The-Final-Sentence-186x300

Daryl Wood Gerber is here today to talk about her new release, Final Sentence, and share one of her yummy recipes. I can’t wait to try this myself.

In all my culinary mysteries, I include recipes. I had no idea when I started writing mysteries that I would have to be a cook, too. Luckily, I was. I catered during college. I worked at restaurants. I even subbed for the chef at one restaurant. Now I offer up recipes every week on Mystery Lovers Kitchen with other author pals. All of us like to cook up crime.

In the Cookbook Nook Mysteries, I’ve included cookie recipes. Jenna, the protagonist in the series, loves her sweets. I’ll be sharing some of those recipes on Mystery Lovers Kitchen after the book’s release.

This Five-Cheese Mac  and Cheese recipe is from the Cheese Shop Mysteries. It wasn’t included in the recipes at the back of the book, but a fan wrote me and begged for it. Sure, why not? Then a friend of hers posted the link (it’s on my website) and it went viral!

There is a tavern in town that Charlotte and her pals go to for girls’ night out. Tim, the fun-loving Irish owner, makes some of the best appetizers and sides.  I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a macaroni and cheese to me. [This can be made gluten-free and it’s amazing.]

Five-Cheese Mac and Cheese

mac and cheese plate

Ingredients:

2 cups dried macaroni, cooked to tender (about 4-5 cups cooked)  [You can use gluten-free macaroni]
3 cloves garlic chopped
8 tablespoons butter [a cube]
1 1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup white wine
3 Tbs. rice flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp. paprika
2 cups grated cheese (equal parts Cheddars, Smoked Gouda, Parmessan, Monterey Jack, Havarti)

Directions:

Cook macaroni according to package directions.  Drain and set aside.  May be made a day ahead.  Note:  Do not forget to drain and set aside.  You do not want the pasta to be “wet.”

In a large sauce pan, melt butter over medium heat.  Add garlic and cook about 2 minutes.  Add rice flour and stir.  Cook 1 minute, let boil and thicken, stirring constantly.

Add milk and wine, stir and let boil to thicken.

Remove from heat and add cheeses and seasonings.

Pour sauce over drained macaroni.

Serve with a crisp salad.

QUESTION:  Have you ever shared a recipe via twitter or the Internet or even via email with friends?

Jennifer’s Review of Final Sentence

 TITLE: Final Sentence

SERIES #: A Cookbook Nook Mystery #1

CHARACTERS: Jenna Hart & Aunt Vera

AUTHOR:  Daryl Wood Gerber

PUBLICATION DATE:  07/02/13

ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS: In need of a change, Jenna Hart leaves the high-pressure world of advertising to help her aunt Vera open a culinary bookshop and cafe. Back with her family in Crystal Cove, California, Jenna seems to have all the right ingredients for a fresh start–until someone adds a dash of murder.

As a marketing expert, Jenna wants to make sure the grand opening of the Cookbook Nook draws a crowd, and no one is better at getting attention than her old college roommate, celebrity chef Desiree Devine.  But when Desiree arrives in quiet Crystal Cove to do a cookbook signing, the diva stirs up more trouble than business…especially when she turns up dead.

Known for stealing husbands and burning bridges, Desiree left behind plenty of suspects–including Jenna.  Though the celebrity’s life always appeared to be an open book, Jenna will have to read between the lines in order to clear her name, and catch a killer before another body is served cold.

REVIEW PROVIDED BY: Jennifer             NUMBER OF STARS: Four Stars

REVIEW: This is the first book in a new series and I believe that this series is off to a great start.  Jenna Hart has returned home to Crystal Cove after the death of her husband to start a new life and help her Aunt Vera open a culinary bookstore and cafe.  For the opening festivities, Jenna has asked her friend and famous chef, Desiree Devine, to hold a book-signing event to help bring in customers for their new store.  Instead of a book-signing, Desiree ends up dead on the beach and Jenna is the prime suspect in her murder.  Jenna is now out to clear her name before it is too late and the entire town believes she is responsible for the murder.

Daryl Wood Gerber creates a delightful cast of characters set in an inviting little coastal town that will charm anyone.  I liked Jenna because she was trying to get back on her feet after the death of her husband and was hoping that returning home would help her start a new life.  She was very smart and even though she wasn’t a great cook, she never let her short-comings get her down.  I liked how her family and friends helped rally around her and it will be interesting to learn more about them in other books in the series.  The mystery in Final Sentence will keep you guessing and I definitely enjoyed visiting Crystal Cove.  I’m looking forward to reading more about Jenna and her adventures in the next installment of this delightful mystery series.

I haven’t shared any of my own recipes, but I get lots of recipe ideas from the Internet and Pinterest.

Orchid7, isn’t Pinterest fun? So colorful. A visual “book” to read and enjoy.

Yes, I have shared receipes on facebook — both by post to timeline/page (theirs or mine) and by private message. I’ve often emailed receipes to friends (or they to me), or I’ve sent myself an email when finding a recipe on a site that allows email. Sometimes, I’ve even ‘copy/paste’ a recipe I’ve found and couldn’ get any other way.
I do not twitter/tweet, nor do I pinterest, so there is not recipe sharing in this way.

