REVIEW:
5+ HEARTS Sometime you get to the last chapter of a book and think “Should I keep reading/listening or do I want one more minute, hour, day, or week?”. That is how I felt with Archangel’s Legion. It was like saying goodbye to a good friend that you know you won’t see for a whole year. I am so in love with Nalini’s Guild Hunter’s series I hope that she never stops writing. I serious love everything about this book. Raphael & Elena are just beyond awesome together. Raphael’s 7 are just flat out amazing. I so can’t wait for Nalini to write Illium’s book, I so love Bluebell!!!
I had the great honor to listen to this. I have listened to all of the Guild Hunter books on audio and total love Justine Eyre. I really enjoyed how many voices she is able to do with each being so distinct. You always know who is talking without her telling you. I am beyond excited to see what Nalini has in store for us next and very excited for Justine to tell me the story.
If you are new to Nalini’s Guild Hunter series. You have to start with book 1 there is no wiggle room on this one. All the books are so interwoven that you would be lost with out the history of each book. If you love audio books I would highly suggest giving the Guild Hunter series a spin.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Cursed By Destiny by Cecy Robson

cursed_by_destiny_revised

Celia Wird and her three sisters are just like other 20-something girls—with one tiny exception: they’re products of a backfired curse that has given each of them unique powers that make them, well, weird…

Celia’s a girl in trouble. Her heart is bound to Aric, but he is a pureblood were who must deny her or risk condemning his species to extinction. And that’s just her love life. She’s also been called to take down a group of demon terrorists looking to overthrow the paranormal world. (No pressure.)

In order to bring them down, Celia must ally herself to Misha, the master vampire who has made no secret of his desire for her.

And if that weren’t enough misfortune for one girl, a clairvoyant’s prediction could destroy Celia and Aric’s love for good. The only way to protect the world from unbridled supernatural terrorism is for Celia to bind herself to her destined mate. And that doesn’t appear to be Aric…

Jennifer’s Review of Cursed By Destiny

Review (5 Stars):  In this book, Celia is still dealing with the heartbreak of losing Aric and has been staying as a platonic house guest with master vampire, Misha.  After the events of A Cursed Embrace, Celia and her sisters have been worried about a possible retaliation from the supernatural Tribemasters that reeked havoc in their world. The only safe place for Celia is with Misha, even though her ex-boyfriend, Aric, isn’t happy with this living arrangement.  What they soon find out is that something unspeakable is hunting Celia and wants her dead and will stop at nothing to make sure that happens.  Even if it means destroying the people that she cares about along the way.

I LOVE this series and I can’t say enough wonderful things about the Weird sisters.  This book picks up right after the heart-wrenching ending of A Cursed Embrace which just about killed me.  I still want to smack Aric over the head because he belongs with Celia and now is days away from marrying another woman to appease his Elders.  Celia is such a wonderful character to me, strong, smart, loving and at times vulnerable.  She is so good at protecting the people around her but can’t seem to find the same happiness that her sisters have found in the love department.  Cecy Robson does a great job of portraying that emotional heartbreak and it makes me love Celia all the more.

Cursed By Destiny is an exciting installment to the already amazing Weird Sisters series.  Cecy Robson has done a wonderful job creating this  fascinating paranormal world that will make you fall in love with her characters and have you wanting more after finishing the last page of her books.  If you haven’t read her books, you are missing out because this is an author to watch.  Can’t wait to read the next book in her series and I’m sad to say it won’t be out soon enough for me.

Jennifer’s Review of A Cursed Moon

Review (5 Stars): In this novella, Bren has joined Aric’s pack and is finding it slightly difficult to adjust to pack life.  He constantly calls Aric names and taunts him about Celia at every turn which hasn’t really gone over too well with his new Alpha.  In his spare time, Bren hangs with the only people that he truly cares about: Dan and The Wird Sisters.  During a visit with Celia, they are both attacked by evil spirits that have been summoned by a witch and it is now their job to put a stop to her.  If they can’t find her and destroy her, the evil spirits will take over the town and try to kill as many people as possible, including the people Bren cares about most.

