Secret Heathers

By Katie Porter

Heather Morris from Inside Bet is an accountant who lives in a modest bungalow, drives a sensible car, and even her best friend teases about her lack of an adventurous sex life. But underneath her sensible blazer and push to become a full partner at her firm, Heather has secrets—as well as a tattoo and a piercing that, well, intrigues the hero, fighter pilot Jon Carlisle.

Her teen years were a bit of a disaster. Risks. Insolence. And one life-altering weekend that set her so hard on the straight-and-narrow path that no one believes she’s ever been anything but a good girl.

Jon suspects differently, mostly because he catches sight of a little something beneath that conservative blazer. The good girl has a past. The good girl is restless. The good girl wants to play.

It got me thinking about the people in our lives—not the ones we’re known since elementary school, where secrets are as informative as they are risqué. I’m talking about the friends and colleagues we’ve met as adults. There’s no telling what secrets they hide. A night of partying at a frat house, the aftermath of which meant waking up naked. A chance encounter on a business trip that led to a one-night stand. A piercing only a lover would get to see.

For me, the appeal of erotic romance is peeling back the layers of civilization and finding out what really hides in people’s deep psyches—their needs and desires. The couple you’ve known for years, who volunteer on the PTA and annually organize one helluva New Year’s Eve bash, could be sadomasochists. Are there hard-earned, lovingly given bruises hiding under that twin set? Do they make dirty home movies? Have they ever participated in a threesome or an orgy? Likely, we’ll never know.

What I love about these real-life implications is that, right now, the people around you and passing you on the street and coming over for a BBQ on Saturday could hide a gorgeous sex life. We tend to think of missionary, vanilla sex as the norm. But what if it’s not? What if everyone is kinky and we’ve just never said a word? As my husband said, and I don’t know where he found this quote: “Everyone is normal until you get to know them.”

I like that idea much better. Secret desires fulfilled behind closed doors. Only, in erotic romances such as Inside Bet, we get to open the door and learn at least one secret story.

Up next for Katie Porter, the co-writing team of Carrie Lofty and Lorelie Brown:

Now that both RT BookReviews 4½ Star Top Picks DOUBLE DOWN and INSIDE BET have been released, we’re looking forward to the September 25th arrival of HOLD ‘EM , featuring wild child Leah and a surprising reunion with a fellow pilot. The final two installments of the “Vegas Top Guns” series will follow in 2013.

November brings the m/m Christmas-themed CAME UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR , and in January, LEAD AND FOLLOW will launch the five-part “Club Devant” series of erotic multi-partner romances set in a hot New York City burlesque club.

As part of the 64th Aggressor Squadron, Major Ryan “Fang” Haverty flies like the enemy to teach Allied pilots how not to die. The glittering excess of the Strip can’t compare to the glowing jet engines of his F-16. But a sexy, redheaded waitress in seamed stockings? Now she gets his blood pumping.

Cassandra Whitman’s good-girl ways haven’t earned any slack from her manager ex-boyfriend, or prevented a bad case of frazzle from holding down two and a half jobs. She sure wouldn’t mind letting the handsome Southern charmer shake up her routine.

Their wild weekend lives up to Sin City’s reputation. Especially when they discover a matched passion for roleplaying. For Cass, it’s an exciting departure from her normal, shy persona. But for Ryan, it triggers memories of a time when his fetish drove away the woman he loved—leaving him reluctant to risk a repeat performance.

Except Cass refuses to settle for ordinary ever again. She’s about to show the man with hair-trigger hands that she’s got a few surprise moves of her own.

Warning: This book contains dirty-hot roleplaying, featuring an all-alpha fighter pilot and an ambitious waitress with a fabulous imagination. Also: dressing-room sex, a plaid schoolgirl skirt, and a sprinkling of spankings.

As assistant director in an accounting firm, Heather Morris is at the top of her game. Her straight-laced colleagues wouldn’t believe the secrets she hides: her wild teenage past, work-of-art tattoo and nipple ring.

Her orderly life veers off course when she’s approached at a wine tasting by an arrogant pretty boy with a dirty mind and a hardcore dangerous profession. She finds herself tempted to step outside her respectable façade for some well-deserved excitement.

Captain Jon “Tin Tin” Carlisle knows women. Loves women. One glimpse of the nipple ring under Heather’s conservative blazer lights up all his instincts. He’s stumbled upon a rare treasure: an exotic beauty with a sexy laugh and a taste for dares.

After a red-hot hour of roulette, their simmering attraction bursts into an exploration of mutual passion that tests even Jon’s erotic limits. Soon he craves something he’s never desired before. More. But for Heather, more means trusting, and trusting leads to trouble.

Now Jon must decide if the best sex of his life is worth chancing his heart on a woman who shields hers so well.

Warning: Contains hot power play featuring a fighter pilot who comes from old money but knows all about bringing the dirty. Also: a nipple ring, sex on the hood of a hella sweet sportscar, and one teensy, tiny, wickedly naughty fluid exchange.

