Book Blitz: In The Red by Selah Janel

In the Red

What kind of a rock star lives in a small town in the middle of nowhere and plays at weddings and funerals? That’s what Jeremiah Kensington is thinking after an unsuccessful bar gig one night. Then Jack Scratch comes into his life, ready to represent him and launch him to stardom. Jack can give him everything: a new band, a new name, a new life, a new look, and new boots…although they aren’t exactly new. They once belonged to The One, a rocker so legendary and so mysterious that it’s urban legend that he used black magic to gain success. But what does Jeremiah care about urban legend? And it’s probably just coincidence that the shoes make him dance better than anyone, even if it doesn’t always feel like he’s controlling his movements. It’s no big deal that he plunges into a world of excess and decadence as soon as he puts the shoes on his feet, right?

But what happens when they refuse to come off?

Excerpt:

They’re mine. I’m really holding them, Jeremiah realized. I’m holding history that isn’t supposed to exist. When The One took the stage, any competition turned tail and ran. It was said that the one time the singer revealed what he looked like the crowds were moved to tears by his beauty and sophistication, and tore each other apart because they couldn’t get to him. Some said it was a conspiracy that complete copies of his songs didn’t exist because the music was too potent to release to the public. There were people who still worshipped the mystery, the music, the outfits, and the boots.

And now those people would come to him.

“Go on. Try them on,” Jack encouraged. Jeremiah nodded and carefully put the platforms on the floor. Shaking with nerves, the youth sat and guided his feet into the cherry red sheaths. Electricity crackled along his instep and through his toes. He tugged the vinyl up over his calf and gasped. Jeremiah was overtaken by a sudden burn, a sudden ant-crawling of power that worked its way through his skin and into his very soul.

“What the—” he choked. The plastic spasmed, tightened around his foot, and then relaxed. The left boot stretched itself a little higher up his calf and extended its sole and heel a little more to adapt to his needs. Jeremiah thought he had imagined it, but the right boot immediately followed suit. The matching sets of the laces squirmed and rippled, settling into a slightly different pattern than when they were taken out of their box. A quick look around proved that while everyone in the room was looking, Jack was the only other person that actually saw. “Did they just…?” Jeremiah couldn’t bring himself to say something so bizarre. He barely managed to hold back a cry when a thousand tiny needle teeth nibbled his skin from toes to knees. A tingling sensation spread under his skin and Jeremiah was filled with a rush of violent confidence that almost made him swoon.

“Good. They fit,” Jack said. Only his tiny, mysteriously cruel little smile hinted that he was aware of the boots’ strange behavior.

The longer Jeremiah looked at himself the more he realized that he could do no wrong. My life just changed. With these on my feet, my past is gone. I’m going to be better than I ever thought possible.

All around him the yes-men and hangers-on gaped.

“You look so good!” the store footman practically swooned. His vinyl and lace frock coat danced under the fluttering movements of his hands. His sharp, pale face flushed with excitement underneath the stylized Victorian wig.

“I’m gonna cry you look so good!” the blonde assistant squealed, gripping Jack’s knee as if she’d keel over if she didn’t have it there to support her. “It’s like I’m witnessing history!”

The faces that surround him were positively thunderstruck and at his mercy. The camera kept right on clicking. Jeremiah got to his feet and struck a few more ambitious poses, dropping into a low crouch before kicking a leg up in an insane bastardization of a round kick.  It didn’t matter that he’d grown up looking like every other average guy in Middle America. It didn’t matter that he’d been more accustomed to cotton T-shirts and washed-out blue jeans than the clothes Jack had him wearing. The overall look wasn’t complete, but the boots pulled everything together. The added height evened out his lanky proportions. In some unlikely way the platforms made his stubble-sporting, angular face look downright exotic. His eyes blazed liquid brown heat and his dishwater hair almost glowed under the dressing room lights.

Jeremiah sashayed around the tiny space and leapt onto the low podium at the room’s center, full of a burning drive to do something. He wanted to sing. He wanted to rock. He wanted to dance, and he’d never had that sort of urge before in his life. Every school dance he’d ever gone to had involved him either playing in the band or drinking contraband beverages with his friends outside the building. “Guess I’m a natural!” he laughed. He knew he was lying, Jack knew he was lying, but there was no reason for anyone else to know the truth. Why bother with the truth when the image in the mirror was so much better?

He had expected his balance to be shaky in the tall platforms, but it was like the boots were built for him. He hadn’t thought to check the size. Maybe The One wasn’t the original owner; maybe they conformed to whoever wore them. Jeremiah’s face glowed when he looked at his mirror image. His reflection looked as giddy and ecstatic as he felt. Why do I care what they are? If they work, they work! His eyes dropped to the new footwear. He was just able to see the tiny, warped image of his face in the shiny toes. Everything’s going to be amazing from now on. As he admired his distorted image via his feet,  all of his hang-ups and personality drained out of him. Who needs a personality with boots like these?

Jack Scratch watched his protégé glided round the room, that same tiny, dangerous smile just barely curling his full mouth. “Just think. What you have on represents everything that you want to be,” he coached. His words drilled through the rocker’s ears and hardwired themselves into the deepest parts of Jeremiah’s heart and soul. “They’re everything you want on your side. These boots are temptation and chaos, just like you. I’ve got it,” he declared. “I’ve got your name.”