In the Weird Girls series, Bren has always been in the background and we never really knew much about him until now.  We finally learn his back story and how he met his best friend, Dan.  Bren, at times is an absolute jerk and will stick his foot in his mouth at the wrong time which has gotten him into a bit of trouble.  But he is a good friend and will fight until his last dying breath to protect the people that he loves which makes me adore him all the more. I want him to be my new book boyfriend because he is definitely the guy that I want to have on my side in any kind of fight.  Unless it is with Aric, then I’m going to get as far away from Bren as possible.

I love this series and I can’t wait to read Cursed by Destiny which continues the story of the Wird Sisters after the events of A Cursed Embrace.  Cecy Robson is such a talented writer and each one of her books are action-packed thrill rides with such amazing characters. I adore Ms. Robson and I’m looking forward to reading more of her books in the future.

Book Spotlight: Poisoned Web by Crista McHugh

Poisonedweb

The fate of the empire hangs on one slave breaking her silence…

As the Deizian Empire prepares for the upcoming wedding of Emperor Titus Sergius Flavus and Azruha, one mystery remains unsolved—the sudden and unexplained death of the former emperor. And as her wedding gift to Titus, Azurha wants to give him answers. She suspects an unknown poison was involved, and her search for the truth enlists two unlikely allies.

Modius Varro’s thirst for knowledge caused an uproar in Emona three years ago and exiled him to the border town of Madrena. But when Titus falls victim to the same poison, his expertise in medicine becomes essential in solving both the riddle of the former emperor’s death and finding a cure to save the current one. His search leads him to far reaches of the Alpirion realm, to an ancient culture shrouded in secrets, and into the arms of one slave who must break her silence to save the empire.

Jennifer’s Review of Poisoned Web

Review (5 Stars): I loved Tangled Web and this book picks up right after the events of the first one.  Azruha has settled into life as Emperor Titus’s future bride and knows that his father did not die from natural causes.  Because of her experiences as “The Rabbit,” she believes that the Emperor’s father was killed by poison and decides to enlist her trusted slave, Izana to help solve the mystery.  Izana joins forces with Modius, a gifted scholar and son of the mysterious Varro, to determine who poisoned the previous emperor and stop them from trying to kill Titus.  Besides finding answers to this dangerous mystery, the two find that they can’t help being attracted to one another and the dangers that their love may face in the Deizian empire.

I really enjoyed Poisoned Web and Ms. McHugh was able to weave such a thrilling story of action, suspense and romance that will have you wanting more.  I loved Izana’s character and sympathized with her struggles of being a slave and falling in love with a man that was considered above her station.  The fact that she was able to read and write were punishable offenses in the Deizian empire and being a royal slave was better than the life she lived before working for the Emperor.  Modius was a mysterious character for me because he was once a soldier but now a scholar and I was curious as to what secrets he was hiding from everyone, including Izana.  They just fit well as a couple and their search for the deadly poison captivated me until the end.

Poisoned Web is an great sequel to Tangled Web and you should definitely read them in order.  I love Crista McHugh’s stories and I look forward to each book when it is released.  I can’t wait to read more about the Deizian empire in Deception’s Web and see what happens to the characters in the next installment of this great series.

Jennifer reviews The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

the naturalsTITLE: The Naturals
SERIES #: The Naturals #1
CHARACTERS: Cassie, Michael and Dean
AUTHOR: Jennifer Lynn Barnes
PUBLICATION DATE: 11/05/13
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Seventeen-year-old Cassie is a natural at reading people. Piecing together the tiniest details, she can tell you who you are and what you want. But, it’s not a skill that she’s ever taken seriously. That is, until the FBI come knocking: they’ve begun a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers to crack infamous cold cases, and they need Cassie.

What Cassie doesn’t realize is that there’s more at risk than a few unsolved homicides – especially when she’s sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own. Soon, it becomes clear that no one in the Naturals program is what they seem. And when a new killer strikes, danger looms close. Caught in a lethal game of cat and mouse with a killer, the Naturals are going to have to use all of their gifts just to survive.

REVIEW:
Cassie lost her mother to a killer and has been haunted by that memory ever since. She also has the gift of being able to get into a person’s head and determine things about them just by looking at them. This talent gets her noticed by the FBI and they soon recruit her to be a part of a teenage task force known as The Naturals. The Naturals each have a different skill involving perception that helps agents solve cases and find the identity of killers that have eluded them. To Cassie, this means everything because there is one case that she has always wanted to find answers to, the unsolved murder of her mother and now a copycat killer is trying to finish what was started so long ago.

