Viviana, Enchantress of Books and I, Books-n-Kisses are excited to let Joanna Wylde take over my blog today!!
Joanna Wylde is the secret identity of an international library spy who has travelled the world in search of exactly the right book to read. Despite her endless efforts, she’s still seeking the Ultimate Story — a story so powerful, so incredible that time itself stops while it’s being read, kittens spontaneously spring forth from rainbows, and unicorns bow their heads in praise. Joanna’s hobbies include manatee wrestling (six time north Idaho champion), arguing about the pros/cons of the Oxford comma and refusing to accept that Chicago style should trump AP. Question: If you listen to audiobooks, how/why did you get into them, what do you love about them and do you have any you’d recommend?
Joanna: I started listening to audio books when I was in middle school, I think. My parents would get them on tape from the library and we’d play them on road trips. Patrick McManus had a series of really outstanding short stories and such about growing up in the mountains of north Idaho, really funny ones. I remember laughing with my brother so hard I snorted snot out my nose, and then him making fun of me for it!
As an adult, I think my favorite audio books are from Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series. Not only are they funny, they’re among the only books my husband and I both enjoy listening to. He likes the humor and the silliness of it, and… well, let’s just be honest here. I like Ranger, LOL. I also really enjoyed the audio of Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. I can’t remember who the narrator was, but they were really good. I think we parked outside our house for a good half hour to hear the end of it.
What I love the most about audio books is how they allow me to experience a story while I’m driving. We have a lot of family in the surrounding area, so I do a lot of road trips. Any time I can throw in a book, that just makes things so much easier. I also like them when I’m cleaning, because it engages my brain without requiring me to stay in one place. Hearing readers say the same thing about my own books has been really incredible, I have to admit. Incredible and surreal!
