him knowing my nickname and my job. He pays way too much attention to me, and I’m kinda scared to ask why. I stare at my sticky fingers, then lick the icing off one by one. Landry’s gaze draws my attention. He’s staring at my mouth. My gut tightens in response, and I slowly lick my lips. Get a grip. Don’t trust him just because he says he’s sorry.

I concentrate on the mouthful of cinnamon roll. Each chew echoes the rapid patter of my heart. God, why does my body react like this when I’m around him? Why? He’s still staring at me. Can’t he tell I’m uncomfortable? Oh, I get it. He’s irritating me on purpose so I can’t totally ignore him.
I pass the empty bag to him. “You’re not going away, are you?”

“Nope.” He smiles.

Traveling the world inspired her imagination and allowed her to create her own imaginary friends. Visits to her father’s family in Louisiana inspired this story. Angie now lives in Northern California with her husband, two children, and an overweight Labrador.

Jennifer’s Review of Dark Paradise

Review (4.25 Stars): Mala LaCroix has always been considered the black sheep of the community because the women in her family have been labeled as witches and she has been fighting this gossip most of her life. One day, Mala finds the body of Lainey Prince in the swamp on her family’s property and her world is suddenly turned upside down when she is pulled into the hunt for the girl’s killer.  Landry Prince, Lainey’s brother, has always been attracted to Mala but has never had the courage to talk to her before Lainey’s death.  The two must now join forces to find Lainey’s killer before the killer takes its next victim.

I couldn’t get through this book fast enough because I was immediately hooked from the very beginning and couldn’t wait to finish it.  Mala was a strong, independent woman who was used to taking care of herself because her mother spent most of her time drinking and chasing men.  I liked her character instantly and sympathized with her as she dealt with the aftermath of finding Lainey’s body. Especially, when she starts experiencing terrifying visions of the dead and finds that the town gossip may actually be true.

Mala had this love/hate relationship with Landry from the beginning because she never knew he had feelings for her and always thought he was just stalking her every time he showed up at her work. Finding the body brought Mala closer to Landry and I’m curious to see how their relationship progresses in the next book.  There is this sense of uncertainty between them and you aren’t quite sure if their relationship has what it takes to survive after this ordeal.

I liked Ms. Sandro’s writing style and enjoyed reading the book from both the viewpoints of Mala and Landry. Dark Paradise was an engaging supernatural mystery that will definitely keep you up at night.  Can’t wait to read the next book in the series, Dark Sacrifice, which will be out later this year.

Interview with Molly Harper

Books-n-Kisses is super excited to have one of our favorite authors Molly Harper on the blog today!!!  Molly just had a new release Better Homes and Hauntings.  Better Homes and Hauntings is a stand alone book.   Let’s learn a little about what makes Ms. Harper tick.

mollyaugustMolly, can you please share with us a little about yourself.

I am a newspaper reporter turned church secretary turned romance novelist from western Kentucky. I am married to my high school sweetheart, a captain with our local police department. I am obsessed with sushi and Tom Hardy movies.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Yes, but I didn’t think the chances were good.  There aren’t many authors from Paducah, Ky. So I pursued a career in journalism because I thought it would be awesome to make my living writing in some capacity.  (I was right. It was awesome.) But the schedule was insane. Combined with my husband’s even less predictable schedule, it made life with kids pretty complicated. I took a more stable position as a secretary at a local Baptist church and started writing books at night.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

I have to have lip balm nearby. Preferably the little Eos balls.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?Comp_5_rev_night_2

This is my first standalone paranormal romance and my first haunted house story, so I am thrilled to have written my own grown up, highly romantic version of a Scooby Doo episode. The Crane’s Nest is a Gilded Era mansion that never quite made it as a family home since Gerald Whitney, the business tycoon who built it was accused of murdering his wife shortly after it was completed. The murder mystery and inevitable stories of hauntings and family curses followed the Whitneys throughout the generations. Deacon Whitney, a social media mogul who has managed to rebuild his fortune, wants to restore the house to its former glory and finally put the supernatural rumors about his family to an end. The team of experts he assembles to remodel the house is contracted to live there over the summer while the work is completed, a measure he had to take after mysterious noises and cold spots chased away previous teams.