“Give it to me,” a raspy voice in front of the mirror breathed.

“Forget Jeremiah Kensington: folk singer, blue jean rocker, country boy, small town loser,” Jack breathed, his giant hands fervently patting down his front until he found which jacket pocket his cigarettes were hidden in. It was amazing that he didn’t gouge himself in the chest given the sharpened tip of the massive silver ring that enveloped his right forefinger. The manager leaned back against the sofa and lit up, never once taking his eyes off his new golden boy and meal ticket. “From now on you are J.K. Asmodeus, rock star and corrupter of the masses.” A thin plume of smoke stretched up to frame his intense expression.

J.K. looked from Jack to the man in the mirror, saw how the red glitter of the boots was echoed in his eyes. “Yes.”

The two ignored the gasps and commentary around them as everyone texted photos and alerted the necessary paparazzi. The pair shared a slow smile as Jack inhaled another draw of nicotine. “It’s time to sign,” he murmured. The smoke crept in front of his face and turned his pleased expression into something that bordered on animalistic. He removed the top sheet of the stack he’d been examining and held it out to the younger man.

I should wait and consult a lawyer. I should take my time. These things need to be done with care, a distant echo of a Midwestern conscience chided. J.K. ignored it, grinned back at his manager, and reached for the fountain pen the manager handed him. His expression was almost as malevolent as Jack’s, though there were still traces of wholesomeness that had yet to drain away. “Let’s do it.”

About the Author:

Selah Janel has been blessed with a giant imagination since she was little and convinced that fairies lived in the nearby state park or vampires hid in the abandoned barns outside of town. Her appreciation for a good story was enhanced by a love of reading, the many talented storytellers that surrounded her, and a healthy curiosity for everything. A talent for warping everything she learned didn’t hurt, either. She gravitates to writing fantasy and horror, but can be convinced to pursue any genre if the idea is good enough. Often her stories feature the unknown creeping into the “real” world and she loves to find the magical in the mundane.

She has four e-books with No Boundaries Press, including the historical vampire story ‘Mooner’ and the contemporary short ‘The Other Man’.  Her work has also been included in ‘The MacGuffin’, ‘The Realm Beyond’, ‘Stories for Children Magazine’, and the upcoming Wicked East Press anthology ‘Bedtime Stories for Girls’. She likes her music to rock, her vampires lethal, her fairies to play mind games, and her princesses to hold their own.

Interview with Honey Jans

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome back Honey Jans to the blog to talk about her latest release Ride A Cowboy, Save a Horse

Honey for those who missed you the first time can you please share with us a little about yourself.   I’m romance author Honey Jans. I’m a small town girl from Wisconsin with a big imagination. I guess you could say that I’m a natural born romantic who tends to daydream. Sometimes it gets me into trouble. But on the plus side it sparks my vivid and sometimes kinky imagination. I love writing erotic romance and it’s my fervent hope that readers will enjoy my books. So stick around. Check out my red hot covers…some of those cover models are truly drool worthy. Read my excerpts, and enter my giveaways. I hope well be friends. I’d love to hear from all my readers. Feel free to post on my blog.

Have you always wanted to be an author?  Actually I’m a late bloomer.  I’ve always loved to read but never thought to write until my sister gave me two bags full of her cast off romances.  Well after wading through the stack I thought maybe I could write one.  Of course it wasn’t that easy but there isn’t anything else I’d rather be doing.

Can you share with us your typical writing day.  Is there anything you have to have while writing? I typically write in the mornings and edit in the afternoons.  And I love to start my sessions with a steaming cup of my favorite coffee.

Most challenging or rewarding part of writing? The challenging part is staring at that blank screen and wondering what comes next.  The rewarding part is feedback from my readers through my blog, emails, or at book signings and tours.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?  I actually have several.

RIDE A COWBOY; SAVE A HORSE from Red Rose Publishing –Savanna Brown returns to Wyoming to save the reputation of the cowboy she ran away from on their wedding night. She makes the ranch owner an offer he can’t refuse if he wants to hang onto his ranch. She’ll pretend to come back to him until the talk dies down, then she’ll be on her way. Rafe Halliday is thrilled that his plan to lure his bride back to his place has worked. Now all he has to do is focus on getting sexy Savanna back into his bed where he figured their links of passion, love, and sex will complete their bond. But will love happen with evil forces trying to tear them apart? To find out lasso a copy of, “Save a Horse; Ride a Cowboy,” today. It’s sure to singe your lariat.

How did you come with the idea for this story? Ride a Cowboy; Save a Horse came from the opening line that popped in my head one day at work.  It just pestered me until I had to write it down and build a story around it.

Can you share with us your current work in progress? I have an upcoming release with three of my colleagues, Debi Wilder, Shari Dare, Lynn Crain.  This paranormal erotic romance series was inspired by the Beast of Bray Road a myth that lives in the Kettle Moraine Forest of Wisconsin.  It’s really special and I hope you’ll give it a try.

BLUE MOON MAGIC

One father.  Two mothers.  Four siblings.  One incredible night that will change them all forever.

