BOOK SYNOPSIS:
COUNTDOWN TO CRISIS
A serial killer strikes every twelve hours. A vampire takes lives at random. At first glance, these tragic incidents seem unrelated. But Special Investigations Unit agents Sam Ryan and Gabriel Stern trace them both back to a military base known as Hopeworth. Is the murder spree part of a cover-up? And are the vampire killings less by chance and more methodical?
The investigation takes an eerie, personal turn when Sam discovers a connection between herself and the victims—and a clue to her own mysterious origins. With the violence escalating and the danger drawing closer to home, the stakes are raised and the mission changes from seeking justice to ensuring Sam and Gabriel’s own survival. And the one person who seems to hold all the answers—about Hopeworth, about Sam’s past—is a mystery man she isn’t sure she can trust. They share a psychic link through her dreams, and he once saved her life, but he may just be the greatest enemy humankind has ever known.

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts Darn you cliff hanger endings!! This was another really strong installment of the Spook series. There are so many questions and so little answers in this second book. Sam is finding keys to her past and it’s pointing in a direction that is so disturbing. She continues to be a great lead character for this series. She’s extremely practical and self-aware, which makes her very likable and strong. Gabriel is just driving me crazy! Someone just needs to slap him on the head a couple of times. Though it does make for great intensity and funny dialogue between the two. We meet more supporting characters in this book, which is really fun. However, trying to keep all of the plot characters in line was difficult for me. There was just so much going on, at times it was hard to follow. The strong story was there for me and I’m completely invested in this series. I cannot wait for book 3, I need to know how all of this ends!

Kelly& Natasha review Rock Courtship by Nalini Singh

SERIES #: A Rock Kiss Novella #1.5
CHARACTERS: David Rivera & Thea Arsana
AUTHOR: Nalini Singh
PUBLICATION DATE: September 30, 2014
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N coming soon

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s new contemporary romance novella is pure hard rock and scorching heat…

What happens when the Gentleman of Rock decides to play dirty?

A drummer for the hottest rock band on the planet, David has a single, powerful weakness: Thea, the band’s publicist and the woman who steals his breath away with her every move.

Only problem is, Thea doesn’t date clients–or musicians. Emotionally scarred by a cheating ex, she’s not about to risk her heart with a man who has groupies buzzing around him like flies. Even if his sexy smile ties her up in knots.

What she doesn’t know is that David is a one-woman man…and he’s madly in love with her. David’s determined to prove he’s worth the risk, and willing to court her, step by exquisite step. Thea’s about to discover just how long and hard this handsome drummer can play.

KELLY’S REVIEW:
4 Hearts Rock Courtship is book 2 in Nalini Singh’s new Rock Kiss. In book one we learned that David had a bit of a crush on Thea. But the Thea has a two die hard rule “never date a client” and “never date a musician”. But David wants her and is willing to do anything he can to get her.

This was a quick read. Only 14 chapters but filled with a lot of heat and love. I don’t want to get any spoilers. David and Thea’s relationship is so sweet and I love the lengths that David goes to to get his woman.

If you enjoyed Rock Addiction (bk1) you will enjoy Rock Courtship. If you have not started the Rock Kiss series yet I would suggest you get started. But never fear you could read Rock Courtship and be okay.

NATASHA’S REVIEW:
5 Hearts This was my first Nalini Singh book and now I’m hooked! I literally could not put this book down. I sat down to read a few pages and two hours later I was done. My only complaint is that it was a novella and not nearly long enough for my liking. This novella takes place parallel to book 1 in the Rock Kiss series – Rock Addiction. I haven’t read book 1, but found this story very easy to follow along with. Thea and David are so sweet and so perfect together. I found them both extremely likable characters and was invested in their stories very quickly – which is not typical for me. I am now going to go back and read Rock Addiction and every other book that comes out in this series. The characters are intriguing and I want to know what goes on with this tight-knit group of characters and their sometimes dysfunctional family.

