BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother forty whacks; and when she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty-one….

The people of Fall River, Massachusetts, fear me. Perhaps rightfully so. I remain a suspect in the brutal deaths of my father and his second wife despite the verdict of innocence at my trial. With our inheritance, my sister, Emma, and I have taken up residence in Maplecroft, a mansion near the sea and far from gossip and scrutiny.

But it is not far enough from the affliction that possessed my parents. Their characters, their very souls, were consumed from within by something that left malevolent entities in their place. It originates from the ocean’s depths, plaguing the populace with tides of nightmares and madness.

This evil cannot hide from me. No matter what guise it assumes, I will be waiting for it. With an axe.

REVIEW:
4.75 Hearts “There it was. Yes! I grabbed my ax” Lizzie L Borden.
You thought you knew everything there was to know about Lizzie Borden and her ax…..
You were wrong.
Very very wrong!!
This was my first Cherie Priest novell and the first in her new Borden Dispatches series. There was so much going on in this story are just a few points.
How the story is written: The story is told by multiple points of view: Lizzie Borden, Emma Borden, Nance O’Neil, Dr. Owen Seabury, Professor Phillip Zollicoffer. Each point of view was told to us by their journal entries and the current events of the day, the hour, the minute. It was a very interesting way to write a story. I will say that listening to it was a tad bit confusing at first trying to figure out what was going on and to keep track of dates.
Lizzie Borden: Is not what she seems or maybe in a way she is. Lizzie knows something stirs in the dark, something dark, dangerous and very very deadly. An interesting note about Lizzie, she has a very unconventional relationship with Nance O’Neil (well unconventional for the time period). I loved Lizzie and Nance’s relationship.
Emma Borden: While a loyal sister did get on my nerves as the story went on.
The Evil: Here is where I was left with more questions then answers. I am so confused as to what it was. How it came to be. Is it gone? So many questions.
Listened on Audio: This book was narrated by two people. While the narrators were good, at time the voice tended to run together. Emma and Lizzie sounded a lot a like. Dr. Seabury & Professor Zollicoffer sounded similar. But all in all I enjoyed the narrators.
I can say that I am not normally a fan of non-HEA books but I found myself sucked into the world of Maplecroft. I was sucked into the mystery of Fall River. Sucked into Lizzie Borden’s turmoil in trying to keep everyone safe. I can not wait to see what is next for Lizzie and Fall River.
If you are a fan of Urban Fantasy/Mystery genre you really should pick up a copy of Maplecroft.

#TBT Kimberly’s review of If I Were You by Lisa Renee Jones ~ Catch Up From The Beginning

TITLE: If I Were You
AUTHOR: Lisa Renee Jones
PUBLICATION DATE:   08/24/12
ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
How it began…
One day I was a high school teacher on summer break, leading a relatively uneventful but happy life. Or so I told myself. Later, I’d question that, as I would question pretty much everything I knew about me, my relationships, and my desires. It all began when my neighbor thrust a key to a storage unit at me. She’d bought it to make extra money after watching some storage auction show. Now she was on her way to the airport to elope with a man she barely knew, and she needed me to clear out the unit before the lease expires.

Soon, I was standing inside a small room that held the intimate details of another woman’s life, feeling uncomfortable, as if I was invading her privacy. Why had she let these items so neatly packed, possessions that she clearly cared about deeply, be lost at an auction? Driven to find out by some unnamed force, I began to dig, to discover this woman’s life, and yes, read her journals—-dark, erotic journals that I had no business reading. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. I read on obsessively, living out fantasies through her words that I’d never dare experience on my own, compelled by the three men in her life, none of whom had names. I read onward until the last terrifying dark entry left me certain that something had happened to this woman. I had to find her and be sure she was okay.
Before long, I was taking her job for the summer at the art gallery, living her life, and she was nowhere to be found. I was becoming someone I didn’t know. I was becoming her.