I also have another work in progress that’s a bit of a departure for me.  The working title is Bayou Heat and it’s a ménage with a suspense twist.  When this story came to me I just had to write it.  In hoping my readers will enjoy coming along for the ride.

Who are some of your favorite authors?  I have so many it’s hard to narrow it down.  I love Ann Rice, Sherylinn Kenyon, JA Konrath, and Jayne Ann Krentz for starters.

Do you feel that any of your favorite authors have inspired your writing style?  They may have inspired me but my voice is all me.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?  My To Be Read Pile consists of anything by my favorite authors.  I’m constantly looking for new releases.  One thing I really would love is another book by Bob Mayor and Jennifer Cruise like Agnes and the Hitman.  It loved that book and hope there will be more from them.  I also loved Toni Marie Causeys Bobby Faye series and hope for some sequels.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Simply that I’m pleased to be here and I’d like to thank everyone for stopping by.

Kelly’s review of Instant Gratification by Jill Shalvis

TITLE: Instant Gratification – Wilder #2
AUTHOR: Jill Shalvis
Charcters: Stone Wilder & Emma Sinclair
PUBLICATION DATE: 07/01/09
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
In Instant Attraction, Jill Shalvis introduced Cameron, Stone, and T.J.; the sexy, daredevil brothers who run Wilder Adventures. And for Stone Wilder, the thrill of a lifetime is about to arrive in a surprising package. . .

The Doctor Is In Deep
Wishful, California, is 3000 miles from Dr. Emma Sinclair’s last job in a New York City ER. It may as well be another galaxy. Here, running her father’s clinic for a summer, Emma treats bee stings, stomach flu, and the occasional pet cat. Plus, she has to contend with patients like Stone Wilder: gorgeous, laid-back, and irritating beyond belief. The man laughs at her. A lot. And Emma loathes him. All except that tiny part of her that wants to throw him on her examining table and break every doctor-patient rule in the book. . .
When Stone tries to help Emma learn to loosen up a bit, he pictures white-water rafting or scenic mountain hikes. Not a mind-blowing affair that shakes them both to the core. Emma’s sure she has no place in a town like Wishful, but Stone knows different. Emma belongs here – in this town, in his life. And convincing this strong-minded, stubborn, sexy woman of that fact will be a challenge no Wilder man could resist

REVIEW:
I have to say first I am a huge fan of Jill Shalvis and I am totally in love with her Lucky Harbor and Animal Magnetism series. So I was super excited to get a chance to read Instant Gratification book two in her Wilder Series. Jill originally released The Wilder Series back in 2009 and just released the series in 2012.

While I really enjoyed Stone and Emma’s story. I was not totally sucked into the world to the point of being obsessed like the other series have done. But I still really liked the book and very glad that I read. Stone is dreamy and yummy. Emma is tough as nails and a very good fit for Stone.

I am planning on going back and reading book one and three in this series. I really do like the Wilder boys and want to learn more of them .

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. The following review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

My fascination with Vampires by Lola James

Ok, I’ll admit it I wish I had fangs because vampires rock! My love affair with vampires started with Sesame Street, yes, I said it Sesame Street. I met Count von Count when I was about two years old and it was love at first count. He even had fangs (take that Stephenie Meyer).

As I grew older (meaning about eight) I found a little gem in syndication called Dark Shadows. Oh how I loved this show. The main character Barnabas Collins was this creepy yet romantic vampire. I’m so excited to see the remake with Johnny Deep as Barnabas!

My parents swore I was too young to see Bram Stoker’s Dracula, but we had cable so I waited patiently for it to come on and it did and it was awesome! That movie still gives me the chills.

I was compelled by the beauty of Brad Pitt as Louis de Pointe du Lac in Interview with a Vampire. This is really what kick started my fascination (sorry Count). I read the book more times than I can remember and watched the movie more time than I’d admit! It is love and tragedy at its best!

I struck gold with the Movie and T.V. show Buffy the Vampire. I fell in love with Angel the same time Buffy did on the show. Again, other movies came out but none that stuck with me.

Dracula 2000 was good not as good as Bram Stoker’s Dracula but nonetheless it introduced me to Gerard Butler. Then there was nothing, absolutely nothing, except for Van Helsing, Blade’s and other movies, but I was never into the slaying of vampires unless it was Buffy doing the slaying.

I had all but forgotten about my love affair with Vampires until 2008. 2008 belonged to the Vampire. True Blood came on and bless HBO for that. To describe True Blood in a word Awesome! There fangs that retract, there’s blood, love, love triangles, werewolves, and Eric, oh Eric! I Love that show… can you tell! Being Human was also introduced on BBC (and now SyFy), Aidan so sweet and scary at the same time. The Vampire Diaries, who doesn’t love the Salvatore brothers (especially Damon) and their love triangle. And last but not least Twilight and the Vampire’s that sparkle. I was in vampire overload and one happy girl!

You could say this vampire-loving girl is in heaven. I mean, since 2008 I have had my fix with Vampire T.V. shows, movies, and books, oh the books. Books well I’ll keep that topic for another day and another post!