Landscaper Nina Linden is hired to rehabilitate the gardens and she sees it as her chance to rebuild her failing business after being cheated by her unscrupulous ex-partner. She never expects that her new client would see more in her than just a green thumb. But Nina shows no signs of being scared away, even as she experiences some unnerving apparitions herself. And as the two of them work closely together to restore the mansion’s faded glory, Deacon realizes that he’s found someone who doesn’t seem to like his fortune more than himself—while Nina may have finally found the one man she can trust with her bruised and battered heart.

But something on the island doesn’t believe in true love…and if Nina and Deacon can’t figure out how to put these angry spirits to rest, their own love doesn’t stand a ghost of a chance.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

I knew I wanted to set in on an island. I thought about the coast of Washington or South Carolina. And then I saw one of those true murder mystery shows and the episode was set on Newport. I took one look at the houses and there and thought, “Oh, yeah, I could haunt that.” I looked up info on the Breakers, Rosecliff, The Elms, all of the Gilded Era mansions and the ghost story practically wrote itself.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I am working on several spin-offs to the Half-Moon Hollow series. I could tell you about them, but then Ophelia would send a vampire goon squad after me.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

Nora Roberts, because she is the queen.  I would say Jane Austen, but if she was walking around, that would mean zombies are a thing and I don’t want that to happen.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Just sit down and start writing. Don’t wait until you have time.  Don’t lose yourself in research. Just sit down and do it.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

See Italy.  I would go to Venice and eat all of the gelato.  All of it.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I am eager for the next book in Mari Mancusi’s Scorched series.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I will be writing several more spin-offs to the Half-Moon Hollow books.  Also, my Half-Moon Hollow Christmas short story, I’M DREAMING OF AN UNDEAD CHRISTMAS, will be available in ebook on November 3, 2014. And third book in the Bluegrass contemporary series, SNOW FALLING ON BLUEGRASS, will be released on September 22.

Better Homes and Hauntings

Release Date: 06/24/14
Amazon | B&N

When Nina Linden is hired to landscape a private island off the New England coast, she sees it as her chance to rebuild her failing business after being cheated by her unscrupulous ex. She never expects that her new client, software mogul Deacon Whitney, would see more in her than just a talented gardener. Deacon has paid top dollar to the crews he’s hired to renovate the desolate Whitney estate—he had to, because the bumps, thumps, and unexplained sightings of ghostly figures in nineteenth-century dress are driving workers away faster than he can say “Boo.”

(June 24, 2014; Forever Mass Market: $8.00)
The One Man She Can’t Have
Matt Dean was born to fight . . . and kill. A member of a secret black-ops military unit, he and his brothers were genetically engineered by the government to be the perfect soldiers with an expiration date. Now, with time running out, he’s gone rogue in a relentless quest for the one person who can save them. His mission leads him to Charmed, Idaho . . . and to a beautiful woman with eyes like emeralds and a body made for pleasure.
The One Woman He Can’t Resist
Laney Jacobs knows the mysterious, handsome stranger is trouble from the moment he walks into her bar, looking for a job. She’s spent years running from her own past-the last thing she needs is a romantic entanglement. But Matt’s strong arms offer her protection and his gentle touch promises passion unlike anything she’s ever known. As lethal forces surround them, revealing explosive secrets about Matt’s past and putting everything-and everyone-he holds dear in danger, can he save them all before time runs out?
An excerpt from Sweet Revenge:

Life would be easier if Matt could view the petite bar owner like a family member or even an employer, but as he watched her deliver another pitcher of tea to the women gathered around the table, he realized that was impossible. She laughed at something one of the women said, and his cock hardened. Again.

