Interveiw & Giveaway with Judi Fennell

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Judi Fennell to the blog today.  We are chatting about her new release “Magic Gone Wild”

Judi, can you please share with us a little about yourself
JF: I was a princess in a former reincarnation who’s desperately trying to get back to that time. LOL. Nah. But I wouldn’t mind it. I’m finding it hard to believe I’m my chronological age and that my these kids who live in my house who are now driving could have come from me… I love romantic comedies (and walks on the beach…), and believe in happily-ever-afters. Yes, I’m a huge Disney fan and think the Magic Kingdom really is magical. And, someday, I WILL get to the Neuschwanstein Castle to see the real one Walt designed Cinderella’s after.

Have you always wanted to be an author?
JF: Always. I still have my journals from elementary school and the first story I ever wrote was about a talking raindrop. But only “those people” get to be authors, so I never really thought it was possible. I’m so glad I was wrong.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?
JF: I don’t know that I have quirks. I need peace and quiet, or some innocuous white noise. Typically, I turn on classical music because I need something I can’t sing to. If I can sing to it, I’m pulled out of the story. I like to write on my sofa, at a coffee shop, or at a fast food restaurant – hey, they have free WiFi and good (if bad for me) food.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?
JF: Magic Gone Wild is different from my other 5 books in that there’s really no “magical” setting. All of my other books take you to these fantastic places that come right out of my imagination. Not in this book. This one takes place in a Northeast PA small town, so I had a challenge in keeping the feeling of magic readers enjoy in a Judi Fennell book. Turns out, I made the characters—every day furniture, dishes, etc—magical and had a blast doing it. Think Fantasia – a movie which frightened the dickens out of me as a child, but it’s the perfect analogy. And, yes, I do know Disney did that movie. 🙂

How did you come with the idea for this story?
JF: You know, I don’t know. Sometimes I know how the story came about and others, I just get a character/scene in my head and go from there. That’s what happened with this story. I saw the prologue and the opening chapter. I knew the human hero would end up in the magical world and have to figure out what was going on. I knew the genie would be inept. Wasn’t sure why, but knew that she didn’t quite have a handle on her magic. That was about it when I started writing. The prologue is necessary in this book because it gives you insight into the story that both the reader and I needed. My editor said she’s not big on prologues, but in this story, it’s necessary. I did have a lot of fun writing that scene, though I had to go back and tweak it as the story progressed to make events fit later events. And then, of course, there are my sidekick characters. Merlin was a hoot to write—he just showed up and started talking and wouldn’t shut up at all.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?
JF: Current WIP is my first straight contemporary book, entitled Beefcake & Cupcakes: Magic Mike has nothing on Gage Tomlinson and his guys, as cupcake baker Laura agrees when she meets up with the strip-club owner during a bachelorette party. But can she deal with the jealousy that comes from having the hottest boyfriend in town who strips down at the drop of a dollar bill? Look for it at the end of August 2012.

I also have a light-hearted contemporary paranormal that was all over the internet a few years ago in several online contests, titled, Beauty and The Best, that’s now available online. It’s the story of personal-chef-romance-writer-wannabe Jolie Gardener, and reclusive-widowed-artist Todd Best who get a little help from a guardian angel named Jonathan who shows up as a kitten.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?
JF: Jude Devereaux. I have a very short list of “keeper” books: Bewitching by Jill Barnett, When He Was Wicked, by Julia Quinn, and A Knight in Shining Armor, by Jude Devereaux. I’ve met and chatted with the first two (Jill gave me a cover quote for my website and my books!), so she’s the last one to meet.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?
JF: Pour all of your heart and soul—all of your emotions—into the book. Write it. Then divorce yourself from it and give it to KNOWLEDGEABLE people to critique. Yes, “critique.” Not “read.” You don’t want your mom’s feedback of, “It’s wonderful, dear!” to be your guiding force in this industry. Get other writers’ opinions, listen to what they have to say, see what works for you, and revise until it’s ready to send out.  Then start writing the next book.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.
JF: Touring Western Europe. I lived in Spain in college, but never got around to seeing the rest of the “Continent.”

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?
JF: Stephanie Julian’s By Private Invitation. Look for it in the Winter of 2012 from Berkley. Erotic romance that sizzles!

Is there anything else you would like to add?
JF: Thank you so much for having me!

A deadly enemy bent on destruction is closer than they realize—and only they can keep chaos from ruling the world.

Review:
Fear the Darkness was a fabulous book.  Caine & Cassie’s story sucked me in so completely that I read this story so fast.  If I didn’t need sleep to function I would have read in one sitting.

I have to admit that I have not read all the books in the Guardians of Eternity series.  But that didn’t stop me from understanding what is happening in Fear the Darkness.  While I would recommend reading the books in order, it is not a must.

While I don’t know much about Caine and Cassie’s histories.  I love these characters in this book.  I loved the struggle these two have to go through.  I love all the drama that is surrounding them.

I am really looking forward to the next installment in this series and really need to do some backtracking and read the books I have missed.  If you are a fan of Alexandra Ivy, Fear the Darkness will not disappoint you.  We get a little of everything in this book, love, lust, trust, betrayal, dark and light, enemy and foe.

Interview with Eve Langlais

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Eve Langlais to the blog.

Eve, can you please share with us a little about yourself.

I am a masked avenger with skin tight, hot pants! I wish lol. In reality, I am a housewife with three ankle biters and a hubby determined to drive me insane J

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Yes and no. In my teens, I loved to write, fiction mostly which used to throw my teachers for a loop when they gave me assignments. However, I gave up writing for a while to be a grown up. The real world needed my attention as did my family. But a few years ago, after reading a really bad story, I decided it was time to write again. I might have been somewhat influenced by hubby who dared me to do better! Lol

Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

I love a whole bunch of writers for different reasons. Heck, it changes monthly even depending on who has caught my attention with their prose. One all time favorite is still Stephen King. His are some of the only books that survived my bookshelf purge. As for influence, having read so many books that didn’t quite make it for me, I don’t try to follow any particular style. I just write what I want to read. Lucky for me, there’s other readers out there that share my twisted sense of humor.