I loved the premise of this book when I first heard about it and The Naturals had me hooked from the very beginning. I loved Cassie and I could feel her initial apprehension about joining this group but I wouldn’t have been able to turn down an opportunity such as this either. The Naturals was an amazing thrill ride of suspense that made it hard for me to put down. I loved the dual viewpoints where the reader was able to see things through Cassie’s eyes as well as the killer’s eyes and knowing that made the book even more exciting. This was an intriguing story with engaging characters that has made me a permanent fan of of Ms. Barnes and hopeful that the sequel in this series is just as thrilling as The Naturals.

Jennifer reviews Barefoot by the Sea by Roxanne St. Claire

barefootTITLE: Barefoot by the Sea
SERIES #: Barefoot Bay #4
CHARACTERS: Tessa Galloway and John Brown
AUTHOR: Roxanne St. Claire
PUBLICATION DATE: 10/29/13
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS: Tessa Galloway is a gifted nurturer–her verdant garden at Barefoot Bay’s new resort is living proof. If only the woman who can grow anything could grow what she wants most: a baby. Her friends think the right guy will come along, but Tessa doesn’t want to wait. All she needs is the perfect donor to make her dream come true. Then John Brown is hired at the resort. If anyone could make beautiful babies, it’s this gorgeous, mysterious man. So why does Tessa suddenly find herself wanting so much more?

It’s been three long years since John Brown had to leave his old life. Forced into the witness protection program, he’s desperate to be reunited with his toddler twins. When he gets the chance, there’s a catch–he must prove he’s got a steady job and a new wife. Landing a gig as a chef in Barefoot Bay is easy enough. And falling for lovely Tessa is even easier. The hard part? Can he win the heart of a woman who prizes honesty–when the truth may shatter it?

REVIEW: I fell in love with the characters in this book especially the four women who run the Casa Blanca resort in Barefoot Bay. Each of these lovely women have found their happy ending except for Tessa, who is the gardener for the beautiful resort. She has decided after heartbreak and betrayal, all she wants is to have a baby and is desperately looking for a donor to help those dreams come true. In walks John Brown, a sexy man that immediately attracts Tessa’s attention but has secrets of his own. He is on the run from his past and looking for a place to call home until he can retrieve his children from protective custody. When the two meet, sparks fly but they soon find very quickly that they both want two very different things in life. But John has to build a life in Barefoot Bay if he wants any chance of being reunited with his children and being around Tessa makes him want more out of life than just barely surviving.

Tessa was such a great character in this book. She wanted to have a child after suffering from heartbreak and was already in the process of making that happen. She was looking for a donor and to her surprise, the perfect man walked into her life and wanted to work as the new chef at Casa Blanca. She hated secrets because they only led to pain and John was holding quite a few secrets from Tessa because he didn’t want to fall in love with her and then end up leaving her.

John had been through so much after losing his wife and having his children go into protective custody. He wanted to start a new life but meeting Tessa wasn’t something that he planned on. She was everything that he wanted but he was afraid to love again especially if he had to leave to get his children and never return. I was irritated with him toward the middle of this book because he should have told Tessa about his previous life instead of creating more lies that were bound to be discovered. Especially when it came to telling her his real name was Ian. He redeemed himself by the end of the book but there was a point there that I wanted to smack him for Tessa’s sake.

Barefoot by the Sea was a wonderful novel that had me wanting to visit the beautiful Barefoot Bay and spending time with Ms. St. Claire’s characters. I loved Tessa’s and Ian’s story and I can’t wait to read the rest in the series especially the new spinoff series involving the new wedding planners.

Kelly reviews Darkness Rises by Dianne Duvall

darkness risesTITLE: Darkness Rises
SERIES #: Immortal Guardians
CHARACTERS: Etienne & Krysta
AUTHOR: Dianne Duvall
NARRATOR: Kristen Potter
PUBLICATION DATE: Oct 1, 2013
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N  | Audible

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Krysta is used to getting the drop on vampires. Her “special abilities” aren’t much, but the plan is simple–she plays helpless pretty young thing to lure them in. Then her shoto swords come out and it’s bye-bye, bloodsucker. Until one night she finds herself with an unexpected ally. He’s a vampire, all right, but different. Mysterious. Handsome. And more interested in saving her skin than draining it.