The woman had spunk, intelligence, and a heart-shaped ass. Of course he wanted her naked and sweating beneath him. That confused as much as irritated him. She was the exact opposite of what he usually looked for in a woman. Temporary, tough, and unemotional worked best, and the idea of being with someone soft and kind scared the shit out of him.

Laney was right to keep him at a distance.

The new phone he’d purchased early that morning buzzed, and he glanced down at his first text message of the day. Nate had texted that he was safe and would check in later. Relief relaxed Matt’s shoulders upon reading that his brother was all right. The guy hadn’t been out on a mission for years, and Matt had been worrying about him. Maybe Nate would finally heal from falling in love and being betrayed.

If anybody could throw a dose of cold water on Matt’s desire to pursue Laney, it’d be hard-assed Nate. He perceived only black and white, danger and safety. There was no safety in seducing Laney… for anybody. She wasn’t the woman Matt needed to find in Charmed.

Plus, as much as the idea turned Matt’s stomach, if he had to seduce the elusive Dr. Peters to secure her help, to save his brothers, he’d do it.

Of course, the family practitioner was the one woman who wasn’t sitting around the table. He’d paid special attention to the coroner and the veterinarian’s assistant, and the vet’s assistant was currently checking him out behind wire-rimmed glasses. Bright eyes showed intelligence and an interesting wariness. He shot her a smile.

Her cheeks pinkened, and she half turned to talk to the woman on her right.

Laney, sitting across from the vet, instantly shot a look his way, delicate eyebrow arched. He met her stare evenly, pleased when her high cheekbones filled with color. The fact that she kept his gaze with challenge in her eyes, even while blushing, pleased him even more. The polite thing to do would be to grant her a reprieve and look away.

Too bad he wasn’t a polite guy.

Laney should learn not to challenge him.

Her chair scraped back, and she muttered something to her friends and then calmly maneuvered around tables toward him, hips swaying… keeping his gaze the entire time. His shoulders went back, and his blood started to hum. Who was this woman so full of surprises?

She reached him, her eyes sparking in irritation. “Would you please stop turning the most successful businesswomen in town into simpering morons?” she whispered.

He blinked. Damn it. He focused down a foot at her irritated face. “What in the world are you talking about?”

Her body remained relaxed, but he could hear her heart thumping, and her expression was quickly transforming into anger. She kept her face angled away from the women at the table. “Stop smiling, stop flirting, and do your job.”

He lowered his face just enough to make her eyes widen. “You sound jealous.”

Ah. There was the fury. “I’m not, you jackass. Keep the charm in your pants, and stop flirting.”

Okay. He may have poured on the charm with the two women he needed to investigate, but he’d been trained in subtlety and covert action. “Why are you suddenly interested in what’s in my pants?”

Laney’s gasp heated him in all sorts of places. “If I have to tell you again to knock it off, you’re fired.”

The little spitfire had better be careful who she threatened. “So you want me unavailable to those women?”

Satisfaction filled her pretty face. “Exactly.”

“Okay.” He grasped her hip and covered her mouth with his. The kiss was hard, quick, and enough of a taste to make him crave more. He lifted away to gauge the shock on her face. “There. Now they think I’m taken.”

The air vibrated as her hand closed into a fist, and he shook his head. “You don’t want to hit me.”

“Why not?” she ground out.

For the first time, he let his mask slip so she could see the predator the government had created. “The second you make contact, I’ll have you on that bar, held tight, my cock pressed between your legs, my lips on yours until you beg for more. Even fully clothed, I may make you come—and I won’t care who’s watching.”

Her sexy mouth dropped open. Surprise and fury lit her eyes… along with desire. She tried to mask it, but he was an expert at reading people, and the woman was intrigued. “You egomaniac. I’m not remotely interested,” she whispered.

Surprising anger shot through him. “You want to threaten me? That’s fine. Challenge me? No problem.” He stepped even closer and into her space. “But don’t you ever lie to me. Ever, Laney.”

She pressed her hands against her hips, confusion blanketing her features. “We just met.”

