Writing Historicals that Appeal to the Modern Reader

By Shana Galen

For the past decade, I have heard the same refrain: the historical romance is dead. The assumption is that the modern reader doesn’t want to read about a world where there was no internet or cell service and where indoor plumbing was still a relatively new concept.

But I’m still writing historical romances, and readers are still reading them. In fact, I’ve been surprised at my last few signings to see so many young, meaning early twenties, readers. The genre is gaining new readers!

What is it about books like my Jewels of the Ton series that appeal to modern readers? I think it’s a combination of three factors—the hero, the heroine, and the plot.

The Hero

Although it seems counter-intuitive, modern readers like traditional heroes. Take the hero from If You Give a Rake a Ruby. Warrick is an alpha male. He’s the son of an earl, so he’s also wealthy and powerful. Oh, and he’s also an elite spy for the Crown. Cliché? Sure. But clichés are cliché because readers love them. What woman fantasizes about meeting a nice middle class shop owner? Not me! It’s fun to dream about a strong, powerful hero who thinks he knows everything, only to realize that the woman he falls in love with knows a few things too. Modern readers want an alpha traditional male who also comes to respect and admire the woman he loves. Male chauvinism is fine when a hero is introduced, but he should have evolved by the end of the book.

The Heroine

In contrast to the hero, heroines really should be modern women in historical clothing. Make that gorgeous historical clothing. My readers like a heroine who can stand on her own. Fallon from If You Give a Rake a Ruby is such a woman. She’s strong and independent. She’s had a tough life, but she’s a survivor. She doesn’t need to be saved, but she does need to be loved. We all need to be loved and cherished and valued, and those needs cross all genres and time periods.

Modern readers certainly appreciate a kick-ass heroine (and Fallon kicks more than a few in this book), but readers like their glamour too. I loved dressing Fallon in silks and rubies, having her attend all the most fashionable events, and giving her servants and other luxuries. But I’m well aware there was a darker side, a seedier side of London, and my characters step foot in that world as well.

The Plot

I can’t speak for all readers, but modern readers are used to fast-paced lives and fast-paced media. I think we often enjoy fast-paced reads as well. I love drawing room historicals, but there’s nothing like a good adventure story with spies or pirates or highway men. If You Give a Rake a Ruby is full of intrigue—spies, secret identities, valuable diamonds, priceless rubies, carriage chases, fist fights, and a love story right in the middle. That’s the kind of historical a modern reader likes. I hope.

What are your thoughts? Do you enjoy historicals? Why or why not?

congrats to Shana on her newest release! This series sounds awesome 🙂 Thanks for sharing! My question… what was the most fun thing you’ve done to “research” your books?

    • Shana Galen March 20, 2013 at 7:56 am #

Erin, I wish I did fun things to research my books. Mostly I read boring non-fiction books. Sometimes I watch period films. That’s more fun.

  5. Melissa Limoges March 20, 2013 at 7:52 am #

I do enjoy historicals. They’re actually my favorite romance genre. I suppose I just like the blend of history and romance. I like the stuffier society everyone lives in as well. Behind closed doors is another matter of course. Congrats on your new release, Shana.

    • Shana Galen March 20, 2013 at 7:57 am #

Thanks, Melissa. That stuffy society makes for fun conflicts!

Thanks, Sharonda. Historicals were my first love and remain so!

  9. Leanna March 20, 2013 at 9:14 am #

Historical romance books must require a lot of research, have you thought about swtching to contemporary romance because it would require less research? Do you have someone that helps you with your research? Love your books!

    • Shana Galen March 20, 2013 at 10:30 am #

It does require a lot of research, Leanna, but I think contemporary authors have to research too–professions, police procedures, settings. I have done so much of the research after all these books, the era is familiar to me.

  10. Lori H March 20, 2013 at 10:00 am #

Love Shana’s books. Thanks so much for the giveaway.

  11. MsTLCMn March 20, 2013 at 1:36 pm #

Historical romance novels are my VERY favorite as I am a history buff and I love reading about a time when settings were romantic and clothes were beautiful and just so different from our everyday work-a-day lives and I especially love Shana Galen’s books! 🙂

    • Shana Galen March 21, 2013 at 6:04 pm #

Thank you so much. That’s one big reason I like historicals too.