Etienne has been an Immortal Guardian for two hundred years–long enough to know that Krysta is special. He can’t stop thinking about her long legs, even more than her short swords. Then he discovers the vamps she’s exterminating have friends in high places, and the Guardians are in danger too. He’ll have to accept Krysta’s help to save them. The stakes for a mortal are high. But the cost to his heart might be higher.

REVIEW:
Immortal Guardians are suppose to protect the humans from the threat of vampires. But what is an Immortal Guardian suppose to do when a human takes it upon themselves to fight vampires? Well be amazed, a little shocked and a whole lot intrigued. Well that is if you are Etienne and you just happen to stumble upon Krysta kicking some serious vampire butt!!

Etienne & Krysta make an awesome couple. They are so much fun yet fierce. They both love to fight, to protect and to keep their loved ones safe. Together they are stronger than ever. But the only problem is that Krysta is human and Etienne is Immortal. But neither seem to care about that. That is until Krysta almost gets herself killed during a battle.
But this is not the only threat that the Immortal Guardians have. A threat from the past has raised it’s heads and this time the stakes are even higher.

I am totally in love with Dianne Duvall’s Immortal Guardians. They are all so dreamy and kick a$$. Darkness Rises is an amazing book. I had the great pleasure of reviewing this book for Tantor Media. I love Kirsten Potter as a narrator. Kirsten is amazing and reading the story to you. It feels like she is telling the story not reading. By this I mean that if never feels like she is just reading words. Kirsten is in gulfed in the story. She makes you feel like you are there in the middle of the action. And the voices!!! Dang this girl is talented with voices. If you love audio books and love Dianne I would recommend picking up a copy of any of the Immortal Guardian books. All 4 are narrated by Kirsten and all are fabulous.

REVIEW:
You know you love a book when you stay up until 1:30 am reading after being up since 5:30 am and having to wake up at 6am the next morning. Yes that is how much I loved Black and Blue. How can you not love this book.
Let’s start with the cover: amazingly gorgeous!!
The Hero: Tall+ tattooed + brooding + famous + football player + lady killer + violet eyes = YUMMY with an edge of if you mess with me I can kill you with a thought.
The Heroine: Dark + mysterious + fierce + determined + closed off + has a thing for poisons = a lady you don’t ever want to mess with and always hope is on your side.
In short this book was AWESOME!!!!

I really want to go on and on about this story. But I try not to do spoilers in my reviews. So let’s just say I loved Blue & Evie’s story. These two are so beyond perfect for each other it is not funny. This story will tug on so many of your heart strings. We learn so much about Blue and Evie. Blue & Evie are a great example of never judge a person without walking in their shoes. So loved this book. I am looking forward to the next book in this story. I don’t want to say excited because of what happens in this books but a serious case of anxiety has set in for John’s book.

Cold Blooded Blog Tour and Giveaway

Cold-Blooded-blog-tour-badg

I love the Jessica McClain series and I have the talented Amanda Carlson here to discuss her third book in the series, Cold Blooded.

1. Tell me about your new release Cold Blooded.

It’s full of non-stop action and adventure. If you’re waiting to see what happens to Jess & Rourke you won’t be disappointed! It picks up right were HOT BLOODED left off.

2. Where did you come up with the idea for Jessica and her family?

The first scene of the book played out like a movie clip in my head.  It all went from there.  Once she was done shifting, I knew she had a family who loved her.  Those family ties were really important to me.  Jessica is not a dark twisted heroine, she’s well rooted and it helps her navigate the major changes in her life.

3. What kind of research did you have to do for this series?

I do minimal research, except for the mythological beings in the book.  I love bringing true myth and history in when I can.  Eudoxia was actually the name of Ivan the Terrible’s daughter in history.  Selene is the real name of the Lunar Goddess in myth.  Lots of my beasties are from myth as well.  Try googling some of them!

4. Do you have any influence over choosing the covers of your books?  The cover model for Jessica is perfect.

I gave them physical descriptions, but I didn’t have any say.  They did a great job with the covers.  I feel very lucky.

5. What are you working on now?

I’m working on more books in the series, as well as some “sekrit” projects! Stay tuned.  The best place for updates and info on the “up and coming” from me is my author facebook page.

