Kelly reviews Hard As You Can by Laura Kaye

Hard as you canTITLE: Hard As You Can
SERIES #: Hard Ink #2
CHARACTERS: Shane McCallan & Crystal Dean
AUTHOR: Laura Kaye
PUBLICATION DATE: February 25, 2014
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Five dishonored soldiers.
Former Special Forces.
One last mission.
These are the men of Hard Ink.

Ever since hard-bodied, drop-dead-charming Shane McCallan strolled into the dance club where Crystal Dean works, he’s shown a knack for getting beneath her defenses. For her little sister’s sake, Crystal can’t get too close. Until her job and Shane’s mission intersect, and he reveals talents that go deeper than she could have guessed.

Shane would never turn his back on a friend in need, especially a former Special Forces teammate running a dangerous, off-the-books operation. Nor can he walk away from Crystal. The gorgeous waitress is hiding secrets she doesn’t want him to uncover. Too bad. He’s exactly the man she needs to protect her sister, her life, and her heart. All he has to do is convince her that when something feels this good, you hold on as hard as you can—and never let go.

REVIEW:
I liked this story. Loved Shane. But had a little bit of a hard time with Crystal. Not that it really was any of her fault she was related to the wrong person. But honestly I think I would have have tried to find help before four years past. But fear and love make you do some strange things.

I am looking forward to the next book in the Hard Ink series.

Kelly & Kimberly review Evenings Stars by Susan Mallery

Evening StarsTITLE: Evening Stars
SERIES #: Blackberry Island #3
CHARACTERS:
AUTHOR: Susan Mallery
PUBLICATION DATE: February 25, 2014
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery returns to Blackberry Island with the poignant tale of two sisters on the verge of claiming their dreams.

Small-town nurse Nina Wentworth has made a career out of being a caretaker. More “Mom” than their mother ever was, she sacrificed medical school—and her first love—so her sister could break free. Which is why she isn’t exactly thrilled to see Averil back on Blackberry Island, especially when Nina’s life has suddenly become…complicated.

Nina unexpectedly finds herself juggling two men—her high school sweetheart and a younger maverick pilot who also wants to claim her heart. But as fun as all this romance is, Nina has real life to deal with. Averil doesn’t seem to want the great guy she’s married to, and doesn’t seem to be making headway writing her first book; their mom is living life just as recklessly as she always has; and Nina’s starting to realize that the control she once had is slipping out of her fingers. Her hopes of getting off the island seem to be stretching further away…until her mother makes a discovery that could change everything forever.

But before Nina and Averil can reach for the stars, they have to decide what they want. Will Averil stay? Will Nina leave? And what about the men who claim to love them? Does love heal, or will finding their happy ending mean giving up all they’ve ever wanted?

REVIEW:
3 Hearts Sadly this book was not a hit for me. I love Susan Mallery’s Fools Gold series so much, but Evening Stars fell flat for me. I just never really connected with any of the characters in this book. Both Nina & Averil got on my nerves. The only character I really did like was Kyle and I think it was his bad boy image. Maybe I had high hopes for this books or maybe it was the juggling of stories lines from character to character. I am not sure. It just was not for me.

KIMBERLY’S REVIEW:
4 Hearts There is just one word for the story. Poignant. Yes there is a romance (or two) in this story but that is not what it is about. This is about family and the dynamics of a family with a mom who will not grow up, a daughter who grew up too fast and another daughter who doesn’t know her role in her life.

I had a bit of a hard time connecting with Nina at first. She seemed so put upon but once I realized why she was like that I could understand her life. She was thrown into a life that she never wanted to have. Then Averil seemed so spoiled but again once you get to know the character and her history it all makes sense. These women needed to realize what they needed from life and this story is their coming of age even though they are already adults.

This is not a Fool’s Gold story filled with love and happy endings. But it is a great story that makes you sad, happy, smile and heartbroken. The characters weave their way into your system and you want to see them bloom.