The dark, passion it becomes…
Now, I am working at a prestigious gallery, where I have always dreamed of being, and I’ve been delivered to the doorstep of several men, all of which I envision as one I’ve read about in the journal. But there is one man that will call to me, that will awaken me in ways I never believed possible. That man is the ruggedly sexy artist, Chris Merit, who wants to paint me. He is rich and famous, and dark in ways I shouldn’t find intriguing, but I do. I so do. I don’t understand why his dark side appeals to me, but the attraction between us is rich with velvety promises of satisfaction. Chris is dark, and so are his desires, but I cannot turn away. He is damaged beneath his confident good looks and need for control, and in some way, I feel he needs me. I need him.
All I know for certain is that he knows me like I don’t even know me, and he says I know him. Still, I keep asking myself — do I know him? Did he know her, the journal writer, and where is she? And why doesn’t it seem to matter anymore? There is just him and me, and the burn for more.

REVIEW:
The catchline of this book is “Fifty Shades of Grey meets Basic Instinct” and while I have never seen Basic Instinct I have read Fifty Shades and I can see the comparison of sorts. And since I would normally not compare one book to another the catchline, in and of itself, seems to show the author wants the comparison. If Fifty Shades was a book you enjoyed then this will be too.

Yes, both of the series take place in the BDSM lifestyle but let me say first off this book in the series did not have that introduced until the very end even though I am sure the next two books in the series will add more of that lifestyle in. Where I can see the most comparison is in the characters more than the story itself. At least the characters of the men. Both Christian and Chris are both very haunting and lost characters. There is a background there that we have yet to understand yet they are both so gentle and protective of the women they are with. There is just something that draws them to the reader.

Where the comparison stops is the women. While in Fifty Shades Ana is a innocent who has not known of this lifestyle, Sara has been reading the journal of Rebecca and is finding the lifestyle alluring. But, Sara has more in mind then just the lifestyle, she has become obsessed with making sure that the author is ok and in doing so has thrown herself into the world of art, sex and suspense.

I am sure this book will get a lot of the comparisons I talked about above and so many are going to say the author has jumped on the bandwagon (which I actually thought too before I started reading it) but I want to say that this book would probably have made a big impact itself if it had been released first. And since three books have been written in this series I do wonder how far along the author was already into these books before Fifty Shades even came out. I hesitate to call this book erotica because while parts are erotic there is nothing in it that a contemporary romance doesn’t have depending on the author (once again this is only based on book one), however, there are some pretty steamy sex scenes.

If you are a fan of romance, romantic suspense or erotica you should pick up this book. Will it have the same impact of Fifty Shades in the world? Probably not. Will you enjoy this book as much as Fifty Shades? I would think so (or at least close). Will you recommend it the next time someone says they are done reading Fifty Shades? NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!

Kelly reviews Big Vamp On Campus by Molly Harper

CHARACTERS: Jamie & Ophelia
AUTHOR: Molly Harper
NARRATOR: Amanda Ronconi
RUN TIME: 2 Hours & 36 Minutes
PUBLICATION DATE: June 6, 2016
ORDER LINKS: Amazon  | B&N | Audible

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
You’ve asked for years when Ophelia and Jamie would get their own story and now it’s here! How will Ophelia adjust to living in a dorm room now that she has been banished from the Council and forced to matriculate at college with Jamie? Communal showers! Horrible, pretentious roommates! Humans who try to be FRIENDS! The horror!

REVIEW:
YAY!!!!!! Finally we get to see what makes Ophelia tick. And let me tell you it is very scary and involves duct tape.
I don’t want to give you too much. But this short Half-Moon Hollow story follows the on and only Ophelia and Jamie to college. There is a lot of growing up, human interaction, parties, tears and yes duct tape.
It just amazes me that everytime I pick up one of Molly’s books I fall more in love with her writing, the worlds she creates and her characters. I am always left wanting more. MORE, I tell you!!!
And of course I had to have the uber talented Amanda Ronconi read this book to me (just as she has all the other books). I love that Amanda has lent her amazing talent to Molly’s books. Again, Amanda did an amazing job narrating.