A little bit about Lola James:

Lola James has been reading romance novels since her teens, and fell in love with the paranormal after discovering Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles. Her love of the dark worlds of vampires and witches, as well as her fascination with Greek mythology led her to create the Spellbound Series, an ongoing Paranormal Romance combining all of the above into tales of suspense with a little bit of humor in an Urban Fantasy setting.

A long time lover of reading and writing with a passion for a great story, James became discouraged by the complicated and arbitrary publishing process, James had initially set down her laptop and her hopes of being a writer. However, with the purchase of her first e-reader, James became re-energized by the new possibilities for an undiscovered author to reach the masses. Dusting off her keyboard she finally finished Bound to Remember, the first book of the Spellbound Series and self-published it. Energized and ambitious, James is now hard at work on both the Spellbound Series as well as the Fate Series, a paranormal romance about dreams and what happens if they come true.

Living in Southern California with her two beautiful children, James finds time to write in between her full-time job as a mother as well as her other full-time job as an HR manager, as well as her academic schedule as she studies for her Master’s degree which she hopes to complete in 2013. With the success of Bound to Remember, James hopes to continue to reach an audience that will allow her to leave her HR job and focus on her writing as a full time career.

Can Raja and Bethany join focuses with the other elders of the Alaskan Tigers to bring down the rogue shifter? Or will the rogue destroy all Raja serves to protect?

Excerpt:

The table was cluttered with papers and maps, and their search for Pierce was underway. Information was slowly trickling in. They had men following up on leads, searching known vacations spots for Pierce and his gang. Most of the leads turned out to be dead ends, but still they followed up with everything, as the one lead they didn’t pursue would be the key to finding the rogue shifters.

The anxiety of the situation ate away at Raja’s gut, while Ty’s shown on his face. They seemed no closer to finding Pierce, yet they could feel his men were in the mountains watching them. His assassin teams were stalking the area, waiting for them. With the danger surrounding rarely did anyone leave the compound, especially not the women and children.

“Raja, stop pacing. You’re going to wear a hole in my favorite rug,” Tabitha teased, watching him over her coffee mug as he paced the study.

He smiled, unable to help it. Tabitha always had a way of lightening the mood. When I find my mate I hope she is able to make me smile the way Tabitha can. This woman has been through so much, yet she still is more concerned about the people around her than herself.

“You know I’m good for another one.” He couldn’t sit still. The hairs on the back of his neck stood at attention with the knowledge that something wasn’t right. He could feel in his soul that something was going to happen. Pierce would make a move before long, but what would that move be?

“I received word before coming over that Leo and Connor arrived in California and were on their way to locate Pierce’s sister. It’s extremely unlikely that he’s there, but maybe she’ll be able to tell us something.” He ran his hand over the windowsill. Outside looked like a winter wonderland. Everything was covered in a thick, white snow, with even more snow forecast for the next few days.

“Keep me apprised on the situation. I want them back within seventy-two hours, or we send in another team. We don’t have the time to waste on this,” Ty said, looking up from his e-tablet, where he was reading the reports from the teams trying to track Pierce and his clan. Teams were all over the country, yet no one had seen hide or hair of Pierce and his men. It wasn’t surprising that Pierce knew they were searching for him, but they didn’t expect Pierce to run and hide. Maybe the fact that his days were numbered, for the murder and attacks on other tiger shifters, had him scared.

Raja nodded, still gazing out the window.

“I need to go speak with some of the guards. Raja, could you look after Tabby until I get back? I don’t want to leave her alone in case there’s another attack.”

“Sure.”

“Thank you.” Ty rose, kissing her on the cheek as he did. “I shouldn’t be long, love.”

Once they were alone Raja heard Tabitha’s chair push back from the table, her sock-covered feet padding toward him.

“Raja, are you okay?” She laid her hand on his back as if she could give him the comfort she was able to give Ty. Unfortunately, it only worked on a mate, but the caring gesture touched him.

“I’m fine. You have enough to worry about; there is no need to be concerned about me. I’m fine.” Even he could hear the uncertainty in his voice—there was no doubt she could.

“I don’t believe you. If you ever need to talk, I’m here. It will go no further than us.”

“Mates don’t keep things from each other.” The reservation was thick in his voice.

“To help a friend in need I would do what needs to be done. Raja, I haven’t known you very long, but I consider you a part of my family and can see your pain.” She ran her hand over his back.

“Thank you, but everything is fine with me. It’s you I’m worried about. I can feel something bad is coming.” He wasn’t being entirely honest. There was something bothering him, but he couldn’t put his finger on it, let alone put it into words to tell his Queen.

“We’ll get through it. We know Pierce is still out there and after me. He has a larger following then we guessed. I know it’s your job as our Lieutenant to worry, but we’ll get through this.”

The invisible ear bud allowing him contact with command central and the ground teams sprang to life. “Breach. We have a breach at the main gate. All available units respond.”

“Shit. Where’s Felix?”

“Ty gave him the morning off since we were meeting with you and wouldn’t be leaving our quarters.” Tabitha joined him at the window. “Go. I’ll be fine.”

“Like hell I will. You have to be protected.” She had her own transmitter, allowing her to know what was happening, and he could feel her fear spilling off her.

“Raja, stay where you are. Felix is on his way. I’m proceeding toward the main gate,” Ty’s voice came through the transmitter.