Kimberly reviews The Cottage On Juniper Ridge by Sheila Roberts

Cottage on Juniper RidgeTITLE: The Cottage on Juniper Ridge
SERIES #: Life in Icicle Falls #4
CHARACTERS: Various
AUTHOR: Sheila Roberts
PUBLICATION DATE: 02/25/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
How to Change Your Life…

Can a book change your life? Yes, when it’s Simplicity, Muriel Sterling’s guide to plain living. In fact, it inspires Jen Heath to leave her stressful, overcommitted life in Seattle and move to Icicle Falls, where she rents a lovely little cottage on Juniper Ridge. And where she can enjoy simple pleasures—like joining the local book club—and complicated ones, like falling in love with her sexy landlord, Garrett Armstrong.

Her sister Toni is ready for a change, too. She’s got a teenage daughter who’s constantly texting her friends, a husband who’s more involved with his computer than he is with her, and a son who’s consumed by video games. Toni wants her family to grow closer—to return to a simpler way of life.

Other women in town, like Stacy Thomas, are also inspired to unload their excess stuff and some of the extra responsibilities they’ve taken on.

But as they all discover, sometimes life simply happens. It doesn’t always happen simply!

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts This is the 4th in the series and I have not read the others and also this is the first I have read from this author even though I have heard her name for years. This book has a lot of characters from past books but it does explain those characters fine. You just know you have missed their story.

This story is not about Jen and Garrett but about the women of Icicle Falls. Garrett is actually rarely in it to be honest. And gives little time to form a connection between them. Actually the connection that is there seems forced. But the connection of the women is not forced at all. The friendship is very well written. This story is about learning to simplify your life. it is about learning what you need and do not need in your life. This is the story of women taking on more than they can handle to be “superwoman” and them learning how to say “no”. The book they talk about Simplicity by Muriel Sterling needs to really be written.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts I had to think about this review for a little while. I really love Gena Showalter’s book. I absolutely love Justine Eyre as a narrator. And I really did enjoy this story. But when I got to the end I kept looking at my phone (because that is where my audio books plays) and thought “That’s it??”. Yep sure enough that was the end of the book. To me it felt just a little rushed but yet it was wrapped up nicely. My next thought was there will be another books with Kyrin & Mia, but as far as I can see they don’t get another book.

So I am on the fence. I like the book. Loved Justine reading to me. Loved Kyrin. Liked Mia. Loved the side characters. But was left wanting more. I wanted more Kyrin time. I wanted to see more Kyrin & Mia. I guess I hope that as the series goes on we will get glimpses of Kyrin and Mia. Because there are a lot of questions that need to be answered and the future is not certain.

If you love Gena Showalter I think that you will like this book. If you love to listen to Justine Eyre this is right up your alley. Over all I am happy with my purchase and read.

Kimberly reviews The Chance by Robyn Carr

The ChanceTITLE: The Chance
SERIES #: Thunder Point #4
CHARACTERS: Laine & Eric
AUTHOR: Robyn Carr
PUBLICATION DATE: 02/25/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
With its breathtaking vistas and down-to-earth people, Thunder Point is the perfect place for FBI agent Laine Carrington to recuperate from a gunshot wound and contemplate her future. The locals embraced Laine as one of their own after she risked her life to save a young girl from a dangerous cult. Knowing her wounds go beyond the physical, Laine hopes she’ll fit in for a while and find her true self in a town that feels safe. She may even learn to open her heart to others, something an undercover agent has little time to indulge.

Eric Gentry is also new to Thunder Point. Although he’s a man with a dark past, he’s determined to put down roots and get to know the daughter he only recently discovered. When Laine and Eric meet, their attraction is obvious to everyone. But while the law enforcement agent and the reformed criminal want to make things work, their differences may run too deep; unless they take a chance on each other and find that deep and mysterious bond that belongs to those who choose love over fear.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts This story seemed different from the rest of the series some how. I enjoyed it but not as much as the other ones. Everything about it was so opposite of what I have gotten used to reading from Carr. First the role reversal of Laine. She is the hard edged FBI agent and is dealing from PTSD in a way from the actions in The Hero (#3). Eric is more blue collar with a record and really not an alpha type guy at all.

