Interview with Candace Havens

Welcome to Books-n-Kisses Candace.  Can you please share with us a little about yourself? Thanks for letting me hang out. I’m an author, TV and film critic. The mom of two mostly grown boys, and the wife of an understanding husband.

Have you always wanted to be an author? It was something more that happened to me. I don’t know that I knew I could dream such a thing. I was a journalist for many years and I sort of fell into writing fiction.

Can you share with us your typical writing day.  Is there anything you have to have while writing? This made me laugh. I don’t have a typical day. Every day is different, which is why I like it. For my day job I have interview a lot of celebs, producers and writers, and I travel a great deal. Some days I may write between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m. and get up at 7 a.m. to do some more. It just depends on what’s going on and where I am. (Smile)

Most challenging or rewarding part of writing? I like it when I finish that first draft. But my favorite part is when someone says, “Oh, my, Gawd, I love your book. That hero… or heroine…” There’s just no better part of this than someone being entertained by what you write. I love it!

Can you please tell us about your latest book? My story, Demon Express, in the anthology A Riveting Affair, is kind of a female Sherlock Holmes meets the Wild Wild West. She’s a professor, a kick-butt chick and she solves cases involving the paranormal. It’s steampunk, but a little different in that it’s set in the South.

How did you come with the idea for this story? I was asked by Fen Con (which is my local science fiction con) to write a short story for their program. There theme was Southern Steampunk, and that’s how Maisy and Demon Express were born.

Can you share with us your current work in progress? I have several in the works right now. But I can’t talk about any of them. I do have another anthology that just came out called Date By Mistake with my friends Rosemary Clement Moore, Jill Monroe and Gwen Hayes. It’s about blind dates, and it’s really fun. I have another book Seducing the Ice Princess, which hopefully will be out in July. It’s for the Brazen line at Entangled. 🙂 I also have some young adult books in the works. It’s a busy year.

Who are some of your favorite authors? Every time I answer this question I leave someone out. LOL. So I’m just going to say I was inspired by Nora Roberts, Jodi Thomas, Janet Evanovich and Laurell K. Hamilton to write the way that I do. 🙂

Is there anything else you would like to add? I just want to say thanks! If you haven’t tried steampunk, my story is a bit of a teasers into a new series I’m doing. I hope you’ll check it out. 🙂

Do you enjoy writing for an anthology book or do you feel it’s harder to write a SS?