The woman was correct. He had no right to demand a damn thing from her. For all she knew, he was a bad guy. But this once and with this woman, against all rational training and thought, he truly didn’t give a shit. He didn’t understand it, sure as hell couldn’t explain it. So he went with his gut. “Yeah, we did just meet. Those are the ground rules. Period.” He lowered his chin and waited for her to challenge him, anticipation lighting his veins.

Guest blogger Carrie Ann Ryan talks about her new book Fighting Fate

Fighting Fate, as most of you know, ends the story arc that has been throughout the Redwood Pack. I had always planned on ending the series at 7 books with a few more novellas thrown in.

I’m not changing that.

However, that doesn’t mean I need to say goodbye to the world…or the Redwood Pack children.

Tee hee.

Yep. I’m writing the Talon Pack series starting in early 2015. Set thirty years in the future, the Talon Pack will follow the other Pack you’ve seen in the Redwood Pack series. Gideon, the Alpha, will be book 1, Tattered Loyalties.

And who is his mate?

Well, since it’s thirty years in the future and I can’t say goodbye to the Redwoods fully….

Brie is his mate.

Yes, that Brie.

Jasper and Willow’s daughter.

I’m so stinking excited about this. It’s a whole new plot arc meaning you don’t need to read the Redwoods before this one, and we won’t get tired of the same story over and over. Instead, we get to see a new Pack, new abilities, new mates, and new dangers.

I’m so freaking excited about this.

What do you think?

Fighting Fate

Fighting Fate (1)

With her blue-black hair and striking green eyes, Cailin Jamenson is the epitome of beauty and the exemplar of strength. She has fought the enforced boundaries of being the lone Jamenson daughter and Redwood Pack princess, but it is the potential future with the dark wolf in her path that threatens everything she thought she desired.

Logan Anderson’s own darkness provided the reasoning for his abandonment of his former Pack, the Talons. Now, newly accepted into the Redwood Pack, this jade-eyed wolf and all she represents could be his own undoing.

In this final installment of the Redwood Pack, unimaginable tragedy strikes, and the two wolves who have fought the longest for their independence now face the uncertainty of fate and the epic battle that could end the war… and their lives.

Excerpt:

Taking a deep breath, she forced her hands to relax. Instead of beating her annoyingly astute brother up, she patted the scarred side of his cheek, something she hadn’t done in the past because of her fear of hurting him. She’d been an idiot, and the lack of touch had only pulled him deeper into himself, away from his family and those that loved him. Now she tried to make sure he knew that she loved him, scars and all.

“Thank you, big brother, but I will not cower.” She refused to. There would be no hiding from the wolf that haunted her dreams…and now her days. She might not want to deal with it, but she wouldn’t run away with her tail tucked between her legs. That wasn’t who she’d been her entire life, and she wouldn’t resort to becoming that person now.

Maddox raised a dark blond brow. “If you won’t let me beat Logan up, or at least maim him a bit, then you’ll have to do something about him.”

Yes, she read as a kid and devoured teen fiction and Harry Potter, but it wasn’t until someone handed her a romance book in her late teens that she realized that there was something out there just for her. When another author suggested she use the voices in her head for good and not evil, The Redwood Pack and all her other stories were born.

In the tradition of Divergent comes a novel about a world where negative emotions are stolen … and only those with fury can stand up and fight.

Eighteen-year-old Josephine Luquet wakes naked and covered in blood that is not hers on the same day every year—when the blood moon is full. Josi has not responded to the “Cure”—an immunization against anger mandated by the government—and believes herself to be a threat to others.

Then she meets Luke. Luke has had the Cure but seems different to the other “drones”—and he’s dead set on helping Josi discover the truth about herself before the next blood moon.

But time is running out. Is Luke willing to risk his life to be near her? Does he truly understand what violence she is capable of?

Raw and full of passion, Fury is a story of love in a dystopian world, and how much we are willing to forgive in the struggle to remember our humanity.

