Kelly reviews Hunter’s Moon by Lisa Kessler

Hunters MoonTITLE: Hunter’s Moon
SERIES #: Moon #2
CHARACTERS: Aren Sloan & Sasha
AUTHOR: Lisa Kessler
PUBLICATION DATE: Oct 22, 2013
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Sasha’s future was stolen from her the moment she was bitten. Now she’s on the run from the Nero Organization that transformed her from a human detective into a shape shifting jaguar assassin.

When a rogue bounty hunter threatens her younger sister, she’ll be forced to fight, and with nowhere else to turn, Sasha will need to trust the one man who has every reason to want her dead.

Aren is a werewolf with a secret. While protecting his twin brother and Alpha of the Pack, he found his one mate for life. Sadly she’s also the jaguar assassin who tried to kill them both. Now Aren is struggling between his animal nature to love and protect her, and his loyalty to the Pack.

REVIEW:
Another really good book by Lisa. I really loved Aren & Sasha’s characters. And if you have not read Moonlight I would suggest you stop here and go grab Moonlight then come back. Moonlight and Hunter’s Moon are very connected and you might feel like you are missing a piece of the puzzle. Be warned below might be a spoiler for you.

Aren & Sasha have a bit of a history. And it is not a very pleasant history. You know with whole tasering, kidnapping, gagging and shooting of body parts these two do not have your typical love at first sight romance. Well it kinda was for Aren, well right after Sasha head butted him that is.
But now the Nero Organization has it’s sights set on Sasha and they are not playing for keeps. This is seek and destroy mission. Aren is determined to do everything in his power to protect Sasha not matter what. But when Sasha’s little sister is used a leverage and now plan has to be formed.

This was a great story. Again we get the story from both Aren & Sasha’s point of view. I am very much looking forward to the next installment in The Moon series. But while I really enjoyed Aren’s story I am so looking forward to Sebastian’s story.

Jennifer’s Review of Murderous Matrimony

Review (4.5 Stars): One thing that I love about this series is that you are able to get a glimpse of days gone by and spend time with these wonderful characters.  Jessie and Chase are finally tying the knot but they find themselves in the middle of a murder mystery two weeks before their nuptials.   This time, the murder happens in Jessie’s new Arts and Crafts museum and her assistant is the prime suspect.  Now Jessie must find the real killer while dealing with a mischievous blue ghost and a wedding day jitters.

I love this series because I connected with Jessie from the very first book.  She is fun, smart and always seems to find herself in the middle of these murder investigations.  I also love the other quirky characters of the Ren Faire because each of them add to the story and make this such a delightful series.  This is a series that shouldn’t be missed and I always love  being able to step back in time for just a little while.

A Late Thaw Blog Tour and Giveaway

A Late Thaw-blog tour bannerI have Ana Blaze here today to talk about her new release, A Late Thaw. This is a hot and steamy novella that I just couldn’t put down and I love the idea of Joe Manganiello as Cole. 🙂

1. Tell me about your new release.

A Late Thaw is a friends-to-lovers story set in a very small town in Vermont.

2. Where did you come up with the idea for this book?

I think I had the setting first.  I went to college in a small town in Vermont and it holds a special place in my heart.  I’m also particularly fond of stories about friends who finally admit their feelings and get their happy endings, so this little tale is very much a “me” kind of story.  I was also thinking a little bit about the tough road some guys have to plow, trying to be chivalrous but still respectful.  That’s a bit of a challenge for Cole.  He always means well, but he doesn’t always express himself well when it comes to the woman he loves.  So he thinks that if he can help her he should, and she thinks he’s a bit over-bearing.  I find that to be an interesting dynamic.  She’s sort of fiercely independent and he loves that about her but doesn’t know quite where that leaves him.

3. Do you have any actors in mind when you are writing these characters?

I basically pictured a young Joe Manganiello.  I think he has an almost universal appeal.  He’s handsome, but not too pretty and he looks like he could rescue people from a burning building but that he’d also stop and scoop up kittens on his way out.  That’s the ideal man, right? Just me? Oh.

As for an actress, I don’t think I really pictured one whilst writing, but I’d say Sarah Bolger has the right look.  Maybe if I give a description, readers can give recommendations in the comments?  What do you say? Kiley is thin and about average height, maybe a little taller.  She has pale skin, straight brown hair, grey-blue eyes and a modest chest.

4. What are you working on now?

I have two big projects in the works right now.  The first is a contemporary NA romance set in a small college in upstate NY (so not so far from the type of school I attended) and the second is a paranormal romance with vampires and a touch of suspense.  I love vampires.  I’m the reason they keep making more vampire television shows.