I so can’t wait for the next installment in this series.

#TBT Kelly reviews Served Cold by Marie Harte – Catch Up From The Beginning

AUTHOR: Marie Harte
PUBLICATION DATE: September 15, 2014

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
A little white lie has the power to bring a reformed bad boy to his knees.

Back in high school, Ann Weaver told herself getting ditched by Jack Bloom was for the best. At twenty-nine, she’s way over him. He was her first, but definitely not her last.

On weekly wine night with her friends, the talk turns to regrets—and Ann finds herself pledging to fix her past, starting with confronting those who treated her like dirt. Her first target: Jack, who’s recently moved back to town to stay.

But something’s different. He’s funny, kind, and amazing in bed. He acts like he really likes her, might even love her. Soon Ann is having a hard time remembering she’s only in it for revenge. Especially when she learns the real reason he dumped her.

Jack is older, wiser, and has a hell of a lot of experience behind him. For a chance at a future with this grown-up, gorgeous Ann, he’s ready to do whatever it takes. Until her true motive for rekindling their romance comes to light, and Jack must decide if forgiveness is enough to let love push through the lie.

Warning: A woman who’s out for revenge and encouraging friends rooting her on. May include sex in the outdoors, fun with salad, kissing in class, and a school teacher swearing like a sailor—not necessarily in that order.

REVIEW:
4.75 Hearts The best revenge is served cold or is it served scorching hot??
Well if you ask Ann Weaver the idea of revenge is ice cold and full of getting even against those who hurt her. But when the plan of revenge is put into place, cold is the very last thing that she experiences. To say that Jack Bloom will melt the block of ice that has encased Ann’s broken heart would be a huge understatement.
After finishing another one of Ms. Harte’s series (The McCauley Brothers ) I was super excited when I saw her new Best Revenge series. Served Cold is the first book in this trilogy (I am assuming it is a trilogy because of Terrible Trio). I am so glad that I did pick up this book. Jack and Ann are just great!!! I mean amazing. They are so great together and boy howdy the sexy time is wowza!!!
I loved this book. Loved the cover. This was one sit read for me. I just could not tear myself away from the story. I loved the side characters too!! I so can not wait for the next book in this series. If you are looking a great, quick and hot read you really need to pick up a copy of Served Cold.

Kimberly reviews Free Fall by Rick Mofina

free fallTITLE: Free Fall
SERIES #: Kate Page #4
CHARACTERS: Kate Page
AUTHOR: Rick Mofina
PUBLICATION DATE: 01/01/16

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
CRISIS IN THE SKIES

Pilots with no control…

High above the Adirondack Mountains, a commuter flight to New York City turns into a rolling, twisting nightmare, plunging from the sky before the crew regains control. Then, in London, a jetliner crashes into the runway, killing fifteen people.

Investigators with no answers…

Reporter Kate Page believes something beyond mechanical—or human—error is behind the incidents that have air investigators baffled. But the mystery deepens as teams scramble to pinpoint a link between the tragedies, and Kate receives an untraceable message from someone boasting responsibility and threatening another event.

A looming disaster…

As Kate, the FBI and the NTSB race to find answers, the shadow figures behind the operation launch their most devastating plan yet, and time ticks down on one of the greatest tragedies the world has ever known.

REVIEW:
Rick Mofina does it again. Mofina has a way of pulling you into a story from the first page and not letting go and no matter how long the book is you feel like you can’t get enough and just as all of his others this is no different. This is the 4th in the Kate Page series and while I would always recommend you reading the books in order this book can be read as a stand alone. I would just imagine that you would miss a bit of Kate’s history.

I could certainly imagine this book as a tv show or movie. There is so much truism in it that you can picture it as you read the story in full technicolor detail. Kate is a strong woman who stands up for herself and I enjoy that about her. She is smart and real.

I would highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a good action packed suspense. I can’t imagine anyone would be disappointed in this book or series.