6. Do you envision any actors playing your characters while you are writing?

No, in fact I’m super bad at that game when anyone asks!  Each character is really a conglomeration of looks, characteristics and voice all melded into one.  Honestly, I like it better that way.  Each reader should be able to substitute their favorites in for any of the characters.

7. Any advice for aspiring writers?

Keep going! This business is all about hard work and persistence.  You have to finish the book first.  After that you keep editing and querying.  Then, while you’re querying, start something new.  Don’t put all your eggs into one basket and keep writing.  Always keep writing.

Thanks for having me on the blog! Super excited for COLD BLOODED to release next week.

About the Author:

amanda-carlsonI’m a Minnesota girl, born and bred. I started writing stories about teenage girls and their social missteps when I was in high school. I still have the handwritten spiral notebooks to prove it.

I started writing in earnest after my second child was born. After purchasing our first computer, I thought to myself, what better way to spend my time than e-mailing unsuspecting family members super cute stories about my exceptionally darling children? Isn’t that what computers were made for anyway?

The writer in me stretched and gave a defiant shove. I was hooked.

I jumped into writing classes, joined local writing chapters, organized author book signings, joined critique groups and participated in conferences. I had a blast writing a column in a local food & wine publication, and eventually tied together all my parenting stories into one full compilation.

My first fiction attempt was a contemporary romance, but I couldn’t seem to find the story. After my kids starting bringing home YA urban fantasy, I suddenly knew where my passion for fiction writing had been hiding. It was inside the action packed pages of an Urban Fantasy novel. Reading each new series was so much fun, I quickly realized this genre brought something to the storyline I hadn’t really seen before. It brought a hefty shot of adrenaline combined with a side of female kickass, all combined with that element of “other” I found so intriguing.

After reading YA, I picked up every adult UF I could get my hands on and I’ve been fully immersed in this genre ever since. On occasion I still pick up a “regular” book. But for the most part I find them lacking in superpowers and the excitement of the unexpected.

I started FULL BLOODED because kickass heroines rock and I love shifters of all kinds. There aren’t enough warm-blooded girls to go around, in my opinion. I fell into Jessica’s story and had such a great time writing it. I couldn’t imagine writing anything other than urban fantasy now.

When you’re creating a story in this fantastic genre, it can contain almost any elements you can dream up. Creatively, for me, there’s nothing better.

Now I think it’s about time to share it with all of you.

BOOK SYNOPSIS: Jessica McClain is on the run…again.  Finally reunited with Rourke, Jessica arrives home to find that her best friend has been kidnapped, her father has vanished, and the supernatural Sects–witches, demons, and sorcerers–don’t even have the courtesy to wait until she is unpacked to attack.

Now, mastering her powers as the sole female werewolf might not be enough to save them.  Thrown together in a shaky truce with the Vampire Queen, Jessica must show all the different Sects what the true meaning of “the enemy of my enemy” is or her father will die.

REVIEW PROVIDED BY: Jennifer            NUMBER OF STARS: Five Stars

REVIEW: This book is the third in the Jessica McClain series and each book keeps getting better and better.  Cold Blooded picks up right after the events of Hot Blooded and Jessica finds herself on the run from demons and sorcerers while looking for her missing best friend, Marcy.  Jessica and Rourke are now finally together and looking forward to spending some quality time with one another.  But all that has to be put on hold when Jessica is summoned to the Vampire Queen’s home in New Orleans to serve a debt that they owe her and along the way bring an all-out war among paranormal beings to her doorstep.  Jessica has to then side with the Vampire Queen to protect the people that she cares about before it is too late.

I have to say that this is one of my favorite series and I look forward to reading every book when it comes out.  Jessica is such a great kick-ass heroine who is still coming to terms with her new supernatural powers and has finally been reunited with her mate, Rourke.  There is non-stop action from the very first page and the story is so well-written that you feel like you’re watching a movie instead of reading a book.  I absolutely love this series and all of its characters and I can’t wait to see what Amanda Carlson comes up with next.

Interview and Review with Gretchen McNeil

Untitled-7.indd

A year ago, my friend Stacee from Adventures of a Book Junkie, sent a book from a new author that she absolutely loved.  That book was Ten by Gretchen McNeil.  I stayed up all night reading it because it was complex, thrilling and I couldn’t wait to see how it ended.  Once I knew Gretchen was coming out with a new book, I jumped at the chance to interview her.  Thankfully, she said yes to answer some of my questions here on Books-n-Kisses today.