Then there is the difference that they connect almost immediately and everything moves very fast so the reader is not waiting for them to realize they are in love. The reader does wonder when the next shoe will drop but even when it does it is more like a slipper. There is not a lot of action.

Now do not get me wrong. I enjoyed the story. I liked Eric and like Laine. They seem to fit some how. It’s just this is not my favorite in the series. I hope the next one is about Doctor Scott.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Being the Beta of the Redwood Pack isn’t an easy task, but Jasper has never complained. He’s spent his entire adult life dropping everything so he can take care of others. Now he’s a father, a husband…and tired. His mate, Willow, knows Jasper won’t let others know that he might need a break, even for a weekend, so that’s where she comes in.

Once Jasper lets go and allows his mate to call the shots, this Beta might just be in for the ride of a lifetime.

Author’s Note: This is a novella set between books 6 and 7 to give you a taste of Jasper and Willow. It is best that you have already immersed yourselves in the Redwood Pack world, however even new readers will enjoy a glimpse of one of the Redwood’s favorite couples.

REVIEW:
Jasper needs to learn to slow down a little and his perfect little mate is the one to show him how.

This was a short and sweet novella that give us a look at one of the favorite couples of the Redwood Pack series. I enjoyed this story but I think little Brie stole the show for me. She is too cute.

If you are a Redwood Pack fan you will enjoy this novella.

He refuses to be restrained…

3- V.R. Barkowski – JUST A LIE

He’s recently learned his best friend, Mike Gabretti, is cheating on his wife. When Mike breaks off the illicit affair, Del promises to say nothing—better to keep a secret than break a heart. But that’s before the jilted mistress sets her sights on payback. Now Del must choose between ignoring a danger he understands only too well or revealing the truth that will betray a lifelong friendship and destroy the lives of those closest to him.

4- Erica Hayes – UNFORGIVEN
In a decadent republic on the brink of revolution, immortal blood drinker Lisette has long ago learned the price of her selfish pursuit of pleasure. Now, trapped in marriage to the stoic nobleman who saved her from the mob, she’s vowed to use her powers only for good. By night, she stalks plague-ridden streets, armed with rapier and pistol, hunting the Possessed: the pleasure-crazed victims of Lisette’s own kind.

But beneath her respectable façade, old hungers still burn, sated only by her husband’s fading love… until the hunt pits her against their ancient enemy, a dark prince and lover who rekindles Lisette’s forbidden thirst for power — and blood.

Betrayed by the only man who can save her, with the city erupting in flames and ultimate power within her grasp, Lisette must choose between dark past and uncertain future, shadows and light — and the two magnificent, tragically irreconcilable men who haunt her soul.

5- Lizbeth Lipperman – SWEEPERS: A KISS TO DIE FOR
Dr. Mackenzie Conley, a CIA operative and expert on bioterrorism, is in Morocco undercover as a visiting professor at the University. Her mission is to investigate rumors of a powerful new nerve gas delivery system being perfected somewhere in the area. The rest of her team, including her fiancé, has already gone home after spending two weeks without finding even a hint of such a weapon. Mac stayed behind to finish her six-week stint to ensure her cover stays intact should she need to use it again.

With only one week left, Mac can’t wait to get back to the states and her fiancé. But someone in Morocco has other plans for her—plans that include kidnapping, drugging, and holding her hostage in a mountain laboratory, totally hidden from satellite coverage. Neither her team nor her handler knows where she is.

Escaping from the mountain prison becomes critical but isn’t the only thing on Mac’s mind, though, as she comes face to face with the man whose latest invention has the potential to bring the world to its knees.

6- Charlie Holmberg – SALT AND WATER
A slave to a war-torn society for eighteen months, Chellis has been tortured for one purpose: to make her cry, for the healing properties of her tears can mend any soldier’s wound. But when her captors push her too far, she revolts, resulting in her reassignment to a slave handler better suited to control her.