Kelly reviews Allegiance Of Honor by Nalini Singh

allegiance of honorTITLE: Allegiance of Honor

CHARACTERS: Naya
AUTHOR: Nalini Singh
NARRATOR: Angela Dawe
RUN TIME: 15 Hours & 13 Minutes
PUBLICATION DATE: June 14, 2016
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | Audible | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The “unparalleled romantic adventure”* of Nalini Singh’s New York Times bestselling series continues as a new dawn begins for the Psy-Changeling world…
The Psy-Changeling world has undergone a staggering transformation and now stands at a crossroads. The Trinity Accord promises a new era of cooperation between disparate races and groups. It is a beacon of hope held together by many hands: Old enemies. New allies. Wary loners.
But a century of distrust and suspicion can’t be so easily forgotten and threatens to shatter Trinity from within at any moment. As rival members vie for dominance, chaos and evil gather in the shadows and a kidnapped woman’s cry for help washes up in San Francisco, while the Consortium turns its murderous gaze toward a child who is the embodiment of change, of love, of piercing hope: A child who is both Psy…and changeling.
To find the lost, protect the vulnerable—and save Trinity—no one can stand alone. This is a time of loyalty across divisions, of bonds woven into the heart and the soul, of heroes known and unknown standing back to back and holding the line. But is an allegiance of honor even possible with traitors lurking in their midst?

REVIEW:
I loved this book!!!! Allegiance of Honor was not at all what I expected from Ms. Singh. Normally, we have a new budding romance. Allegiance of Honor doesn’t have that but it has so much more. We get to catch up many of the couples we have grown to love. I personally love all the Judd (he is my all time favorite) time. It was great to see the kids growing. To see Naya finally shift. To get to see how much Dark River and Snow Dance have truly become a family. To get to finally find out what the Pupcubs are going to be!!!
Some people are going not like this book because of all the facts I just named. There was not a lot of new action in Allegiance of Honor, but it laid the foundation for another major change that is going to be coming to the world.
As I said, I loved this story. Love this whole series!!!! And I can not wait for the next installment in this series.
As always I let the amazingly talented Angela Dawe read this story to me. I love that she is so beyond talented with the range of voices she is able to produce. When you combine a great storyteller with an excellent narrator you get amazing results!!!!

SERIES #: Callahan & McLane #4
CHARACTERS: Mason Callahan & Ava McLane
AUTHOR: Kendra Elliot
PUBLICATION DATE: June 7, 2016
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
All Detective Mason Callahan wanted was a quiet fishing trip with the guys—a chance to get away and unwind before Halloween.

Until he finds the body of his boss, Denny Schefte, near their remote Oregon cabin. Now all he wants is to catch the sadist who slit Denny’s throat and covered his face with a mask. Mason was the last person to see him alive and will stop at nothing to find his friend’s murderer.

When the FBI learns of the mask left at the scene, they realize they have a serial killer on their hands—one who is targeting cops. They assign the case to Special Agent Ava McLane, despite her engagement to Mason. Barely recovered from her own nearly fatal injury and her sister’s attempted suicide, Ava hopes she is ready to chase another killer.

But as she delves into the increasingly disturbing case, the killer may be closer than expected—dangerously close.

REVIEW:
4.75 Hearts I loving reading a book from an author from the Pacific Northwest. And what is even better is when it takes place in a town that I am very familiar with. I adore Kendra Elliot’s stories. I have loved Mason and Ava from day one. I do really wish that she would just give them a HEA and let them be……. But what fun would that be and that would just mean no more books for me. So keep throwing these two into sketchy situations.
Targeted starts out in the small coastal town of Depot Bay Oregon (which I drove through right after I started reading Targeted (Add pix collage)) and everything goes to hell in a handbasket from there. What should have been a fun filled boys weekend ends with a murder investigation. With the murderer running loose in Oregon how many will die before the figure out who they are.
Ms. Elliot had me on the edge of my set with wonder as to how she was going to make it all work out. There were a few teary moments that I feared the worst for a few of my favorite characters in this series.
I can’t wait to see what is next in this series and beyond excited that we have a new Kendra Elliot series coming soon.