I really haven’t cooked for 20+ years (hubby does), but I still like and collect the recipes!!! One of these days, I might cook again :).

    • Daryl Wood Gerber July 8, 2013 at 11:12 am #

Donna, how lovely to have a hubby that cooks. How freeing for you. Though I have to admit, I adore cooking. I find it very relaxing.

I don’t tweet and I don’t have a blog. I really only know how to make one thing so I have emailed my recipe to people when reqeusted.

    • Daryl Wood Gerber July 8, 2013 at 11:12 am #

Lori, dying to know…what one thing??? 🙂

It’s a refridgerator cake made with Lorna Doones, pineapple, vanilla pudding, and Cool Whip.

I share recipes via e-mail and find it very beneficial and helpful.

    • Daryl Wood Gerber July 8, 2013 at 11:13 am #

Sharon, nice! I think tried and true recipes are the best, don’t you?

I will definitely be trying that Mac & Cheese! It’s one of my favorites! It’s especially good with some pepperjack cheese too! Gives it a little kick! 😉 Can’t wait to start reading this series!

    • Daryl Wood Gerber July 8, 2013 at 3:57 pm #

Marsha Jo, definitely Pepperjack would add a nice kick.

      Enjoy the reading!

And just realized I forgot to answer the question! lol Got a tad excited thinking about Mac & Cheese! 😀 I don’t think I’ve ever shared any recipes online before, other than maybe sharing a post that someone else shared originally. I don’t have many, if any, recipes that are my own. Pretty much all the recipes I have are ones from books or other friends.

    • Daryl Wood Gerber July 8, 2013 at 3:58 pm #

Mary Jo, sharing a recipe doesn’t mean it needs to be yours. It’s the pass-it-along theory. You obviously share. I think that’s wonderful thing nowadays with the Internet, what you can share (that’s good for the rest of the world). Recipes fall into that category. 🙂

The mac and cheese is timely. I made Welsh Rarebit yesterday (thinned with a little extra beer) as a sauce over broccoli and onion and spiral pasta. It was yummy.

I have shared a recipe with a co-worker by email and it was for tater tot casserole. It is very good and so easy.

  11. Janice Hougland July 8, 2013 at 6:19 pm #

Hello Daryl, so glad to “meet” you on this blog! I love how you usually have a cat on your book covers. 🙂 I also like your culinary story lines. And yes, I have shared recipes with friends by e-mail (not twitter or FB…I’m rather fussy what I share on the internet). I’ve even participated via e-mail in a recipe club. But I mostly cook these days with my old favorites unless something I see sounds better than an old favorite I have on file. My mother was a terrific cook and owned a catering shop before she died. I used to help her in catering large parties.

  12. Christy Harrelson July 8, 2013 at 6:53 pm #

Yes I have often shared recipes and found new ones online by facebook & email. Desserts and casserole recipes have been my favorites so far. I have a terrific mac & cheese recipe but I think I will have to try your’s as well. Thank you for sharing your book excerpt and recipe! I appreciate the chance to win 🙂

  13. Lori H July 8, 2013 at 7:30 pm #

Yes, this past Christmas I shared a cookie recipe on a blog.

My friends seem to send me recipes on a fairly regular basis. I think they are trying to make a cook out of me, despite myself. I don’t send any their way.

  20. Jean Peerenboom July 9, 2013 at 3:43 am #

I love to read recipes and love the ones friends and family share with me. I don’t do much cooking so I don’t actually eat most of what I read about. I rarely share recipes, but I hit “Like” on many shared with me.

  21. Diane July 9, 2013 at 3:50 am #

Yes! I’ve shared recipes with email to my sisters-in-law who live far away and also to my best friend, since we both forget when we’re talking and giggling! So when I get home I just send a quick email…

  22. sandyg265 July 9, 2013 at 3:58 am #

I’ve received a lot of recipes that friends have shared with me–but I’m still not confident enough in my cooking skills to share my own recipes.

My best friend and I share recipes through e-mail all the time. I email her ones I find online that I think she will like and she does the same for me. Hope to win. Thanks for the giveaway !!!! Can’t wait to read Final Sentence, I have it on my TBR

I love Pinterest, it makes it so easy to keep track of recipes that I want to try and share! Just yesterday I pinned a recipe and my sister saw it and made it for her noon meal and I made it for our evening meal. I like seeing all the recipes people share on Facebook and that I can pin so I can find the recipe again later when I am looking for meal ideas. And thanks for this Mac & Cheese recipe! It looks good!

  27. Rachel Kramer Bussel July 9, 2013 at 8:28 pm #

I’ve shared a recipe for kale chips because I am obsessed with them and it’s easy.

  28. Debbie July 10, 2013 at 10:44 am #

I have emailed recipes to people that have asked for them and written them and given them out. At work we started our own recipe book for when we bring in dishes, instead of writing it down numerous times we put it in the book so everyone can copy it if they want.

  29. Kiki July 10, 2013 at 3:27 pm #

Love Mac and cheese. Best recipe i have gotten is my apple dumping recipe.