“Be safe,” Tabitha whispered.

“Tabitha, come away from the window. Everyone always forgets about the windows. You feel safe and secure inside the houses, while the sharpshooter is just waiting. Waiting for you to walk past the window.”

He could feel her reluctance but his job was to keep her safe, not allow her to stand in front of the window for a glimpse of what might be happening. Unlike the other guards, his vow wasn’t made because she was their Female Alpha or because she was the Queen of the Tigers. No, his vow was made for Ty. Ty had saved his ass more than once, and the best way to show his appreciation for it was to keep Ty’s mate safe.

Her writing buddies Max (a cocker spaniel) and Dawne (a beagle mix) are always around to listen to me bounce ideas off them. They might not be able to answer, but they are helpful in their own ways.

Interview & giveaway with Nana Malone

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Nana Malone to the blog today

Nana, can you please share with us a little about yourself

Oh I’m just your average Ghanaian/American girl who lives in sunny San Diego with an American husband who thinks my family is crazy.  My Big Fat Greek Wedding has nothing on us.  In my infinite spare time, I chase around my two year old trying to tame her wild mane of hair, try and corral my spunky Scottie and occasionally let my hubby pamper me.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Nope.  Way back when I wanted to be an MTV  VJ.  It wasn’t’ until 12 years ago that I actually thought that I could do this as a profession.

Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

Right now Sylvia Day and JR Ward. I love their use of language and description that has you sucked in right from the start.

How did you get into writing in this specific genre?  Have you ever thought about writing in a different genre?

Well, there’s just something about sassy contemporary romance.  It’s the world I live in.  Or used to live in several years ago.  Lol.  It’s Witty comments between friends and lovers.  It’s Sex and the City if done well.  But the geek girl in me also loves paranormal, because who doesn’t’ love a shifter?

What are some of your writing rituals?

I wake up and write 1000 words first thing in the morning.  This is before coffee, before brushed teeth, before I even run off to use the bathroom.  It helps set the pace for the rest of the day.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

Sultry in Stilettos is the second in my In Stilettos series.  It stars best friends Ricca Munroe and Becket Mills, who just can’t seem to get it together.

Shy, Fantasy Event Planner, Ricca Munroe has never been lucky in love, so when the latest in a long line of Mr. Oh So Wrongs publicly dumps her, she focuses on her career. All she has to do to land the job of a lifetime is work side-by-side with the one man who can break her heart.

Beckett Mills has never been in love. Personal entanglements are a recipe for disaster—that is until one kiss from Ricca Munroe changes everything. Beckett needs this job to fulfill a promise he made. All he has to do is resist the seductive charms of his best friend.

Can Ricca come out of her shell to land her dream job and the love of her life? Can Beckett trust himself enough to actually fall in love and still keep the promise he made?

Warning: Sexy, sass talking women will make you laugh, cry and want a pair of killer footwear.
How did you come with the idea for this story?

I got the idea for the first in the series for Sexy in Stilettos while sitting around with my girlfriends one night getting some drinks. I wondered under what scenario I would abandon my list making ways and out of that, the hero, Alec was born.  Ricca and Beckett were so fun they deserved their own story.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

Right now I’m working on the follow up to my first published novel, Game, Set, Match, called MisMatch.  It’s not exactly a sequel, but it stars the plucky Jessica, who stole the show in GSM. After that comes Sassy in Stilettos, the final in the In Stilettos trilogy.

What would you be if you were not an author?

A Project Manager.  I’m apparently very bossy.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Nothing stays in my TBR pile for too long.  But I’m anxiously waiting for the next Crossfire novel by Sylvia Day.  May seems too far away.  Lol.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Just a thank you for having me today and a reminder that In addition to ebook and print, many of my books are available in audio too.  Readers(listeners) can find them here

Interview with Carla Caruso

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Carla Caruso to the blog today to chat about her new book CITY GLITTER.

Carla, can you please share with us a little about yourself.
Hello, I’m an Australian-based writer (with Italian ancestry!). My background is in journalism, but writing novels has always been a little pipedream for me, which has finally come true. I’m married, a star-sign junkie, running fanatic, sometimes vegetarian – and have a tabby with ‘tood called Luca.

Have you always wanted to be an author?
Yes! I used to annoy my kindergarten teachers by dictating long, detailed stories to them. As a teen, I used to hand-write 100-page stories (for fun) in my school holidays. And Mum always kindly took me to the library to sate my bookworm tendencies. It just took me a while to realize my childhood dream – journalism seemed a more practical course!

What is your most interesting writing quirk?
I have a mini notepad that I carry around in my handbag and scrawl notes in constantly. Everything goes in there, from hearing an actor’s name I like to throwaway lines I hear. It all inspires my writing. My family thinks I’m mad!

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?
Cityglitter (Destiny Romance) is about a gorgeous fairy living a glam life in the big city who does the one thing she promised herself she’d never do: fall in love with a human! The fairies in the story all look like Victoria’s Secret Angels – with actual wings. http://www.destinyromance.com/

How did you come with the idea for this story?
The book is based in the big city of Sydney, Australia, where I worked for three years in the magazine world (now back in my smaller hometown of Adelaide). The idea came about because I got to attend a ton of fabulous media parties through my work there and never felt so frumpy in my life! Night after night, manicured socialites and celebs would be on parade and I used to joke to my hubby that maybe they used magic to look so polished all the time. The idea was born! Oh, and we used to go cycling in the Centennial Parklands a lot on the weekend, which had a fairy-like feel – at least to my mind!