CHARACTERS: Amy, Peter, Alicia and the survives of First Colony
AUTHOR: Justin Cronin
PUBLICATION DATE: May 24, 2016

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
In “The Passage” and “The Twelve”, Justin Cronin brilliantly imagined the fall of civilization and humanity’s desperate fight to survive. Now all is quiet on the horizon but does silence promise the nightmare’s end or the second coming of unspeakable darkness? At last, this bestselling epic races to its breathtaking finale.

“The world we knew is gone. What world will rise in its place?”

The Twelve have been destroyed and the hundred-year reign of darkness that descended upon the world has ended. The survivors are stepping outside their walls, determined to build society anew and daring to dream of a hopeful future.

But far from them, in a dead metropolis, he waits: Zero. The First. Father of the Twelve. The anguish that shattered his human life haunts him, and the hatred spawned by his transformation burns bright. His fury will be quenched only when he destroys Amy – humanity’s only hope, the Girl from Nowhere who grew up to rise against him.

One last time light and dark will clash, and at last Amy and her friends will know their fate.

REVIEW:
How do you say goodbye to such a significant part of your literary life? With a heavy, but full heart. I have waited many years for the final installment of the series that first captivated me in 2011. After countless readings and recommendations, the end has finally come. From the second chapter of The Passage, I knew this series was going to be amazing, and over the course of 5 years Cronin has not disappointed. City of Mirrors has everything we love about this series: amazing character development, detailed scene building, passion, heartbreak, loss and fulfillment.

As with the previous installments, this book spans hundreds of years and answers almost every question you’ve ever had about what happened to the world we all knew. I will say there were portions of the book I struggled with, but understood that Cronin does not waste words. Literally, every single word, every single detail serves a purpose. That purpose is not always apparent right away, but my goodness are they are worth it. As with any fantastic series, it is always sad when the final book arrives. However, this series is living and vibrant and will continue to live on through years of re-reading and recommending. It is my favorite series of all time. When you pick it up, you will be unable to put it back down.

REVIEW:
What a way to end a trilogy.
The Passage trilogy has been such an emotional journey for me. I have loved every page of this series.
If you have not read The Passage (bk1) and The Twelve (bk2) you have to read this series in order.
The City of Mirrors picks up three years after the events of The Twelve. We finally learn what happened to Amy. We get to see Peter in the role of leader. Michael finally figures out what his role is in the world. Alicia will break your heart. Sara and Hollis will find strength in each other. We have to prepare for a showdown that could cost the world everything.
I had a hard time writing this review without giving up anything. But Mr. Cornin took us on a crazy emotional journey that made me tear up multiple times. I was not sure what I was expecting with the final book in this series but there were a lot of twists and turns that I did not expect.
If you are new to this series start at book one! If you are a fan already hold onto your hat because the end is here.

#TBT Kimberly’s review of Beside A Dreamswept Sea by Vicki Hinze – Catch Up From The Beginning

 Beside A Dreamswept Sea
AUTHOR: Vicki Hinze
PUBLICATION DATE:   12/23/11
ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Welcome to the third book of The Seascape Trilogy, three mystical romance-mystery novels by bestselling author Vicki Hinze.
New love isn’t on the agenda for widower Bryce Richards, who comes to the peaceful Seascape Inn with his three children, hoping the ethereal setting will help them recover from the death of their mother. Likewise, fellow inn guest Callie isn’t looking for romance either; she’s recovering from an emotionally abusive marriage. It will take all the matchmaking skills of innkeeper Hattie Stillman and her ghostly assistant to bring Bryce and Cally together.

REVIEW:
Once again visiting the Seascape Inn was just as delightful and moving as with the rest of the trilogy. The Seascape Inn is a magical and healing inn that makes you long to visit. This should be in the category of a timeless romance. Everyone should read this trilogy at some point in their lives.