Kimberly reviews Gentlemen Prefer Curves by Sugar Jamison

gentlemen prefer curvesTITLE: Gentlemen Prefer Curves
SERIES #: Perfect Fit #3
CHARACTERS: Belinda & Carter
AUTHOR: Sugar Jamison
PUBLICATION DATE: 09/30/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Stuck. At thirty years old Belinda Gordon felt her life was at a total standstill. With her love life in the dumps, her best friends happily married and her parents smothering her, she decides her life needs a little bit of shaking up.
Just when Belinda is about to make a move, her estranged husband and the last man on earth she ever wants to see, Carter Lancaster, comes storming back into her life. And this time he’s not taking no for an answer. Armed with his sweet daughter and a take no prisoners attitude, he’s determined to win his wife back.
Can Belinda let go of their rocky past and let love in? Or will she let it prevent her from finding her happily ever after?

REVIEW:
Another cute story by Sugar Jamison. Jamison has a way of getting right to the heart of the bigger girls in the world. She brings out the insecurities but also the love of our own bodies. She manages to roll everything emotion into the big girl from desire to despair to everything in between.
We met Belinda in book 1 and have waited for her story ever since. And boy did we get it. Belinda is already married… Who knew? But estranged from her husband for 4 years. Both have hurt feelings on how it ended and even why it ended but the thing we realize right away is that they never stopped loving each other no matter how mad or hurt they were.

Carter is an interesting character. He is not alpha nor nerd but something between them. He has a bad boy side that screams HOT in the bedroom and in love but then he is so unbalanced in real life. He forgets that his daughter needs shoes and tells her to remind him and only hears half sentences sometimes and is just out of his element and then he turns around and the love he has for Ruby just melts the readers heart. Ruby is an adorable character and while no 5 year old I know speaks like her she just steals every scene she is in. Another delightful read from Jamison and for us big girls in the world who want to love and be loved.

AUTHOR: Jaci Burton
PUBLICATION DATE: September 30, 2014

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Molly Burnett and Carter Richards share a painful past, one that sent Molly running out of town, vowing never to return. The only thing bringing her back is her sister’s wedding, and she doesn’t intend to stay long. But circumstances force her to remain in town, and within close distance of the one man who hurt her more than she’d ever been hurt before. Can the two of them face down the past and work together toward the possibility of love and happiness in Hope?

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts With Emma & Luke’s wedding on the horizon Molly has no choice but to return home for her sister’s wedding. You see Molly left Hope 12 years ago and never looked back. Never visited. Never seemed to care about what and who she left behind. But being back will change all that. The only question is will Molly let it change or will she run again?
It was so nice to get back to the lovely little town of Hope, Oklahoma. I am totally in love with Carter. He is just so sweet and thoughtful. Yet, he knows what he wants and is willing to take that leap of faith to get it. Even if that means using a sledgehammer to knock it into Molly’s head. Molly on the other hand is so catch up in the past that she can’t see what an amazing future she could have. I loved both of these characters so much. There is hurt that they both have to get over. But if they can do that they future could be so amazingly bright.

If you have not stepped foot into Hope yet you need to pack your bags and take a trip down here and see what can happen in Hope, Oklahoma.

SERIES #: No Weddings #2
CHARACTERS: Hannah & Cade
AUTHOR: Kat & Stone Bastion
PUBLICATION DATE: 9/29/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N {coming soon}

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The stakes climb higher in this second book in the No Weddings Series for Hannah Martin, a woman restrained by her past, and Cade Michaelson, the man who could help set her free.
I’m drawn to Cade as he charms his way into more of my life and offers me something I truly haven’t ever had: a friend. Yet his humor, patience, and drop-dead sexiness take my breath away, and I know my heart is at risk. I want to move forward but am terrified I can’t.
Cade seems to have it together from his own devastating heartache. His subtle actions, however, suggest a different story. And even though he says he wants more, I wonder if he’s able to trust in our developing relationship.
As we navigate through our tangled feelings, we vow to take it slow. Yet no matter how careful we try to be, things between us intensify—and there’s nothing we can do, or want to do, to stop it.