Jennifer’s Review of Fury

Review (4 Stars):  I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this book.  When I first read the synopsis for Fury, I wasn’t sure if I would like it, but this book really caught my attention.  Josephine Luquet is a young woman who hasn’t responded to the Cure, an immunization that strips away the feelings of anger or aggression among the human population. She believes that she is dangerous because of this and that she has killed before. She has found herself naked in the past, covered in blood with no recollection about the events that have transpired from the night before.  This only happens on the night of the Blood Moon which is rapidly approaching and Josi is afraid of what she may do next.

I liked the main character, Josi, and enjoyed reading the story mainly from her perspective.  This book tells the story of Josi from alternating points of view which include Luke, a mysterious stranger that Josi doesn’t want to talk about and Anthony, the therapist that is trying to help Josi by discussing her past. This book had me from the very beginning trying to decipher the pieces of Josi’s situation and determining how much of the story was the truth or just a figment of her imagination. I will warn you that this book ends on a cliffhanger but makes you more determined to read the next book in the series to see what happens next to these characters.

Darkness Falls Excerpt

“It’s not my first time, man.” Interview over, Rook shrugged into his trim black wool coat. “I know what to do if I spot a likely target.” It’d been a few years, but what to look for hadn’t changed.

Innocent, unsuspecting fools.

Yeah, he knew how to find them. And once down the rabbit hole, there was no coming back again. Just a screaming fall into a darkness as infinite and clutching as a nightmare. No waking up, either.

God, why couldn’t he just wake up?

“Only, it’s been a while since you went hunting,” Coll observed, that level gaze assessing, always measuring, but giving away nothing. “Why the sudden change?”

Rook kept his reasons for going to himself; he didn’t owe Coll explanations. Not anymore. What did he know, anyway? Coll had an easy life working behind a desk, occasionally flying out somewhere, and getting himself a swank room from which to monitor at a distance. It was hard not to stare at the wall-to-wall view of the San Diego Bay—and the ocean beyond, vast and calm, restful. Rook wasn’t one to give in to envy, but a little peace would go a long way right now.

“It’s a big step backward from the work you’ve been doing,” Coll pressed.

Rook exchanged his wallet for the one waiting on the tray that Coll had provided—time to become, let’s see, Michael Reese; at least they’d kept his initials—and slid it in the back pocket of his jeans.

Of course, he could’ve explained to Coll that he’d been on the inside too long. That he had to get a taste of the virgin experience again to keep his edge. Any Chimera could relate.

But he was too far gone for easy lies.

Darkness lurked at the edges of his vision, crackling and dense with reproach—not that he could make out anything right now, or ever—but when he turned to confront it, the blind spot shifted, too. It was as if he had a fringe space in the back of his mind, one in which an intruder could hide, its presence hounding him like a constant uncertainty.

Rook had to go out or he’d lose his mind. He had to go out or Coll would have to put him down like a mad dog.

The alternate phone on the tray was a sleek little silver thing, the latest to hit the market, whereas his personal mobile was at least a year behind. Both were unnecessary. He had other ways of keeping current—other, more intimate ways to track his marks.

“You could shave, at least. Make yourself pretty.” Coll’s idea of a joke.

Since he’d decided to back off, Rook offered a dry one of his own. “Girls like me rough. Guys, too, actually.”

***

“Okay, but what if I show up to the party completely naked?” Jordan Lane hissed ahead to Maisie as they navigated down the dock to the water taxi that would take them out to the Envoi, their destination for the evening.

The naked thing had been a nightmare since childhood, most recently the night before her big sales pitch to get the Medea account. Account secured. Promotion pending. But the fear was alive and well. Thriving.

Maisie cocked her head over her shoulder. “Can you at least try to have fun?”

Fun was not crossing a picket line of vehement protesters for a simple girls’ night out. The rhythmic shouts—“Wake up to the truth!”—were audible this far down the pier. The protesters stayed behind the pylons, but Jordan carried their message with her nevertheless: Danger. And, um, what the hell are you doing?