How did you get into writing in this specific genre?  Have you ever thought about writing in a different genre?

I love writing sci-fi and paranormal romance, especially with humorous overtones. The creativity aspect with those two genres can’t be beat. I have dabbled a little into magical fantasy, light BDSM and contemporary, but I find I really flow best when I’m writing about aliens or werewolves lol.

What are some of your writing rituals?

Closed door. A general idea. A bag of almonds to snack on. Oh, and some 80’s music in the background. J

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

A Demon And His Witch is my newest story. Based in Hell, it features a reader favorite Lucifer, who decides to pair up an incorrigible demon with a witch, just so he can watch the sparks fly. It is highly humorous, completely irreverent, and sexy!

How did you come with the idea for this story?

A while back, I wrote a trilogy entitled Princess Of Hell. In this series of books, I created a paranormal world where Hell was a real place with a society and set of rules. The world and hierarchy I created fascinated me. I just couldn’t resist going back to visit.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I’m working on Furry United Coalition, book 3. Readers have been eagerly awaiting this sequel, centering around Viktor and the mysterious woman he found locked in the mastermind’s dungeon. I can’t say too much yet, because the story is still in progress, but I’m of course aiming for laugh out loud moments, unique characters and of course some story progression, and perhaps even a revelation of who the mastermind is.

What would you be if you were not an author?

What I still am since I can’t quit my day job lol. A website tech support person.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I am dying for Illona Andrews newest Kate Daniels book. I read that series over the winter and love, LOVE Curran.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thank you! Thank you for having me visit and thank you for reading my stories. I hope to interact with you in the future either through my site, FB or Goodreads. It’s always great to meet new people.

Interview & Giveaway with M.L. Buchman

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome 1st time guest ML Buchman to the blog today to talk about his new release “I Own the Dawn”

ML, can you please share with us a little about yourself
MB: I love to eat. Italian, Chinese and Mexican especially. Food carts, cheap restaurants, good ones, don’t care, I love them all. I love to cook, see same 3 above. I love mushy movies, I cry before my wife does, and also crappy science fiction ones. When I’m not writing, I’m probably talking about writing. And when I’m doing neither, I’m either out walking with my lady, teasing my step-kid, or riding around on the bicycle that I traveled around the world on many years ago during a mid-life crisis on wheels.

Have you always wanted to be an author?
MB: I came late to writing. I started my first piece of fiction at 35 while on a plane with my bicycle from South Korea to ride across the Australian Outback. By the time I hit the Great Barrier Reef, I was totally hooked and haven’t looked back since.

Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?
MB: The authors who I’ve gone out of my way to read cover to cover (book 1 to book latest) include: Arthur C. Clarke, James Clavell, Herman Hesse, Ayn Rand, Anne McCaffrey, and a whole mess of Nora Roberts, Kristine Grayson (Rusch), Susan Wiggs, Stephen King & Robert A. Heinlein. Who influenced me? That’s easy, every single author I’ve had the good fortune to read since I first discovered the novel at age

How did you get into writing in this specific genre?  Have you ever thought about writing in a different genre?
MB: My first fiction effort was a short story about a freshman roommate who killed alarm clocks. He really did. I meant it to be a little non-fiction vignette. It turned into my first fantasy novel which I sold 3 years later. I love science fiction and fantasy, I’ve written a foodie thriller, and a half-dozen romances. I’ll always write in all three. It keeps my thoughts and my writing fresh and fun.

What are some of your writing rituals?
MB: Rock ‘n’ roll, usually loud (except opera on Sundays for reasons I still can’t quite ascertain). Anywhere. Anytime. I’m a night owl who will write until 2 or 3, get woken up by the book, and write more from 5:30 to 6:30, when I need to get headed out to work. I like a good piece of chocolate and a lot of water. I don’t get out of my chair often enough. When I get the time, I’ll write until my bladder’s screaming and my joints hurt (but just let me finish this scene, then I’ll go).

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?
MB: I Own the Dawn, Book II of “The Night Stalkers.” (No, not vampires.) They’re a real-life, U.S. Army secret helicopter regiment called SOAR. Their fliers are all men. So, my series takes the nastiest helicopter of them all, the DAP Black Hawk, and I started putting women in the seats. One per book. Book II is about Kee (don’t be callin’ me Keiko) Smith from the streets of L.A. She’s learned that the only thing that serves her well is a fighting attitude and an exceptional sniper rifle. She runs over men who never knew what hit them, until she runs headlong into Bostonian copilot Archibald “Archie” Stevenson III (can’t believe they let people with names like that into the army). The one man she can’t get around may turn out to be the one man she needs, if they don’t kill each first. Only after they’ve faced death side-by-side can they finally confront life together.

How did you come with the idea for this story?
MB: My stories start from any number of places, a title, a scene, an image, or even a final scene and then I have to build it backwards. I started this book with a secret helicopter outfit and a tough, feisty woman like I’d never written before. I saw her clear as could be and I just started writing. Some books I just start and it is as much a voyage of discovery for me as for the character. It makes it immensely fun to write… and often immensely frustrating.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?
MB: “The Night Stalkers” is a series, and that takes some doing. About three weeks ago I: finished the first draft of book IV, did the copyedits for book III, and got to hold the first copy of book II all in a one week period! Made my head spin being in 3 different books so closely together. I’m working on a “Night Stalkers Christmas Story” that will be out this fall and the second book of my contemporary romance series “Angelo’s Hearth” (book I, Where Dreams are Born, is already available.) And there’s this SF series that I’m just dying to get to. (Day jobs so get in the way of life sometimes.)

What would you be if you were not an author?
MB: A pilot. I always wanted to fly. Got my private pilot’s license and was well on my way to an instrument rating before it was discovered I was partially red-green colorblind. Not too bad to fly, but not good enough to ever make a career of it. Would I trade it? Not a chance!

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?
MB: Manuscript by a friend of mine, two more helicopter memoirs as part of research, a Lee Child thriller (great stories and a wonderful place to study character and pacing), the latest Susan Wiggs (because she’s just so fun).