But the biggest question remains: Is chemistry enough to move beyond the past and toward a future together?

REVIEW:
Finally! A little fire between these two! This was book 2 in the No Weddings series, but told from Hannah’s perspective! Hannah and Cade have been through a lot, and I’m totally rooting for them the entire time. I fell in love with Cade and Hannah even more in this second installment and really want them to continue moving forward! Big steps were taken in this book and I can only imagine what more is to come. This is an exceptional series. The characters are intriguing and easy to relate to. You find yourself fully engrossed in their world and can’t put the book down. I can’t wait to see what else is coming for these two.

Blog Tour & Review: Stirring The Plot by Daryl Wood Gerber

stirring the plot large banner 640

Today I have the lovely Daryl Wood Gerber here on Books-n-Kisses to share a yummy recipe for her new book, Stirring The Plot.  It sounds so delicious and I can’t wait to try it out myself. 🙂  Take it away, Daryl.

I write the Cookbook Nook and Cheese Shop mysteries. In both, I include recipes. Who knew when I started writing mysteries that I’d also have to cook? Luckily, I like to cook. And eat.

In the Cookbook Nook series, my protagonist Jenna isn’t much of a cook. But she, like me, loves to eat. Throughout the series, she is learning to cook. In FINAL SENTENCE, she starts out with five-ingredient recipes. If she can dump all the ingredients into one bowl, all the better. By the third in the series, STIRRING THE PLOT, the book that’s coming out September 30, Jenna is up to ten ingredients and more complicated steps. She even makes candy!

Anyway, for Jenna, and for my fans, I like to come up with easy recipes. Now, this one doesn’t look easy because of all the ingredients and steps, and it might give Jenna the heebie-jeebies, but it is pretty easy. It’s your basic “cook all the stuff” and “assemble.” In honor of my Cheese Shop mysteries, this contains, you guessed it, cheese.

It also includes kale, what many pundits are calling the “good for you” or “super” food. Now, I am not big on eating kale “raw.” It’s a little hard to chew. Truly. Hard. Crunchy. And not in the fun way like a potato chip. But when cooked in a lasagna, it’s delish. You could probably substitute spinach if you’re not a kale fan. But try it. I think you’ll like it.

Enjoy!

KALE CHICKEN LASAGNA
(serves 6-8)

FOR THE SAUCE
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 ½ pounds skinless, boneless chicken thighs
1 small sweet onion, choppedIMG_4568
3 cloves garlic, chopped
3 tablespoons tomato paste
½ cup chardonnay (white wine)
1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes
3 bay leaves
¼ cup chopped fresh parsley
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground pepper

FOR THE LASAGNA
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 pound lasagna noodles
(*real; not no-boil) (gluten-free okay)
Extra-virgin olive oil for drizzling
2 cups kale, stems removed
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
30 ounces part-skim ricotta cheese
3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup MORE chopped fresh parsley
1 teaspoon ground pepper
4 cups grated Mozzarella cheese (about 1 lb)
2 cups grated Asiago cheese

Directions:

To make the sauce:
Heat the olive oil in a large (and I mean large) skillet over medium heat; add the chicken and cook until browned. Turn every minute, for 5 minutes.

Add the chopped onion, chopped garlic, and tomato paste. Cook, stirring, until the onions soften, about 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook until the wine evaporates, about 5 minutes. Stir in 3 cups water, crushed tomatoes, bay leaves, and parsley. Add 1 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium low and simmer 50 minutes. Using a spoon, break up the chicken. Cook another 20 minutes, until thickened. Remove the bay leaves.

Meanwhile:

Prepare the lasagna according to the package. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the noodles and cook (about half what the label directs). Drain the noodles and drizzle with olive oil; set aside.

