When Do You Give Up?

It’s a tough question to answer, but all of the characters in my current release, UNCOMMON PLEASURE, have to face. Each struggles with his or her burdens. Ty Hendricks, a former NCO in the Marine Corps, believes he’s personally responsible for a devastating tragedy. Lauren Kincaid sees so much potential in Ty, but when he’s purposefully cruel to her, she’s not sure she can bear to walk with someone bent on self-destruction. Abby Simmons believes Sean Winthrop gave up on her months before when he decided – without consulting her on the subject – that she was to young and had too much of her life in front of her to support a Marine through a deployment based on a whirlwind thirty-day affair. Sean knows he’s made a mistake and he’s not going to give up on Abby, but sometimes there’s no recovering from a mistake.

When characters get pushed to the breaking point the possibility of quitting is always there. But when they’re at that edge they can also choose to change, to let love in, to admit a mistake and ask for forgiveness, to accept an apology and move forward.

Do you like that deep, crushing sense of desperation that all is lost forever in a story, or do you like a lighter-hearted read?

Uncommon Pleasure

by Anne Calhoun

Coming March 5, 2013

From a “fresh and imaginative” (The Romance Studio) voice in erotic romance come the tales of two women, each daring to challenge the toughest of men…but in these edgy, heated encounters, the greatest thing she’ll risk is her heart.

In Over the Edge, after a tragic incident during Ty Hendricks’ last tour of duty he cut off all connection with anyone he cares about—until a night with Lauren Kincaid draws him reluctantly back into the world. Lauren sees a wounded man in danger of losing everything to his inner demons, but the sensual, no-holds-barred fight for Ty’s soul could cost Lauren her heart.

In All on the Line, Abby Simmons fell hard for Lieutenant Sean Winthrop, but he sacrificed their relationship when he deployed to Afghanistan. Now he’s home, full of regrets and intent on winning back the woman he never forgot. Abby gives Sean her body but holds her heart aloof, until one night of pleasure forces her to choose her U.S. Marine…or life without him, forever.

I enjoy reading both, light hearted and very serious; but I try to alternate them so I won’t be sad!

I like both! I like a light, happy read sometimes and sometimes I am in the mood for a more emotional read. Of course, don’t tell anyone, but when a story gets real intense, I will check ahead to see that all is well and then go back to reading the drama! shhhh lol

These kinds of stories really tug at my heart and I just keep reading until the characters get to a happier place – just as in life they need to forgive themselves.

I love books with a military background! Sounds like a great book! Thanks for the chance. I think I like a more sense of desperation. It makes it more pleasurable when the hero comes out winning!

I think it really depends on your mood what I like to read. I probably read light hearted stuff most of the time because reading is my escape from my real life problems.

I like both, depending on my mood. If the book I’ve read prior was fluffy goodness, then bring on the soul-crushing despair (as long as a HEA of some sort is in the future. I didn’t want to get out of bed for a solid week last time I read Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl for school. Even knowing what the outcome was going to be ahead of time, it still crushed me in the end). If I’ve just read something emotionally draining, though, I prefer to follow up with something lighter.

Can I just say that I read “Breath on Embers” last December and LOVED it? I sooooo want to read this one!

I enjoy reading both light hearted and heavier, deep, sadly and profound books – really depends on my own feelings at the time as to what I’ll pick up to read. Uncommon Pleasure sounds great! Thanks for the giveaway!

  18. Newnet February 25, 2013 at 8:15 pm #

I like both types but I do tend to prefer the heavier stories and seeing the characters grow to accept love.

  19. Tonya February 25, 2013 at 9:08 pm #

I generally prefer a light-hearted read, as demonstrated by two of my favorite authors: P. G. Wodehouse and Terry Pratchett (okay, some of the Discworld books are heavier than others). When real life is trying enough, I want fun!

Meanwhile, what a HAWT Paul Marron cover! Yowza!

Generally, I like the light hearted read. Our world is filled with so much bad stuff, and I need a break from it. I generally don’t watch t he national news for that reason. Occassionally, I will read a book with a deeper, in-depth storyline, just not too often.
    Thank you!

I like both types of stories depending on my reading mood. Sometimes I want the light hearted read other times I want to get totally engrossed with a deep emotional read. Reading is like life and would be boring if everything I read was exactly the same.

  35. Carol L March 3, 2013 at 5:57 pm #

I like them both but more so of the angst variety because I know they will struggle to fix things or go through whatever they need to to get it right before they get their HEA. I love when they realize they’ve achieved that HEA. 🙂 Thanks for this opportunity.

I just love reading anything that captures by imagination. But my favorite are the steamy, darkly troubled men and the strong, and yes, steamy, darkly troubled women. Conquering fear, fatally disappointing past, self-doubt, trust issues. . . with the happy ending as a reward!