Is there anything else you would like to add?
MB: Thanks for having me. Thanks for letting me talk about something I love doing so much. So tell me, what makes you stay up late and wake up early. (Not talking about the newborn, I’m talking about the thing you love to do.) I’ve showed you mine, c’mon, show me yours. 🙂 And please check out the contest page on my website: by following along my blog tour for the month of August, you will have multiple chances to win a signed copy of I Own the Dawn: http://www.matthewlieberbuchman.com/?p=294

Interview & Giveaway with Heather Lin

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome 1st time guest Heather Lin to the blog today.

Heather, can you please share with us a little about yourself

I am an avid fan of romance, adventure, fantasy, and science fiction. I read and write several genres, but I’m most known for my foray into erotic short stories and contemporary romance. I’m twenty-three, just married my husband in May, and we have a house and cat together in rural Delaware. Five days a week, I nanny for an adorable eighteen month-old girl, and the rest of the time I hang out with friends and family or, of course, write! I also run a blog here: http://heatherlin88.blogspot.com/

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Yes, definitely! I’ve been writing since I could pick up a pencil. My mother read to me constantly, and the stories she chose sparked my imagination and inspired me to make up and write down my own. The very first thing I wrote was a story about my new bike when I was five. At ten, with various video games and Harry Potter going to my head, I decided I was going to write the next great fantasy novel. I didn’t, but I gave it a pretty good go. Around the age of fourteen, I delved into the world of fan fiction, and by the time I was seventeen, I was ready to write an original story of my own with the intention of having it published. That’s where The System started, actually.

Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

I’ve always adored J.K. Rowling and J.R.R. Tolkien. The fact that they could create such amazing, new worlds in their writing is fascinating and something I aspire to. But I do feel that my love of the romance genre, and Carly Phillips in particular, has influenced my writing the most. These books taught me the general arc a romance should follow, and I learned what I like and dislike in a relationship between two characters.

How did you get into writing in this specific genre?  Have you ever thought about writing in a different genre?

The mixed genre of sci-fi romance came naturally to me. When I was younger, I was obsessed with Star Wars and the Jedi Apprentice book series that supplemented it. Firefly came along and took my breath away, and although I wasn’t an avid fan, I caught the odd Star Trek episode here and there. With all of these futuristic images and ideas in my mind, I always leaned towards the sci-fi/fantasy genre in my writing. And I’m pretty sure most people who know me would agree that I was born with boys on the brain. So when I finally sat down to write my first novel, it had to have the excitement and intrigue of science fiction along with the emotion of a good romance.

As for writing in a different genre, I do have an interest in writing a young adult novel or series one day. But even then, I feel like it would still have some kind of romance involved!

What are some of your writing rituals?

I write best on the couch with my laptop. I save my work after every sentence I write because I’m paranoid I might lose something. And, as with most writers, I tend to do my best work when I have a good cup of coffee in one hand. J

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

I’d love to! My latest (and favorite) book is a science fiction romance novel called The System.

Blurb

Capri is an alluring young prostitute with a painful past; Brody is a ruthless mercenary for a crew of thieves from the spaceship Gypsy Lass. When he enters her brothel, the attraction between them is instant, electric, and too much for him to handle. After a robbery gone wrong, the crew takes Capri hostage, forcing her and Brody to remain in close quarters until they see fit to drop her on another planet.

But Capri’s plight and the intense feelings between her and Brody turn out to be the least of their problems. Together—whether they like it or not—they uncover a secret no one in the whole System could have expected.

Excerpt (Unedited)

Year 564 after the Migration

Brody walked along a quiet street on the outskirts of New York on Earth one. A car zoomed by every few minutes. The newest ones were held aloft over the street by opposing magnetic charges; others were navigating themselves as the drivers fixed their hair or ate their lunch; and the cheapest ones necessitated the driver to attempt to handle the controls while fixing their hair or eating their lunch. He glanced over to admire a new Ford Mustang before opening the door to a small, neatly-kept building.

On the outside, it looked like a nice, upscale bar, but the inside would have shocked any upper-class drink connoisseur. There was loud yelling and catcalling, beer splashed out of mugs, and scantily-clad girls sat around, waiting for their turn to dance on poles. Brody grinned and rubbed a hand over the stubble of his chin. This was his kind of place.

“Good evening, sir.” At the intrusion of the male voice, Brody tore his eyes away from the dancing girls. “Will you be needing service tonight?”

“Yeah, how much?” Brody replied to the short, well-dressed man.

“Depends on who you like. Sit down and have a drink.” He smiled accommodatingly. “There isn’t any hurry to decide.”

Brody gave a short nod before heading to the bar. He watched the girls for a while, took in the scenery. There were older girls who were too faded for his liking and younger girls who were too fake. He was well into his second beer before he saw one that really made him want to open his wallet.

She was coming out of one of the side rooms, tugging a heavy-set, bald-headed man by his hand. They were laughing and chatting, and by the flush of their cheeks, they had just finished something hot and heavy. The girl was a young one, barely old enough to be called a woman, with a slim figure and long chestnut curls that were scattered with braids and beads. She must have felt Brody looking at her and met his gaze for a brief moment. Brody gave her a grin and signaled to the brothel’s manager. He came over to the bar with the scheduling window already up on the screen in his hand.

“Have you come to a decision?”

“Yeah. That pretty brunette there.” He waved a hand in the girl’s direction.

“Capri. She’s a very good choice. But I’m sorry to say that was her last customer. Our girls only take five per day. They need their rest. Would you like to choose another one or make an appointment for tomorrow?”

“I think I can handle another one, Guy,” said an alluring female voice.

Capri had escorted her last customer to the exit before approaching the bar. The barkeep handed her a glass of water, and she kept her eyes locked on Brody as she took a sip, examining him, sizing him up. He was keenly aware of his unshaven face, ratty jeans, and the gun strapped securely to his hip. But he was unapologetic. He might not be one of her upper-class clients, but he had the money for her. For now, she was his, whether she liked him or not. And by the way she’d jumped to get his pay, he doubted she was fazed by his rough exterior.

“I like the looks of this one,” was all she said to Guy by way of explanation before beckoning to Brody and heading back to her room.