Meanwhile:

Place the kale in a large microwave-safe bowl. Add ½ cup water and ¼ teaspoon salt. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave until tender, about 3 minutes on high. Drain and rinse under cold water. Press out all the excess water. Stir in the eggs, ricotta, ¼ cup of the Parmesan cheese, and the extra chopped parsley. Add 1 teaspoon salt and 4-5 grinds of the pepper.

In a separate bowl, toss the Mozzarella, Asiago, and the remaining Parmesan.

Turn on oven to 350 degrees F.

Spread 3/4 cup of the sauce in a 9 x 13-inch baking dish. Top with 1/3 of the noodles. Overlap, layering long ones first and then short ones crosswise. Cover with half of the kale-ricotta mixture. Then 2 more cups sauce. Cover with half of the Mozzarella cheese mixture.
Repeat the layers (noodles, kale-ricotta mixture, sauce, cheese).

Set on a baking sheet. (This will bubble over.)

Loosely cover with foil (you don’t want the foil to stick to the cheese). Bake 40 minutes, then uncover and bake another 25 minutes. You might want to raise heat to 400 degrees F.

Let stand 30 minutes before serving.

Great reheated the next day. One hour at 300 degrees F.

Jennifer’s Review of Stirring The Plot

Review (4 Stars): Stirring The Plot is the third title in the deliciously charming Cookbook Nook mystery series and I love spending time with the entertaining residents of Crystal Cove.  Halloween is quickly approaching and Jenna is gearing to participate in the festivities put on by the Winsome Witches, a group of ladies who turn the spooky holidays into a fundraising event each year.  Pearl Thornton, a therapist and the high priestess of the Winsome Witches, turns up dead in her home and Jenna’s aunt becomes the number one suspect in the murder.  Jenna can’t believe that her Aunt Vera is involved but Vera starts acting strangely and it is up to Jenna to get to the bottom of this mystery.

Stirring The Plot is a fun, charming holiday mystery that will keep you guessing.  With the well-written plot twists, cookbook recommendations and descriptions of delicious food, this series will be a winner for all mystery lovers.  For me, I love Jenna and the quirky characters of Crystal Cove and look forward to spending more time with them with each new release of the series.  I enjoyed the Halloween ideas sprinkled throughout this story and learning which cookbooks Jenna favored this holiday season for her store. I will definitely be picking up a few of the cookbooks that were mentioned in Stirring The Plot because everything described made me hungry while reading this book. I can’t wait to read more from Ms. Gerber and see what happens next to Jenna and the residents of Crystal Cove.

Sometimes it has to get worst before it get’s better. Pretty much sums up this 4th and final part of Burning Desire.
Overall review of Burning Desire:
Love these Dragon Kings, but I really wish they would just take out the Dark’s already. I was kinda hoping that things would be just a tad bit different in this book. And while they were to an extent the story line did follow a very similar path as the first two books. I did love the twists that Ms. Grant through in to this book. I loved the ending and what happens (I know I am not any help 😉 you will just have to read to find out). I can’t wait to see what happens with Rhys and I want to know all of Rhi’s secrets. BOOK SYNOPSIS:
She’d left him at the altar, but her heart was always his…
After more than ten years away, Australian soap opera star Ellie Hughes returns to the small town of Hope Junction, determined to fly under the radar while caring for her injured godmother, Matilda.
But word spreads fast in the tight-knit community. It isn’t long before the people of Hope Junction are gossiping about the real reason for Ellie’s visit and why she broke the heart of golden boy Flynn Quartermaine all those years ago.
Soon Ellie and Flynn are thrown back together, forced to deal with the unresolved emotions between them. Because Ellie is not the only one with secrets. Flynn has his own demons to battle, and Matilda is hiding something from her much-loved goddaughter.
When all is uncovered, can the ill-fated lovers overcome the wounds of their past? Or is Flynn destined to be jilted again?

REVIEW:
This is a re-release from just a couple of years ago. Set in Australia this is a sweet second chance at love romance. While part of me expected not to like Ellie at first because she is a star and I thought she would come across as a spoiled Hollywood type that is not true and I enjoyed her. Flynn is also a great character. Even though he is the typical romance hero he also has a heart of gold and really just wants to understand what happened between them that left him at the alter.