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?
I’ve just had a ‘90s time-warp novel accepted – another romantic comedy. A friend called it “Hot Tub Time Machine for girls”! I’m also working on a suspense-style one involving zodiacs and another that’s a rural romance in a coastal setting – featuring a ghost. Plus, I have a short story out with AlfieDog.com. It’s about young illustrator Frankie who accidentally discovers an ‘alter’ version of herself when she follows her wandering cat through a hedge hole. Her alter-ego seems to have the perfect life, including a big house and a gorgeous husband… but does she really?

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?
Definitely Sophie Kinsella behind the Shopaholic series (and the resulting Confessions of a Shopaholic film starring Isla Fisher). I’m such a fan of her work – and am hanging out for her new book, Wedding Night! I think I’d be a tad terrified if I met her, though, and would clam up, not knowing what to say.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?
It will happen when the time is right. Just keep at it, enjoy it, learn from the critiques, keep polishing your work and learning – and join a writers’ group (or two) to hone your skills, keep you motivated and abreast of the industry.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.
I’ve always wanted to (properly) learn Italian – that’s my family’s background. I know a few words here and there – and plenty of swear words – but I’d love to be fluent one day! It would definitely help when I’m travelling over there.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?
I’m looking forward to the new book from the very funny Lisa Walker, Sex, Lies and Bonsai, and Maggie Alderson’s latest, Everything Changes But You. Can’t wait!

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Please find me at www.carlacaruso.com.au, @CarlaCaruso79, and http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/6541142. And thanks kindly for your time!

Excerpt:

I look back at Mr Butterscotch Eyes, who looks a little bemused. Perhaps it’s my seven-second delay to his greeting. I think fast.

‘Hello again!’ I gush, like we’re long-lost friends, not virtual strangers.

Without thinking, I stand up on tippy-toe, leaning forward, intending to air kiss his cheek. Somehow, like a paperclip drawn to a magnet, I’m pulled askew, my lips brushing his.

The effect on my body is like switching on an electrical grid, as every pore starts to buzz. His lips, so soft, moist, kissable; his musky scent, spinning a web around me; my body, pinging like a microwave with his strong physique mere centimetres away.

Suddenly, though, the sensual warmth, the heavenly breath, has been pried away and my lips are cold, bare. I flutter my eyelids open, honing in on his gaze, detecting a flicker of something in those liquid gold-like orbs before it dies.

He clears his throat, playing with a tortoiseshell cufflink. ‘That’s certainly not the kind of greeting I’m used to – especially from someone I barely know.’

THE BACKSTORY

From the time we announced the final Red Rock ebook in 2009, people have been asking us when we’d go back to the Sanctuary world and write more about werewolves and their witch rivals.  In the beginning we didn’t want to return–we had our four books and our two prequel novellas, and those were the stories we had to tell.  But people kept asking, and we kept saying, “Well, what if…okay, no, but maybe if…”

A watched pot never boils, and I’m starting to think a watched plot is the same way.  The harder we tried to force ourselves to come up with the right story, the more they slipped away.  Finally we set the idea aside for a while, reluctantly admitting that maybe it had been too long in any case.  We’d missed our window.  It was time to work on other–

BOOM!  That was our idea, knocking us head over heels.  It hit us so hard we sat down and wrote Haunted Sanctuary instead of the book we were supposed to be writing.   It wasn’t the story we’d originally imagined.  It takes place in a new town, with a new cast of characters, and is set several years after the end of Red Rock Pass.  You don’t have to be familiar with any of the previous books to pick up Haunted Sanctuary…

but hey.  Any excuse to give away books is good for us!

THE BLOG TOUR

Thanks to the generosity of Samhain Publishing–and with the assistance of many awesome bloggers–we get to spend the next twenty days giving away 80 ebooks!  Those of you who haven’t read the Red Rock Pass books will have twenty different chances to win the entire set in the ebook format of your choice.

In honor of that, we’re going to be revisiting some of our favorite scenes from each of the four books…and maybe showing a few sneaky peeks at the next chapter in the Sanctuary Universe!

TODAY’S SNIPPET

Sanctuary Lost: Power Games Revisited

aka Revenge of the Underdogs
(or wolves, as the case may be)

Alphas have all the advantages, or so it can seem sometimes.  In the Sanctuary world, they’re tougher, stronger and more dangerous.  They heal  faster, move faster and when they want to, they can put weaker wolves in their place with just a few words–or a little bit of magic.

There doesn’t seem like much that can balance that, but everything has its downsides.  For the wolves who follow the older traditions, that power comes with a price.  The weight of responsibility can weigh heavy, and when protective urges are more instinct than thought, you can paralyze a strong wolf by threatening someone they care about.