“That’ll be five hundred,” the man told him.

Brody took out his wallet and opened it. A pocket on one side held blank cash cards and the other side held a small scanning device with a numbered keypad. He entered his password and the amount of money and swiped a card. Then he handed it to Guy and followed Capri into seclusion.

She was sitting on the edge of a double bed, her long, smooth legs crossed, waiting for him. Dark curls fell elegantly over the satin fabric of her red dressing gown, and her hazel eyes gleamed green in the overhead lighting. She was the image of perfection, and Brody could feel desire pulsing within him. He sat next to her and fingered the smooth fabric of her outfit.

“Red’s my favorite color,” he said.

“I’m glad you like it.”

Capri smiled and reached up to touch his face. He sucked in a breath at the tender gesture.

“It’s been a while for you, hasn’t it?” she asked softly.

“Don’t get the company of women much in my career.”

“What career is that?”

“There ain’t one in particular,” he replied, trying to focus on what he was saying as her fingers traced the muscles of his chest and abdomen. “The crew I run with just does… sorta odd jobs.”

“Sounds exciting,” Capri murmured, raising her eyes to meet his. “So how about you tell me your name before we get started?”

“Shots,” he answered.

“Is that your real name?”

“That’s what the boys call me.”

“Well, as you can see, I’m not one of the boys.” She gestured to her modest, but all-too-appealing curves.

“Brody,” he answered after a moment.

“Brody,” she repeated softly, grasping the bottom of his shirt and sliding it up over his head.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

I had the characters figured out before I built the world and decided on the full plot. I knew Brody would be “a grumpy hero” as one of my editors put it, and I knew Capri would need to balance him out and help endear him to readers. They would be part of a crew of thieves in space, have a turbulent romance, and live happily ever after. Or at least happily for now. Over the six years it took to complete the story, my writing skills and the plot evolved until The System became more than just a simple, futuristic romance, but a well-planned story with action, adventure, and a passionate relationship at the center.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I have two stories I’m working on at the moment, and I’m very excited about them both! One is a sequel to The System. I fell so in love with this new world and these dynamic characters that I couldn’t let them go just yet. So, with any luck, there will be more! The second is a contemporary romance inspired in part by the Robsten scandal.

What would you be if you were not an author?

I’m so happy being a nanny. I would probably just stick with that. J

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I’m in the middle of A Game of Thrones right now, and I can’t wait to read the last two books in The Hunger Games trilogy. I’m also excited to read Riding the Night by Jaci Burton. Interview & Giveaways with Kendra Elliot

Okay, I have to start this interview by letting everyone know that I am a Beaver fan and Kendra over there is a Duck fan.

Benny & Ducky

What does this mean to you?  Well, we are in state rivals and will let’s just say Beavers don’t like Ducks and Ducks don’t like Beavers…  Still don’t understand why I am telling you this?

Kendra’s 1st book in the Bone Secrets Series “Hidden” is set at Oregon State University home of the Beavers! But that doesn’t always mean that it is a good thing.

Kendra:   I was the first duck in my family. My parents, older brother, and older sister all went to OSU. The youngest sister fully rebelled and went to the University of Utah.

So now that we know all that.  Let’s begin.

Amazon | B&N

Eleven years ago, the Co-ed Slayer murdered nine female students on the Oregon State University campus. Lacey Campbell barely escaped his attack, but lost her best friend whose remains were never found. As the sole surviving victim, Lacey helped send the sadistic serial killer to prison for life.

Now a forensic odontologist examining teeth and bones for the state Medical Examiner, Lacey is devastated when she arrives at a crime scene and identifies the skeletal remains as her college friend’s.

The remains are discovered on the land of ex-cop Jack Harper. Sparks fly between him and Lacey, even as they realize that the prosecution’s witnesses from a decade ago are now being murdered one by one. All the evidence points to the Co-ed Slayer as the culprit—only, he’s long since dead. So who’s the new killer? And is Lacey next in line to die?

Kendra, can you please share with us a little about yourself:

I live in the Pacific Northwest and am married to an amazing man. I have three daughters, two odd cats, and an adorable Pomeranian who has us all wrapped around his little paw. I was a dental hygienist for many years and quit last spring to write full time. I have a degree in Journalism from the University of Oregon and used it extensively to write brilliant notes in dental charts.

Who has the better school colors?  You have to know Orange and Black is better than Yellow and Green any day right???

Let’s just say both sets of colors really suck. I mean, who wants to look like they’re wishing for Halloween all the time? And the yellow and green is simply too much bright color together. Someone should have used purple.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

God, no. Who’d want total strangers reading your work and telling you what was wrong with it? It wasn’t until about six years ago that I decided to write. I loved to read and after reading Diana Gabaldon’s OUTLANDER for the tenth time, I decided to give writing a try. I had no visions of publication, I just wanted to know if I could write a book.

Are you a plotter or a panster? And you explain the difference?

I’m a little of both. A plotter plots every twist and turn in the book. A pantser writes by the seat of her pants, going where instinct drives her as she types. I’m naturally a major planner and assumed I would be a plotter, but I’ve found some of my best writing occurs when I’m simply forcing myself to sit down and write. I’ve been bogged down with plotting to the point where I’ve wasted weeks not writing, because I couldn’t plan where to go next. A great tool for me is #1K1HR on twitter. It puts you with other writers who are racing to get 1000 words on the page in an hour. You just start pounding away at the keyboard. My stories take great unplanned turns during these sessions.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

I like silence while writing. No music. I write my notes on graph paper—the stuff with the tiny squares. I don’t like lined paper, especially yellow legal pads. And ink must be blue, not black. Wow. Those were really boring quirks.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

For HIDDEN, I had an image stuck in my head of a woman’s corpse buried in the foundation of a house. I think I picked it up from watching an episode of CSI. From there it just grew, incorporating aspects that I wanted to write about. Forensic dentistry, serial killers, and a clash between the hero and heroine.

For CHILLED, I attended a writing workshop led by a forensic nurse who volunteered with a search and rescue team. She was utterly cool and a fantastic inspiration for the heroine of a book. I later interviewed her and used several of her experiences in CHILLED.