1. Tell me about your new release 3:59.

3:59 sci-fi doppelganger horror (that’s a genre, right?) about two girls who are the same girl in parallel universes, who discover that their worlds connect every twelve hours for exactly one minute at 3:59. When they decide to switch places, all hell breaks loose. Literally.

2. Where did you come up with the idea for this book?

This sounds so cliche’, but I was driving home from work one day, and there was a traffic light turning red.  I had a split second to decide: gun it or slam on the brakes. I braked, because I’m ever so responsible like that, then spend the rest of the time at the stop light wondering what would have happened if I hadn’t stopped.  The idea grew in my head as I drove home, the idea that there would be two girls who are the same girl but in parallel universes, living out similar but different lives.  While I was waking the dog, I started asking myself questions: What happens if these two girls meet? What happens if they switch places? The moment I got home, I emailed my agent.

3. I loved your book, Ten, and I was wondering what got you into writing suspense/horror YA?

I wanted to write the kind of books I loved to read as a teen.  I wasn’t exactly a Sweet Valley High kind of girl.  I read Victorian ghost stories, gothic novels, mysteries and of course,  Christopher Pike.  Kind of jumble all that together, and I think that is my writing style!

4. When you write your characters, do you envision a particular actor for each character?

No. In fact, personality comes first for me, and the physical characterization grows from that.  Once the book is done, it’s very rare that I picture an actual actor playing one of my roles.  For example, the only actor I pictured for TEN was Elle Fanning as Minnie.

5. As a writer, who has had the biggest influence on you?

Agatha Christie

6. What are you working on now?

Next up is GET EVEN, the first book in the Don’t Get Mad series, due out in Fall 2014. I pitched this book as “John Hughes with a body count” which meant I got to write a lot of funny dialogue, but still murder people.

GET EVEN is about four girls at a private school who come from totally different social strata: the student leader, the A student, the drama queen, the loner punk.  Publicly, they aren’t friends. Privately, they’ve formed a secret society (Don’t Get Mad, or DGM for short) where they execute revenge missions against bullies, mean girls, and teachers who have wronged their classmates.  It goes well until one of their targets turns up dead and DGM is implicated in the murder.  The girls don’t know if one of them is the killer, or if someone else knows their secret, and they have to find out what which before someone else turns up dead.

7. What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Finish the damn book.

I know that sounds trite, but too often, I hear about authors who just jump from project to project, never finishing a novel.  You have to finish it.  HAVE TO.  That’s the only way you can improve, and the only way you can move forward in publishing!

REVIEW: I am always amazed at how Gretchen McNeil comes up with these brilliant ideas for books that leave me spellbound for hours.  Her new novel, 3:59, tells the story of Josie Byrne, whose life is falling apart after discovering that her boyfriend, Nick, cheated on her with her own best friend.  In the middle of all this, strange occurrences seem to be happening to her at home, where she is experiencing dreams of a girl that is exactly like her.  Same name, same life except to Josie everything seems perfect for her other self.  These glimpses into this alternate world happen every 12 hours at 3:59 and Josie makes plans to trade lives for just one day to experience how things would be if they were perfect.  Once Josie gets her wish, she is faced with a deadly reality and her hopes for returning home are smashed with the ultimate act of betrayal.

I liked Josie because I felt for her when she discovered that Nick was cheating on her and she seemed to be the last person in her school to know. That heartbreak and embarrassment is horrible as a teenager and I could see her wanting a break even if it was just for 24 hours. Once, she changes worlds, she learns that everything that looked so wonderful on the outside was in fact, a living nightmare.  Nick wasn’t her boyfriend and never was here, her alternate self was a manipulating bully and there was something dangerous hunting people at night.  Then she finds that she can’t return home and may be trapped there forever with no one that she is able to trust.

3:59 is an amazing sci-fi fantasy with a complex storyline that provides such an array of twists and turns that will keep you guessing. Gretchen McNeil has provided an exciting well-written story that I know will have Hollywood knocking.  To me, everything that she writes is magnificent and 3:59 has risen to the top of the list.