There is so much more to this story then the romance even though that is the heart of the story. Johns’ takes us into a world that deals with some darkness in life that many people have to deal with. And I enjoyed the relationships between Ellie and Matilda as well.

I enjoy Johns’ stories very much and this is no exception. I enjoyed the characters very much and enjoyed the visit to Hope Springs. I can’t wait for the next by the author.

Amazon/B&N

*EXCERPT*

Rebecca took his hand to lead him to a table, but the gentle touch managed to kick the air from his lungs. He’d lived so long in a world where most women begged permission to touch him that her complete indifference to his celebrity status shocked him. But then, maybe that was a good thing. If she didn’t know who he was, he might be able to let his guard down long enough to enjoy coffee with her.

He glanced around the room, but no one was staring at them or whispering to their friends while pointing at him. No flash of a paparazzo’s camera. No cringe-worthy fear that sharing dessert with Rebecca would be tomorrow’s headline on TMZ.

For the first time in years, he felt almost normal.

He placed his helmet in an empty chair and sat down across from her. As much as he wanted to relax, he couldn’t quite let his guard down. “Come here often?”

“Is it that obvious?”

“Just slightly.”

She laughed at his dry reply. “You’re really missing out on Gitta’s Sacher-torte. It was her grandmother’s recipe.”

“I haven’t been very hungry lately.”

She nodded, empathy flittering across her features. “Yeah, once you’ve had your guts turned inside out for a week, it takes a while for the appetite to come back.”

He leaned forward, elbows on the table, and lowered his voice. “I still have a hard time believing someone like you understands what I’m going through.”

“Why?”

Her quick reply caught him off guard. He backed away and gestured to her appearance. “Because…”

“Because I don’t look the part?”

Before he could answer, Gitta interrupted them by setting a plate of chocolate cake and two mugs on the table. Steam rose from his mug of black coffee, but a mound of cinnamon-sprinkled whipped cream covered her beverage. “What is that?”

She stirred some of the cream into her drink and licked the spoon. “Cinnamon hazelnut hot chocolate.”

“Someone’s going to have a sugar rush tonight.”

She flashed him a wicked grin before drinking a gulp of her hot chocolate. When she lowered her mug, a dot of whipped cream lay perched on the end of her nose.

Ethan tried to smother the laugh that rose from his throat, but it was no use. Instead, he let it out and reached for a napkin. “You have a little something on your nose.”

“Oh?” But instead of acting mortified and reaching for a mirror like he expected her to do, she laughed with him and wiped her nose with a napkin.

“Got it?”

He nodded, once again surprised by her. Here was a refined young woman who wasn’t the least bit concerned with her appearance. Very different from the high-society girls he’d gone to high school with or the models and actresses he’d met through the years.

Jennifer’s Review of A Seductive Melody

Review (4.25 Stars): This is the second book that I’ve read in the Kelly Brothers series and for me, this series keeps getting better and better.  Ethan Kelly is struggling to stay sober after the death of his best friend and bandmate from an overdose.  For Ethan, drugs have always been his muse and the reason for his musical talent in his band, Ravinia’s Rejects.  Hoping to battle his demons and stay clean, Ethan joins Narcotics Anonymous and meets Becca, who agrees to become his sponsor on his road to recovery.  Becca understands the temptation that Ethan is facing especially while trying to stay out of the public eye and the tabloids.  She has faced that same road as Ethan, except her escapades were well documented by the paparazzi because she is the heiress of a prestigious hotel empire. Together, they can finally find the love that they have been missing in their lives and heal the emotional wounds that led them down the road to addiction in the first place.