Brynn is just as protective as anyone in Red Rock, but she has a different set of instincts driving her. And sometimes freedom from responsibility is as good as a secret weapon…

* * *

They made it two more steps before she stopped him again. “He’s an alpha, Dylan. What if I can’t fight him? The instincts are so damn strong and I don’t know how to control them. What if he tells me to do something and I just do it?”

He grasped her upper arms, bent to meet her eyes, and whispered hoarsely, “You try like hell, Brynn. That’s all either of us can do.”

She stared at him for an endless moment, and her terror gave way under the fierce determination in his eyes. Dylan was like her, and he’d risked everything to defy Alan Matthews and keep Abby safe. “Okay. Okay. Let’s do it.”

The front door creaked, and so did the stairs. Halfway up, mocking laughter rang out. “Come on up. We’ve been expecting you.”

Dylan hesitated, but only for a moment. Then he dragged Brynn up the rest of the stairs and ran for the sound of Alan’s voice, his gun at the ready.

Sam’s voice cut through a second before they hit the door, a pained, muffled scream that sounded like a denial. Then a sound Brynn recognized all too well—a fist hitting flesh.

They spilled through the door into a nightmare. Alan sat on the bed with Sasha at his feet, his hand wrapped tightly in her hair. On the other side of the room, three men were attempting to restrain Sam. Someone had bound her hands behind her back with brutal efficiency, but judging from the awkward angle of one of their arms and the blood and rising bruises on their faces, getting her under control had cost them.

A pleased grin spread over Alan’s face. “This is my best day ever,” he murmured, jerking Sasha’s hair a little as he watched Dylan and Brynn. “If Abigail dropped out of the sky and landed in my lap right now, life would truly be complete.” He winked at Brynn. “You made that happen once. Surely you can do it again.”

“No.” One word, but she put everything she had into it, everything she could summon up with the wolf howling a warning inside her, screaming at her to run.

Dylan twitched and raised his gun, ignoring the warning snarls from the men in the corner. “Let her go.”

“The witch?” Alan questioned with a laugh. “No. No, I don’t think so. They can do such interesting things.” He picked up a knife from the bed beside him. “Like this, for instance. If she tries, I’ll bet Samantha over there will recognize it. This”—he thumbed the blade lovingly—“will hurt even the strongest wolf. But the magic fades eventually. You have to…recharge them.” He tossed the knife behind him, and one of the three men with Sam caught it.

Alan turned his attention to Sasha. “So beautiful.” He pulled her head back and hit her across the mouth, chuckling when she recoiled with a cry. “I forgot how beautiful some humans can be.” His thumb traced her split lower lip. “So wounded.” Then he shrugged and licked his thumb clean. “And useful.”

Sam’s snarl of rage filled the room, and the ropes holding her arms snapped as she surged to her feet—

—and stopped again when Alan’s fingers closed around Sasha’s throat. “I can tear it out with my bare fingers,” he whispered, his eyes fixed on Sam’s face. “You remember, don’t you?”

Furious, helpless power raged through the room as the werewolves forced Sam to her knees again, and Brynn recognized the horrifying truth of Sam’s existence in one moment of insight. Left to her own devices, she could tear every man in this room apart—but the protective instincts that came with her power left her trapped in the face of someone else’s pain.

Researching the Living Past

I’ve always been fascinated with history. Growing up in England, in the historical market town of Huntingdon, I was surrounded by it. Huntingdon was the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell (who became Lord Protector in England after the civil war and execution of Charles I) and it was also once home to families like the Montagus – the Earls of Sandwich. Chartered by King John in 1205, the town has been around for a while! It’s just a short meander over a medieval bridge to the village of Godmanchester, where one of my sisters still lives with her family. There are 17th century half-timbered houses along the ancient causeway in Godmanchester. My sisters and I used to walk along to see if we could fit under the beams supporting the second floor of one house that hung over the pavement. I remember fitting under it until I was eleven and then I was too tall already and had to stoop unless I wanted to bang my head. Made me realize how much shorter people were once!

So I suppose, as a child, a lot of that historical detail seeped in without me actually realizing it and long before I ever thought I might use it to write historical romance. Later, living in Cambridge for a while and also in Nottingham and York, I spent a lot of time dawdling through my favorite museums, revisiting them whenever I could and had pennies to spare. I was very fortunate to live in those wonderful cities where history is preserved and celebrated. With a mind like a sponge I gleefully absorbed every drop.

Devouring books all my life has also helped stockpile quite a mass of historical detail in my little mind. I love biographies and recently read a wonderful one about Jane Austen. Whenever I read, I take notes. Tons of notes.

For me, these glimpses into the past —whether they came by reading a book, touring a castle ruin, or simply strolling down an amazing street like ‘The Shambles’ in York, where fourteenth century houses lean in as if a strong gust of wind might blow them down—have all contributed toward the treasure chest of research I open when I sit down to write. Once that knowledge is there it can pop out at me in the oddest moments and suddenly cause a jolt of inspiration.

Of course, when I’m in the midst of a story, I also research certain facts, phrases and details to make certain they are accurate for the period. For this purpose I’ve accumulated stacks of material and dog-eared books. There is one thing every writer has in common—they’re all voracious readers. They have to be.