Amazon | B&N

For BURIED, which comes out in 2013, I walked around for weeks with an idea of a group of children on a field trip who simply vanished long ago. I decided to make Michael from HIDDEN the hero of the story and have one of the missing children be his brother.

Why did you pick OSU as your setting for Hidden?

My heroine competed in college gymnastics. OSU has a program, I don’t think UofO ever did.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

Hmm. I’d have to say Diana Gabaldon or Robert Crais. I’ve met most of the authors I love at conferences or signings, but these two have been avoiding me for some reason.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Write and read lots. Repeat. Continue until luck happens.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

Mine is pretty short. I want a quiet home on the water somewhere where my husband and I can walk on the beach, talk, and write. I would like to see Machu Picchu and spend some time in Italy touring and eating.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I can’t wait for Lee Child’s A WANTED MAN in September. I buy all his books in hardback. Recently I discovered Lisa Unger. I want to read her backlist.

What is the best and worst thing about living in the Pacific Northwest?  For me it would be that it is so green and the worst would be lack of sunshine.

I like the rainy days. I don’t have to shave my legs or water the lawn on those days. Best thing would be simply quality of life. I know that is general, but the air is clean, crime is low, the people are friendly, and it doesn’t cost a fortune to live here. Worst would be it needs more snow!

What is your favorite time of year & why?

Fall. The kids go back to school and I have a quiet house for several hours of the day. And I love gearing up for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I’ve learned that getting ready for the holidays is usually more fun than the holiday itself. I usually make a list of things I want to do with the kids. Cookies, shopping, decorating and simply enjoy them.

Who is your Celebrity crush?  And what would you do if you ever meet them?

George Clooney. I would smile, forget all words, and wish I’d worn something different.

I would say that this interview went really well, despite the fact that you are a Duck and I am a Beaver. Is there anything else you would like to add?

Yes. I’m very sorry your Beavers have not won a Civil War football game since 2007.

Interview with Sinead MacDughals

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Sinead MacDuglas to the blog today.

Sinead, can you please share with us a little about yourself
Sure. I’m a born and bred Canadian with deep Irish roots, a bit of a cynic who still believes in magic, and I talk way too much, especially when I’m nervous. I’ve always been a late bloomer, and a horrible procrastinator, so it’s no surprise that I’m just now getting to publishing my writing, after over 30 years of dreaming about it. The only things I ever started early were talking, reading and writing.

Have you always wanted to be an author?
Just about as long as I can remember. I also wanted to be an astronaut, an anthropologist, a veterinarian, a doctor, a rock star, a teacher … well the list is incredibly long. Being an author is the only one I really stuck with though.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?
I don’t know about interesting, but maybe weird. I absolutely cannot read a novel when I’m writing one. I can read short stories, articles and blogs, but I have to set aside longer works when I’m writing. See, I tend to get right into a novel I’m reading, and then the piece I’m working on gets, well, for want of a better word, tainted. It’s like I absorb the personalities of the characters, and their emotions, and then I catch myself drifting out of character in my own writing

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?
My first full-length novel just released through Crushing Hearts and Black Butterfly Publishing. It’s a contemporary crime fiction novel with some really dark overtones.

The main character, Emily O’Shea, is working two part-time jobs, and struggling to keep her marriage together. She writes a column for the local paper, on exceptional teens in the community, and she has her eye on a spot in the news department. Just an average woman, living an average life, but there’s more to Emily than she’s letting on. She’s been running from her past, and hiding from the truth of it for a long time, and the reader meets Emily just minutes before her entire world begins to fall apart.

Someone abducts a young friend, and past subject for the column. Emily starts getting creepy phone calls. The most terrifying monster from her childhood is on the loose, and her deepest secrets are about to be exposed. When she gets pulled into a murder investigation, and her ex-lover is one of the lead investigators, things really go sideways!

The main story takes place in, mostly, just six days, in the summer of 1995.

How did you come with the idea for this story?
The original Learn To Love Me was supposed to be a Women’s Lit. book, actually. I stalled in the ninth chapter and, at a friend’s advice, scrapped the whole thing, except for a few of the characters. Emily was such a deep, troubled soul, I just couldn’t abandon her. See, my friend, (and cover designer for the book), just couldn’t believe that one woman could go through so much and keep her sanity. I made a flippant remark about having her “snap and start taking people out”, and he thought it was a great idea for me to write a murder mystery.

I thought about it afterward, and realized that years of reading true-crime and profiling books, and religiously watching shows like Law & Order, CSI Vegas and Criminal Minds, had given me a pretty solid base for mystery writing.

I decided to give it a shot, and began an outline for the new Learn To Love Me.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?
I have three projects I want to work on, but only two I’ve begun. One is the story of a woman who has a car accident and wakes up in limbo. She finds that the world of mythology and religion is a lot more connected, and a lot more complicated, than she ever believed. Before she can move on to her next destination, she’ll have to defend every major decision she made in life, and negotiate the terms of her continued existence.

The other project I’ve begun is somewhat a sequel to Learn To Love Me. I say ‘somewhat’, because this book is a dark paranormal fiction, but at least three of the characters from Learn To Love Me will play a role in it. It takes place in 2025 and up,  and involves cults, psychic abilities, soul mates and Native American culture, in a strange mix of the past and future.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?
I always answer this the same way, and this is no exception. I want to meet Richard Bach. His book, “The Bridge Across Forever” is the first modern novel to really get into my head and under my skin. I can’t even remember the character’s names, details of the story, or progression of the plot, but even after over 20 years, I can still remember how it made me feel to read it.

I want to know how he did that!

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?
I have a long answer, but I’ll keep this one short. Just write. Observations, musings, feelings, write it all down. The more you do that, the more you’ll get comfortable with your voice. The technical stuff can suck the life out of your writing like a starving vampire. Find your style and voice before that happens.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.
Go to Ireland. and see the places my Nana and Papa were born and raised in.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?
I`m absolutely dying to get my hands on a paperback copy of Beyond the Never. It`s an anthology by the five ‘first wave’ authors at CH&BB. The cover is gorgeous and the concept behind the stories has me in awe. Unfortunately, my TBR pile is somewhere around 45 books deep already, so even when I get a copy, it’s going to be a while before I get to read it.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Two things, if I may.