Ahad-dian is different from Chellis’s previous handlers. He’s reasonable, seems incapable of brutality, and treats Chellis as a sentient being, not a tool. It’s almost enough for Chellis to trust him. Ahad-dian’s generosity may be a key to Chellis’s escape, but even the soft-hearted slaver has secrets to hide—secrets that not only threaten Chellis’s freedom, but the survival of her entire species.

7- Coreene Callahan – FURY OF FATE
She’s determined to try something new…
Sasha Cooper is a woman on a mission. Determined to let loose and live a little, she takes her best friend’s advice and embarks on a night of passion with a complete stranger. No regrets in the morning. No looking back either. But when the one she chooses turns out to be a Dragonkind warrior, Sasha knows she’s in trouble—and that the man she believed was a dream come true could end up being her worst nightmare.

He never intended to get involved…
Ivar, leader of a rogue faction of Dragonkind, isn’t a pushover. So when a noisy neighbor jeopardizes the security of his secret lair, he decides to take care of the problem once and for all. Little does he know banging on Sasha’s door will send him on a passionate odyssey unlike any he’s ever experienced. But when the night takes a deadly turn, he’s left little choice—escape from the woman who possesses the power to kill him, or die trying.

8- S.G. Redling – THE TRUE LOVE OF SHERRY PAPERS

REVIEW: 3 1/2 Over all Hearts
As these are all short stories my review of each are going to be short and sweet too 😉 Okay so over all these stories were okay for me. 2 of them I really like, one of them I is didn’t like at all and the other were kinda in the middle for me.

HEARTLESS: What a way to start off this story collection!!! I have never read any of Tiffinie’s books yet. But I fell in love with Cam & Roxie!! And really nothing says true love like a couple murders right?

TANTRABOBUS: This story was just okay for me. I didn’t really feel much of a connection with any of the characters. But the ghost story was interesting

JUST A LIE: This was not a bad little story. Murder, betrayal and a confession note. But it left me looking for the next page. I hope that there will be a continuation of this story.

UNFORGIVEN: This story was just okay for me. I was a little confused about the world and what was going on.

SWEEPERS: A KISS TO DIE FOR: I didn’t like this story. 🙁

SALT AND WATER: Again another story that was just okay for me. I again was confused about the world.

FURY OF FATE: My first thought was Ivar really Ivar? After all the crap he has put the Nightfury’s through? But once I started to read I realized Ivar might not be as bad as we thought. Loved this story and hope that Coreene will continue these two’s story.

THE TRUE LOVE OF SHERRY PAPERS: This was a strange story for me. I liked it but was a little confused.

But when Amery senses Ronin is hiding something, she questions her total trust in him, despite the undeniable thrill of his possession….

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts I have to start by saying that this was my first Lorelei James book. I know, I know. As soon as I post this I will get tons of book suggestions. Thanks in advance. Next the formatting of this book was bad. I realize it was an advance copy but it was a little hard to read. Okay on to the story.

I liked this story. I was not in love with it. Ronin is a bit of an asshat an extremely hot, brooding, tough as nails guys but still an asshat. I liked him and hated him all at the same time. Which means he must need lots and lots of love. I guess I will just have to hope that Amery will be able to do that. Speaking of Amery, I do like her. It was fun to watch her come out of her shy little shell. But I would have like to see her stand up for herself just a little bit earlier in the book. But then again if she did that the book might have ended.

As it is I will have to wait for book 2 Unbound to find out if Ronin can get things back on track or if he screwed things up to much.

REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts This is the third installment by Jeffe Kennedy’s new book. It is a very short story that is being told in 6 installments. In the first installment we met the characters, in the second we saw Christy and Master come together. In this installment the Master introduces Christy to his world of sexual control.

It is obviously based on Phantom of the Opera with a few differences of course. There is a bit of suspense as well but that is not the true story.