A Seductive Melody was a great story for me about two people that found love while trying to deal with the emotional trials of recovering from addiction.  Ethan was in a very fragile place and was walking a fine line of falling back into his old habits before he met Becca.  In the beginning, he gave the drugs credit for his talent because he felt he created the best music while he was high, when in actuality, he always had that talent within him, he just need a different muse.  Becca was the life support that he needed to stay clean, and he was the one person who understood what she dealt with by trying to be a normal person when people think they know you from that they have seen in the tabloids. I loved that he cared and supported her and helped her deal with her family issues, which was one of the main reasons she turned to drugs in the first place.  Her family was the one thing that Becca had been avoiding and once she was able to deal with that and prove to people that she was a different person, she was able to create the life for herself that she desperately wanted.  A Seductive Melody was a great addition to the series and I’m a big fan of Ms. McHugh’s writing, so I am looking forward to the next story that will be released.

It started with the death of her mother and a required trip to Peregrine Island. A trip she is making under duress, not only fulfill the terms of her mothers agreement with Mr. Harp but also to find what her mother called “her legacy”. To say that Annie is thrilled would be an understatement. But a girl has to do what she has to do to survive. And that means facing the demons of her past.

Blood and gore are Theo Harps lime light.
Theo is back on Peregrine Island to write a follow up book to his wildly popular horror novel. But nothing is going right for him. Exceptionally now that Annie Hewitt is back on the island. But as hard as he tries Theo can’t stay away from her.

I am ashamed to say that this was my first Susan Elizabeth Phillips book and the first book that I listened to that was narrated by Erin Bennett. I was fortunate enough to get a copy of Hero’s are my Weakness from the publisher and started reading. Then I found it on audible. Since I had a long drive in front of me I picked up the audio version too. So I got to read and listen to this book. I will say that on the audio version the puppets were just a tad bit freaky in the beginning. But I grow to love them just as much as I loved Theo & Annie. But I think at times the puppets took over a little too much. But it worked. I am very happy that I read/listened to this book. I look forward to more of Susan’s books and I will be watching for more books narrated by Erin.

Disclaimer:
I received a complimentary copy of the book from Harbor Collins along with the audio version I purchased from Audible in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

love on the boardwalkTITLE: Love on the Boardwalk

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Atlantic City is the perfect place for detective Bradley Hudson to nurse his broken heart. A week of beer and strippers is sure to erase his former fiancée from his memory for good. What he didn’t count on was running into a sassy redhead from his past. Maybe a rebound romp is an even better plan…
Trina Trimble, private eye in training, is thrilled to be reunited with the hottie she almost hooked up with last summer. She’s undercover on her first solo case, but there’s always time to lock lips with a sexy cop. Besides, a fun fling with Brad doesn’t have to last beyond his week in town.
Brad and Trina are supposed to be just flirting, not forging a new forever. Brad’s still healing, and although Trina changes careers the way other women change shoes, she has finally found her calling in her new life of disguises and stakeouts. But when an irresistible job offer threatens to lure her away, Brad will need to decide to let her go or bet it all on love and risk his heart again.

NATASHA’S REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts This story was a quick, easy read that I really enjoyed. This book is a sequel to Love at High Tide, which I hadn’t read. Yet I had no problem following this story, so it is easily read as a stand-alone. Brad and Trina are both hysterical characters with electric chemistry. Trina might be one of my favorite female characters ever. She’s so energetic and just has a positive energy about her that is contagious, even through the pages. Brad is just as likable a character and I found myself rooting for him all the way. We also got to see the interactions between Brad, Trina and the characters from book 1 – Coop and Darcy. Seeing all of these characters interact was a delight and a lot of fun. I want to be a part of their group. All in this entire story was nearly flawless and I highly recommend it.

KIMBERLY’S REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts This is a cute short story. This is a follow up story to Love At High Tide which I have to say I did not read and while it is obvious that Darcy and Cooper had their own story it really does not need to be read before this one. Trina is a snide, sarcastic and funny woman and she made me laugh. Brad is trying to get back on the horse after the break up 6 months ago from his fiancee. Brad wasn’t one of my favorite book guys but he was sweet and Trina more than made up for him.