Winter Romance Wednesday! Kimberly reviews Christmas On 4th Street by Susan Mallery

Christmas on 4th StreetTITLE: Christmas On 4th Street
SERIES #: Fool’s Gold #12.5
CHARACTERS: Noelle & Gabriel
AUTHOR: Susan Mallery
PUBLICATION DATE: 09/24/13
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
There’s nowhere better to spend the holidays than with New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery in the town of Fool’s Gold, where love is always waiting to be unwrapped… Noelle Perkins just got a second chance at life, and she intends to make the most of every minute. That’s why she ditched a frustrating legal career to open her own store in Fool’s Gold, California. The Christmas Attic celebrates everything that’s magical about her favorite season. Business is booming, and as a bonus, gorgeous army doctor Gabriel Boylan has offered to help out during the holiday rush.

Gabriel’s memories of Christmas past contain more sour grapes than sugar plums, thanks to a drill sergeant father who ran his home like a boot camp. Spending the holidays with his family while he recuperates from injury sounds as appetizing as last year’s eggnog. Still, there are some enjoyable distractions in town, including sunny, sexy Noelle…and the red-hot mistletoe kisses they can’t stop sharing.

Gabriel didn’t think he was made for happily-ever-afters. But when fate hands you a love as sweet and surprising as this, only a fool could refuse.

KIMBERLY’S REVIEW:
5 Stars 6 Hours! 6 Wonderful hours… That is how long it took me to read this book. I could not put it down. There is no better place to be than Fool’s Gold during the holidays or anytime of year really. But there is something about the streets covered in snow with decorations on every business that makes you feel at home there.

We met Noelle in the previous books in the series and while we knew she had a history we hadn’t found out what it was until now. Noelle is a fighter but you wouldn’t know it from the sweetness we have come to know about her. And it takes awhile for Gabriel to see it too. These two are perfect for eachother. There is a chemistry that you feel from the first couple of pages and never seems to stop sizzling.

There is just something about this unbelievable town that makes you want to pack up and move there. Mallery has a way of bringing you home to her fictional town and making you never want to leave.

KELLY’S REVIEW:
4 Stars As always Fool’s Gold is a fun place to visit. While this was not my favorite Fool’s Gold book I have read so far it was still a fun book. Gabriel & Noelle are so sweet together. It started from chapter one and keep going to the end of the book. Which is where I had my only problem. For me the jump from I can’t commit
to the altar was just a little too fast for my liking. But other than that I enjoyed this book. I really loved the snow scene!
If you are a Susan Mallery fan you will love this book. Because how can a trip to Fool’s Gold ever truly be bad?

Book Spotlight: Vicious by V.E. Schwab

vicious

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates–brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other.  In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveal an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

Ten years later,  Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability.  Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find–aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will.  Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the arch nemeses have set a course for revenge–but who will be left alive at the end?

NUMBER OF STARS: Five Stars

I was waiting patiently to get my hands on Vicious because everything that this author writes is amazing.  Vicious tells the story of Victor and Eli, two intelligent, yet arrogant, college students who believe that they have the ability to become Extra-Ordinary individuals if they carefully create and experience near-death events.  By coming back from the brink of death, they would develop supernatural abilities that would not only prove their thesis but put them in a higher class than those around them.  Victor and Eli play with the delicate balance of their own lives and these events lead to tragedy and betrayal that will haunt them for years.

Vicious was such a great book for me because it reminded me so much of another novel, Frankenstein, that I still love after reading it so many years ago.  Victor and Eli believed that by creating their own near-death experiences that they would achieve unbelievable power and used death to create a new life.  By playing God, each of them had to deal with the tragic events that resulted, destroying a friendship and sending one character into the slow descent of madness.  By becoming Extra-Ordinary, Eli believed that he had to right to get rid of others who had their own near-death experiences.  Instead of becoming the hero he wanted to be, he in a way became a monster who had to be stopped before he harmed others. Now, Victor is on the hunt for his old friend and with each step that leads Victor to Eli, their story slowly unfolds in front of our eyes.

Vicious is an emotional thrill-ride about the consequences of life and death that is destined to become a literary classic. V.E. Schwab weaves a captivating tale that will haunt you well after you have finished reading the last page and I was sorry that we had to say goodbye to these characters.  If Ms. Schwab isn’t on your list of authors to watch, she should be because every book is more amazing and thought-provoking than her last.