Book 3

A man with handcuffs. A woman with a paddle. Both fly F-16s.

Daughter of a world-famous motocross champion, and head-on competitor with three brothers, Captain Leah “Princess” Girardi was born with a need for speed. No one tells her what to do, especially not men with chauvinistic “girls can’t be fighter pilots” attitudes.
That’s what ended her brief relationship with Captain Mike “Strap Happy” Templeton. Now, six years later, he’s been assigned to her squadron, and whoa damn, he’s filled out nicely. Plus he’s cultivated a Zen-like chill factor that pulls at her hormones.
Even after four tours, Mike’s the new kid in the 64th Aggressor Squadron. That’s not the only thing new. Since he last saw Leah, he’s learned a few things about himself. A female who outranks him still makes his teeth grind, but in the bedroom he craves the rush of pain inflicted by an adoring, powerful woman.
Their reunion is an explosive revelation. Leah is the beautiful mistress he’s been searching for, and she takes to her new role like a natural. But Leah’s aware one thing hasn’t changed. Loving him is still an all-or-nothing proposition. She’s not sure her reckless streak is wide enough to risk her career—and her heart.

Warning: This book contains a hot stud on his knees, a woman wielding a paddle, and filthy-gorgeous femdom sex. Also: dangerous rock climbing, two amazing motorcycles and some bad tequila.

I think everyone is hiding something in their lives. It doesn’t really bother me but I would like to know if someone I know has killed anyone (outside of war), other than that, I think it’s their own business.
This series sounds fantastic. Can’t wait to read it.

thanks for a fun post and congrats to katie on the newest release!

I think that I’m going to go with… everyone deserves to have their secrets. As long as it doesn’t negatively impact their or my life or harm anyone… it’s their right to share or keep as they think best. But… if it’s someone close to me and I think/know they’re hiding something, I’m pretty good at getting it out 🙂

I love when I read about a series that I have not heard about before. This series sounds great. I am going to have to add it to my to be read list.

    Thanks,

I figure everyone has a past, the good, the bad, and the ugly but put that together and it has helped form who they are today.

    This series looks good!

It does give me a measure of comfort that some people are hiding secret lives or loves since who knows I might be doing the same:)

  8. Heather P. August 29, 2012 at 9:23 am #

It gives me a measure of comfort to think that everyone is not perfect. Also, it makes life more exciting to think that of other people!

Good post! I tend to agree with your husband’s qoute. I have thought that I really don’t know much about my co-workers, what their lives are like outside of work and what their past is like before I’ve known them. I don’t even know my bff as well as I could – we don’t talk about her sex life with her husband – I do know about a part of her past but not all of it. I think I don’t tend to ask – I’m comfortable not knowing…lol…it gives me a measure of comfort I guess because I’ve made some mistakes that I like keeping to myself too.

I believe that everyone is holding some kind of secret, and it it somewhat comforting to know that not everyone is perfect.

Everyone has secrets to hide. Whether it’s something small or large it doesn’t matter. It really doesn’t bother me.

  12. Jane August 29, 2012 at 12:47 pm #

I’m pretty sure a few of my relatives and friends have kept something of their past a secret and I can understand that feeling.

I spend my time surrounded by scientists, so I’m pretty sure many of them have secrets they don’t want revealed in said (somewhat rarefied) scientific circles. Several fellow doctoral students are closet romance readers… you just tend not to mention it when everyone else is talking about the latest issue of Cell or Science. For me, if it’s not something along the lines of “I’m secretly a serial killer”, secrets don’t bother me at all 🙂

  14. Victoria Zumbrum August 29, 2012 at 3:12 pm #

I think everyone has secrets. I think it makes the person more intriguing.

  15. bn100 August 29, 2012 at 3:52 pm #

I don’t consider it and it doesn’t matter to me.

  16. Lorelie Brown August 29, 2012 at 5:23 pm #

    Hi Ladies!

Didn’t Carrie write a great post? And I just love how accepting everyone is! I think knowing our own secrets makes us more willing to look on others more kindly. 🙂

Thanks for commenting, and good luck on winning the book!

Everyone has secrets, so I really don’t think about it one way or the other. Secrets are what give us our individuality.

I think everyone has little secrets, but the most important things I think I do know about those closest to me.

  19. sienny August 30, 2012 at 6:02 am #

everyone has a secret. that’s a definite. so i don’t really think about it much

  20. Jen B. August 30, 2012 at 6:07 pm #

I know people keep their secrets. And I like it that way. Once in a while a secret pops out and it’s so uncomfortable (like the man at a party who drinks too much and announces that he like to watch his wife having sex with other men and would you mind being the next on the list!) Ugh! jepebATverizonDOTnet

I actually have. And it doesnt really make me feel either. I know everyone has their own secrets and pasts.
