TOP 5 REASONS I LOVE AUDIOBOOKS
by Darynda Jones
- I can get caught up on my reading while doing other things, like driving or cleaning house or staring at the ceiling. Mostly staring at the ceiling.
- I’m a slow reader (I swear I can write a book faster than I can read one), so listening to audiobooks helps me stay caught up and ups the number of books I read per year.
Repeat after me: LISTENING TO AUDIOBOOKS IS NOT CHEATING. You are still “reading” books. You are still absorbing a story and reaping all the benefits of that worthy endeavor.
- I get to learn how to pronounce words I’ve never said aloud. Ahhh, probably the ONLY pitfall of being a voracious reader. We know what words mean, but we don’t know how to say them out loud. Words like antipodes and anemone and diphtheria. (Did you pronounce that dip-theria? Yeah, me, too.)
- Saving trees, baby. 🙂
- And my number one reason for listening to audiobooks? I’ll give you a scenario. I travel. A lot. When I’m in my hometown of Portales, New Mexico, I go to writerly meetings in Albuquerque at least once a month. From my house to our meeting place is a span of almost four hours. So, it’s a pretty good drive, especially when I go up and back in one day.
When I listen to an audiobook, however, the trip seems more like 20 minutes. That is not an exaggeration at all. My mind is immersed in the fantastic world the writer has created.
A question I sometimes get is, isn’t it dangerous for your mind to be so preoccupied?
In a word, nope.
You are still very aware of what’s going on around you. You still stop suddenly if you have to. Avoid a herd of cows when necessary. (Yep, that happened.) Pay attention to the erratic driver veering in and out of traffic just to get two cars ahead. Oh, wait, that was me.
Some people say listening to audiobooks makes them sleepy. IMHO, if they make you sleepy, you were sleepy to begin with. Two words: red and bull.

Regarding #3, I will say that, while I do occasionally discover I’ve been pronouncing something incorrectly, more often than not, the narrator mispronounces the words that I find questionable. I don’t know how many times I’ve paused an audio book to look up a word to verify whether or not I’ve been mispronouncing it or if there is an alternate pronunciation, which there sometimes is, but I’ve found an awful lot of mispronunciations. If the book is narrated with an English accent, I usually give the narrator the benefit of the doubt, though, because the Brits pronounce a lot of words quite differently from the way we do (beyond the usual, obvious differences).
I do love audio books, though, even when these errors creep in. I especially love Charley in audio!