For the readers: If you pick up a copy of Learn To Love Me, please let me know what you think. I live for feedback! In fact, one of my favourite things to hear from readers, is their guesses on the ‘bad guy’ while they’re still reading, and if they change their mind as the story progresses. Reviews are always appreciated, of course. I think the same goes for any writer, really. I have yet to meet an author who doesn’t pray, every day, for a new review.

He is damaged beneath his confident good looks and need for control, and in some way, I feel he needs me. I need him.

More About IF I WERE YOU

How it began….

One day I was a high school teacher on summer break, leading a relatively uneventful but happy life. Or so I told myself. Later, I’d question that, as I would question pretty much everything I knew about me, my relationships, and my desires. It all began when my neighbor thrust a key to a storage unit at me. She’d bought it to make extra money after watching some storage auction show. Now she was on her way to the airport to elope with a man she barely knew, and she needed me to clear out the unit before the lease expires.

Soon, I was standing inside a small room that held the intimate details of another woman’s life, feeling uncomfortable , as if I was invading her privacy. Why had she let these items so neatly packed, possessions that she clearly cared about deeply, be lost at an auction? Driven to find out by some unnamed force, I began to dig, to discover this woman’s life, and yes, read her journals—-dark, erotic journals that I had no business reading. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. I read on obsessively, living out fantasies through her words that I’d never dare experience on my own, compelled by the three men in her life, none of whom had names. I read onward until the last terrifying dark entry left me certain that something had happened to this woman. I had to find her and be sure she was okay.

Before long, I was taking her job for the summer at the art gallery, living her life, and she was nowhere to be found. I was becoming someone I didn’t know. I was becoming her…

The dark, passion it becomes…

Now, I am working at a prestigious gallery, where I have always dreamed of being, and I’ve been delivered to the doorstep of several men, all of which I envision as one I’ve read about in the journal. But there is one man that will call to me, that will awaken me in ways I never believed possible. That man is the ruggedly sexy artist, Chris Merit, who wants to paint me. He is rich and famous, and dark in ways I shouldn’t find intriguing, but I do. I so do. I don’t understand why his dark side appeals to me, but the attraction between us is rich with velvety promises of satisfaction. Chris is dark, and so are his desires, but I cannot turn away. He is damaged beneath his confident good looks and need for control, and in some way, I feel he needs me. I need him.

All I know for certain is that he knows me like I don’t even know me, and he says I know him. Still, I keep asking myself — do I know him? Did he know her, the journal writer, and where is she? And why doesn’t it seem to matter anymore? There is just him and me, and the burn for more.

Excerpt:

Rounding the corner, I enter the hallway, and Chris is suddenly there in the narrow passage with me, pressing me against the wall, his powerful thighs framing mine.

My hand goes instinctively to his t-shirt-clad chest. I am immediately aware of the intimacy of the touch, of my body’s reaction to the man who has betrayed me. “Don’t shove me against another wall and try to intimidate me, Chris.”

“I’m not trying to intimidate you. I was protecting you, Sara.” His hands move to my waist, scorching me, and my reaction to the sizzling touch is instant. I cover his hands with mine, trying to control what he does next, but it doesn’t help. Now, my hands are on his hands and his hands are on my body.

“Call it what you want,” I ground out, “but you had no right to do what you did.”

“He had to know he couldn’t manipulate your dream. Money, and my many resources at your disposal, does that.”

His words knock my anger and my breath away, and confusion consumes me. His actions and his words conflict at every turn. “Why would you help me? You said I don’t belong in this world.”

“Because I won’t watch him gobble you up and destroy you.”

I remember his words, and understand now that he wanted me out of this gallery, not this profession. “Because he’s a dark, messed up, arrogant asshole who will play with my mind and use me until there is nothing else left of me I recognize.”

“That’s right.”

“And yet you say you’re worse.”

He stiffens and cuts his gaze, seeming to struggle before fixing me in a turbulent stare. “I am, Sara, which is why you should run as far away from me as you can. And I should step back and let you.”

“Then why aren’t you?” I whisper.

His eyes hold mine, and what I see there, the depth of his desire, overwhelms me. He flattens his palm on my belly and I tremble beneath the touch, and he has to feel it too. “Because,” his voice low, seductive, his hand traveling up the center of my body, “I can’t stop thinking about you, and everything I want to do to you, everywhere I want to touch you.”

His hand presses to the swell between my breasts, and my nipples ache with a wish he would touch them. His boldness ignites something sultry and dark inside me, a side of me that defies the good-girl school teacher who is appalled I haven’t stopped this. I want him. I want him here and now, and any way I can have him.

And when his gaze lowers to my mouth and lingers, I know he is thinking about kissing me and I have never wanted to be kissed so badly in my life.

“Do you taste as good as I think you do?” he asks, but he doesn’t wait for my reply.

Suddenly, his fingers have tunneled into my hair and he’s dragging my mouth to his. I am all soft submission, yielding to the moment, to the man. I melt into him, welcome the hardness of his body pressed to mine. And when his tongue presses past my lips, a long, wicked caress, I taste his hunger, his need. There is possessiveness to his kiss, to his hand on my back, molding me closer. I am lost in the ache that has become my need for this man, this stranger I cannot resist. He says he’s protecting me; he says he’s dangerous. I am conflicted, and sure I should be angry with him, but I am completely incapable and unable of processing why.

Interview with Monique O’Connor James

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to have Monique O’Connor James on the blog today to chat about her newest book “Becoming Jolie”

Monique, can you please share with us a little about yourself

I’m the mom of two beautiful children who married my high school sweetheart.  I work full time in insurance, but I love to write!  Currently, all of my stories are YA and Adult Paranormal fiction/romance.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

For as long as I can remember!

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

I think it’s pretty odd that sometimes I have to write long-hand and then go back and type it.  It really is a mood thing, because other times I can type straight on the computer.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

Becoming Jolie is about a small, fictional town in Louisiana were several children have gone missing.  The town’s people are haunted by the ghosts of their children and Jolie thinks they are all crazy.   However, she’s pulled into Follett’s story via her dreams and ties to the place she didn’t know existed.  Throw in a love triangle and the story is really creepy and exciting!