5. Do you have any other authors that you feel influence you and your writing?

I read a ton and I’d say that when you’re a writer most everything you read influences you at least a little, so why don’t I just list some of my favorite authors.  I love: Anne Rice, Nora Roberts, Kelley Armstrong, Rachel Caine, Patricia Briggs, Charlaine Harris, Jill Shalvis, Sophie Moss, Richelle Mead, Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, D.D. Barant, Mary Janice Davidson and J.K. Rowling.

6. Favorite junk food? Or what food or drink do you absolutely have to have while writing?

Diet Coke.  I love Diet Coke.  When it’s cold, I like to sip tea (Earl Grey!) in my disappearing Tardis mug.

7. Any advice for aspiring writers?

Finish the story.  I think a lot of writers are perfectionists and it’s easy to get all caught up trying to write a perfect first draft and then never finish it.  That makes me sad, I think there are some great stories out there that are waiting to be told by writers who are holding themselves back.  Just write it.  The perfecting (which is never done) happens later.  You need a first draft to move forward.  So write a first draft and then find a couple of great beta readers.

Thank you so much for answering my questions.

Thank you so much for having me!

The town’s too small for Kiley St. Claire’s reappearance to be a surprise, still seeing her hits Cole Thomas like a punch to the gut. She ripped his heart apart when she turned to ice and ran away all those years ago.  Now that she’s back, Cole’s going to say his piece and move on.

Even if she does look damn good in that uniform.

Kiley St. Claire is back in the small town of Barrett, Vermont, for one reason and one reason only: to earn some cash so she can survive her final semester of grad school.  She’s not there for the sexy Christmas tree farmers.

Even the one who once held her heart.

Jennifer’s Review of A Late Thaw

Review (4.5 Stars): I fell in love with Cole right away after starting A Late ThawHe was sexy, strong and only had eyes for Kiley, when he could have any woman that he wanted. He and Kiley made a great couple, who once started out as childhood friends but grew apart because of a teenage misunderstanding.   They had great chemistry together and I loved how they both had feelings for one another but never really acted on them.

Ana Blaze has created a fun light-hearted romance that will immediately captivate you.  I love her style of writing and I connected with her characters right away.  A Late Thaw is a perfect little romance and I absolutely can’t wait to read more great stories from Ms. Blaze.

Until Fountain BridgeTITLE: Until Fountain Bridge
SERIES #: On Dublin Street #1.6
CHARACTERS: Ellie & Adam
AUTHOR: Samantha Young
PUBLICATION DATE: 06/18/13
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Ellie Carmichael had a crush on Adam Sutherland, her brother, Braden’s, best friend, for years, and although Adam treated her with proprietary concern he made it clear he thought of her only as a little sister.

Over the years, as Ellie’s crush develops into love, her romantic idealism makes it difficult for her to move on. To make matters worse, as she’s gotten older, Adam’s attitude has changed toward her. His affection for her is now joined by attraction, but his loyalty to Braden, and his fear of losing the only family he has, stops him from claiming Ellie the way she wishes he would.

But one night his attraction is put to the test, and as much as Adam would like things to remain the same everything changes between them in a simple brush of the lips.

Soon lust, love, jealousy and heartbreak combine to force change upon their relationship… and Adam discovers the hard way that life is too damn short to spend it on regret.

REVIEW:
This is a novella of what happened behind the scenes in On Dublin Street between Ellie and Adam and having read the first book I loved being able to watch these scenes unfold.

I enjoyed the way it was written as well. Not as if it was a new story but a look back at the love story through Ellie’s diaries that Adam had not read before. Very sweet and moving. And I love this couple.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Monica Appleby is a woman with a reputation. Once she was America’s teenage “Wild Child,” with her own reality TV show. Now she’s a successful author coming home to Bishop, Arkansas, to pen the juicy follow-up to her tell-all autobiography. Problem is, the hottest man in town wants her gone. Mayor Jackson Davies is trying to convince a cookie giant to move its headquarters to his crumbling community, and Monica’s presence is just too . . . unwholesome for business. But the desire in his eyes sends a very different message: Stay, at least for a while.

Jackson needs this cookie deal to go through. His town is dying and this may be its last shot. Monica is a distraction proving too sweet, too inviting—and completely beyond his control. With every kiss he can taste her loneliness, her regrets, and her longing. Soon their uncontrollable attraction is causing all kinds of drama. But when two lost hearts take a surprise detour onto the bumpy road of unexpected love, it can only lead someplace wonderful.

REVIEW:
I enjoyed this story. This story has a bit of a different storyline to it which was enjoyable to read. I thought the characters have an instant connection and it is well written. It is a bit repetitive at times but it does not take away from the story.

I enjoyed the characters and the growth that they both go through and even the growth of the town. I enjoyed the background characters as well. It would be interesting to read Shelby’s story next (hint, hint Molly O’Keefe).

Enjoyable read that any fan of small town romance would enjoy.