This story as with the others of the trilogy read like a movie. You feel taken into another world and it consumes you when you read it. I wish these books would be made into a movie for The Lifetime Channel or something. As with the other books I sit here trying to describe the book but it is more than a read it is a feeling and it is hard to describe the feeling I get from this book. I think everyone who loves romances should read this book/trilogy. This trilogy will be the one that stays with you forever and will become the first book you recommend when someone asks for a new author. So many of the stories now are about sex but these stories are about love and romance… true romance. The romance of people and a place. These books are perfectly written and I wish they would have gone on forever. It is sad to know this is the last of the Seascape Inn and I hope the author changes her mind and writes more now that these have been reissued.

dark alphas demandTITLE: Dark Alpha’s Demand
SERIES #: Reapers #3
CHARACTERS: Talin & Neve
AUTHOR: Donna Grant
PUBLICATION DATE: May 17, 2016
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
There is no escaping a Reaper. I am an elite assassin, part of a brotherhood that only answers to Death. And when Death says your time is up, I am coming for you…
My secret is an ancient one. I exist to exact vengeance on the Fae for their wrongs per Death’s orders. When I’m sent as a spy to one of the most treacherous, deceitful places in any realm – the court of the Light Queen – things go awry. Neve captured my soul with just a look from her seductive gaze. She is who I want, who I crave…who I hunger for. But someone has set out to kill her – and expose me. I’ll destroy any man – human or Fae – who brings harm to her, for she is the light my soul can’t risk losing.

REVIEW:
And the plot thickens!!! I really enjoyed this story. With each Reaper book we are drawn more and more into the world of Reapers, Fae and the Dragon Kings. I truly love how closely related these two series are. I am wondering with 4 more Reaper books to come and at least 4 more Dragon King’s books how are these to fractions going to work together to stop the Dark. Crap….. I might have said too much.

Talin and Neve’s story was great. I think so far this is my favorite book in the Reaper’s series. It was awesome to see Bran finally rattled. But the events at the end of Dark Alpha’s Demand broke my heart.

I can’t wait to see what and who is next in this series. I can’t wait to see how the Reapers and the Kings finally realize that they need each other. And Rhi, of course I can’t wait to see what is next for our favorite Light Fae.

Kelly reviews The Passage by Justin Cronin

PassageTITLE: The Passage
SERIES #: The Passage #1
CHARACTERS: Amy, Wolgast and the people of First Colony
AUTHOR: Justin Cronin
PUBLICATION DATE: June 8, 2010
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | Audible | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
An epic and gripping tale of catastrophe and survival, The Passage is the story of Amy—abandoned by her mother at the age of six, pursued and then imprisoned by the shadowy figures behind a government experiment of apocalyptic proportions. But Special Agent Brad Wolgast, the lawman sent to track her down, is disarmed by the curiously quiet girl and risks everything to save her. As the experiment goes nightmarishly wrong, Wolgast secures her escape—but he can’t stop society’s collapse. And as Amy walks alone, across miles and decades, into a future dark with violence and despair, she is filled with the mysterious and terrifying knowledge that only she has the power to save the ruined world.

REVIEW:
This was my second read/listen of The Passage. With book 3 City of Mirrors upon us (May 2016) a reread was very necessary.
The Passage is one of my all time favorite books and one I would recommend to everyone. When I first picked up this story I was all about the HEA and didn’t read anything that didn’t have a HEA. The Passage and Mr. Cronin showed me that not every story can have a HEA. Sometimes life gets in the way and tests you at every turn.

It is safe to say that I love this book just as much the second time around as I did the 1st time. Amy, Peter, Alicia, Sara, Michael and Hollis are some of my most favorite characters ever. You root for them on every page.

I don’t want to go into to many details about this story because I want you to experience for yourself. But The Passage is an epic journey of the post apocalyptic world and the humans that are bound and determined to survive it.

If you have not read this story yet. You really need to read it. Trust me!!!