How did you come with the idea for this story?

In 2010, I decided I was going to participate in NANOWRIMO for the first time.  (National Novel writing month in November).  On October 31, I was still looking for something to write about.  I read a blog about a playground in Alabama called The Dead Children’s Playground.  It inspired me to create a town haunted by the ghosts of their missing children.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I have another book available July 5th called, The Watchers.  It is the follow up to my novel The Keepers about fallen angels in New Orleans.    I’m also working on the first novel in a series about Witches called Magia Rising!

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

You know, it’s more important to me to meet the indie authors out there and hear their success stories than it is to meet someone who has already made it.   I think the people who are out there really pushing their work and never giving up are the most fascinating.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Don’t quit!  There will always be people out there who want to rain on your parade because they can’t step outside of their comfort zone.  Just remember you don’t need anyone’s permission to make things happen.  When you fall, get up and start over again!  There are lots of people out there going through the same thing that will hold you up!

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

I’d like to sky dive.  Of course, I couldn’t tell my dad until after it was done.  I do wonder if I could go through with it once I was up there!

Prologue

123 A.D. A hidden cavern near the waters of the Blue Grotto in Italy.

Tamar shivered with her twelve companions. They were about to attempt their most daring incantation. An opening at the top of the cavern allowed the light from the full moon to shine down on them, illuminating their secret gathering and adding its own power to the unfolding ritual.

Salt water splashed on her from a waterfall in the nearby pool. They’d searched for the water of immortality, a legend that had spread since before her birth. Far and wide, people had spoken of water that could make a person eternal and young.

But it wasn’t the water that conferred immortality. It was the creatures that lived inside the water. They were transparent and hard to see, with spongy tops and long tendrils on the bottom that could sting if you got too close. They didn’t die. Instead, they could age backward, reaching the end of their life, and then, without dying, start over again.

“We’ll freeze to death if you don’t hurry.” Tamar glared at the man in the middle of the circle. The irony of freezing to death while seeking immortality caused her to stifle a dark laugh.

“The potion must be altered with other ingredients unless you want to come back as a newborn each time. You’ll find that frustrating,” Jacob said. He was their leader and the best with potions.

Tamar made a face, but huddled closer to her sister, Naomi, for warmth. A circle of salt had been poured around them. Candles were already lit. A large stone had become a makeshift table upon which the coven leader worked. The sea creatures had been pulverized and added to an iron pot. He poured the herbal infusions into the potion.

Jacob passed a sharp knife to the person on his left. “Each of us must contribute blood to the potion or it will fail. The magic is in this creature, but they have no blood. Our blood must bond with this animal if we hope to succeed.”

“Are you sure that’s necessary?” Naomi asked. Tamar nodded her agreement. Cutting themselves and mixing their blood seemed extreme. What would be the consequences of linking together eternally?

“I am sure,” Jacob said, losing patience with their squeamishness. Magic like this had a price, and they all knew it. But the consequences always showed themselves when it was too late.

One by one they sliced the center of their palms with the ritual knife and added their blood. Jacob stirred the concoction with a wooden spoon; it smelled like death. When he was finished, he dipped a silver goblet into the brew.

“We each drink and then we chant,” he said, passing the goblet.

Tamar couldn’t help feeling pride at the chant she’d written. When they’d all drunk, they clasped hands and turned their faces up to the moonlight. The cavern echoed their words back to them. “Da immortalitatem. Renatus sine oblitus. Numquam moriens. Da immortalitatem. Renatus sine oblitus. Numquam moriens…”

And then they all died.

Tamar jolted as oxygen flooded into her body. Something felt very strange. Had the spell worked? She glanced around at her companions, each of them coming back to life one by one.

“We’re all children.”

Chapter One

Golatha Falls, Georgia. The Present.

Tam perched on the bar stool in her kitchen, still as death. Her third cup of Earl Grey tea cooled on the counter, ignored. Normally the warm brew calmed her nerves, but nothing would comfort her today.

She’d read her tarot cards, tea leaves, and scried with a bowl of water and sea salt. Everything she tried gave her the same morbid story. The death card glared back at her, mocking, and though she’d told many others—sometimes truthfully, sometimes not so much—that the death card didn’t always mean death, she knew this card said her number was up.

Jack—as Jacob was called now—was back, and he was after her. She fought to keep the tremor out of her hand as she raised the tea to her lips. He wouldn’t offer her a quick death. It would involve a cold stone slab, bleeding to death, and having vital organs removed. Ritualistic, because ritual was how you got the most effect out of stealing a fellow magic user’s power.

Tam had considered herself a cycler since the night she was reborn in that cavern nearly two thousand years ago. True to Jack’s word, each time they died, they came right back in their own younger body, looking for all the world to be about twelve years old—an inconvenience to say the least. Tam had been shuffled from orphanage to orphanage each time she began a new life cycle.

This last time she’d gotten lucky and been adopted by a well-to-do family who had taken her in and put her through a good school. The thought was nice, though pointless, given how many times she’d already suffered through school.

Cyclers kept their memories, their sense of continuity. They were effectively immortal, just like the rare breed of jellyfish they’d discovered so long ago.

Jack had only been actively hunting the other cyclers for a few centuries. He’d gone power hungry, convinced he could stop the cycle altogether and achieve true immortality by draining the power of his coven. Magic users aged differently—the more magic, the longer they could live. But it wasn’t just that. She knew him. He had an angle—something more than a personal quest for immortality.

If murder was his new hobby, his purpose for gaining all that power couldn’t be good. If he was going to get her anyway, suicide seemed the smarter option. It would free her to be reborn the normal way and keep her safe from a more brutal death at Jack’s hands.

But it wasn’t so simple. There were two ways she could die for real—and two ways only: at the hands of another cycler, or through magical means by a very old preternatural being, such as a demon or vampire at least a few thousand years old. Those were hard to come by, and their killing methods were usually too creative for Tam’s taste. She wanted to break the cycle, not be tortured.