Winter Romance Wednesday! Jennifer reviews The Entity Who Came For Christmas by Cat Devon

Entity who cameTITLE: The Entity Who Came For Christmas
SERIES #: Entity 2.5
CHARACTERS: Simon and Pru
AUTHOR: Cat Devon
PUBLICATION DATE: 10/15/13
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS: Pru Daniels should know better than to hook up with sexy Simon Howell. He’s a vampire Demon Hunter and a former knight at King Arthur’s roundtable. She’s a witch, a descendant of Morgan Le Fay. Clearly things could get complicated.

When Simon shows up in Vamptown while Pru is visiting a friend and fellow witch, he claims to have come for the holidays to visit fellow Demon Hunter Damon Thornheart. But things soon turn passionate as Pru and Simon join together to battle the forces of evil. The holidays won’t be the only thing ruined if Simon and Pru can’t work things out. Can this vampire Demon Hunter find his heart in time to save his love….and his immortality?

REVIEW: The thing that I love about Cat Devon is the humor that is in her books. Her characters have some of the best one-liners that I’ve seen and The Entity Who Came For Christmas is no exception. Simon Howell, is in town for the holidays to visit his protege Damon and search for the legendary Excalibur. What he didn’t plan on was running into the one woman who melted his rough exterior and placed a curse on sex life.

Pru Daniels thought she was done with Simon Howell when he left her and ultimately breaking her heart. Seeing him again brought back old feelings and she is stuck helping him find the Excalibur while he is town. Together, their sexual chemistry is so hot it melts the snow and they just can’t seem to stay mad at each other for very long.

This was a very sweet novella and perfect for the holiday season. My only problem with it was that I wanted it to be longer so I could learn more about Simon and Pru. I didn’t want their story to end. I also loved catching up with familiar characters and I can’t wait to read her next book, Love Your Entity, which is out later this year.

NARRATOR: Sue Pitkin
PUBLICATION DATE: June 25, 2013

BOOK SYNOPSIS:

With her life on the line, she narrowly avoids another murder attempt—only to run headlong into Lord Brigham de Mornay, a man most consider a monster.

With her uncle’s henchmen nipping at her heels, Aurora knows better than to trust a stranger—especially one as compelling as Brigham. Well-honed instincts urge her to flee before his abundant charm takes a nasty turn into aggression—and she ends up neck deep in trouble.

Wary, but undeniably drawn to him, Aurora pits her will against his, challenging his authority every chance she gets. But when her uncle manages to track her, the game of fox and hound takes a perilous turn and she is left with the ultimate choice—surrender to the man who now holds her heart or risk it all trying to escape again.

Gritty and fast-paced, Warrior’s Revenge brings to life the magnificence of the medieval age while exploring the meaning of honor, duty, and nature of true love.

REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts I enjoyed this book. I listened to all but the last two chapters on audio book, because I was impatient and could not wait until the next morning to finish. So since I had Warrior’s Revenge on my kindle I read the last two chapters. So I will start there. Sue Pitkin is not my favorite narrator. She did a good job with the telling of the story and the female voices. But the male voices were just off for me. They didn’t sound quite right.
I can’t really put my finger on it. But even with that I enjoyed the story.
Aurora is fun (even if she likes the words “the big brute” too much). I liked her fighting spirit and her will to survive. I did have to say I really enjoyed the banter between Aurora & Brigham. It was really fun to watch the each of the try to push the other to the breaking point.

Brigham for a better word is a brute. He has been very accustomed to getting his way and never having anyone stand up to him. I loved that Aurora got the better of him time and time again.

I am looking forward to seeing what is next in the Warriors of the Realm series I really want Cam’s story and I want to learn more about Quinlyn, Aurora’s feisty best friend.

UnbreakableTITLE: Unbreakable
SERIES #: Section 8 #2
CHARACTERS: Gunner & Avery
AUTHOR: Stephanie Tyler
PUBLICATION DATE: Nov. 5, 2013
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
A cabal of operatives with dangerous pasts team up to work black ops missions. Their weapon: deception. Can they help one of their own before he goes too far?

When Gunner agreed to help out Section 8, he didn’t realize he’d be pulled back in to the shadowy world he’d thought he’d escaped forever. The son of double agents, Gunner was initiated at a young age into the cold world of espionage when his father forced him to work for international smuggler Drew Landon. And when Gunner’s past with Landon threatens the other mercenaries, and most importantly, Avery, he makes an impossible choice…and disappears.

Avery’s not willing to give up on Gunner. The attraction between them has been there from the start and she rallies Section 8 to help him. She knows there’s only one way to keep Gunner safe: fake his death and take him off the grid. But when she finally locates him, Gunner is a changed man, harder, more desperate, and on the edge of self-destruction. And only Avery can find a way to free him from Landon—and from the demons of his past—before it’s too late.