Kimberly reviews The Wishing Tree by MaryBeth Whalen

Wishing TreeTITLE: The Wishing Tree
CHARACTERS: Ivy
AUTHOR: Marybeth Whalen
PUBLICATION DATE: 07/04/13
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Ivy Marshall, a savvy, determined woman, finds out her husband has cheated on her on the same day her sister’s perfect boyfriend proposes on national television. When Ivy’s mother asks her to return to her family’s beach home to plan her sister’s upcoming wedding, she decides to use the excuse to escape from the pain of her circumstances.
When her return to Sunset Beach, North Carolina, brings her face to face with her former fiance, old feelings rise to the surface and she wonders if there is a future for them. However, her husband has started tweeting his apology to her and doesn’t want to give up on their marriage. As she helps prepare the wishing tree for her sister’s wedding, she must examine her own wishes for the future and decide what love should be…

REVIEW:
3.75 Stars I honestly do not know of one woman who hasn’t had the thoughts that Ivy did in this story. “If I could turn back time, would I?” Ivy has just left her husband to go home to where she was once loved by her childhood sweetheart and back to a family who is upset with her for leaving him to marry someone else. But it is where she needs to be right now so off she goes. And while there she wonders about what could have been and what is.

The problem was it was a very depressing read through most of it. However I understand the quandry. I understand that moment of wondering “what if”. I understand remembering what seemed like a better simpler time.

This is a poignant, soul searching read and any woman can relate to.

BlindsidedTITLE: Blindsided
SERIES #: Sisterhood #22
CHARACTERS: Maggie & Myra
AUTHOR: Fern Michaels
PUBLICATION DATE: 12/31/13

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Ladies On Fire

Myra Rutledge isn’t ready to mothball the Sisterhood just yet. When Maggie Spitzer, former editor-in-chief of the Post and an honorary member of the Sisterhood, arrives with a new mission in mind, the Vigilantes are soon gathering in their war room once more. While catching up on each other’s lives, they plan a brilliant campaign against a duo of corrupt judges running a moneymaking racket that sends young offenders to brutal boot camps, often on trumped-up charges. Their enemies are powerful and ruthless, but the Sisterhood have their own formidable allies – including former President Martine Connor. Once their scheme takes off, the guilty won’t know what hit them. . .

REVIEW:
I could not finish this book but I think it was my own error. I requested this book from NetGalley because I have read other Fern Michaels books and while I think she has an odd way about her writing I usually enjoy the story. However, this book is the 22nd in a series called Sisterhood. The problem is this story is about the characters getting back together and restarting some type of operation they worked on before and while I tried I couldn’t understand the whole history of these characters.

Now I think if you are a fan of Fern Michaels and have read the other books you would probably enjoy it since this would be the 22nd in the series you have read. So I gave it 3 stars to split the error on my part down the middle.

Kelly reviews Believe by Erin McCarthy

BelieveTITLE: Believe
SERIES #: True Believer
CHARACTERS: Phoenix & Robin
AUTHOR: Erin McCarthy
PUBLICATION DATE: January 21, 2014
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Robin used to be a party girl… until she got black out drunk and woke up in bed with her best friend’s boyfriend. Now she’s faced with being THAT girl, and couldn’t be more disgusted with herself. She can’t even tell her friends the reason for her sudden sobriety and she avoids everyone until she meets Phoenix—quiet, tattooed, and different in every way that’s good and oh, so bad…

Phoenix is two days out of jail when he meets Robin at his cousin’s house, and he knows that he has no business talking to her, but he’s drawn to her quiet demeanor, sweet smile, and artistic talent. She doesn’t care that he’s done time, or that he only has five bucks to his name, and she supports his goal to be a tattoo artist.

But Phoenix knows Robin has a secret, and that it’s a naïve dream to believe that his record won’t catch up with them at some point. Though neither is prepared for the explosive result when the past collides with the present…

REVIEW:
I think that I have come to the conclusion that New Adult is just not for me. I don’t feel any connection with the characters and that makes it really hard to read the book. I did like that Robin finally owned up to the things that she did and that she is trying to make a better herself better. But I guess it is the mom in me that thinks the whole time “well if you didn’t put yourself in that situation in the first place you would have these issues”. But then again if the character didn’t have all of this drama then there would be no story. I think fans of this series will enjoy Robin & Phoenix’s story. But for me I think that I am going to have to hang up my hat on this series.