Either way, she’d managed, through this latest cycle, to stifle the suicidal urge. Until now.

The image of the demon she’d chosen formed in her mind. Cain. The very first incubus. If he couldn’t kill her, nobody could. And he hated her. It should be simple enough to get him to agree, assuming she could find him. She’d dropped him in front of his badass pals a couple of times already with energy balls. He was probably plotting her death at this very moment.

Anna might know where to find him, since she was mated to a demon, but Tam hadn’t seen her best friend in three months. It wasn’t as if Tam had directions to the demon portals or a way to get through to their dimension even if she did. If Anna surfaced in the human dimension, Tam could do a spell to locate her, but who could say when that would happen? And would it be before Jack reached her?

Deep in her gut, she knew she was going to die—either by Cain’s hand or by Jack’s. As arrogant as the bastard was, Cain’s methods would at least be pleasurable. Bleeding out and organ removal versus orgasms. Gee, how do I decide? They both sound so glamorous and exciting.

Cain snarled as he passed through the portal point into Cary Town, Washington. The filmy dimensional doorway shimmered and then fizzled out of existence as he moved through the forest away from it. He couldn’t believe he’d allowed himself to be summoned by the vampire king. Half-breeds.

He’d thought his business with Anthony was finished when Cain had delivered his don’t mess with us again or there will be a war speech the last time they’d met. But now there was a bigger evil brewing, something that risked the living standards of all the factions—and possibly their lives.

Even his newly turned succubus and her werewolf mate would be at the meeting, which was going to be awkward to say the least, given that they all hated Anthony. And the feeling was mutual. How this was going to go with everybody in one room, he couldn’t say. Officially, the werewolf pack was banished from Cary Town. If someone saw them slinking through the night to Anthony’s penthouse, things would get entertaining.

The demon nodded at the guardian in the lobby of the Cary Town Luxury Apartments. This meeting was being kept on the down-low. The Preternatural Council had been shut out. Even most of the vampire king’s coven didn’t know he was fraternizing with the enemy and holding a secret meeting in his former penthouse residence. Cain stepped onto the elevator and pulled out the key he’d been given to gain access to the sixth floor.

The door at the end of the hall was answered by a vampire who looked more like a butler. “They’re on the roof by the pool, sir.”

Cain took the stairs two at a time. His presence announced itself as the metal door clanged against the brick. All eyes went to him, and he smirked.

“Well, well, looks like the gang’s all here.” And what a motley crew they were.

Anthony stood at one end of the table beside an overhead projector and portable screen that had been plugged into an outlet embedded in the brick.

At the table were several familiar faces. Beside Anthony was his human mate, Charlee. Coming around the table was Cain’s brother, Luc, and his annoying mate, Anna. Then there was Jane, the new succubus who was mated to Cole, the Cary Town werewolf pack alpha. The rest, he didn’t know.

“You’re late,” Anthony said, bristling. “We’ve been waiting, and Charlotte needs her rest. The baby takes a lot out of her.”

Cain’s eyes cut to the vampire’s mate. She was so pregnant she’d pop any day now. If this meeting was about her and her spawn, heads were going to roll. If he didn’t care about a half-breed, he sure as hell didn’t care about a quarter-breed.

“I was detained. These things happen. Lovely little school teacher. I made some third graders very happy today. Or they’ll be happy tomorrow, anyway.”

Cole growled from his seat beside Jane. “You killed a woman, you mean.”

Cain chuckled. “My god, man, what is it with you and this obsession with killing? Which one of us is the demon? Perhaps amongst your kind third graders are happy when their teacher dies. She’s… just a little spent. She’ll have to take a sick day tomorrow.”

He dropped into a chair at the end of the table where he could most easily glare at and annoy Anthony. Since Cain wasn’t killing him right now, annoying him would be the second best thing. He didn’t like that Anthony was in charge of this meeting. The vampire king was practically a child next to Cain’s eight thousand years. It should be seniority rule.

The vampire cleared his throat. “Sitting next to you is Father Hadrian who is one of mine… And over here is our resident sorcerer, Dayne, and his lovely werecat, Greta.” Anthony leered at the brunette beside the sorcerer and Greta gripped Dayne’s hand tighter.

“Therian, not werecat! You know I hate that term,” Greta hissed.

“Whether you like it or not, it’s accurate.”

“Really, Anthony?” Charlee said, an irritated expression on her face at her mate’s goading.

The vampire chuckled. “What? Is it my fault your friend is so easy to mess with?”

He took a clear plastic sheet with writing on it and placed it on the overhead projector. “I apologize for being so vague as to the purpose of this meeting. Half of you are officially enemies, but if I go to the Preternatural Council with this, my vampires will all know, and I’m not prepared for it to go public yet. We can go back to hating each other after we’ve eliminated the threat.”

Anthony flipped on the light of the projector, and an electric buzz filled the silence. “I had this letter reproduced onto a transparency for our purposes. In case the context doesn’t spell it out to you, we’ve been contacted by Jack the Ripper. He’s still alive, and he’s one of us.”

“You couldn’t just use a computer program?” the werewolf asked. Cole was the most tech-savvy of the group.

“Don’t try, it won’t get you anywhere,” Charlee said.

Dear Boss,

I’m back. You didn’t take the threat seriously last time. Shame on you. Did you not understand my joke? It wasn’t for the common people. It was for the others. Was “from Hell” not a big enough clue? It’s where we all are, after all.

When I’ve killed the other cyclers, I’ll change the world. There are 13 of us, a perfect coven. The first kill was an accident, the second an experiment. Whitechapel was only three. You were wrong. It wasn’t five. Those and others were copycats all wanting Ripper’s glory.

Since then, there have been four more, but I’ve been quiet as a mouse, giggling at my funny little games. With you in power, I thought I’d make this interesting. Only three left to kill; catch me first or Hell is mine.

Yours Truly,

The Cycler

Don’t mind the new trade name. The old one was stale, and this one will give you something new to chew on. A new mystery to solve. Do better this time. The stakes are higher now.

P.S. Have fun when the human media gets this letter. I’ll give you a head start. Tick, tock.