  13. Monica March 20, 2013 at 3:25 pm #

I used to laugh at my mom when I was young because she read so many historical romances but now that I’m older I love them and I can’t get enough. I like to step back to when people had beautiful clothing and manners. I choose to selectively ignore the whole infrequent-bathing and using-a-chamber-pot stuff lol. I’d love to win your book and thanks for the chance.

    • Shana Galen March 21, 2013 at 6:05 pm #

Monica, we all choose to ignore the infrequent bathing/chamber pot stuff 🙂

  14. Renee Brown March 20, 2013 at 3:33 pm #

I love a good romance because it is my “escape period.” I love to read historicals because they allow me to excape this world. I like the manners and constrictions that they had to live with, yet the heroines can be more like today.

    • Shana Galen March 21, 2013 at 6:07 pm #

Renee, it’s nice to think there was a time without cell phones and email and video games and people actually had conversations face to face.

  15. Barbara Elness March 20, 2013 at 4:15 pm #

I’ve always loved reading historical romance because I love history and reading about times past is really interesting to me.

    • Shana Galen March 21, 2013 at 6:07 pm #

Me, too, Barbara. I have always found history so fascinating.

  16. Sharlene Wegner March 20, 2013 at 5:39 pm #

I have only been reading historical romance for a couple of years and I love them! There is a different type of dialogue, a little more flowery maybe. The pretty dresses on the girls, but I always like the description of the men in their tight pants, too!

    • Shana Galen March 21, 2013 at 6:08 pm #

LOL, Sharlene! You cannot forget the men and their tight breeches.

  17. Kathleen O March 20, 2013 at 5:50 pm #

I do very much like Historical romances.. I think that they have a certain essence that you don’t get with a contemporary novel. I think there is certain amount of innocents in historical novels. I will contain to read them as well as the more contemporary books.. But I cut my teeth on Historical romance and they will always have a special place in my heart.

    • Shana Galen March 21, 2013 at 6:09 pm #

I feel the same way, Kathleen. I am sometimes asked if I’ll ever write in another genre. The answer is yes, but I’d never stop writing historicals.

  18. Victoria Zumbrum March 20, 2013 at 6:24 pm #

  20. Janie McGaugh March 20, 2013 at 6:45 pm #

I love historicals, particularly Regency and Scottish. A lot of it is about the larger-than-life heroes and the strong heroines. No surprise that I also like paranormals.

    • Shana Galen March 21, 2013 at 6:10 pm #

Janie, I keep thinking I should set a book in Scotland. I have always loved it.

  21. Priscilla Pomeroy March 20, 2013 at 6:58 pm #

I love Historical Romances. I especially like them when the lead females are not simpering fools. My heroines have gotta have spunk. I also like to immerse myself in a foreign time and culture and a good author can paint that picture.

    • Shana Galen March 21, 2013 at 6:10 pm #

I agree, Priscilla. I love spunky heroines.

  22. Chelsea B. March 20, 2013 at 7:41 pm #

I LOVE me some historicals. Something about visiting another time and place… 🙂

    • Shana Galen March 21, 2013 at 6:11 pm #

Exactly, Chelsea. It’s fun to escape the everyday.

Pam, some of my favorite historical writers are the ones who write light and funny.

  27. June M. March 21, 2013 at 4:49 pm #

Congrats on the release Shana! This sounds like another great story from you!

  28. Diane Sallans March 21, 2013 at 6:22 pm #

I love this theme of gems – are you going to do a beautiful blue sapphire?

    • Shana Galen March 22, 2013 at 4:52 am #

That’s exactly right, Diane! SAPPHIRES ARE AN EARL’S BEST FRIEND is the next in the series.

  29. Jen B. March 21, 2013 at 7:00 pm #

I love historicals! I like that they sweep me into a grand world. A world that I wouldn’t want to live in (too much structure and too many rules). A world that is fun to watch the hero and heroine outsmart and find love!

    • Shana Galen March 22, 2013 at 4:52 am #

Jen, I think it’s fun to read historicals, but I do not want to live in a time without air conditioning or modern plumbing.