And then there was the opposing throng, who’d come down to the docks in hopes of buying a ticket secondhand for ten times its value. Holy hell, she could really use that kind of money right now and would easily give up one night of girl bonding to get it.

But this wasn’t any old GNO. First, the girlfriend was her little sis (all grown up), and second, the activity was insane, hence the protesters and their waggling signs. But Maisie-Maze had to try everything, had to leap with all her heart into every new game that came along. Irresponsible was what her teachers and bosses called her. But really it was more like irrepressible. There was no stopping her, no reasoning with enthusiasm—what could a big sis do but go with her and make sure she came home all right?

Not that Jordan had any objection to Rêve in theory. She just didn’t want either of them to be part of the practice.

A gust of bitter coastal wind whipped at Jordan’s hair and clothes, and she wrapped her mini tuxedo jacket across her waist, folding her arms over it to keep the cold air off her skin. Didn’t help much; the bluster still stole up the skirt of her little black dress as she waited with the group on the pier, everybody outfitted for a night out and buzzing with excitement. Ages ranged from Maze’s bouncy twenty-one to—Jordan glanced at a wrinkled and shrunken little woman—what had to be close to a hundred. The age spread aligned with the cross-cutting demographics that characterized the Rêve enthusiasm overtaking the world.

Just ahead, Maze accepted the hand of some guy already inside the boat to help her navigate the big, awkward step into the taxi. He reached for Jordan next, and with equal parts reluctance and gratitude, she took his hand—strong, steady—to make sure she didn’t pitch herself ass-up into the ocean. The heels had been a mistake, too.

Who needed to be dressed up only to go to sleep?

“Thanks,” she breathed to him. No going back now.

Petrol-tinged air replaced the slightly funky smell of the water, with its ocean stew of salt, fish, and subtle rot. Taking the big step, she caught a flash of the guy’s dark eyes, dark hair. Strong jaw with a two-day shadow. Once in the boat, she discovered he was tall and built, too. Damn it.

Maze’s eyes were shining with glee, as if saying, See?

Little sis wanted to hook her up. Very sweet, but not happening. Timothy Oliphant from Justified was just fine for her—even if she did have to watch him through her TV screen.

But this guy?

Okay, Jordan argued silently back at her, but there are cute guys lotsa places. She didn’t need to go to such lengths to get a date.

“Nothing to worry about,” he said, noting her nerves.

Of course he had a good, low voice. Didn’t mean he wasn’t crazy. Rêve attracted all sorts. Cults were forming around it. Biggest thing since the Internet. Global phenomenon. Major paradigm shift. And all that.

The wind gusted again and Jordan shivered violently, but she didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to ask questions. She had about a thousand of them. “You’ve done this before, then?”

She’d scoured message boards online for info, but the reactions varied from ecstatic testimonials of transcendent experiences to claims of migraines, sleeplessness, fatigue, and impotence, all basically leading to an inability to return to normal life. Then there were the posts—both academic and hysterical—that warned people not to make gods of themselves. Heh. Too late.

The bottom line? Studies demonstrated conclusively that Rêve itself was safe; whatever side effects did manifest reflected an individual’s psychology. Basically, if a person had issues, maybe they should pass.

At the moment, she had a lot of issues.

“I’ve done it a few times.” The guy glanced between her and her little sister. “Better than drugs. Not as good as sex.”

Hmm. “Anyone ever get hurt?”

“Not that I know of.” Damn if he didn’t seem to settle his interest on her baby sister, his gaze lingering, little wheels of thought turning in his eyes.

Umm…no. He was too…rough for Maze, so he’d just better step back.

Jordan poked his shoulder. Hard. “Did you have side effects?”

He shot her a quick, weird look to the effect of, Would I be back if I did?

“Right.” Jordan ducked her chin out of the wind and headed for Maze, who’d seated herself on the long bench on the far side of the boat. Maze had ironed her hair into a glossy straight sheet that looked like stretched fuchsia taffy. She was a junior at the U, but dressed like a cartoon character from when they’d been kids. She attracted friendly attention everywhere. Here, too.

