Okay, on with my guest blog…
A few words of holiday advice.
As we say goodbye to Thanksgiving, those of us who are in The States, and run head-long into the Christmas holiday, it’s really easy to forget ourselves while we’re trying to please everyone else. Tension ramps up, family dynamics slip into every pour of our skin. We watch the running ticket of credit card bills soar. We see people we really don’t want to see and have to keep a smile on our face while sipping that glass of wine that never seems to empty. If you’re lucky your family gets along and everyone pitches in to even out the holiday drama. *sigh*
If an author wrote a book based during the holidays and all the characters blended together well, what a yawn-fest that would be. Isn’t it more interesting if there’s some reality based conflict everyone can identify with?
Without conflict, books are boring and forgetful. Sure an author may do a stellar job turning up the heat and creating complex characters… but without conflict you put the book away and never look back. Unlike books, this is a time of year we don’t want to revisit in May with big bills or ten pounds.
This is the time of year where conflict is all around us. At a time in history where the economy stinks in all corners of the world, it might be a good time to put aside some of the stress and do something for yourself each and every day. If you’re a writer… sit down and write a page or two. If you’re a reader, pick up a book and escape for thirty minutes a day. There is going to be a lot of conflict between now and January 1st. So take a moment and ease some of that pain and maybe… just maybe you won’t start the new year out with a desire to lose weight, or start exercising… or meet those writing goals. Why? Because you never lost site of those goals during this hectic time.
Conflict in books is paramount.
Conflict in life is stressful.
Happy Holidays Everyone.