At my bedside, while I was working on Miss Ellie Vyne’s story, I had the following pile of books: The Regency Underworld; Everyday Life in Regency and Victorian England; National Gallery of Art; The Mirror of Graces; Harriette Wilson’s Memoirs; A History of Food; An Elegant Madness – High Society in Regency England; Jane Austen Her Life; Six Centuries of Verse; Secrets of the Gypsies (hmm not sure why that’s there) and Change Your Underwear Twice a Week (hilarious book, nothing to do with Miss Ellie Vyne! Or is it?) I never know where I might find something that sparks an idea and with my eclectic tastes in reading…well…

Researching the period in which we write is incredibly important, not only so the reader can fully immerse themselves in the story without jarring anachronisms, but to bring our characters to life in a world of three-dimensional detail. Like an artist creating an oil painting, or a watercolor, a writer creates their world in layers and shades of light. It can’t be done without an enjoyment of history and that comes not just from books, but from breathing it in, from touching and tasting the past. In a sense, we have to walk that world and live with our characters in order to know them.

Most of all, I think, research has to be fun. If it isn’t, writing becomes a chore and I have enough of those to do already!

I’d like to leave you with a small excerpt from THE WICKED WEDDING OF MISS ELLIE VYNE. Ellie Vyne also has a love of books and wants nothing more than to retire to a room full of them, as she tells her childhood nemesis James Hartley in this scene. Naturally, she wouldn’t usually bother to tell the rake about her dreams for the future, but they’re both wearing masks and disguises tonight. And James is pickled. Since he doesn’t appear to recognize her, she feels free to spill her true thoughts for once.

“I don’t really want a husband,” she said. “If I wanted one, I could have had one by now.”

She had a heart-shaped face with a very determined chin. Her lips reminded him of sweet, fancy little sugar cakes served on fine china and handed around by silent butlers at very exclusive hotel teas. Delicate confections he would get a slap ’round the cheek for swallowing three at a time when his grandmother caught him in the act.

The ice queen’s neck was slender and long, accentuated by that ridiculously tall wig. She most definitely had all her parts in their place, he thought, slowly admiring every inch of her swanlike neck and the jutting swell of bosom below it. Hoisted inward and upward by a tight corset, her shapely flesh was almost bursting out of its lace.

A moment ago he’d been running away from women and conversation. In just a few short minutes he’d changed his mind about both. Could be the drink, he reasoned. Things often seemed most awe inspiring when under the influence of brandy.

So, if she didn’t really want a husband…

           “Then what do you want?”

“Isn’t it strange no one has ever asked me that before?” She looked down at her lap. “You’ll laugh.”

“I most certainly will not.” He slammed a hand to his heart, hiccupping again. Inwardly he cursed himself for prompting her to tell. Now he’d hear all about a man who wouldn’t or couldn’t marry her. Or some such nonsense. And he’d listen patiently then reassure her that the fool didn’t know what a mistake he’d made. Finally, after spilling a few tears and borrowing his kerchief, or his sleeve, she’d run off back to the ball.

Why couldn’t he have told her he didn’t care about her problems? No. He had to open his stupid mouth and ask, didn’t he?

Softly she said, “I want a little room filled with books. There should be a fireplace and an old dog sleeping in a basket beside it. A few comfortable chairs with lots of pillows. All of it overlooking a pretty garden. A little place of my own, where no one ever bothers me. That’s all.”

The pearls hanging from her ears were still now, her words forced out as if shy to be heard. Moonlight touched the smooth orbs of her bosom above the bodice of that elaborate ball gown, and James wistfully followed the rapid lift and fall with his woozy gaze.

“Is that too much to ask?” she added.

He hastily quelled another hiccup. “No. Not at all. Not at all.” That was all she wanted? He’d give her a house full of such rooms, he mused. Anything she wanted. “It seems you’d be a vast deal more economical to keep than most women I know.”

                “Do you mock me, sir?”

                “No!” he replied, wounded.

“Kindly stop staring at my bosom.”

He felt his face heat up. It was unusual for James Hartley to be flustered by a woman, and he didn’t like the sensation. “You chose to wear that style gown, I assumed you wanted them to be looked at.”

Expecting a slapped face, he was surprised when she laughed. It was a delightful, smoky sound, deep and more than a trifle lusty. He didn’t know any women who laughed like that, unguarded and naughty. Or did he? He squinted hard at her lips, trying again to think coherently.

“I suppose you’re right,” she conceded eventually, her eyes two warm beacons of reflected starlight through her mask. “I wouldn’t have dressed this way if I didn’t want to be noticed.” Again he sensed she would never normally admit this. Because they were both hiding behind masks, it was permissible to speak with honesty.

“And you wanted to be admired,” he pressed.

“And…yes”—she inclined her head—“I wanted to be admired.”

Leaning closer, he crushed her silk skirt with his thigh. “What’s your dog’s name?”

           “My dog?”

“Old fellow. In the basket. By the fire.”

“Oh.” She flushed prettily under the edges of her mask, and he got the sense she was surprised he’d paid attention. It ruffled her proud feathers to be proven wrong about him. “I haven’t got one yet.”

           “Why not?”

“I haven’t got a home to keep him in.”

He frowned, grasping her lacy sleeve tighter in his fist. “Where do you live then?”

           “Nowhere,” she said. “I wander.”