Jordan joined her on the bench and cut a look back at the man. “Stay away from that one.”

Maze lit up and sang under her breath, “Ooooh?”

No. Jordan wasn’t interested in him, but she couldn’t bring herself to argue with Maze while the swaying of the boat was making her sick. She did manage to reiterate, “If I end up naked in public, I swear I’ll kill you.”

Maze took her hand. “You need this. You need this so bad.”

Her sister referred to the life Jordan spent in the office; what Maze didn’t seem to understand was that her big sis liked her job. Shocking, yes, but true. So this wasn’t about her. It was all Maisie, major still undeclared.

“People have gotten along just fine without Rêve thus far,” Jordan said. “All the way back to the dawn of man.”

Maze’s baby blues opened wide. “Beg to differ, Jor. Theories abound that it is not unique to our time.”

God, baby sis had been drinking the Rêve punch.

“Theories, not facts.” While Jordan had volunteered to go along for the ride, she wasn’t going to get conned into the hype. One of them had to stay grounded.

Her sister smiled and repeated by rote, as she had a thousand times today, “It’s safe. It’s legal.”

Jordan gave a derisive laugh. “Then why are we about to taxi twelve nautical miles into international waters to get on a Finnish ship in order to try it?”

Lay Me Down Excerpt:

Steve Coll hit his left-turn signal and checked for traffic, but most of his attention was focused on the woman half sitting, half kneeling on the passenger seat beside him. She hadn’t yet decided if she was going to cooperate (the least likely), stage a getaway (her usual way of coping), or try to kill him (on direct orders from her boss).

Her predicament was the most fun he’d had in a long time, especially since it was the woman herself who was gnawing her thumbnail in suspense. Even she didn’t know what she was going to do.

What a way to live.

Maisie Louise Lane wasn’t just another Reveler whom Chimera wanted to recruit. She was the ultimate recruit, the critical talent. And it was Steve’s job to secure her cooperation and loyalty.

Which meant she was probably going to try to kill him.

At least he’d get a kick out of watching her work up to it. She might just pull it off, too. Maisie could do anything; it was potentially deadly to think otherwise.

“If we’re going to Vegas,” she said, “I need to pick up some things from my place.”

Steve checked his rearview mirror. Still clear. “Not an option. It was ransacked after you left. Nothing much remains but the scum waiting to grab you.”

“Well, I’ve got some clothes at my sister’s and my laptop is there, too.”

“Your associates have that place covered as well, and since your sister had to drown one of them so that she could get to safety, it’s not an option, either.”

Maisie was standing on the only bridge she hadn’t burned, an empty gallon of gas in one hand, lit match in the other.

He flicked a gaze her way for a quick assessment. Her magenta-dyed hair was showing blond roots. The black makeup around her big gray eyes was smudged. And yeah, she was wearing the same outfit—tight, dark-green jeans with a slouchy black tank on top—that she’d been wearing when she’d escaped his companionship on the UCSD campus yesterday. The several narrow leather bands around her wrist hid scars from wounds she’d inflicted herself.

She had her sister to thank for keeping her alive this long, but the company Maisie kept was now more dangerous. Big sis had done as much as she could. Time for someone who didn’t love Maisie to take over.

“Well, I have to shower and change. I stink,” she said.

Strangely, he really didn’t mind the sharp edge to her usual feminine scent. And at the moment, he wouldn’t put it past her to crawl out a bathroom window, dripping and naked, to escape him. So she could just wait.

“When we get settled, you can have first dibs on the shower.”

Another glance in the rearview. A black car edged into their lane, some five car-lengths behind them.

“You mean in Vegas? That’s like an eight-hour drive.”

“Five,” he corrected. “And new clothes will be waiting there as well.”

“I choose my own clothes, thanks.”

“Your call.”

“This is torture,” she said.

“Agreed.”