REVIEW:
This was a great follow up to Stephanie’s first book Surrender (book one in the Section 8 series). While you don’t have to read book one I really think you should. It will give you much better understanding of the characters in the whole series. But a huge insight into Gunner’s mind set. That being said I am really mad at how Gunner handled things in the beginning of this book. It is like he took the easy way out. I understand why he did what he did but I still didn’t really see his character being like that. I really love Avery. This chick is wicked strong. Avery is put through the ringer and comes out of it a stronger person for it.

The storyline of the Section 8 series gets more complicated with each book, but Stephanie does a great job of string them all together. I am very much looking forward to Jem’s story. I can’t wait to see the crazy twists and turns that will come next. If you have not started the Section 8 series now is a great time to start. We are only sitting at book 2 right now!! Go out and get a copy of Surrender today!

Deathbed & Breakfast Blog Tour and Review

great escape tour banner large DEATHBED AND BREAKFAST 640

I am delighted to have Bart Gilbertson here today to talk about his new mystery, Deathbed & Breakfast. This one takes place in Oregon and is a very fun read.

SSR – Sustained Silent Reading

When I was in the 4th Grade, our teacher, Mrs. Parks, would read to the entire class from a book for about 30 minutes or so every day after our lunch break.  Some of us would put our heads down on the desk, others would just lean back in their chairs, and still others would get out a piece of paper and draw doodles while she would read to us.  We learned how to eat a fried worm, solve mysteries (thanks to Encyclopedia Brown), and how to herd cattle and horses according to a ranch boy called “Little Britches.” It was in this way that I really found a love for books.  I especially loved it when she read “Where The Red Fern Grows” by Wilson Rawls.  That was the one book that lit a fire inside of me and made me want to become a writer myself someday.

Towards the end of that school year, my parents relocated us to a neighboring town about 11 miles away and I had to finish 4th Grade with a new teacher, Mrs. Beasley.  What I really liked about Mrs. Beasley’s class, was that she had rotating book shelves filled with paperback books about all sorts of things.  It was in this class that two new traditions started for me.

The first tradition took place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  It was something we did for about 45 minutes every afternoon that Mrs. Beasley called “SSR.”  It stood for “Sustained Silent Reading.”  All of us kids would go over and pick out a book off the rotating racks, or get out something we’d brought from home.  Then, we’d just read to ourselves…silently.  I know most of the kids really looked forward to these days.  I was one of them.  I loved SSR time.  So much so, that I still have SSR time.  It isn’t quite as often as it used to be with the added responsibilities of adulthood, but it is still important.

The second tradition was that, everywhere I went, I carried a book with me.  I don’t mean required reading or school text books.  Some sort of fiction.  In between the lectures and school work, I could always be found reading a book.  This is something that has also followed me down through the years.  I knew early on in life, that I wanted my own books out there for others to carry with them and read when they could.

I believe we all need some SSR time.  Television, movies, music, even video games…they all have a place in our lives.  So does reading – sustained silent reading.  With no music playing, no television going off in the background; just you, your book, and your imagination.

It thrilled me to watch my daughter as she grew up and see how much she loved to read books as well.  Her bookshelves are full of books, and she’s read them all.  She was happier receiving a book as a gift than a movie or a video game.  There is nothing quite like the twinkle in a young person’s eyes as they delve into a captivating story on the high seas, or a mystery.

My book, “Deathbed & Breakfast,” tries to capture that same magical feeling of a good mystery.  A fun and humorous read, it will keep you guessing as you move forward to the killer’s identity at the end.  Put aside some time for it as you enjoy a little SSR!

All the guests somehow seem to be connected to Richard’s past and when he is found dead the next morning, everyone is suspect. However, there are a few wrinkles that the inn’s owners Edna and Mildred Pookotz need to iron out as the investigation unfolds. Not only was Richard deathly ill, but he was also accused of embezzling $750,000 which is still unaccounted for. The local Sheriff suspects that this victim’s death is not a natural one, so he–and the sisters–set forth to discover who the murderer is.

Jennifer’s Review of Deathbed & Breakfast

Review (4.0 Stars): I am always looking for new authors and I really enjoyed Mr. Gilbertson’s new book, Deathbed & Breakfast.  I loved the fact that the Pookotz Bed & Breakfast was set in Oregon which added to the charm of this delightful mystery.  The mystery was well-written and fast-paced which caused me to spend half the night reading it just to try to figure out who the killer was.  I loved the Pookotz sisters because they were such interesting characters and I loved their old-fashioned ways.

The supporting characters in this mystery are what really make this book fun.  Felix, the elderly chef who can’t hear and can barely see had some hilarious scenes in this book as well as the other quirky guests that were staying at the bed & breakfast.  This was an enjoyable mystery with a lovely cast of characters that I can’t wait to visit again.