The black car kept its distance, which Steve didn’t like. It should’ve pulled up a bit by now. Its front window reflected a bright glaring spot of the sun, whiting out the rest, so no driver was visible, even if Steve could make him out from this far away.

He debated letting the car continue its pursuit to find out for certain if it was deliberately tailing them. He’d been eluding her business associates for the past few days while attempting to win Maisie’s cooperation. That her sister Jordan had become a Chimera was helpful. That those same associates had gone after Jordan had forced a choice on Maisie: family, or wealth and power?

Family had won, which was how Maisie had come to be sitting next to him, regardless of her mood.

Steve cruised through a late yellow light; the black car ran the red that followed.

Damn. Better to lose them now than to chance an incident on the road before he and Maisie reached their destination.

He hated to do it while driving, but fine.

Steve let his vision blur slightly so that his darksight could sharpen, and he imposed a simple waking dream on the real world. He showed the occupants of the black car that his car was turning to the right, down an intersecting street, while in reality he continued straight ahead.

The black car turned down the street, following the dream.

Which meant that yes, the car had probably been following them, and the driver didn’t have the darksight to recognize a waking dream for the illusion it was.

Steve glanced at Maisie again, the other immediate threat to his life.

She was staring at him, unblinking and wary. “What was that?”

Maisie, however, did have darksight, though still undeveloped.

Chimera agents each had talents, most of which were awakened during lucid dreaming, the revolution taking over the world. Maisie, should she prove loyal enough to join them, could also cross between one dream and another effortlessly.

Steve gave her a friendly smile. It was the only answer she was going to get. He didn’t even share what he could do, what he really was, with people he trusted. They’d be afraid.

“Fine. Whatever.” She folded her arms and hunkered down in her seat. “Wake me when we get there.”

Steve had to stop himself from laughing out loud. The humor felt good, though, lodged in his throat and warm across his chest. As if he would let her escape him that way. Her associates could catch up to her Darkside, too.

No. Not happening. She had no idea whom she was dealing with.

Maisie Lane was about to be afflicted with an extreme case of insomnia.

He was keeping her high and dry until it suited him for her to sleep, yet another one of his abilities. She’d sleep when he did.

Beside him, she sighed and modulated her breathing so that it was deep and slow. Eyes closed, the tension dropped out of her. She went quiet, studiously so, as she sought refuge.

It was cute, really.

Steve banked onto the I-15 exit and climbed onto the freeway, heading north. Traffic mid-morning moved fast along the ten-lane stretch. If they made good time, maybe they could get there before rush hour.

A colorful billboard advertising a new Rêve—the term used for commercial shared dreams—rose above the graying buildings below. The billboard depicted a black door with a fanlight above and a knob in the middle. The number 221B gleamed in brass above a subtly ornate knocker. Doors led the way into Rêves, and this door led the dreamer to 221B Baker Street, Sherlock’s home. Stories and adventures were the rage, far exceeding the thrills a theme park could offer. Rêve was a fully immersive experience for which people would pay anything.

Of course, just as Rêves offered unlimited worlds to explore, they also offered innumerable ways to exploit and/or threaten dreamers. It was Chimera’s job to police Rêves and to venture (or track) beyond Rêve into the waters where natural dreaming occurred. A certain kind of talent was required, and it was Steve’s job to recruit the personnel who had it.

Like Maisie here, who’d been playing in illegal Rêves for at least a year now and had gotten in a little too deep with the criminal element.

The minutes ticked by. He changed to the far left lane and accelerated.

Any second now she’d realize she was trapped in the waking world.

She huffed a little. Squirmed.

He restrained a grin, but glanced her way to see if she’d figured it out yet.

He found her looking back at him, a bad mood wrinkling her forehead. Then her forehead smoothed as understanding dawned. A glimmer of horror darkened her eyes. She’s got it now. The realization finished with a steady glare of hate.

“You bastard.”

Steve looked at the road ahead. “Just as long as we understand each other.”
